hundreds killed after a powerful earthquake hit morocco. >> now the search for survivors is on. it's september 9th. this is "today." >> devastation and despair. a horrific scene overnight after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck morocco. more than 800 dead. that number expected to rise. the damage immense. buildings crumbling and residents running in the streets for safety. we're live with the latest. monster storm. hurricane lee is a category three storm churning in the atlantic and it is set to impact the east coast beginning this weekend. lee's exact path unclear this morning. angie's watching its every move. denied. a federal judge late friday shoots down former chief of staff mark meadows bid to move his georgia election interference case to federal court. this morning, why this could be a major blow for meadows, the former president and the other co-defendants. and where is he?

matt, what more can you tell us this morning? >> reporter: good morning, peter. this earthquake struck last night after 11:00 p.m. in the high atlas mountains. the epicenter was 50 miles from merrikesh. the numbers have been rising all morning and they will continue to rise as the week continues. we heard from the u.s. geological survey. this reached a 6.81 on the richter scale. according to the usgs, the population doesn't live in adequate housing to stave off the tremors. that is the reason we are likely to see the numbers increasing. the local authorities and military are trying their best

to dig survivors out from underneath the rubble and local health officials said they have been begging the public to donate blood to help survivors. governments of the u.s. and france and world health organization and red cross have all said they will provide assistance if needed. guys. >> matt bradley with the latest in morocco. thank you. now to the hurricane churning in the atlantic ocean. hurricane lee is currently a category three, but it could strengthen again in the next day or two and impact folks here in the u.s. as early as tomorrow. our meteorologist angie lassman is tracking it all. angie, when will this come to our shore? >> it depends what we are talking about with the impact. we are looking at indirect impact to the east coast. high surf and rip current.

we have a fish storm with margot. we have winds down to 115 miles an hour. it was a cat 5 yesterday. we are expecting weakening with the system before it gets its strength back up. the good news for the leeward island and hispanola with the high surf and rip current risk. we are expecting it to be a category 4 storm and then next week, taking a turn to the north. models are in good agreement to the turn to the north. impacts to bermuda and the east coast are not ruled out. as of right now, the american model with the spaghetti plots to show us what will happen. the european model agrees with that. taking the northerly turn. when it takes the turn is the big question, guys, it has a low

pressure and high pressure that are playing tug-of-war. >> angie, thank you for that. we will check back in later. president biden is overseas with the g20 with the rising tensions in china and the war in ukraine on the agenda. we have kelly o'donell traveling with the president this morning in india. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. this is the world stage for president biden in new delhi. he is trying to strengthen ties with india with narendra modi. also, the chinese president xi jinping and vladimir putin have skipped this gathering. that creates a big opening for those absences so the u.s. and other larger economies here can show support for the developing world with the major announcement of the new railway

and seaport project to connect india with saudi arabia, middle east and europe. also missing here is ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy who is invited to address the summits. the u.s. told us they think he is the best person to make the case. he was not invited to do that here. a big pressure point has been whether these leaders would agree on a joint statement which includes support for ukraine. russia is a member of the g20. prime minister modi said they did reach agreement which is a significant breakthrough for the u.s. this will go on from the meeting here to president biden traveling tomorrow to hanoi where he is expected to work to announce there will be a new closer partnership with vietnam. that is another counterweight to china and a sign of how much has changed in the generations since the vietnam war. peter and laura. >> kelly traveling with the president. thank you. now to the major setback for

former trump chief of staff mark meadows. he hoped to move his case to federal court, but the judge denied the request on friday. this could have an implication for meadows and his former boss. wehave julie tsirkin with more. >> reporter: good morning. this could not impact mark meadows' case, but the former president's case moving forward. mark meadows dealt a major blow in the georgia election interference case. u.s. district judge steve jones rejected the results which were not part of the work as a government official. jones writing meadows needs to prove he was acting as a white house employee and not on the trump campaign falls short.

meadows lawyers hope to have the case heard in federal court. the judge's decision for now is not impacting other defendants who filed similar actions. including former president donald trump who along with his 18-co-defendants pled not guilty. he may seek removal of his prosecution with the final decision to be made by the end of the month. in the meantime, mr. trump is firing back after the release of the special grand jury regard on friday with the panel showing prosecutors filing charges against 39 people in the georgia election interference case. trump writing the fulton county district attorney, quote, wanted to indict anything who happened to be breathing at the time. among those named, three senators. including lindsey graham who made calls to investigate claims of voter fraud in november of 2020. >> why is a senator from south carolina calling the secretary

