good morning! it is saturday, september 2nd. we are taking a live look outside at the s.a.p. center. cloudy skies in san jose welcoming in a new month and labor day weekend. thank you so much for starting your first weekend of september with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at our microclimate forecast and, boy, you predicteds it last weekend. hot in the beginning of the week and then we saw a massive cool down. >> i know. yesterday definitely was sweater

weather, pumpkin spice latte. this morning, i don't blame you if you want to stay in bed a couple of more hours. waking up overlooking san francisco. low 60s there, and lots of cloudy skies even over on into marin county. down here in san jose, also cloudy skies as we take a look overseeing city hall there and wake up to 63 degrees down here in the south bay, and this is all because of a low pressure system that has dropped into the bay area. it's bringing cooler conditions. some clouds. even some spotty rain chances. right now we're seeing some of that linger through marin county upwards towards santa rosa, too, and a few showers over vallejo and fairfield. most of that activity hanging over the sierras. plans to head there this weekend be careful over 80 and 50. could see slick roads out there. keeping it cool and cloudy today and tomorrow, but better news that we'll see more clearing for our labor day monday. talk about that coming up in about 15 minutes. back to you. >> things to looked forward to.

thanks, cinthia. more fingers pointing at cruise, the self driving cars. a report from the sf fire department blames two cruise cars for delaying an ambulance responding to an emergency call. inside that ambulance victim of a crash who later died. cruise tells us the fire department has it all wrong. >> reporter: driverless cars in san francisco, a lot of opinions. >> doesn't everything have an issue when they come out. >> both for and against. >> and a human take on it. >> reporter: the missing human is what san francisco fire reports say was a major problem when their ems crew pulled up into a gruesome scene august 14th.

a driver hit someone. blocked and couldn't quickly enter and exit the scene delaying getting a trauma patient to the hospital fast. one report said the patient was pronounced deceased agency sfgh approximately 20 to 30 minutes arrival due to severe blunt force trauma. went on to say cruise vehicles is unacceptable. theying that's not true after examining an autonomous vehicle or av. the other stopped in the lane to yield to first responders directing traffic. throughout the entire duration the av stopped traffic remains unlocked and flowing to the right of 9 the av. the ambulance had a clear path and other ambulances proceeded to do. soon as the victim was loaded into the ambulance the ambulance left the scene immediately and never impeded from doing so by

the av. cruise wouldn't share video saying it was proprietary. i was able to see a video and could see what the company described. including an ambulance able to get by that second stopped cruise vehicle. though it was a bit of a squeeze. the incident happened just four days after the california public utilities commission approved expansion of cruise and other robotaxi company, waymo, throughout san francisco at all hours. a move supervisor was critical of, particularly with emergency vehicle. he can't speak to the incident in question as tells there are more than 70 documents of avs interfering with first vee spond responders. >> in those cases seconds and minutes can make a difference whether somebody bleeds out or is not able to be resuscitated from a heart attack or other emergency and it's not a question of "if." it's a question of "when." >> reporter: cruise says their

safety record is okay, the supervisor wants the state to the have more regulation and set to talk to state lawmakers and leaders later this month. "today in the bay." and legendary singer/songwriter and mayor of margaritaville jimmy buffett tide at 76 years old. he passed away passfully overnight surrounded by family, friends, music and dogs. it did not provide a cause of death. buffett's most famous song "margaritaville" inspired restaurants and resorts that helped make him a billion flare. buffett was nominated for two grammy awards for "hey good lookin'" and "it's 5:00 somewhere." based on music called jimmy buffett's escape to margaritaville, debuting in 2017. the singer is survived by his wife, two daughters, son and

parrotheads across the globe. going to turn now back to this labor day weekend, and 95 million americans expected to hit the roads and skies to celebrate this unofficial end to summer. the tsa predicts 14 million americans will fly throughout the country this weekend. that's an 11% increase over last year. if you're hitting the road today, aaa estimates the best time to leave is tonight after 6:00 p.m. the worst traffic is expected around 10:00 this morning. tomorrow should see minimal traffic, but monday, they say, the best time to return is after 7:00 at night. and as we've been telling you a few weekends now a major freeway closure in the east bay causing big headaches for drivers. especially this labor day weekend. we're talking about a closure for repaving a portion of i-80 from vallejo to hercules. if you'll be headed that way this weekend, caltrans says plan accordingly, and as "today in

