7:00 am
good morning. it is sunday, september 10th, 7:00, and a live look outside. good morning. walnut creek, a little bit of cotton candy cloud cover there, ahead of what should be another lovely weekend day.
7:01 am
thank you so much for starting your sunday morning with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins with us a quick look at our microclimate forecast. yesterday, well, yesterday was kind of strange, right? a lightning delay in san jose, our co-workers saw some rain, but it was lovely where i was. [ laughter ] >> yeah, it was mainly focused down to the south bay as we forecasted. and more of that activity through the central coast this morning and today, a bit of a different story, although we are starting out with dense fog blanketing the bay bridge. be careful with changes in visibility as you head out the door. san jose waking up to a bit chillier conditions and some cloud cover in the south bay. that visibility is a concern right now, mainly forming in the north bay. navoto, santa rosa, less than half a mile of visibility. so be careful with changing conditions. less of the cloud cover as we go into the middle of the day. along the water, low to upper 80s for the inland valleys.
7:02 am
we'll hang onto summer just a little bit longer. >> cinthia, thanks. this morning, we are learning more about that destructive earthquake that's left parts of morocco in ruins. as we reported yesterday morning, that deadly 6.8 magnitude quake hit the north african country late friday night, and the death toll has grown from yesterday's estimate. today, more than 2,000 people are reported dead. just as many are injured. of those 2,000 injured, more than half are in critical condition. surveillance cameras outside a restaurant captured the moment the quake hit. wow! it has become the deadliest earthquake that morocco has suffered in more than 100 years. survivors are beginning to speak out, pleading for help. >> this is one of the poorest areas in the city, and those people need help like food, water, blankets, however you can help. >> search and rescue teams are
7:03 am
working to find any survivors. morocco has declared three days of national mourning. the national flag will be flown at half staff throughout the country. and the effects of that massive quake are being felt here in the bay area. some moroccans we spoke with locally were fortunately able to reach their loved ones, and ensure their safety. alyssa gourd reports on what they say you can do to help. >> reporter: during saturday's brunch service at san francisco restaurant here, the owner says his phone was inundated with people wondering if his family in morocco was impacted by the recent earthquake. >> after many attempts, i was able to reach them and apparently some of the mobile service towers were down because of the earthquake. >> reporter: he grew up in morocco and is grateful his family and friends are okay, but we're only just starting to grasp the devastation caused by the quake. >> a lot of people are still in
7:04 am
a lot of trouble. a lot of people are unaccounted for. and i can promise you that from what i -- from what i gathered from talking to people in morocco on the ground, everybody knows somebody who is missing. >> reporter: staff at several other moroccan restaurants in san francisco tell us they have been on the phone with relatives all day, hearing about the devastation. they're also concerned that the numbers of people dead or missing will continue to rise. >> prayers are nice. but at this point, people need a lot more than prayers. >> reporter: he says it could be helpful for those who are able to go to morocco to assist in the search and rescue efforts. but even if that's not possible, he says monetary support will be important, too. he's talking with chefs from across the country about how to do just that. >> we're going to do a lot of events in the next, you know, coming weeks to help raise money for morocco.
7:05 am
>> reporter: alyssa gourd, "today in the bay." >> we're continuing to follow this story closely as the search and rescue efforts continue. we're posting updates on our website. you can go to nbcbayarea.com and click on morocco earthquake at the top of our home page. back here locally, we're getting more information about a brawl inside the san francisco center shopping mall, formally known as westfield. this happened just before 6:00 p.m. yesterday. a security guard told our nbc bay area crew that more than a dozen teenagers started attacking someone. nothing was stolen, but when the fight broke out, there were concerns that the teens had knives. police say when officers responded, they found only one teen who had hit his head on something. they turned that boy over to a parent. no word on whether arrests were made. crime and public safety continue to be hot button issues for people living in oakland.
7:06 am
at yesterday's public safety meeting at oakland's genesis worship center, the line of people trying to get in was out the door and down the block. only about 70 people were able to get into the actual town hall. there was a live stream for everyone else. oaklanders told us they want to hear specific steps leaders are taking to curb crime and improve safety. >> we want to hear about the safety plan, what is the safety plan? there are shootings every night. >> it's never, ever, ever been this bad. >> neighbors and business owners shared their frustrations and concerns about everything, from thefts and break-ins, to shootings. as you can see here, speakers included the district attorney and the mayor of oakland. >> i know i cannot ignore one community or one person in the system in favor of another in the system, in favor of another
7:07 am
person. >> we have to get back to the community in oakland. [ inaudible ] so we have to not only work for solving the crimes and getting justice, but we also have to do the work to prevent the harm of this happening. >> officers from opd and the alameda county sheriff's office -- also there. the group held a sort of counterrally, featuring a former city council member. we are hearing more from the family of a man shot to death on friday in oakland. police tell us it happened just before 10:00 at 8th and filburt street. paramedics rushed the man to the hospital where he later died. we spoke with his father. he says his son was trying to turn his life around. >> he was working.
7:08 am
he was working for san francisco and then he got another job. he was just saying, i like that and it was going to stick with that. you know, this just -- there's so resources for these kids. >> no word yet on any shooter description or any arrest. now to the south bay where this water main break sent thousands of gallons of water flowing down stevening creek boulevard yesterday afternoon. the mess forced several nearby businesses to shut down for the day. it all started just after 11:00 yesterday morning, the force of the water so strong it actually uprooted some asphalt and sections of the road. because the water had to be shut off to make repairs, a slice of pizza was forced to close. >> thousands of dollars. college football starts today. i don't know if we'll even be
7:09 am
open tomorrow. >> the manager there tells us there was so much water outside his store, it looked like a swamp. the city of santa clara is working to repair the break. crews say it could be long before the water is turned back on. all right. we told you about this yesterday. prepare for traffic trouble in mountain view if you are headed out this morning. all lanes of south bound 101 at moffett boulevard are closed. caltrans says it's so crews can make repairs at the overcross passing. follow that detour in green on your screen. you will be gued. we will keep you posted. the freeway is set to reopen in two hours at 9:00. this morning, pride is taking over the streets of oakland. the annual pride parade returns. the event also will feature music, food, and other events. and nbc bay area will have a
7:10 am
float in the parade. if you go, look out for some of our familiar faces. the parade starts at 11:00 this morning, running down broadway from 14th to 21st streets, ending with a big celebration in uptown. as we told you yesterday, the need for blood donations is great, and you helped make up for some of the shortfall of donations this summer. california health leaders say every two seconds, someone in the u.s. needs donated blood. so here at nbc bay area, we're doing our part annually, as we told you yesterday, we partnered with the stanford blood bank to host the 7th annual bay area proud blood drive. >> i do this every four, five months, i come out, it's a healthy thing to do and a good thing for a good cause. that's why i come out. >> we are so grateful for people like him. more than 100 people, in fact, stepped up to donate, including
7:11 am
20 first-time donors. yesterday's drive collected enough blood to help more than 200 patients. 50% of stanford blood donations come from drives like this. if you weren't able to participate and you want to, you can always donate at your local red cross or any number of blood donation centers. we thank everyone. it's 7:10. much more ahead on "today in the day." coming up, we go live to washington, d.c. for an inside look at chuck todd's last episodes the moderat aor

