businesses to close. how long until crews say they will have that fixed. >> and a packed public meeting spills out on the sidewalk. and the action to community is demanding tonight. good evening. we are getting new details tonight about that massive 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook morocco. the death toll climbed to 2,000. >> the quake was centered in the atlas mountains but there is widespread damage up to 40 miles away. tonight rescue crews are racing to find more survivors stuck in the rubble. security footage showing the rumbling, the shaking and the screaming as a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck morocco. they are now struggling to reach survivors thought to be buried beneath the rubble. it is the most powerful tremor

to hit morocco in more than 100 years. >> suddenly we saw dishes and other things fixed to the wall. we were unable to sit or stand. then we fled outside. >> morocco military reporting 2,000 killed, another 2,000 injured. numbers have been climbing all day. >> we ran outside, but a wall fell on my head says this man. >> adam parsons is on the ground in morocco. >> there is still real fear about what could happen. here is a good example. this restaurant behind me was badly damaged by the earthquake on friday night, but it only actually collapsed hours and hours later. >> the quake struck in the high atlas mountains shortly before midnight. the security camera shows people fleeing caves in panic and barely escaping falling debris.

a water main break is causing headaches for local businesses. thousands of gallons of water flooded sections of the boulevard at cyprus avenue. it is right there at the border. it started at 11:00 this morning. the force of the water is so strong, it uprooted asphalt. one nearby restaurant, a slice of new york pizza was forced to close for the day. >> thousands of dollars. saturday is one of our busier nights. college football starts today. i don't know if we will be open tomorrow. >> the manager says there was so much water outside his store, it looked like a swamp. it did. the city of santa clara working to repair the break. crews say it could be hours before that is turned back on. >> we know what closed one of the airport terminals for an hour tonight. a tsa employee discovered a

suspicious package. around 4:00 a.m., terminal two was shut down as a bomb tech examined that box. nothing was found and the terminal reopened a year later. >> safety and crime continues to be the focus for many people living in oakland today. dozens of people attended a community and safety meeting. this was a line to get into this meeting. many people told us they wanted to hear from leaders to address what's being done. >> discussion came after a man was shot and killed overnight not far from martin luther king elementary. so far no arrests in that case. christie smith reports from oakland. at oakland's guinness worship center, people waited outside a community safety meeting that filled up fast. >> we want to hear about the safety plan. what is the safety plan? there are shootings every night. >> i have been turned away from this meeting because, according

to them, they are at capacity. this business owner came because she's frustrated with crime. >> customers are not even coming. they're not able to feel comfortable parking their cars because if they park for five minutes their stuff will get stolen from their car. >> this was the line outside before the doors opened. those who made it outside listened to a meeting that featured speakers including district attorney pamela price and the mayor thao. >> traffic enforcement and also funded six new police academies over the next two years. >> she outlined the efforts of her force, deploying chp for traffic violations and sideshows, a camera system, as well as intervention and prevention. >> we have to go back to one community, one oakland. that is the only way to move forward together. so what this means is that we have to not only work towards solving the crimes and getting

cal poly probably wished they never did start the game because they lost 7-3. let's talk about that crazy weather. >> so there wasn't any rain on the field. there was thunderstorms to the watch. unusual weather brought on by tropical air from a hurricane well off the coast of baja, california. right now relatively quiet conditions. look at how things looked earlier this morning. right here, 1:00 that's when they delayed the game. you saw the lightening strikes southeast of the stadium. but things are trending calmer, despite the fact that surge in tropical air continues. well away from california. look at how that moisture is heading towards the bay area. the focus tomorrow will be across central and southern california. you can see that in the future cast. so tomorrow decreasing chances of thunderstorms closer to the bay area and a bit of a warmup

folding chair, tried to hit an officer with a metal pole and he was shot in the leg. no word of how the suspect is doing. a break-in at a peninsula home, and the homeowners were inside when it wa happening. police say it happened around 8:30 thursday night at a home off aurnt avenue. two people smashed the office of a rear door to get inside. that triggered an alarm. woke up the 70-year-old woman who lives there. she yelled at them and they ran out the front door. this is the third time burglaries have broken into the home in two years. none of the cases have been solved. >> president biden is in india meeting with world leaders. during the event in new delhi today, leaders announced infrastructure and investment projects. they include an economic corridor that will include india, the northeast and europe. also a solar energy site in india. president biden spoke about the partnership and affected

garvin thomas hosting his seventh annual bay area proud blood drive. he is there every year. doctors say the need is high because there aren't any school drives, which are a big source of donations. more than 100 people stepped up to donate. that includes 20 first-time donors. >> i wanted to give because it is an important thing for all of us to do. it is something we can do that's free for us, but it really makes an incredible impact. >> today's drive collected enough blood to help more than 200 patients. 60% of stanford blood center donations come from drives like this right here. if you miss today's drive, you can donate at your local red cross or any blood donation centers. >> okay. it is almost flu season and one health care season decided to get ahead of it.

kaiser held a flu clinic to give employees a boost before flu season which starts in october. the vaccine takes two weeks to get in effect. doctors recommend you get it as soon as possible. >> it is god to get a flu vaccine before the season starts. we have started seeing some flu, the disease already. but the real season kicks off at the end of september, beginning of october. so you want to get it early so you are ready. >> starting monday, members will be able to get their flu shots at the vaccine tent. >> if you were in the bay area three years ago today, who could forget, rob is shaking his head, it felt like we were on mars on that day. video from september 9th, 2020, that day the skies turned a -- look at that, martian orange. >> not a new color, too.