after suffering smoke inhalation as they tried to extinguish a fire yesterday on a vta bus parked in a san jose maintenance yard. no passengers onboard. the bus that caught fire was one of vta's ten electric buses. all taken out of service as investigators look into what caused that fire. is as it a somber night in the south bay as a community joined for a moment of silence during a football game at mountain view high school. this followed the chance and death of a mother as she tried to reach her injured son. "today in the bay" has the report. >> reporter: a moment of silence under mountain view friday night lights, honoring a player's late month, lucinda daniel collapsed on the field after running to her son who was injured at the game. she suffered a stroke and a second one the following day and

passed on wednesday. >> very emotional. we were playing for something bigger than ourselves. >> reporter: players decided to come out and play with her initials on the helmets, what lucinda would have wanted. >> she loved the game and her kids. >> after the game gave my son a hug, said great job. just the type of person she was. always cheering for everybody. and at all the games. she's going to be really, really missed. >> reporter: one of lucinda's four children out playing with jv. her other son still recovering came out to walk by the team. >> many staff members including myself have family and we're continuing to provide support for the students especially dillon and brendan as they return to classroom hopefully next week. >> reporter: school administrators say the team will host a ceremony in honor of the daniels feel next week in hopes's helping this community

welcome back. the group working to recall alameda county district attorney pam la price has taken another step forward in their process. price says you might know by now, under fire from groups live save alameda for everyone, or s.a.f.e., because they say it's her leniency on crime. price submitted paperwork to registrar of voters, and certify the signatures needed to get the ball rolling. once approved the recall effort will be in motion. that's when the general gathering of signatures is begin. hollywood's workforce is taking a hit as the strike by actors and writers continue. the u.s. bureau of labor statistics says the film, tv and music industry's lost 17,000 jobs in august alone. this comes months after the

writers guild of america and s.a.g. began a strike to stop production. striking writers and actors are asking for better pay as streaming and artificial intelligence affect their compensation. so far the massive work stoppage cost california's economy an estimated $3 billion. turning to florida now where communities are still recovering from hurricane idalia. hundreds of people were forced to evacuate when the storm barreled ashore wednesday in the big bend region of florida. with idalia now in the atlantic, residents are picking up the pieces. officials say so far three people have died from the storm. two in florida. one in georgia. back here locally, most of us here in the bay area know the stress of driving to the sierra and now caltrans is trying to change that. it's installing new overhead

electronic message boards on roads up to tahoe and sacramento. the goal, give drivers a better idea of road conditions, and to improve traffic flow and safety. the new signs also will have photos to help drivers who don't speak english. you can expect to see the signs this month along highway 50 in sacramento. drivers also will see some signs on i-5. and in case you missed it, a major shake-up in college sports involving two schools in the bay area. both cal and stanford are leaving the pack 12 -- pac 12 and joining acc next year. this change means besides smu and dallas, also joined, the closest acc competitors will be about 2,200 miles away at notre dame and louisville. the other 15 conference teams are even farther away including boston college, north carolina and miami. cal and stanford are the latest

schools to drop regional alliances to make more money from tv revenue. during a zoom media call the uc chancellor and cal's director says it's a fit both on and off the field. >> the athletes care deeply about being able to play at the highest level of competition, and to play with like schools, and this move guarantees or achieves those two goals. >> cal and stanford say most of their sports programs will not see a change because they compete in tournaments across the country already. cal says sports like soccer, volleyball and baseball will only make two trips to the east coast each season to limit the impact on their athletes. happening today, a big competition in the east bay is back, and it's attracting some of the world's best curls. the scottish highland games is back at the alameda county

we've got you covered. beautiful look over sfo this morning trying to wake up and get our day started. we really started the month yesterday and today on a much cooler note, and most of this weekend will stay cool with a chance of rain. mostly up to the north because of this low pressure system bringing us cooler and breezier conditions. what's the rest of the day look like? help you plan it hour-by-hour. staying local or heading up to the sierra, looking at spotty showers here and there. so make sure that you are prepared for changing conditions. by the middle of the day seeing mostly cloudy skies through the bay with a few peeks of sunshine. more clearing for the north bay this afternoon, but could see showers popping up around palo alto and the south bay over into the tri-valley this afternoon. very light amounts going on into the evening as well. as we go on into bedtime tonight seeing push through the north bay. most of that activity, though, tell you overall staying closer to the sierra. seeing heaier pockets over south lake tahoe and drizzle in

