improve campus safety. the respiratory virus season is closing in on us. the vaccinations recommended by doctors. also, back in session. the u.s. senate resumes this morning, after a month-long recess. at the top of the agenda, avoiding a government shutdown. the latest from washington on the push to beat an important deadline. this is "today in the bay." good wednesday morning to you at 5:00. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at the roads with mike in just a bit. first, we want to talk about the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. >> we're just going to continue the weather we've seen from the past few days. >> i like it. >> it has been so nice out there. we are starting out with some fog in san francisco. it's going to be a mostly cloudy morning and eventually clearing out. let's head to the south bay with a look at what we're expecting once again, temperatures in the mid to upper 80s.
5:02 am
this is about normal for this time of year. we continue, once again, with some mild weather for parts of the inner bay, slightly warmer temperatures for the interior valleys, with danville reaching 86 degrees. we'll see temperatures in redwood city reaching 79 degrees, while san francisco will reach into the upper 60s once again, and for the north bay in the low to mid-80s. we'll talk about if there's any changes ahead in a few minutes. mike, you're hearing about a bad start to someone's day. >> exactly right. let's take you out and show you so far a good start as far as the sensors go for most of the bay area. altamont pass, the exception, with a little slowing. that's no exception. we're looking in hayward, southbound 880, reports of a crash, two or three vehicles are involved. don't know about injuries because chp should be arriving shortly. i don't think there are injuries, but i do know the call indicated someone, at least one of the parties was driving pretty aggressively down through the area. it sounds like someone is

underlying condition like one of those. black americans are twice as likely to be hospitalized and, sadly, as many as 58,000 people died from the flu last year, the doctor encourages getting all vaccines available from flu to covid and rsv. >> the public has this thought that vaccinations protect you from infections. they don't protect you from infections. vaccinations protect you from severe disease. what people need to understand is that what causes severe disease, those symptoms, right, stuffy nose, achiness, cough, shortness of breath, it's actually the immune system's response to the environment. the immune system's response to the presence of a virus. >> reporter: with regards to covid, fortunately most people will not die from that virus anymore, but there is a high risk of getting long covid, which can lead to months of not feeling well, brain fog, shortness of breath, additionally you can miss work or a big event like a wedding as a result.
5:05 am
for the first time, there will be three different vaccines against covid, rsv and the flu. if your last shot was four to six months ago, then your immunity is waning. the new covid booster will likely be ready in a few weeks. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, bob. continuing coverage now this morning, classes canceled today at oakland skyline high school following gunfire that led to a lengthy campus lockdown yesterday. no one was injured. the district tells us several people were later taken into custody. students say shots were fired near the school theatre. parents say more needs to be done to protect their children. >> i just think that we need metal detectors. i don't think that we should wait for anybody to get hurt, and seeing this was an issue last year with the gun being brought on campus, and, again, this year, we shouldn't be waiting. >> we're going to review all of that and see where we can tighten things down to ensure that we're doing everything possible to ensure the

5:22 am
we're going to see high pressure keeping that away and we're also going to see for the pacific northwest some changes ahead that could bring about some cooler temperatures. it doesn't affect the bay area until next week, so we are going to have a slightly warmer weekend, with napa seeing the trend going from 80s to low 90s, and then back down for the middle to end of next week. so we are going to have some cooler weather ahead, but that comes after a slight boost in temperatures for the weekend into monday. then taking a look at our seven-day forecast, nice and mild weather, very seasonable temperatures than what we typically see for early september, but it will be a little warmer for the weekend, while san francisco gets more sunshine and highs reaching into the low 70s. mike, do you have more info on the east bay crash? >> i do. i want to point out what i've circled, highway 37 shows that little bit of slowing, highway 4 will follow in the next few minutes. there you go, we have three blips right there.

5:39 am
temperatures for the weekend, so i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike, things look a little different for the bay bridge. >> yeah, we typically expect to see traffic stacking up a bit on a wednesday, and we had the volume we expect in yesterday's commute after 7:00 it really kicked in. we'll look for that today. we see coming off of the over-crossing, the lanes off to the far right as you approach, they got really backed up, starting to move better now. did get a report of an overheated vehicle somewhere near the toll plaza. that's probably what happened and they probably cleared it quickly. the bridge crews are very good about that. highway 37, look at all of this, in the last ten minutes highway 4 shows so much more of that distance between pittsburg and concord, with slower drives below the speed limit, yellow and orange, below 50 miles per hour in some cases. 242 shows a bit of volume, but that's the predicted pattern. we didn't expect this much slowing, but we do have this crash we've been monitoring southbound 880 around a street still slow, still vehicles to clear from the area.
5:40 am
three to five have to be totally cleared from the slow lane and this will start to be a problem if they don't clear that soon heading south from hayward to the san mateo bridge. we're looking at later on today, we have a game at the coliseum, 12:30, midday game. but then after work, that's when the game is getting out, so watch for more traffic. other side of the bay, folks heading over here toward the adobe creek trail in palo alto, there will be an issue for the walking trail. they're doing some maintenance. that's for pedestrian traffic. we've got you covered. back to you. 5:39 this morning. a major breakthrough for u.s. tennis. coming up this morning on "today in the bay," a new generation of american stars crushing it at the u.s. open. we're going to show you one feat that happened long before anyone ever first heard of the automated line call. missiles hitting kyiv this morning, even as america promises more support for ukraine.