of state in georgia? >> because the future of the country hangs in the balance. >> reporter: he was not ultimately charged. overnight, lawyers for mark meadows appealing the decision to keep the case in fulton county and asking to halt the proceedings. laura and peter. >> julie, thank you. >> you are the senior legal correspondent here. the question folks are asking is what impact this will have on the case not just for mark meadows, but mr. trump and the co-defendants going forward. >> clearly, meadows hoped to get in federal court for a favorable forum. the judge did not buy that. the thing to see is in the decision, the judge had language which would apply to his former boss mr. trump. it has been unclear whether or not trump would get the case kicked to federal court. i think he would have a hard time with the judge's decision. the reason the georgia case is

different, peter, is because if it stays in state court, it is televised and it is the only one out of the four cases he is be . meadows is go to the supreme court if he wishes. >> early win for the prosecutors and it means the americans will watch this. let's get back to the other weekend job. we turn to president trump and his rival ron desantis in the state of iowa today. mr. trump currently has a huge lead in the polls there, but nbc news has learned his allies have concerns about his campaign operations in iowa that could make him vulnerable. nbc dasha burns broke that story. >> mr. trump hasn't spent a lot of time campaigning in iowa. the former president did not win the first in the nation caucus in 2016. his gop opponents see a repeat performance as a way to slow

momentum and get their names in the conversation. interviews with a dozen sources paint a picture of the lagging operation in the hawkeye state with the inexperienced staff and getting the grassroots organizing off the ground. mr. trump's family members are concerned. within source described the phone call with donald trump jr. that he was worried about the lack of experience on the campaign's iowa team. he said multiple times they need an adult in the room and they were giving ron desantis too many opportunities there. trump junior said this is 100% fake news in likely the last breath from the dying ron desantis campaign. >> what do you hear from the desantis side? >> trump and desantis are in inverse positions in iowa. trump has the lead in the polls,

but he is behind in organizing. desantis is behind in the polls, but ahead in organization. the desantis team has resources on the ground in iowa. they cut back operations elsewhere to focus more intensely on the hawkeye state. this could be the best shot of stopping mr. trump from steamrolling from the nomination process. >> dasha burns, thank you so much. good to see you. authorities in pennsylvania still have not found the escaped prisoner accused of murder who vanished a week and a half ago. george solis is still following the story. george, do they have a better sense of where he may be? >> reporter: good morning, peter. authorities believe he is within an eight-mile perimeter as they expand the search. they have 400 officers here in

the hunt for the fugitive which began ten days ago. this morning, the convicted killer is still on the run. the prison officer on duty at the time of the escape, has been fired. a spokesperson said the officer, whose name has not been released was an 18-year veteran. at issue, the officer had a cell phone in the tower. violation of the prison policy. earlier this week, the details show he failed to observe the escape from the prison which went undetected for nearly an hour. >> my best estimate is he is within that perimeter. >> reporter: the area for the search shifting again after two sightings. one wednesday night and one thursday at noon. both around longwood gardens. >> many operations in that place right now. >> reporter: this map inside the command center showing the eight

square miles where they are tracking the 5-foot inmate who is believed to be hiding in the area. the same area where he was captured on a trail camera earlier this week. this is similar to where he was in brazil after a murder. after that crime, he hid out in the jungle before fleeing to the u.s. >> after that crime down there, he did something similar to this in the jungle down there. it is not surprising to me he is able to last out there for a little while. >> reporter: among the agencies, attempting to flush him out in the open. the u.s. marshals are confident. >> we are playing a game of tactical hide-and-seek. we are looking for a dangerous individual. >> reporter: again, peter, as you see, officers are starting to regroup as the hunt continues for yet another day. the reward for information that leads to the capture was at $10,000 and now doubled to

$20,000. peter. >> george on the ground in pennsylvania. thank you. angie, let's get a check of the rest of the country's forecast. >> of course. anything for you. we have some storms that we'll have to contend with along the east coast. we have have the pesky front that is hanging around. it did offer relief with the heat for us in places like the northeast and midwest. it will leave unsettled conditions in washington, d.c. and new york with scattered showers and thunderstorms through the day today. that will go down to the southeast. we have thunderstorms happening across texas and the northern plains. those are the spots we will watch for rain. how about the nice conditions across the mid section of the country? great temperatures. 75 for chicago and detroit in the 70s as well. a nice day for folks there. hot, hot, hot across the south. folks in texas and points east of that are not getting a break from any of that ridiculously uncomfortable conditions they he have seen lasting for days and

transit leaders say they're looking to improve the rider experience for passengers by shortening wait times. s the agency plans to remove cars from trains that see fewer riders, which will make them move faster. >> i think one of bart's assets is the new ideas. if they're working, they'll keep them and if they don't, they won't. >> bart will begin using its new fleet of cars. these changes go into effect monday, september 11th. now to oakland, where a rally will be taking place later this morning. the group neighbors together oakland are hosting a community rally over safety. residents are invited to join alameda county and city and state leaders to tackle issues important to them.

