6:01 am
i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check the friday commute if there is one out there. what about the forecast? let's check in with kari. >> not a whole lot happening here. the weather we've seen throughout the week continues today as we take a live look outside at the golden gate bridge, and at times we may see fog drifting by. visibility is clear. let's head to the north bay with a look at novato. 54 degrees and mostly cloudy. by 8:00 to 9:00, it's becoming mostly sunny and sunshine the rest of the day as our temperatures warm up. we'll be nice and mild for this afternoon, reaching 84 in santa rose, and then for oakland expect a high of 77, 82 for san jose, and upper 80s for concord, reaching up to 88 as well in san martin. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike, we see south bay slowing. >> pretty typical area here, northbound 101. then it's clear by the time you get to oakland road. it should be clear in the next 15 minutes as well, resetting
6:02 am
for that 6:40 commute build. holding steady out of the altamont pass. been consistent with the speeds toward north flynn. vasco road shows early slowing, but we're still under 20 minutes all the way to 580 from marsh creek road. no major issues for contra costa county. wait, behind me, we still have slowing, highway 4, the overnight construction crew cleared closer to 6:00 than to 5:00, but still very slow despite the fact that caltrans has cleared from the area. we're looking at a build for richmond. i'll show you the bay bridge coming up. to our continuing coverage of the racist text message scandal rocking antioch's police department. a recent administration by prosecutors may ultimately impact a number of current and closed criminal cases. >> later this morning we may learn just how much it's impacting a current case involving four criminal defendants. ginger conejero saab is live for us this morning. this case really is bringing out emotions on both sides outside
6:03 am
of the courtroom. >> reporter: strong emotions, marcus and laura, from people who are protesting the racist text message scandal that's rocking antioch police department. there was also the concession from the district attorney's office that those text messages in question do violate the racial justice act, and also there were family members of the victim, the man who is accused, and a mother saying this is not about the scandal, but this is about her son, finding justice for her son's death. >> this ain't about no racist [ bleep ]. this is about the murder of my son. arnold marcel hawkins. and if you guys let them out of jail, there's going to be a war. >> we know this may release people on the streets charged with serious crimes, but all the fault of that is on the police' hands for their bias and racism in their policing. if they would have acted appropriately, the charges would stick. >> reporter: those are the two
6:04 am
sides at the heart of this morning's hearing as well. to be clear, it's not the police officers from antioch who are on trial. it's four men who are accused of murder who were the subject of racist text messages from antioch police during their investigation of this case. the big question this morning, will that be enough to reduce charges on this case? >> we want the court to exercise the full extent of its authority to try to restore some integrity to the policing from the antioch police department. >> reporter: now, last month's hearing, judge david goldstein said that subpoenaed officers did not have to testify because of that concession from the district attorney's office. he did, however, say that because this is the remediation phase of the case, he is not able to outright dismiss charges, but there is a possibility that enhancements can be dropped or charges can be reduced, depending on how the case plays out today. the hearing is set for 8:30 this
6:05 am
morning and, judging from the last hearing, also, we can expect that there may be definitely some strong emotions from this morning. guys, back to you. >> no doubt. thank you for all the details, ginger. 6:04 right now. and sending a message to board members. a new coalition from james licht high school attended last night's meeting for san jose's east side union high school district. the parents, students and teachers say they are fed up with the violence there, including the fight captured on video last month. that resulted in the stabbing of two students who have now recovered. the school district has since added more security, but some of those students want to see more than that. >> i think a police officer walking around the campus, but one that's almost like a social worker, that can connect with the students so the students aren't afraid to speak about any issues. >> the district has set up more security around the campus perimeter, even hiring an extra patrol officer. police are still investigating that stabbing incident.
6:06 am
6:05. elsewhere in the south bay, teachers locked in a labor dispute are taking their message to the streets. >> a fair contract is a right. >> that is why we have to fight. >> dozens of gilroy teachers marched to last night's school board meeting. they are pushing for what they call a fair and respectful contract, saying talks are at an impasse. >> we're fighting for effective learn conditions, we're fighting to improve our ability to recruit and retain in gilroy unified fully qualified teachers, and we're fighting for greater access to mental health supports for our students as well. >> some teachers say they're paid 50,000 a year and that's not enough to make a living in the bay area. the district gave us a statement saying, in part, by march of 2023, the district offered a total compensation increase of 11.25%. this is the highest single year increase ever offered by the district. the district added it hopes to reach a new deal soon.

