right now at 5:00, back to school. classes resume on a high school campus locked down last friday by gunfire. we're live there this morning with the changes parents and students can expect to see

today. and the end of summer is a bigger bummer in the south bay because someplace we always enjoyed with our families is closed forever. we will talk about what is next for raging waters. on the money. the niners reel in their star hold out with a record breaking deal. the big question is will he be ready for sunday's kickoff. this is "today in the bay." >> for that price, he better. >> yeah. >> that is true. good morning to you. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. >> let's get to the forecast with meteorologist, kari hall. how are we looking? >> looks good again today, and on repeat from the last several days if you enjoyed that weather. in oakland, a live look, and temperatures nice and cool and a

few temperatures overhead. in the 60s, and we will dip another couple degrees before sunrise, and the rest of the day we will see it clearing out, and temperatures staying in the 60s throughout much of the morning and reach into the mid-70s. as we take a look at what to expect, it will be in the upper 60s for san francisco today, and 85 for concord. 86 for livermore, and 86 in morgan hill. we do see a slight warm-up for the weekend and i will have more on that in just a few minutes. mike, we had a freeway closed for most of the day yesterday? >> exactly. the closure here, there was pavement sludge, and we talked about that, and it was the stuff that went into paving the roadways, and the westbound direction was closed -- basically it was closed through the 11:00 p.m. news, and it reopened this morning. we will look at the map, and for those that don't know where 780 is, here's the carquinez bridge,

and this was closed yesterday, and both ways are open now. we are looking at a smooth drive coming down, and westbound 80 is the smooth route. the rest of the east bay moving smoothly. we have a disabled vehicle that we will check on. and the altamont, the drive just starting to build, right on cue. back to you. >> thank you. students rocked by gunfire return to class today in oakland. while the case seems closed, concerns are front and center. >> today in the bay's bob redell is live outside the skyline high school. parents are demanding security. >> reporter: yeah, some parents are asking the oakland unified to install metal detectors at skyline. this was the scene on skyline

late tuesday morning, and there was a large police response and the school was locked down after somebody fired a gun on campus, and they say the shooter was at least one fellow teenager. opd did arrest two teenagers. parents say there has been too much violence on campus, including a stabbing last year and a reported of a gun on the school grounds and fights. they are reviewing the security measures. students were given time to process what happened on tuesday, and today the district will provide counsellors to students or staff that need to talk to somebody. reporting live outside skyline high school in oakland, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> thank you. a plan to boost safety, and

it follows a string of incidents. last month two students were stabbed on the campus of james lick high school. they survived, but police later determined the teenagers involved were not part of the school, and a new coalition has been formed. this is where the leaders plan to address board members. the nfl season is yet to begin, but suddenly things are looking a little brighter for the 49 faithful. their top defender back in the fold. >> sorry for the scare. >> let's go win some games. that's nick bosa arriving in san josé last night via private jet from florida. there's no need for bosa to fly coach these days. he just got signed a new

newscast for you at 9:00 p.m. families across the south bay, well, they are feeling the sting this morning of a surprise closure. a single post on social media raging waters is saying good-bye. >> that's right. to the dismay of a lot of families. today in the bay's kris sanchez is here, and talk about being left high and dry. kids of all ages want to know what happened. >> i had the news on when i was making dinner, and my daughter and i were, like, forever? that's how we found out. and the raging waters workers also surprised. raging waters has been a favorite for summers, and they announced the close for summer, which we expected, but they won't reopen next summer, which we did not expect and that's how the employees found out, too. they said it was a business decision, and the city that owns

the land tells us they only had a year left on their lease. city leaders say they will try and maximize the opportunity for something new. >> i think this is an opportunity for us as a city to be able to explore an amenity for the residents of our city that could provide entertainment, a place for community gathering and also a place for, you know, youth, especially in the area to have jobs. >> feels sad for the community, if anything. i grew up across the street, and it was a lot of jobs for a lot of the teenagers around here, and a lot of summertime money. >> the owners of raging waters shutdown the sacramento location about a year ago, so it was not the nicest place, and it was not like disneyland where it was constantly being spruced up, but it was still a nice place to go and a nice place for the kids to go. now we know great america is going to be going away at some

point, too. >> yeah, a lot of the adventure venue for kids, it's tough. >> the city says they have gotten contacted from people and businesses that would be interested -- >> oh, that's good. >> just not another mall. >> nobody is going to the mall either. another water park. >> that would be nice. >> thank you. it's eight after 5:00 right now. firefighters making good progress containing a grass fire. as of last night it was 50% contained. the so-called creek fire started yesterday afternoon at highway 29 south of lower lake. it burned a little under 30 acres. officials downgraded evacuation orders within a couple hours, but the fire teams are putting out hot spots and the cause is under investigation. and it has been pleasant

