weather department al has everything we need to know good morning, everybody. it is september 8th. this is "today." tropical threat. hurricane lee exploding into a massive category five overnight and potentially threatening the east coast plus, severe storms and even more brutal heat set to impact millions more over the weekend we're tracking it all. closing in a new sighting of that escaped inmate on the run in pennsylvania for more than a week police ramping up the manhunt. we'll have the very latest. new concerning the migrant crisis now impacting the return to school officials in new york, the nation's largest school district struggling to find space for 21,000 new students. and the mayor with this ominous warning. >> this issue will destroy new york city. >> just ahead, the new plea for help and the desperate search for a solution racing into action a daring mission getting

it is now an extremely dangerous category 5 storm. >> well, al has his eye on that and all of it. happy friday. >> happy friday to you and good morning to all of you watching unfortunately, this storm isn't as strong as it's predicted to get. we have had really massive intensification. 5:00 a.m. yesterday, 85 miles an hour winds this morning, we are at 165 miles an hour winds. now, normal rapid intensification is 35 miles an hour wind increase in 24 hours look at how much this has increased, and it could get stronger right now lee, category five storm, 630 miles east of the northern islands 165 miles an hour winds. look at how well-defined that eye is moving northwest at 14 miles an hour. by 2:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, 175 mile per hour winds. that's what it's predicted at. by wednesday, 2:00 a.m., it is still well the good news is it is well north of puerto rico and the

dominican republic where is it going after that the european model will be somewhere near bermuda the latest guidance has shifted it slightly to the east. okay so that's the european model the american model pretty much in agreement take a look again. you can see these spaghetti pots, as we call them. if the steering currents we have to worry about we have tropical low pressure over canada. high low pressure out of the atlantic now, if that low pressure is stronger, lee's path will be further away from the east coast. but if this high pressure is more dominant, it moves closer to the coast so we're going to have to just watch this we will not have a good idea about this until at least monday but in the meantime, we do know it is going to cause major problems along the eastern sea board with rough surf and high winds, and that's going to be a problem.

now, as far as the heat is concerned, 54 million people, the heat is starting to contract that's good news basically we've got along the eastern sea board, one more day of high heat indexes into the mid-90s from manchester all the way down to raleigh. cooler conditions through the great lakes. but unfortunately more record highs continuing from texas all the way into the southwest, guys so, again, more heat in the southwest. cooler coming up this weekend in the northeast, and lee is still a big question. >> all right, al thank you so much. we will get more of your forecast coming up in a bit. in the meantime, new developments in a story we have been following all week long, the escaped inmate in pennsylvania police confirming a new sighting of the convicted murderer as hundreds of authorities join the more than week long search george solis has the latest for us this morning. hey, george. >> reporter: good morning. behind me is the heart of the

search operation this is the command post where they have been gathering lately to track the sightings that search now expanding 8 to 10 miles another sighting of a convicted killer in the same area he was seen earlier this week the massive search for danilo cavalcante is entering its ninth day. >> our primary mission is to get this guy in custody. >> reporter: he was spotted yesterday on trail cameras spending an alert that, quote, the subject has been spotted in our area and advising visitors to shelter in place, later came residents were told to stay vigilant. >> he has murdered saying the gardens were closed >> he has already murdered two people in a very brutal manner. >> reporter: he escaped chester county prison last thursday morning. surveillance video shows him crab walking up walls in the prison's exercise yard

he managed to wiggle through barbed wire to get out, an estate route used by another prisoner in may. after that, the prison put new measures including razor wire in place. >> the one thing we didn't take into account was the human account side. >> reporter: 200 law enforcement, lots of agencies out here trying to get this one. they still haven't why do you think that is >> there is a lot of woods there is a lot of places to hide i'm very surprised and kind of disappointed they haven't caught him by now. >> reporter: he was sentenced to life in prison without parole after stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in front of her children her sister says her family is living in constant fear. you're afraid he's hiding? >> yes i'm scared all the time.

>> reporter: hoda, this morning we're expected to get a look inside that command post to see some of the tools the police are using to track down this fugitive they noted it has been brutally hot here, but they say it has not impeded search efforts. >> george solis for us in pennsylvania thank you. the countdown is on to a major strike in the auto industry united auto workers, general motors, ford and chrysler demanding a large pay raise. i mean, three companies at the same time. this is a potentially huge strike how likely will it happen? >> there is three major auto makers at the heart of these debates. two have proposals already the third is expected to come this weekend yesterday gm did offer a counter proposal to the union. you can see how far apart they are on the wage negotiations the uaw is asking for a 46% pay increase over the next three years compounded

gm offered 10% you can see numerically there how far apart they are increased benefits, a shorter workweek from 40 to 32 hours there is still a lot of work to be done. we're only a week out next thursday into friday next week when the strike could happen. >> we see how it is impacting the workers, but for consumers who may be in the market for a car, how will affect them? >> it's been brutal for people trying to buy a car in the last of the covid few years anyway think about the covid disruptions and supply chain issues after the lockdowns were lifted think about what's happening with the uaw, if they were to strike yes, that would be over 100,000 vehicles per week that would not be on the lot for dealers. if you are trying to buy a car, get ahead of this right now. president biden arrived in india for a major summit here at home there are growing questions about his son's legal fate

the special counsel looking into hunter biden is now expected to see an indictment of him within weeks after that controversial plea deal collapsed. chuck, good morning. happy friday let's start right there with hunter biden it seems an indictment is coming we don't know what the contents will be. what is the political fall-out for president biden as he faces re-election. >> well, you know, it is interesting. president biden's biggest problem is not hunter biden. it is his age. all things hunter biden mean more to donald trump i think this ends up being helpful to donald trump. the more there is questions about ethics around the biden name or the biden brand, this has been what trump's goal has been, has just been to muddy the