the troubled luxury high rise is not sinking any further. >> and the reality is the millennium tower could be tilting this way for forever. we have the exclusive story. >> new data shows the millennium tower is now supported on two sides and has finally stopped sinking and tilting. that's a major accomplishment says one international recognized engineer. >> i would say the building is stalled. and from the designer's viewpoint, that was their objective. >> this expert says there is also bad news. >> their objective of correcting the tilt to a significant extent, i fear that expectation has not been met. >> millennium engineering relying on this computer model predicted 4 inches of tilt reversal occurring continuously. that's the process of

transferring some 18 million pounds of the tower's weight on to the new support piles. but the latest monitoring data suggests the early progress has all but stopped. after reversing three-quarters of an inch of tilt in nine days, you can see weeks have gone by with little or no progress since the end of jacking. tilt recovery peaked right when jacking was done. >> unless you were magically able to jack the building up further, we are still left with a significant tilt of the building. >> that could leave the tower permanently tilting 29 inches as measured at the northwest corner of the roof. while millennium officials acknowledge there has not been as much tilting as the model predicting, they told us given the implications, they see the match between the measured behave beyond an the analysis as excellent. the city doesn't appear

week and a half. state police have con firmed two sights. police have cut the area to four square miles focussing on the garden's property. the challenge is more difficult because he is five feet tall, only weighs 120 pounds. they believe he's moving around in a densely wooded area, living off fruits and vegetables living in gardens. >> he's on borrowed time. now that they're squeezing in on him, he has less of a chance to break into homes and steal food and things he needs. a date is set for the reopening of west maui one month after the island suffered the deadliest wild fire in a century. all traveling restrictions will end and west maui will open to visitors on october 8th in part to get the economy up and

downing. the governor also said displaced residents can return to their properties in three to four months after the epa removes all hazardous materials. at least 115 people died in the fires and 66 are still listed as missing. monday marks 22 years since 9/11. hosted a memorial stair climb in commemoration. this was in greensboro. the city honored the nearly 3,000 people that died on september 11th. participants climbed flights of stairs 11 times. that represented 73 flights of stairs, equivalent to the highest floor the fire department reached on 9/11. in the bay area, there will be a remembrance event tomorrow. the veterans memorial and support foundation will be celebrating the lives of 9/11 survivors and victims. both were from the bay area and

there are new concerns about e bikes. more people across the country are riding them. but they're also causing more accidents. it is becoming so bad that some areas are declaring emergencies. >> e-bikes are zooming into cities across the country. zipping through traffic and barrelling by at parks and beaches. across the globe, sales are skyrockets. nearly four billion e bikes sold word wide. that could rise to 10 million dollar a year. concerns about their safety,

especially for young people. >> local leaders declared a local emergency. >> this summer the city of insin knee das issuing an emergency declaration of two teens on e bikes were involved in separate accidents. >> he would bring joy into every single room. >> in one of those crashes, claire's son brody. back in june the 15-year-old was riding an e bike and was wearing a helmet when he was in a collision with a van and died. >> it is a nightmare. you can't even believe you can live through it. >> reporter: but the concern is not only for people riding these e bikes but the potential risk they could also pose for people in their path. >> oh! nice hit. >> reporter: erica davis says her six-year-old son was hit by an 11-year-old rider at a beach last year. >> i saw my son and then the e

biker hit him to the ground and then the bike on top of him. >> her son survived. >> we have seen some e bike injuries in patients as young as age four. >> pediatric trauma surgeon at rady children's hospital says this is just the tip of the iceberg. >> talk to us about the types of injuries you see from these e bikes. >> the most common injuries we see are concussions. we're seeing fractures. i think it will get worse. >> some san diego area schools offer e bike classes so students can learn how to stay safe on the road. but it is complicated. the e bike laws differ from state to state, including age requirements for riding one. it can be confusing for parents since not all e bikes are the same. some only go up to around 20 miles per hour, while others almost 30 miles an hour. moms like claire now pushing for the policies to keep up with the technology. >> i don't think the streets and

and in terms of our temperatures today, livermore and san jose above average. 85 in san jose. 67 degrees. 97 in concord. then temperatures rebound on monday. here is a tropical connection to our weather. even though the storm weather is well to the south, it will stay there and continue to weaken. but it is shedding away the clouds to the bay area. that's enough fuel to increase in stability. as that moisture increases, we're still seeing the showers. not as intense as we head earlier this morning. but over the bay area, out to sierra and central california today, 3,000 lightening spark fires around the area and also one in the santa cruz mountains has been handled for now. it's pretty lucky we didn't have strong winds. tomorrow notice the focus of the

moisture, central california down into southern california. that and a few more advisories for thunderstorms possible there. if your travel plans include that area tomorrow, watch out for that. around here, things should start to calm down a bit. notice the futurecast around morgan hill. it doesn't look like we will see the showers. they should be closer to fresno tomorrow. our temperature trend tomorrow, 50s to start the day. highs eventually reaching 80s inland. it is monday where we jump up to the low 90s around fairfield. then we cool down again on tuesday. if you are keeping track, temperatures go back up again on wednesday. then we drop down and stay there for the second half of the week. back and forth for the temperatures. warmest day of the week coming up on monday. then we level off with the temperatures and we lose some of the tropical air after tomorrow. back to more typical forecasts as we get closer to the start of fall.