7:13 am
welcome back. this morning, nbc news is marking the end of an era, after nine years, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd is hosting his final episode as moderator of "meet the press." scott mcgrew spoke with chuck this morning. >> sunday marks the last "meet
7:14 am
the press" with chuck todd at the helm. chuck joins me from washington. chuck, "meet the press" is nbc's longest running program. fidel castro has been on "meet the press." you hosted for almost ten years. what sticks out for you? >> well, look, i often joke when you're introduced as the moderator of the longest running television show in history, the goal is not to be the last moderator, so i achieved that goal. you want to pass the baton. so i want to get that out of the way. it is now kristen welker's burden to make sure she's not the last moderator of the longest running show in the history of television on the planet. the nine years that i was the kus tocustodian of this chair, f them are the most tumultuous years i've covered in politics.
7:15 am
not since the '50s have we been this polarized and uncertain in our direction and maybe not since the 1850s. so it is one of those -- and i think it's one of the reasons why i was ready to take a breath and take a pause. there's only so many rides on this roller coaster anybody can handle, and anybody should do on that front. but i would way for me what is certainly stood out, it's sort of trying to -- trying to hold onto this idea that there are some of us that are dispassionate in the press, dispassionate about left versus right. it's more about covering politics as it is. the biggest change is how many people don't want to do that anymore. >> you talked with governor newsom for a one on one. what did you take away from that? >> look, he's a very -- i moderated his first debate when
7:16 am
he ran for governor. i've been covering for 25 years, i've known for him for a quarter of a century. what stood out, there is a comfort and thick skin that he has, that he -- that he has acquired over the years. he's very confident and comfortable in his station, and he's also been humbled. look, we got into everything. it's a very wide ranging interview. any question you want asked, i promise i got to it. but if you are asking me the -- sort of the bigger takeaway i had, this is a very confident individual, and i think he thinks -- he feels very fearless right now. i'm pretty convinced, the next office he runs for is president. it's just probably not going to be this calendar year. >> one more question, nancy pelosi just announced she's running for re-election. any thoughts on that? >> it surprised me. you know, it's not -- it's a bit unusual for a former speaker to
7:17 am
stay longer than another term or finishing a term. it's mildly surprising. we've seen it a couple of times in the senate where majority leader has gone on to another term. when you're driving, it is hard to let go of the wheel and let somebody else drive. my youngest son is just starting to drive. so i'm surprised she still wants to -- i know she's going to want to take the wheel, right? when you have been a leader as long as her. so i think it's very hard to give up something. it's sometimes hard to let go and it's clear she believes she still has the energy. she still has the ability to do it. so she's not going to let go. you know, i understand that some people are like, hey, you know, a generation is supposed to leave the stage at some point, right? that's to make room for the next
7:18 am
generation of leaders. i imagine this will be received with a mixed bag. >> chuck, i wish you the best of luck, both with letting go of the steering wheel and being a bad, tinto avoid the mailboxes. chuck, thanks again. join chuck todd coming up at 8:00. and every sunday morning after that with the new host, kristen welker, right here on nbc bay area. kira? >> thank you, scott. by the way, chuck will remain at nbc news as chief political analyst. he also will be focusing on long-form journalism. coming up in 30 minutes, we'll talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a work at the house of representatives has before them to avoid a government shutdown. and now we have some events to tell you about in this morning's "weekend calendar." >> good morning, kira. you may know the crucible in west oakland is a place to make
7:19 am
with 18 departments, welding, black smithing, glass working and ceramics. but today instead of making or teaching, they'll be fixing. it's their quarterly fix-a-thon. they'll do tuneups for the first 30 folks who bring their bikes in. and then to a crucible in the south bay. you get your goblet at the mountain view art and wine festival. this is the 51st annual event. if the experience lives up to the expectation, this year's festival will be a festival like no other festival like in other. or you can head up to san francisco. this weekend marks the mid point of flower piano 2023 in san francisco's botanical guarden, where 12 pianos are hidden throughout the park right here. where you are invited to play and listen at times with professional performances, as well.
7:20 am
and then tomorrow, i'll keep it as professional as possible, right here on "today in the bay." >> thanks, mike. now time to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at the microclimate forecast. just a blanket of clouds. >> i don't blame people who want to stay in longer. there is a lot to do, so let's get you a check of the forecast, starting in half moon bay. maybe a trip to the beach for your sunday plans. bundle up, it will be chilly in the morning. by the time the afternoon rolls around, we'll see that cloud cover mix out more of that sunshine. but still, chilly in those 60s. something else i wanted to warn you about if you are headed to the beach. because of the energy on our coastline, we are looking at that beach hazard staying in effect. so just watch your children and yourself. those wave heights from four to eight feet. more of that activity is going to stay to the south as it works down. it's a post tropical storm now in the pacific, but we see those rain bands moving in own los