weather. >> yeah, slightly cooler than normal temperatures across much of the bay area. starting out with fog, and it's clearing out especially in san francisco. we are once again seeing the low clouds rolling back in and it may drizzle for a little while, but we will head towards more sunshine. morgan hill in the mid-50s. it will be cloudy through about 8:00, and then sunshine and 60s at 11:00, and 75 at noon. we will make it into the mid-80s for today. oakland headed for a high of 74 degrees, and 80 today in napa and in santa rosa. we will talk about what is ahead for the weekend coming up. might get you ready for the gas prices at the pump. >> there are lower prices i am talking about right here, but santa clara county, the best we can do in san josé, that specific city, 4.75 at express gas on redmond avenue here.

two big announcements this week. first, the saudis said they would continue to limit their production through the end of the year, and president biden surprised people by making two big announcements on wednesday. first, he is canceling the oil leases in the national wildlife refuge in alaska, the permits that president trump allowed to go forward. president biden set aside more than half of the national petroleum preserve in alaska as well, and drilling prohibited in 13 million of the 23 million acres of land. the national petroleum reserve is staggeringly big. doesn't look like it on the map, but 23 million acres in yellow makes it the size of indiana. it's exactly what it sounds like, land with oil underneath and set aside by the federal government for emergencies, and it was president harding that set that land aside and the oil in case the navy needed it in

the future, and it's home to a lot of wildlife. what does this mean for gas prices? well, we never really pulled oil out of the national reserves, so that doesn't change anything. we do pool oil out of the an arctic wildlife refuge, but that is just getting started. gas prices are going up worldwide, not just us. in japan, gas prices just set a new record since they have recorded them, and it's less than we pay every day, right? california has oil. japan doesn't. we produce about one-third of the oil we use. what is going on? the government subsidizes the gas prices. if you want your tax money going towards people buying gas, can you do it like the japanese model and have record prices of

$4 something a gallon. >> not my call. we will put it to a vote. thank you. >> you bet. talk about a roller coaster ride for san francisco's convention business. as google is folding up its tent, the city is getting a nice boost from the hottest technology. there is new word a.i. chatgpt will have it's first conference on november 6th. the one-day event will bring hundreds of developers from around the world, and also this week google announced plans to move its conference to las vegas. the bookings for that center are down 24%, and that was before the dreamforce convention considering a new location as well. and then love on full display at 30 rock. >> yeah, the "today" show this

they want to head here for their honeymoon and we will let them know what to expect as we head into the weekend. outside, the temperatures and the forecast for the morning in santa rosa, temperatures were in the mid-50s. it's a cloudy start. we will continue to see the clouds and temperatures in the mid-50s through about 9:00, and then clearing sunny and very nice and the weather we have seen from the past few days continues today. here's a look at our high temperatures. we are back into the low and mid-80s for the south bay with los gatos reaching 85 degrees. 86 in morgan hill. for the east bay, mostly mid-80s with antioch headed for 88 degrees, and 84 in danville. in hayward, expect a high of 78 degrees. we are going to keep it mild as well for much of the peninsula with mid to upper 70s for san mateo, redwood city. palo alto reaching 80 today, and 60s along the coastline. we are back in the 60s for san francisco and for the northbound, expect it to reach

80 in santa rosa and 88 degrees. clearlake and novato reachingle 88 degrees. it gets slightly warmer for the weekend, going from 90 today to 95 on monday, and then into next week those temperatures come down just a bit so the spike in temperatures doesn't last that long. as we take a look at now hurricane nova over performing on the forecast, it's now a category 5 hurricane off the coast of mexico, and it's moving quickly and is expected to weaken as it moves up the baja, california, peninsula, and basically well out over the pacific and not expected to affect any land. we are talking in the atlantic, hurricane lee, now a category 1 hurricane. they have been watching this from the caribbean, because it's expected to intensify and curve back out into the atlantic, maybe affecting bermuda.

they are not expecting a major impact on the east coast. closer to home, look the our inland temperatures and what to expect. a slight warming trend going into the end of the weekend and early next week. sunshine continues in that forecast while san francisco is going to have nice and mild weather with low 70s for the weekend. mike, you were going to show us the bay bridge toll plaza? >> yeah, i was, so here it is. the pavement is so sparsely populated, but we are seeing more traffic flow per each lane, and i didn't count it but just did a visual. slowing already as we go up the incline, and we lose lanes getting on to the span itself. and looking at a smooth drive across all of these bridges for the toll plaza. 780 fully reopened late last night or early this morning, depending how you look at it. alameda county just showing a

