like summer. record high temps, 10 to 20 degrees above average temps. al will tell us about it in a moment. >> look forward to that. first, we start with that breaking news overnight. first lady, dr. jill biden, testing positive for covid after traveling with her husband throughout the long holiday weekend. this comes ahead of a major overseas trip for the president who so far has tested negative. nbc chief white house correspondent peter alexander joins us now with details. hey, peter, what do you know? >> reporter: the first lady's office says dr. biden is experiencing mild symptoms right now, that she will remain at their home in delaware while the president is here at the white house. this is the second time that she has gotten covid. the first was last august. the president, you remember, had it weeks earlier. they both took paxlovid back then. they both had no serious symptoms. the president and the first lady toured the disaster zone after

hurricane idalia, they met with local leaders there. spent sunday together in rehoboth. the white house press secretary said the president tested negative last night, that he will be tested at a regular cadence this week while monitoring for symptoms. of course, as the oldest president in the u.s., president biden's age as ham under scrutiny ahead of the 2020 election. he and the first lady have both been vaccinated and received multiple booster shots. >> they spent a lot of time together this weekend and there is a high-profile trip ahead. on the horizon so how worried is his team that that trip may be impacted? >> yeah, this is a big visit with world leaders. and right now there is no indication that her having covid will have any impact on his scheduled trip to the g20. he is set to leave washington on thursday. of course, that all changes if he tests positive. but at least for now, his public schedule is unchanged. today, he's going to be hosting, awarding the medal of army to an army veteran, right here at the

white house, hoda. >> peter alexander for us at the white house. thank you. we turn to the chaos at burning man. this is a live look at the nevada desert with thousands of participants are making their way out of this festival, and this backup that you see there, ignited by a massive rain that turned the area into a muddy mess over the holiday weekend and thousands were stranded. nbc's liz coates is there for us. hi, liz. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are here at what is called the gate, the entrance in and out of burning man. this road behind me was covered in mud, making it hard to get around. as you can see now, it is drying up and thousands of festival goers are making their way out, leaving a burning man they won't soon forget. mud, muck and now gridlock. that was the scene monday as thousands of burners made their way out of the nevada desert any way they could. so what is your plan to get out? >> hitchhike.

by the minute. the news friday prompted school closures and now expanded perimeters. this morning, pennsylvania state police official any taking over the manhunt, saying they're confident they're closing in on convicted killer danelo cavalcante. police releasing this doorbell footage. there have been four confirmed sightings between a four-mile radius where he escaped thursday morning. this most recent sighting taking place over the long holiday weekend. >> it was a trooper actually that observed him at some distance, gave chase but was unable because of the terrain and some other obstacles was unable to get to him. >> reporter: authorities believe cavalcante is hiding out in a heavily wooded area and growing more desperate as they close in. >> the only thing i had to defend myself was a picture frame. >> reporter: ryan drummond believes his home might have been one of those hiding spots. he flickered the lights to know he was there. >> and then he flicked the

lights back a few moments which was the real panic moment. >> reporter: drummond said his wife called 911 and he said he watched the man leave his house. how hard was your heart racing it was like a moment of disbelief. >> yes, my heart was beating fast. >> reporter: danelo cavalcante was convicted for the brutal stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend. he's also wanted for a 2017 homicide in his native brazil. police have been playing audio recordings from choppers and patrol cars of cavalcante's mother, speaking in portuguese, pleading for him to turn himself in. and cops are reminding residents to remain vigilant. >> we're just scared, paranoid, yeah. >> reporter: and to call police if they see anything suspicious. authorities aren't saying how he escaped from the chester county prison. but state police did say they are willing to use deadly force if necessary. there is a $10,000 reward on the table for any information that leads to his capture. savannah. >> all right, george solis,

thank you. 12 minutes after 7:00. time to say hello to craig this morning. hey, craig. >> hey, hoda, savannah, good to see both of you. good morning to you as well. there is word this morning of a potential meeting tied to the war in ukraine that will be closely watched by officials here in the united states. according to a new report, north korea's kim jong-un may soon travel to russia for direct talks with vladimir putin. nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons has more on this one. kier, first of all, i mean, obviously, this is a significant meeting. what might it mean for the war in ukraine? >> reporter: that's right, craig. one measure of how big a deal this is is how uncomfortable the kremlin sounds this morning. spokesperson dmitry peskov refusing in the past few hours to confirm that president putin plans to meet north korean leader kim jong-un.

