caltrans anticipated the work to be done. first, meteorologist kari hall is tracking the forecast. yesterday turned out to be quite a lovely day. >> it was nice, and it's going to continue for the next few days, not many changes as we go into the rest of the week. so people are heading back to work, back to school. you can even see more cars out there in walnut creek. so as we are starting out, our temperatures are in the upper 50s. it is mostly clear and we'll see more sunshine today. we'll be in the upper 60s by 10:00 and upper 70s by noon. the warming trend slows down as we go into the afternoon. so expect it to reach into the upper 80s in concord, while in napa today the high temperature will reach 77 degrees, 80 in san jose, and low 80s for much of the north bay. we'll talk about the rest of the week coming up. mike, the traffic news is not breaking. >> look at this right here, they

just reopened i-80 yesterday, in fact, so it was not 104 hours. i think it was closer to 96 hours. they laid down new concrete, did some landscaping work and major slowdowns for some folks coming from the north bay into the east bay in contra costa county for much of the weekend. but it cleared yesterday evening just about 5:00, between 4:00 and 5:00 yesterday, everything cleared up. we had a smooth drive across the carquinez bridge. folks may have been jammed up at the benicia bridge after the reopening because they had plans to take the split and continued down, and this ended up being clear later in the evening yesterday. no problem this morning, a smooth drive, as well as the rest of contra costa county, despite a crash on the shoulder near alhambra. there's a blip developing just past the toll plaza so i'll double-check on that. meanwhile, the rest of the bay moves smoothly. fremont, we had a history there.

i'll handled it over to you. developing in oakland, an innocent bystander was shot while on a walk near snow park not far from lake merritt. police are offering few details, other than the woman was struck by a stray bullet. she is in critical condition. neighbors say they often saw her on the trail and now they're worried about what this means for their community. >> the community seems welcoming so far, i know there's some dangerous stuff happening, but hopefully it doesn't continue to taint oakland as a bad, dangerous place. >> we did ask opd if they have a description of the gunman, but they haven't told us if they have one yet. police say this is an active investigation and they are encouraging anyone who might have seen something, anything, to call opd. to berkeley, police are investigating a violent carjacking that happened outside the campus on dwight way at shaddock. it happened just about 24 hours ago. the armed robbers targeted a

64-year-old nurse, who was fortunately not injured. her car was later found abandoned in oakland. the exodus is under way for people at burning man where the prolonged celebration finally culminated with the celebratory burning of the man. [ cheers and applause ] >> there he goes late last night. the festival finally came full circle for burners who waited out the rain and muddy mess in the black rock desert, following the few challenging days we've been reporting on. they finally celebrated the fiery event, which had already been twice postponed. organizers are encouraging festival goers to wait until this morning to leave now that the main gates have reopened. but some did not wait around once the gates reopened yesterday. traffic extended for hours into the night. >> this is my camp, we've been

"today in the bay"'s brie jackson is live in d.c. it's been going around. what's the white house saying? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. good morning, kris. so the white house says that jill biden -- that her symptoms

are mild and she'll be staying at the biden family home in delaware. president biden has tested negative. the president will continue to test regularly and no word if his travel schedule will be affected by this. dr. jill biden's diagnosis comes as new research reveals the latest covid mutation may actually be far less contagious than originally feared. the strand ba.286 has popped up in 11 countries, including here in the u.s. it sparked worldwide fears because it looks radically different than any other variant that we've seen. many scientists even claim this current strain could be just as bad as omicron. but two new studies suggest our immune systems are actually better able to fight this strain than any other variant seen so far, meaning fewer infections and less hospitalizations. now, the first lady tested positive for covid back in 2021, at the time she was prescribed

the antiviral paxlovid and told to stay away from others for at least five days, kris. >> and that part hasn't changed, that advice. thank you so much, brie. crews are in the midst of a massive cleanup effort in the san joaquin river delta after fuel spilled from a sinking tugboat. it's happening near bethel island in contra costa county. coast guard teams responded yesterday morning and spent the day deploying containment booms. it's not clear how much fuel spilled, but for perspective, the tugboat that sank can hold 1,000 gallons of diesel and 600 gallons of oil at full capacity. it is 5:07 now. as we look live outside in san jose, it is really clear out there this morning. it felt almost like fall. >> yes, it's been nice, and especially with the breeze picking up in the afternoon to the evening hours and the temperature starts to drop. we were only in the 70s