waters here, create this, hey, everybody is dirty here in washington they claim they're clean concer impacts joe biden, and i they're not telling you that and, so, as much as i know that there is concerns, this impacts -- this impacts joe biden, and i think he has not handled this very well publicly. this matters more to donald trump's ability to continue to essentially make the case that he still can beat biden. and the more muddy he is, the more his voters will believe that. >> i want to talk about sunday on "meet the press." it goes to this issue you just raised, which is biden's age being more of a political liability than anything having to do with his son there is a poll out there week so many voters actually agree on, that they're concerned about the president's age. here you have gavin newsom, california governor waiting in the wings, it seems. you sit down with him and you ask him whether or not he really is planning a presidential run if biden doesn't run let's listen to what he has to

say. >> why shouldn't we consider you a likely candidate >> i think the vice president is naturally lined up and the filing deadlines are quickly coming to pass i think we need to move passed this notion that he's not going to run president biden is going to run, and we're looking forward to getting re-elected i think there has been so much wallowing in the last few months and hammering of this perspective, but we're gearing up to the campaign we're looking forward to it. >> but you hear these calls privacy. what do you tell those donors? >> time to move on let's go. >> how about it, chuck do we take him at his word >> i do take him at his word but you see him. he is gearing up to run for president. it is probably in 2028 and, you know, you can do all the sherman-esque thing, but if something happens, look, the filing deadlines haven't passed. this is, you know, something that you would think that could change before the end of the year and if it somehow did, i think he'd jump in very quickly. but one thing he wanted to make

i do feel very excited, he says, admitting he's nervous as well overall, some 20,000 children are now attending city schools part of what mayor adams called a crisis overwhelming new york. >> we're getting no support on this national crisis. >> and he says more migrants keep arriving, as many as 10,000 many bussed from other states are making their way here, accusing the biden administration of failing to act. >> this issue will destroy new york city. >> reporter: in response, the biden administration saying it has worked closely with new york officials providing more than $140 million in aid this year, adding only congress can reform our broken immigration system and provide additional resources to communities across the country. republicans pouncing on the mayor's criticism.

>> all of them are discovering the burdens of joe biden's open borders and illegal immigration. >> reporter: it is not just new york meanwhile, overnight a u.s. appeals court granting a temporary stay, allowing texas to keep controversial buoys on place in the rio grande. governor greg abbott argued the buoys deter illegal crossings. while critics raise humanitarian concerns saying they could lead to drownings a conflicting issue for many parents. >> reporter: does that concern you? >> no, not really. i'm an immigrant myself. >> i want my tax dollars to go towards my kids, but the softer side of me feels bad for these kids you know it's not their problem >> reporter: ironically, school officials say there is room in the city's classrooms because over 100,000 students left during the covid pandemic and

embering his girlfriend and dumping her body will face a judge for arraignment. authorities in july arrested 42-year-old joesest roberts at the pleasanton apartment he shared with 27-year-old rachel buckner. it followed the discovery of her remains in a bag along the alameda shoreline. neighbors tell nbc bay area the couple had a volatile relationship and at times they heard loud arguments through the walls. investigators say the suspect also assaulted some of the victim's family members. four murder defendants contesting their arrest and criminal charges will take their case back to the courtroom today. much of their case is tied to the same antioch police officers now embroiled in that racist text scandal, and just last month the judge ruled the subpoenaed officers did not have to take the stand because the da's concession of the text messages shared and received by officers violated the racial

thank you. >> reporter: we're hearing from the american scientist for the first time trapped in one of the world's he's as well as can be expected deepest caves telling everyone after a life threatening medical emergency left him trapped nearly a mile underground in turkey. >> i'm alert i'm talking. talking. i will need a lot of i will need a lot of help to get out of here. >> reporter: the 40-year-old veteran cave diver experienced severe gastrointestinal bleeding on saturday while working on a cave expedition two doctors were able to get him desperately needed transfusion services not out of the woods he's not out of the woods yet. the next steps will be incredibly difficult but he's surrounded by help. 150 rescuers from multiple countries are working on the complex mission. >> i want to thank everyone that's down here it is amazing to see how many people have responded on the

surface. >> reporter: it is already bein >> we take care of our own, and called one of the largest cave rescues ever attempted. >> we take care of our own, and it's really special to be taken care of. >> reporter: but dickey will need all the help he can get the challenge is it's 4,000 feet, a labyrinth of tight passages, which a fellow cave diver says it makes the cave one of the toughest to traverse. >> it is at the top of the game of difficult cave systems. >> reporter: so even if he's feeling better, the real challenge for him and his rescuers is yet to come. a lot of the time line depends on whether or not he will be able to walk himself out of that cave if he needs to be carried out on a stretcher, that could make the whole operation a lot more difficult and a lot more dangerous. >> matt bradley for us there matt, thank you. coming up, new tributes to

the east coast will start feeling its impacts soon too meanwhile, there are finally some signs of relief from that record heat. it made the week so miserable in much of the country, even disrupting the start of school in some places al has a lot on his map this morning. >> we sure do. 630 miles east of the northern islands, winds moving northwest at 14. tomorrow morning it is a category five with 175 miles an hour winds weakens a little bit as we get into early next week they will probably feel some of its effects. the european model, you can see, is all over the map literally from long island all the way to nova scotia. then we're looking at the american model, which keeps things further to the east however, it will depend on the steering currents. we have a big area of low pressure over canada high pressure over the atlantic. if the low gets stronger next week, it will steer lee's path further away from the east coast. if the high dominates, that will keep it closer to the east coast we will have to continue to watch.