7:22 am
the bay is also going to look very nice. 73 in san francisco. 78 in hayward. as we go into tuesday, here is where we play hide and seek with summerlike temperatures. we'll look at more cooling, more wind ahead for tuesday. but watch what happens on wednesday. we'll rebound those temperatures once again, some 80s and 90s return to the board. so just hang on tight. we'll get through this roller coaster here. san francisco, though, mild for today and tomorrow. watch out for the breeze that returns on tuesday and our inland valleys, 80s and 90s. we'll be just fine. >> cinthia, thanks. 7:22 right now. much more ahead. coming up, did you see it? a major win for tennis star coco gauff. we go to the moment she earned her first grand slam title. sports is after the break.

on saturday. this week, the house of representatives begins work on funding for the new fiscal year. the senate already has passed all 12 of the bills. but the house has passed only one, with 11 bills waiting passage by september 30th. political analyst larry gerston joins us. larry, good to see you. good morning. by my estimation, that's 14 days of work that they have to finish this, they don't go back until tuesday. so what are the chances they will finish in job in time? >> good counting, kira. snap on your seat belt, because we are in for some tough times. when there is a conflict between the house and senate, they pass a continuing resolution. you put things off for 30, 60 days and work everything out and come back and sign up with your budget. not this time. not this time, because you've got to put 20 members, the

money spent on border disasters. so you really got a problem here that seems almost impossible to solve over the next 14 days of work. >> but who's counting? so correct me if i'm wrong, it seems that the divide is between house republicans, it's not the democrats and republicans. how does this get worked out? >> kevin mccarthy right now must not be getting a lot of sleep. as the republican speaker of the house, one of two things will happen. first of all, he gives in to the freedom caucus and slows everything down and the country comes to a halt in terms of government spending. in other words, a shutdown. that's not going to be good for him. secondly, the bills will kick off the freedom caucus and bring

down mccarthy from the speakership. so he finds himself in a bunch of hot water. this goes back to the very way he gaped that speakership -- gained that speakership. republicans are so fractured in the house that it's just difficult for anything to get done. and now, as we say, the chickens have come home to roost. and that's a lot of trouble ahead. >> yeah, those 15 votes sure showed that he's not one to give up easily. so who knows if he will give in to the freedom caucus. and would democrats give in to him? it will be interesting to see what happens. larry, thanks for your time this morning. it is 7:51. up next, a quick look at the top stories, including the death toll unimaginable, thousands killed by that earthquake in