yesterday for much of the afternoon in san jose, and we've seen 70s and low 80s elsewhere. take a look at morgan hill and the trend we'll have for the morning. light jacket weather. we're in the mid-50s right now, and it's mostly clear. the humidity is starting to creep up just a bit as we see the marine layer and the fog near the coastline stretching into the inland areas. it will be nice and sunny as we go throughout the day and we're keeping those milder temperatures. morgan hill will be one of the warmer spots, reaching into the mid-80s, while oakland today will see a high of 75. novato reaching 82 and san francisco in the upper 60s. we'll talk about the rest of the week's forecast coming up. mike has a look at where we may be able to fill up for a little less. >> we're finding $4.59, on the state's leaderboard, leading with diamond gas and mart on east evelyn and mountain view. it's a consistent low for that city. we're looking at diamond gas from star gas and mart in

good tuesday morning. time to get ready to head back to work. it is 5:13, and in santa rosa it's a cool 51 degrees. it's mostly clear. we've seen drifts of fog moving around parts of the north bay. as we take a look at this trend, it is mostly clear and we're keeping the nice and mild weather. we'll get a look ahead to the rest of the week. not too many changes. we'll talk about that coming up. i'm going to use the same vocabulary, mild. nice and clear for the time being here. san jose northbound 101 with headlights. we'll see a build over the next 20 minutes or so, at least that's what we expect. we'll see how it shapes up. well, good morning and a very happy tuesday to you. now, all of this data is going to be from last friday's close. the markets were closed for labor day on monday. google turns 25 this week, since its founding at stanford. i'll get to tesla in just a second.

first, big news in the chip industry. arm, the british-based company has set its ipo price between $47 and $51 a share. now, it's been a while since we've had a blockbuster ipo. arm was purchased by japan's softbank a few years back for $32 billion. they're going to offer or float about 10% of the company's shares. not clear when that's going to happen, but it will happen on the new york stock exchange. mercedes is out with a new ev concept car, it looks great. most importantly, it will have a longer range than tesla. tesla has been the range leader for years. mercedes cla class will come in a sedan, station wagon and two suvs. meanwhile, tesla continues to cut prices. they did it again at the start of this month, september 1st. on average, they do it about every 38 days. here are the price cuts so far on s and x.

>> he can do it. he really can. kari hall for us with a look at the weather, now that everyone is kind of headed back to work. >> back to school, back to work. it's time to get back to business. and we're going to keep the same nice weather we had over the weekend. we're taking a look at a cloudy start in san francisco this morning. we're going to see the fog kind of linger throughout much of the morning and temperatures holding steady in the upper 50s now. we'll be in the low 60s as we go throughout the rest of today. and then as we take a look at our valley temperatures, just maybe a degree or two warmer than it was yesterday. martinez headed for 83 degrees and we'll see in mountain view a high of 77 degrees. we'll bring it up, also, a couple of degrees for san jose, up to 80 degrees, and 84 in san martin and in los gatos. about the same in santa rosa as well. now, tomorrow we're going to see temperatures cooling off a bit for those inland valleys, so temperatures still going up and down, a stronger breeze and more

fog at the coastline will help keep temperatures a little lower than we usually see for early september. and then on thursday it's really not changing that much. let's take a look at livermore and see what's ahead. so we're going to have some mild weather through at least the first part of the weekend. by sunday, we do see it getting just a couple of degrees warmer, but that's not a drastic change there, and we'll bring it back down for the middle to end of next week. so taking a look at our seven-day forecast, we are going to see temperatures up just a bit for the weekend, but overall it's not too much of a major change. it looks pretty good as we settle into this pattern for also san francisco as well. mike, you've been tracking a crash. what's the update? >> the good news, no injuries, and it's off to the right shoulder. as you're traveling south, counter-commute on 101, a crash is over on the shoulder, activity heading that way. the morning commute will build in about 10 to 15 minutes, but we might see a slower build because some folks might be out

of town. there was a report of a wrong-way driver, which raises all sorts of alerts, but everything is moving smoothly on the shoulder. still some conversation going on with whoever was driving that vehicle on south 85. over here, a crash highway 4, still on the grid at alhambra. it should be cleared at any second. at the bay bridge, the slowing we saw has cleared from the grid. no incidents reported. a nice flow of traffic for dublin. no problem out of the altamont pass toward the dublin interchange, although we may see slowing in the next 20 minutes as well. 5:40 is when things start to change on the green sensors. back to you. >> thank you, mike. new national recognition years in the making. next, a bay area high school football team is named the best in the nation ever. ever! we're going to hear from one of its biggest stars. ♪♪ ♪ ain't no mountain high ♪