ginger, the girl and her father were out for a bike ride and then it took a turn nobody expected. >> yeah, a tragic story. it's very hard to start your day off with. oakland department of transportation are acknowledging the city is behind the curve when it comes to biker's safety, and they add it has been a historic. they are reminding drivers to be mindful of bicyclists, especially when opening doors. the grief and pain was seen last night for the memorial for the 4-year-old girl that was riding on the back of her dad's bicycle around lake merritt on august 6th. a driver who was sitting in a parked car opened his door and knocked her and her dad into

oncoming traffic. they were not hit by any cars, and when she was initially examined her vitals looked to be okay, but later that night she was unresponsive. she was found to have a blood clot. >> the doctors confirmed that maya was never going to wake up again and that we could keep her body alive but she would never know us. >> i am hoping that maya's legacy would be the city doing something about bike safety. >> really heartbreaking to hear from the family there. the city saying they will put up signage reminding drivers of bikers, and that will happen soon. the department of transportation said their goal is to repave the

but take a look, the sun is coming up over arrowhead stadium. it will be crazy when a few thousand of my closest friends join me a bit later this afternoon here. trust me, this city, they are ready for kickoff. chiefs' kingdom has been, well, beating the drum for the start of the season since the last time their team played, which worked out pretty good. now seven months later, the super bowl excitement continues. >> everywhere you go, everybody is talking chiefs. i came home to my husband and i said, the guy at home depot wanted to talk about the chiefs. >> the cheerleaders and flags turning the streets into pep rallies. the visiting lions are feeling the energy. >> we know we are in a big stadium with a lot of people so we are ready to go.

the morning, and sunshine in the afternoon. thinking of fall, and maybe getting pictures with the kids early this season, and the pumpkin patch will be open this weekend and we will see temperatures there in the low to mid-60s throughout the day. maybe wrapping up the weekend with the oakland pride parade. that will be happening on sunday and starts at 11:00 in the morning. it will be a cool start but shaping up to be a very comfortable day with highs in the low 70s as the festivities continue throughout the day. if you do plan to go to the beach this weekend, santa cruz looks like a great destination with mid to upper 70s for highs throughout the weekend. just seeing the clouds passing by with a little sun for the afternoon. mike, you have been watching the commute this morning and it seems smooth for now? >> yeah, highway 4 really showing a good amount of traffic, similar to the amount yesterday as far as the amount of slowing. we will track that and that could mean an issue for walnut

cloudy morning, and we are headed from the low 60s to the upper 60s and sunny and clear by noon. another nice day on tap. we will talk about any changes in that weekend forecast, coming up. remember how the maps were showing a little more slowing than a typical thursday, or than we have seen for the last few months. the toll plaza showing a bigger build, and the metering lights turned on a little early. we will look at the drive in san francisco. the town of atherton is talking about doubling down on property owners to keep its street safe for pedestrians and drivers. last night the council discussed a new ordinance that states property owners are responsible for the maintenance of their trees, shrubs and pathways by the streets. they say it's already state law but they want to make it clear for the homeowners. this summer our investigative unit some of the parts of atherton can be for the pedestrians, and the pedestrian

death rate on camino real is three times higher than neighboring cities. during one public comment, one disagreed with the town's approach to make them liable. >> i find it a little difficult to say if that was not done right, if they did not do it right and all of a sudden that concrete breaks up, i am responsible for that. that doesn't seem right to me. >> the town council will meet again on september 20th. this morning a landmark moment for women's rights groups in mexico. the mexico supreme court struck down all federal abortion laws. in its ruling justices ruled any federal ban on the procedure is unconstitutional, and now health services are required to offer an abortion to whoever request it. while judges in some states must follow the court's decision,

more legal work will have to be done to remove all state penalties. and then mcscott mcgrew is with us. >> as you recall, hunter biden's deal fell apart. it's the same prosecutor now in the hunter biden case as it was then, but that prosecutor has been elevated by the justice department to special counsel and has indicated in court papers he will charge hunter biden with falsely filling out a form when buying a handgun, claiming he was free of illegal drug use when he very much was not. hunter biden has already acknowledged this happened as part of the now collapsed plea deal. biden's lawyer says because hunter biden has continued to follow all the rules set down in the plea deal, the deal still

degrees in antioch. mid-70s for the peninsula. san francisco in the mid-60s. the northbound reaching into the 80s. it will be slightly warmer for the weekend with low 90s, and san francisco will see temperatures in the 60s and 70s. mike, you are seeing more slowing this thursday? >> yeah, this thursday opposed to previous thursdays. we have had a month for most school districts to be in session, so i believe we are sorting out the bigger commute now, and this thursday we see slowing in san josé and the northbound 101 here. there was a crash reported right here, northbound 87 around 280, so there may be push over to slowing past the scene, and we see it on the sensors. and build on north 101, and that's a bigger build for the south bay. slowing through richmond. we are watching that. of course, the bay bridge with a quick backup. look at that. back to you. >> thanks, mike.