answering, we have nothing to say on this topic. while a spokesperson for the national security council saying kim jong-un expects leader-level diplomatic engagement in russia. we reported from russia's far east the last time kim met putin in 2019. kim traveling by train to vladivostok. u.s. officials saying he plans to do the same again this month. in recent years, kim has more often been seen overseeing his missile program, even taking his young daughter with him. but last month, he met russia's defense minister sergei shoigu. he was trying to convince ukraine to sell artillery ammunition to russia. the biden administration has publicized putin and kim's plan to prevent the meeting from happening and a deal being done. >> so, keir, china is going to great lengths to build this partnership with russia. what's -- what's the, perhaps, big picture strategy here? do we know? >> reporter: yeah. you'll remember just before the

as simple as they read some articles and they shouldn't have what is the gamut of conduct you might be talking about as mentioned, two of the jurors have lawyers now, so that kind of raises some eyebrows as well. >> his lawyer already hinted it has to do with outside influence. could it be a person that talked to them that wasn't supposed to. it could be they read something. but, again, would that be enough if there was overwhelming evidence not just of the financial issues that the judge let in, but all the other evidence right? we all sat through that trial we all listened to that evidence remember, the judge who is deciding this in the first instance is the same judge that was presiding over the trial, judge newman >> the reality is, even in some universe, he gets a new trial and managed to get exonerated, he's going to spend life in prison on the financial crimes. >> that's the thing, remember, he's already expected to plead

nbc's tom costello joins us from rockville, maryland, with the latest on this tom, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, this is a very, very high-stakes gamble that the uaw and the car makers are faced off against each other, and the stakes could not be higher. their contract expires on september 14th if they don't come to an agreement, we could see a major impact nationwide. the union is demanding things that the uaw, or rather, the big three automakers say are simply unrealistic. they include a 46% pay hike. they also want to work a 32-hour week but with 40-hour pay. and the restoration of their traditional pension benefits now, again, the automakers say that these demands are simply unrealistic. separately, ford motor said it offered its union a 9% pay hike which is well below the 36% hike that the uaw is demanding as well we're talking about 146,000 workers that could go on strike. if they do, you can imagine that will have a devastating impact on production of automobiles and

the supply chain you could see prices start going up quickly on cars and parts i just talked to the parts manager at this dealer here in maryland who says he's stocking up on parts because he's convinced that a strike is very, very likely. president biden says, though, he thinks it can be avoided but with a shortage of workers and intense competition in the auto industry, many analysts say the union here has leverage over the big three. very quickly, the president of the union is saying the following. he says the big executives at car companies they get, quote, out of control pensions. they don't even have to -- that they don't even need, rather they get tremendous health care benefits they could work whatever schedules they want. but he says their union workers don't get those benefits again, they have about a week to settle this. savannah >> all right we'll see if they can resolve it. tom, thank you new developments this morning in the ongoing migrant crisis as cities across the country struggle to provide housing for asylum seekers

here in new york, there are growing concerns about overcrowding in schools with an influx of new students expected this week. nbc's stephanie gosk has the details on this one. stef, good morning >> reporter: hey, craig. good morning to you. schools open up here in new york in just a few days there have been hundreds of migrant families looking to enroll their children. but as you know, there are limited resources and there are some parents that are concerned that this school system won't be able to handle the surge this morning, cities across the country are dealing with an ongoing migrant influx here in new york, the school year is set to begin thursday with the surge of new students. >> the latest round of asylum seekers and migrants we're receiving, there is a large number of them children and families. >> reporter: since last july nearly 19,000 students in temporary housing, many of them migrants, have enrolled in city schools.

under new york state law, all kids between ages 5 and 21 are guaranteed a public education, regardless of their immigration status >> we completely changed our school funding formula to provide additional funding to schools based on the number of students in temporary housing that they enroll. >> reporter: but some parents worry school wills be stretched too thin. >> the problem is we are not equipped to help them, and we should be. >> reporter: it comes as a growing number of asylum seekers are arriving in cities nationwide many still stuck in crowded, temporary housing at hotels and other makeshift shelters it's become a flash point for residents as more migrants arrive by the bus load berlin suarez arrived from venezuela last month with her three daughters. her dream, a better quality of life for her and her children. city officials here in new york say they are committed to make this work. they are dedicating an additional $110 million to the school budget this year.

of the skin cells and the basal cells which are merkel cells send signals up to the brain >> yeah. >> and, so, this skin cancer is so rare that there is less than 3,000 cases diagnosed per year, and the incident is less than 1 in 150,000 people. >> it is not related to sun exposure necessarily. >> well, it actually could be. so it's usually seen in elderly men, fair skinned with a lot of sun exposure with some immunosuppressant issue going on and then there is actually a viral component to it. it is thought that the merkel cell polyoma virus is related. >> does it look different than a normal kind of skin cancer and it sounded like jimmy buffett was battling it for four years. >> yes so merkel cell carcinoma is usually red or pink or purple in color. it looks like a bump or cyst that presents, and then it grows really rapidly so people will notice this red bump that could start out looking like a pimple.

then it becomes a cyst then it looks like a larger growth and eventually it brings people to the doctor the key is early diagnosis. >> early. >> you know, it brings to mind that this is a deadly, deadly disease. now we're getting to fall. it is a good chance to remind everybody just because the temps cool doesn't mean you don't need to wear your sunscreen. on a cloudy day and such >> this is a great time of year to do your body check, evaluate and make sure there aren't funny moles or growths make sure you are wearing spf every day. skin cancer can affect all skin types. it doesn't affect just fair-skinned people. it can affect anybody. and merkel cell is also not so discerning it can occur in anybody. the key here is to wear your spf, to look at your body. don't ignore things that are changing if you see any signs of skin cancer, and there are the a, b, c, d, es of melanoma but they reallial ply to all types of skin cancer, because skin cancer is on the outside of