forever about the niners, the warriors and the giants. but there is a bay area sports dynasty that people might not know about. >> yeah, espn just recognized them in a list of the best high school football teams of all time. >> pressure, throws. not going to get in. dropped at the 3. >> ranked at the very top ever, concord's de la salle team, the spartans that year beat long beach on national tv in what was called the game of the century, and it was all in the midst of a record 151 game winning streak from 1992 to 2004. maurice jones drew starred on that team and he is now back at de la salle coaching after a nice career in the nfl. >> i think they got it right. i think it was the best team ever.

shaping up this morning. a new milestone for two bay area reservoirs. how all of last winter's rains are still paying off when it comes to water levels. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thank you so much for starting your tuesday with us. i'm kira klapper. >> i'm kris sanchez. marcus and laura have the day off. we are going to take a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall, tracking what we can expect as we're inching toward true fall. >> we had nice, cool weather over the weekend and it will continue to be at least a couple of degrees below what we typically see for early september. in oakland, it is a busy start to this tuesday morning and we're seeing a few clouds here and there. it's right now 60 degrees. we may come down another degree or two as we go into the next few hours, but eventually it will clear out and shape up to be a really nice day as we head

for the mid-70s. we'll see a couple of degrees warmer in spots like livermore reaching 85 degrees, 84 in santa rosa, half moon bay will reach into the mid-60s. mike says so far it's a light tuesday commute. >> it is, and we expect that coming off of a holiday weekend. we're looking at the crash at the bottom of the screen that is over on the shoulder, south 101, that should be cleared about the grid any second. mild slowing for 84. northbound 101 should change from green to yellow just above where it says san jose, just north of the 280/680 interchange. emeryville, we've been seeing more traffic. no slowing on the sensors, but for traffic and taillights. more headlights at the bay bridge toll plaza. those lights should turn on at about 5:35 or 5:40. new overnight, caltrain service is expected to be back

to normal after a train struck and killed someone last night near the redwood city station. so far, we don't have a lot of details. a exodus is officially under way at burning man. those who literally stuck it out in the mud are joining those who decided to leave early after a weekend deluge of rain that left them stranded in the black rock desert. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live for us. i actually had to ask our producers, because i thought this exodus was last night, but getting out of there is still a big challenge this morning. >> reporter: correct. so yesterday the organizers of burning man, kira and kris, they were starting to let people leave. last night the organizers tweeted out the wait time to get out of the burning man camp area was seven hours and counting. that was last night, so they're urging people or recommending them to wait until later last night or until tomorrow, which a lot of people are going to be

doing. around 70,000 so-called burners were told to shelter in place over the weekend and conserve food and water as it began to rain and turn the desert camp sites into a muddy mess. the ground has started to dry out and driving is now possible, but getting out is slow. sausalito resident anastasia left yesterday, as soon as the gates reopened. she went straight to a car wash after being stuck on the road with thousands of burners for hours. >> they told us how to behave and there were people responsible for keeping the spirit. >> it created a different kind of challenge and adventure, so i think our team was just ready to, like, stick it and go strong. >> we survived. >> we stayed positive. >> reporter: some burners told us that they wanted to see the burning man sculpture burn down, an annual ritual. that happened last night.

it had been postponed twice because of the mud and rain. others are waiting for their gear to dry out before they leave. also, law enforcement is still investigating the death of one festival goer who was a 32-year-old man. the cause is under investigation, but organizers say it was not storm related. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. those folks, a lot of muddy mess to clean up once they get home. the aftermath of the maui firestorm has people in one neighborhood praising the heroic actions of one man who became stuck while trying to evacuate. >> it's right there in the bushes. >> what? >> the fire, it's in the bushes! >> he and his wife were leaving lahaina when they saw flames in front of a neighbor's house and he jumped into action, using a hose to put out the fire. the home was saved. the couple never received any official alerts about the fire. >> i haven't personally heard of

a single notification that anyone received in all of my social network, period. >> how many people do you think you've talked to? >> hundreds. >> the emergency response is still under investigation, but the owner of that home that was saved said that he only figured out what happened when he viewed that video later on social media. he says he plans to put the couple in his will. new video showing armed robbers terrorizing cashiers at an oakland 7-eleven that happened on international and 5th avenue near lake merritt. police say the robbers got away with $10,000 in tobacco products. a few hours later, early yesterday, police discovered a man deceased on the sidewalk just steps from that same store. investigators are calling it a homicide and possible dumping of a body, but it's not believed to be tied to that robbery. the city of vallejo just rescheduled two town hall meetings focused on police response times.