the coast getting ready for our sunday. temperatures today, lots of 70s on the board. very few 80s making your way over into concord and fairfield, mid-70s around the immediate bay as well as the north bay. upper 70s there through santa rosa. similar for tomorrow. less of those 80s come up on the board. keep it cool. most of this heat is staying to the middle parts of the country. so if your labor day plans are taking you out there looking at 90s to 100s in lincoln, nebraska. the desert southwest see monsoonal moisture still sticking around. the exciting scottish highland games at the alameda county fairgrounds. temperatures mid-70s a few peeks of sunshine. overall looks like an exciting time to see what they have to offer. looking at our labor day monday, more 80s pop up on the board and seeing more clearing of those skies. so enjoy your labor day monday. whether it's going away or staying local.

taking pictures on the golden gate bridge. >> i just show up and just start walking, and whatever happens happens. >> reporter: practically every single day of those five years. >> definitely like six, seven day as week. just this year alone, missed only like three, four days. >> reporter: the pictures jake takes are not like these. like the ones everyone takes. >> a lot of romance out there. sometimes -- >> reporter: jake is a street photographer candidly captures people who flock to this famous landmark by the millions. >> so many characters in the city and tourists and car accidents and motorcyclists and so many things can happen at any moment all condensed on this little strip of concrete over the ocean. >> reporter: but coming to the bridge every day for years has exposed jake to the dark size of what can happen here. on his daily walks he has encountered many people in crisis threatening to end their lives. >> every race, age, gender --

>> reporter: those moments the human being trumps the photojournalist. jake alerts bridge patrol and stay and talk to the person until they arrive. then it plays out like this dozens of times. it is in this way that jake's photography project turned into something of a humanitarian mission. >> days when i had like a normal job and i, like, took the day off from work, and then happened to stop someone from jumping. so i just felt like, if i went to work that day, that person might not be here. so i just felt like, i just kept working less and less, and then kept going to the bridge more and more. >> trying to get these guys with matching hats. >> reporter: he doesn't head out looking to save people. he just wants to take their picture. but instinctively knows when to do one and when to do the other. jake doesn't know how many more days or years he'll be coming to the bridge, but every day he does has potential of being a

and temperatures warming up into the 70s stepping outside for lunch. good morning. a special morning in san rafael wake up to 64 degrees seeing 70s as well. get it in there because my buzzen is planning a very special day. wanted to get that in for her. the rest of the bay area seeing lots of beautiful temperatures. a pair of 70s and mixing in with spotty showers throughout the day tomorrow and today and well and better clearing labor day monday. talk about that coming up. >> thank you. and a deadly crash in the north bay that happened after 2:30 on eastbound i-80 near highway 37 in vallejo. not far from six flags discovery kingdom. the chp says she found a black toyota pick-up truck on its side. at least two other cars also were involved in the crash. one person has died. two others suffered injuries.

no word on what caused that crash. back to our labor day weekend. the tsa is expecting 14 million passengers to pass through security checkpoints this holiday weekend. that means a record number of travelers. as nbc's reporter reports, a record-breaking season of air travel. >> reporter: the last weekend of the summer is here topping off a record season for air travel marred by a series of close calls. the latest, reagan international airport. another aircraft was still taking off from the same runway. faa now investigating. >> we've seen a noticeable increase in serious close calls, and the only acceptable number of these is zero. >> reporter: though transportation secretary pete buttigieg pointing out passengers are facing fewer cancellations than earlier this summer and last year when air

include a trip along interstate 80 in contra costa county expect slow going traffic. that's because caltrans closed a three-mile portion of i-80 throughout this holiday weekend for repaving work. they've been doing this the last few weekends. all westbound lanes from 780 at vallejo to highway 4 in hercule are closed. leaving some drivers frustrated but caltrans says it's necessary to repair the failing roadway telling us the full holiday closure actually helps get the job done faster. >> trying to go and stuck in vallejo because traffic on the way on the bridge. >> work is really important for motorists and what we want to do is compress over 106 nights of nightly work, reduce that impact and make sure we can get this job done in just the four days. >> caltrans recommends 780 in vallejo to 680 at an alternate