new this morning, california governor gavin newsom opening up about his future in a sit-down exclusive interview with chuck todd from nbc's "meet the press." todd will host his final show ever this sunday, and that interview covers a wide range of topics, including a possible run for president. >> filing deadlines haven't passed. if president biden doesn't run, why shouldn't we consider you? >> i think the vice president is naturally lined up and the filing deadlines are quickly coming to pass and i think we need to move past this notion he's not going to run. president biden is going to run, and i'm looking forward to him getting re-elected. there's been so much wallowing in the last few months, but we're gearing up for the campaign and looking forward to it. >> newsom goes on to say he would fully support vice president kamala harris if she decides to run, and he will not run against her. now, don't forget that interview is part of chuck todd's final "meet the press" telecast airing

sunday at 8:00 in the morning right after "today in the bay." developing at this hour in turkey, rescuers say an american who fell more than 3,000 feet deep inside a cave has recovered enough to launch the process of moving him out. the man named mark dickey suffered gastrointestinal bleeding saturday while exploring the cave, leaving him partially unconscious and unable to eat for three days. authorities say doctors gave dickey iv fluids and 4 liters of blood, but there are factors complicating the rescue effort. >> the quick response of the turkish government to get to the medical supplies that i needed, in my opinion, saved my life. as you can see, i'm up, i'm alert, talking. but i'm not healed on the inside yet, so i'm going to need a lot of help to get out. >> crews say his return to the surface could take up to three or four days because the cave is so deep and narrow.
6:09 am
it's unclear if he will be able to move on his own or have to be carried out on a stretcher. forecasters right now are keeping a close eye on two hurricanes brewing right now. now, hurricane lee is in the atlantic ocean approaching the caribbean over here in this area. now, hurricane jova, that's in the pacific ocean, and it's perched near the baja peninsula. meteorologist kari hall is tracking both of the storms. it looks like it's pretty aggressive right now. what's going on here? >> it's over some very warm water and it did briefly strengthen to a category 5 hurricane. as it moves over the cooler pacific water, it's going to continue to weaken. right now it is a category 2 hurricane moving to the west-northwest at 16 miles per hour. this will continue to weaken and is not expected to maintain that great intensity that we saw earlier with jova. now, this also will remain a tropical storm over the next couple of days and then just fall apart, but that moisture field really spreading out and affecting the waves along the

west coast, with parts of the central coast anywhere from santa cruz all the way down to about santa barbara under a beach hazard statement, with some dangerous waves and rip currents. there will be a high surf advisory for parts of southern california, where those waves may be a lot higher. we're also going to see a surge of some of that moisture coming in as that system weakens, spreading across southern california, but the showers staying well to the south. we're not expecting any impacts here. then looking at hurricane lee, we're going to be talking a lot about this because it is a very powerful category 5 hurricane, wind speeds 165 miles per hour. this moving very close to the caribbean, we're really watching that around hispaniola to move in around wednesday as a category 4. you can see that it does most likely stay out over the open atlantic and then start to curve to the north. but this may cause big waves on parts of the atlantic coast as they remain on heat alert, watching out to see if there will be that all-important turn
6:11 am
as we head into the middle to end of next week. so a lot to keep an eye on. we'll get a look at our forecast in a few minutes. mike, this may impact some of those gas prices. >> we'll watch to see because a lot of times -- i'm not going to blame anybody, but some folks in higher places do look for reasons to raise the price. over here we're looking for a good price, steady at $4.59 for mountain view, the south bay's best. we're talking about the alliance across the street from in and out. let's go to richmond, the gas co for the $4.79 middle price. then we jump up to $4.95, solano county's low at the valero on redwood highway. thank you for joining us on gasbuddy.com and sharing those prices. on the roadway, not as many folks joining us on a friday. moves very smoothly. highway 4, there is a little improvement, so we're looking at just 36 minutes from antioch

disputing, or at least clarifying an allegation that he turned off the internet access for the ukrainian military as they tried to attack russian ships near crimea. the allegation comes in an authorized biography written by walter isaacson, due out next week. isaacson says he followed musk around for more than two years. he's also written a biography of steve jobs. in the book, isaacson says musk ordered his starlink internet system to be turned off as ukrainian drones headed toward the harbor. the drones needed the internet connection apparently to find their way. according to a book excerpt published by cnn, isaacson says musk explained it this way, i think if the ukrainian attacks had succeeded in sinking the russian fleet, it would have been like a mini pearl harbor and led to a major escalation. we did not want to be a part of that. now, musk on social media has said he didn't turn anything
6:19 am
off. the system was off and he ordered it not to be turned on, which is a clarification on all of this. now, starlink was put into ukraine originally as something, musk says, for people to enjoy internet, and he was surprised when it was then used and weaponized, and other companies have had issues with that in the past as well. but, again, this book comes out on tuesday. >> we will be reading it. thanks, scott. a lot of people talking about this, the company behind the viral one-chip challenge on tiktok is now pulling its super spicy chips from store shelves, after the death of a 14-year-old whose family believes the chip actually played a role in that death. the challenge encourages people to eat a chip laced with carolina reaper and scorpion peppers. it's made by a company named paqui. the school districts across the country have banned it amidst reports that teenagers in some cases are being hospitalized

ukiah, and napa a really nice 78 degrees. i want to give you an update on our wildfire activity and how many acres have burned this year. so far we've had 257,000 acres burned across the state. when we compare that to last year, which was a very dry year, we're above that. but then check out where we are normally, the average acreage burned, and it's usually over a million. so we are well below that, but also just slightly above where we were last year, even with the lack of a drought that we are seeing right now. across california, we have been taken out of the brought status, a few years abnormally dry as the drought shifted toward the east. so looking at california now, it has definitely improved, thanks to all of those atmospheric rivers and even tropical activity that we've seen recently. as we go into the weekend, it is going to start to warm up just a few degrees. by sunday we're up to 90 for the inland areas, and temperatures peak on monday, reaching 93,