the biden administration asked the supreme court on friday to end a legal challenge that threatens widespread access to a commonly used abortion pill over the approval of mifepristone. this marks the first time the court has second guessed the quote expert judgment of the food and drug administration in approving the medication. if the supreme court refuses the case, the decision by the l a tennessee man known as the zip-tie guy was sentenced to five years in prison for the participation in the january 6th riot he and his mother were seen in pictures during the attacks with zip ties lisa marie was sentenced to 30 months in prison they were found guilty in d.c. court of conspiracy. more than 1,100 people have been charged with crimes in

angie is back with the forecast. let's talk about the u.s. open a lot of people, especially the players have been waiting for the heat to break. we are getting nicer conditions in the 80s we will be a little unsettled for folks heading out there or anywhere up and down the east coast. we will see showers and thunderstorms. it doesn't look like a great chance for severe weather. make gusty winds or hail the good news is tornado risk is very low we will see a couple of spots across the south and central plains where we could see unsettled weather for saturday here is the front that has been hanging around and offered up relief and brought us down from the 90s we saw from the widespread areas it leaves us with heavy rainfall across the region not just today, but tomorrow. sunday is unsettled in new england. we could see gusty winds and impressive rainfall rates. we need it in spots when it

routine, start with five minutes and move to ten minutes. move the bedtime earlier in the next few days. keep the wake time the same. >> we would put them in bed at 6:00 p.m. if we could. >> a lot of people are letting kids sleep in on the weekends. younger kids should get up at the same time and get light at the morning. >> there are all sorts of guidance of how much sleep you need. i was negotiating this with my 10-year-old a week ago. what is the guide for sleep? >> there is not a set number for someone. you are an eight-hour person. there is a range. the national sleep foundation has a wonderful slide with a range. for kids, it could be 9 to 11 hours. it depends on the age. it really does vary. adults? 8 to 10 hours. 7 to 9 hours for most adults.

and we start with the powerful earthquake that struck morocco overnight. more than 800 people killed and hundreds of others injured. rescue workers are right now searching through the rub for -- rubble for survivors. people are runs out to the streets in marrakesh. so many buildings were damaged and a mosque that collapsed there. electricity is said to be out for many people and roads cut off. the magnitude 6.8 quake is the hardest to hit morocco in 120 years. and back in the u.s., the former chief of staff mark meadows, has been dealt a serious blow in the federal case. the federal judge denied the request to move the case to federal court. he said the pressure of the georgia officials was not part of the work as a federal

official. lawyers for meadows hoped to move the case to federal court to get the charges dismissed arguing he was immune from prosecution. this could impact other defendants in the case, namely his former boss trump. if this stays in state court, the case will be televised in georgia. we turn to the latest on covid with the uptick in cases the past several weeks. the fda poised to approve the latest booster in a matter of days. who should get the booster? we bring in the medical contributor dr. natalie azar. a lot of people are having this conversation. i cannot tell you how many people got covid again. trusting the booster gets approved, who should get this? is it good for kids? how about those not in high risk groups? >> a lot to go over this morning. we were expecting the fda to sign off on it yesterday.

the cdc is meeting on tuesday to make more formal recommendations about which groups will prioritize for this vaccine. i can tell you it is very likely going to include folks who are 65 and older and probably 75 and older and individuals immune compromised and high morbidity risk and pregnant women. as far as the general population goes, we can get into that in a little bit. to remind everybody, the vaccine is composed of the xvb strain. this was the prominent one in the spring and summer. we have different various ye va. we have good news from pfizer and moderna that this will cover the strains. >> should you go out and get it right now? we all have had so many shots at this point. how do you measure the timing? >> it is always a gamble to say

when should i get it. always with the flu shot, too. it takes up to two weeks to develop those antibodies that protect against illness. the thing is everyone comes in at a different spot. many people got the booster last year. 17% got the updated booster last year. many of us, got the initial series and we are still protected against severe disease. that protection affords you protection for the vaccine. >> is this the new normal? one covid shot a year just like the flu shot? >> from the public health perspective and communication perspective from the cdc, they want to streamline it so people have the idea of it is time for the flu shot. let's get the covid shot every year at the same time. it makes things easier. from the biological perspective, that is not necessarily the most