route. eastbound lanes stay open. this sewn a westbound closure scheduled to last until early tuesday morning. according to aaa, if you're on the road this weekend, best time to leave today is actually after 6:00 p.m. the worst coming up at 10:00 this morning. tomorrow expect a minimal traffic impact, and the best time to return on monday is after 7:00 at night. new overnight, beloved musician jimmy buffett passed away. the mayor of margaritaville was 76 years old. overnight a statement was posted on his social media and his website saying jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of september 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. nbc's joe fryer has more. ♪ wasting away again in margaritaville ♪ >> reporter: for more than half a century jimmy buffett lived

launching an initiative in tenderloin and other neighborhoods three months ago. state and federal partners came in to help local police with enforcement. since then arrested more than 300 suspected drug dealers along with 450 people for public intoxication. the arrests led to a record 560 felony narcotics cases this year. officers say they've also seized 103 kill low grahams of narcotics with 56 of those kilos being fentanyl. amounts to over half taken in san francisco. overall police seized 135 kill killigrams this year. and ain investigation is under way ar firefighters say someone broke into an east bay home and set it on fire. this is on east street near 94th avenue in oakland, a couple blocks from elmhurst park.

the person suspected of starting the fire is in custody. four people are now displaced. no one was hurt. we continue to cover the fallout from the devastation in maui. right now the biggest struggle is restoring safe water service. some areas of maui are looking at months or even years of work before service is fully restored. for comparison, paradise, california, the town destroyed by the camp fire, is still replacing some service lines and water mains five years later. the death toll on maui still stands at 115. the list of the unaccounted for once topped 1,000 names. that number may soon fall below 50. a lot of people still want to help with maui recovery efforts, but experts are unfortunately warning of scammers. california attorney general

issued and official consumer warning saying crowdfunding sources like gofundme can seem legitimate. too often money doesn't go where it needs to go. tips to avoid being scammed, check to se the charity is registered, as required in thetate of california. don't feel pressured by telemarketers and never give away your personal information. a handful of bay area firefighters who volunteered their time to help with relief efforts on maui after the devastating fires are now back home, and they were recognized for their effort. city supervisor aaron peskin and sfrafk city attorney david chu in chinatown yesterday as the firefighters gathered. ten active duty, one retired, and a first responder made the trip to maui. the first responders used their own vacation time to travel to lahaina where they helped distribute water and other necessities and told the group

clearing for the north bay through this afternoon before we see a few more spotty showers popping up from the south bay. it will travel through the east bay by this afternoon. very light amounts. maybe a quarter inch, tenth inch. very few spotty sprinkling out there. most of that sfaing ober through the sacramento valley. temperatures today hanging on, on the milder side. looking at 71 in san francisco. breezy at times out there closer to the coast. a lot of 77s on the board. look at that from novato, running into dublin and through los gatos. a few 80s pop up at concord and fairfield. tomorrow, temperatures the same seeing better clearing and warmer temperatures going into our holiday monday. 80s in santa rosa. 83. cool from san francisco, 69, plans to head to the coast. a tad cooler and 80s in concord, fairfield 86 and 78 in san jose and those low 80s continue through the santa clara valley.

americans were fly. an 11% increase over last year. if you're hitting the road today aaa estimates the best time to leave is tonight after 6:00 p.m. worst traffic expected around 10:00 this morning. tomorrow, minimal traffic, and monday, best time to return, they say, after 7:00 p.m. if your labor day plans include a trip along interstate 80 in kareem hunt county expect slow traffic and a detour. caltrans close add portion of i-80 for repaving work. all westbound lanes from 780 in vallejo to highway 4 in hercules including the carquinez bridge of closed. caltrans says the closure is necessary to repair the failing roadway and actually says this holiday closure helps get the job done faster. caltrans recommends 780 in vallejo to 680 as an ultimate route. eastbound lanes remaining open. westbound closure, it should reopen tuesday morning.