those meetings were originally scheduled for this thursday, but they are being moved to september 14th. it covers the pd's proposal to reduce responses to certain unverified alarm calls because of staffing issues. the chief says things like silent alarms are low priority. it's not clear why the meetings were changed. new this morning, some good news in the north bay. the sonoma water district's two main reservoirs are at their highest combined storage levels since 1985. two years ago lake mendocino and lake sonoma were barely half full, but of course that all changed after last winter's rains. the agency points out the reservoirs are also at their highest storage levels ever for this time of year. a live look for you now over san francisco. you can see all the twinkling lights on the transamerica pyramid. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall as a lot of folks are heading back out after a nice weekend. >> it's a nice, long weekend,

nice, cool weekend for much of the bay area, and that continues today, as some of us are starting out with clouds. it looks like it's all clear in hayward. it is 60 degrees and our temperatures are in the upper 50s over the next couple of hours, as we see a few clouds this morning. we'll be clearing out as we go throughout the day. a gradual warming trend for us as we keep some of the same weather we've had recently. dublin reaching 82, 82 in novato and 75 in san mateo, and we'll see a high of 89 in fairfield. we'll talk about the rest of the week coming up. mike, you've got an update on the big weekend closure. >> it might not be a surprise, but it was at the time when caltrans shut down westbound interstate 80, it wrapped up 12 hours early. it was set to wrap up early this morning at 5:00 a.m. workers started repaving the road last thursday night, closed that westbound bridge for most of the weekend. drivers say they do notice the difference. >> the road seems less lumpy,

not as lumpy as it was before. there seemed like some potholes and they fixed them. >> i haven't been here in a long time and i noticed it was smoother, so i could drive faster. don't tell chp. >> we'll take less lumpy and faster. caltrans says it knows the project caused inconveniences for many people over the weekend, but one spokesman called it short-term pain for long-term gain. let's get out to the roadways. we do have a little slowing approaching the carquinez bridge, but that is standard. we also see the bridge out of vallejo for westbound 37. now, after it reopened early, you would think everything would be great, but yesterday evening after the reopening we did see later in the evening a lot of traffic to the benicia bridge because i think folks had prepared for the closure and planned their route down here. thank you for following us on friday and thursday.

in fremont, expect the temperature to reach 79 degrees, and some mid-70s for san mateo, daly city headed for 63 degrees, another cool day in san francisco with breezy winds and a lot of clouds throughout much of the day. we'll see temperatures in napa headed for 77 degrees. really nice weather continues. it doesn't change too much over the next few days, as we take a look at santa rosa, the ten-day forecast showing that we'll be in the upper 70s and low 80s through saturday. it will be a little warmer on sunday, but it's not a huge difference here. then we'll see it going right back down for the middle to end of next week, so no extreme heat in the forecast. we're starting out each day with our typical marine layer, the clouds, and then clearing out. the weekend is looking a little more sunny and warm, while san francisco will see temperatures in the 60s and lower 70s. mike, you're taking us to san jose. >> it's a little slower, better than it was just a few minutes

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." in our climate in crisis, a local nonprofit organization is sounding the alarm on 18 bay area communities that need climate action now. five are being labeled as hot spots due to overlapping risks and disasters making them a top priority. for the last 65 years, greenbelt alliance has made it their mission to educate, advocate to

make sure communities are resilient to a changing climate. after extensive research, they're pairing up with local nonprofits to begin urgent work in those hotspots to identify and deploy nature-based solutions to build resilience to worsening climate impacts. so here are the top five hotspots. southwestern santa rosa due to heat risk, sea level rise and flooding risks, north richmond due to flooding, and southern alameda county and newark along the bay to shoreline for wetland protection, as well as gilroy due to wildfires, extreme heat and flooding. they need more community volunteers to put the plans in action. >> at the local level there is the biggest opportunity for change and adaptation will
