system closer to the north we'll keep a close eye on it the one-time leader of one of the major extremist groups involved in the events of january 6 received his sentence tuesday. it's the longest punishment of the ongoing prosecution of those who attempted to overturn the 2020 election. a process that seems to have no end in sight for more, we go to brie jackson in washington. good morning, brie, what happened in the courtroom on tuesday? >> reporter: good morning frances. on tuesday, henrique tarrio, the former chairman of the proud boys, was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison he was convicted back in may along with three other members of the far-right group on seditious conspiracy charges while prosecutors sought longer sentences than what were ultimately hand down, tarrio's term is the longest for anyone convicted in the events of january 6.

he was not present at the capitol as he was arrested nearly two days before on an outstanding warrant. prosecutors argue it was an intinka intentional act on his part and he acted as a general rather than a soldier he read a statement where he apologized to members of law enforcement and that he wants nothing to do with politics after he serves his time in prison tarrio's remarks were a far cry from what his co-defendant said at his sentencing last week, shouting "trump won", after receiving a ten-year prison term >> and brie, what's the federal government saying about this >> reporter: in a statement, attorney general merrick garland emphasized the role that the proud boys played in attempting to year tu to overturn the 2020 election. he said they received sentences
