bay neighborhood. and the september 11th memorial, marking 22 years since the terror attacks that forever changed america. we'll preview the ceremony starting later this hour as our nation carries on the promise to never forget. also, it's a landmark day for b.a.r.t. riders are waking up to service changes, including the end of the line for some rather familiar-looking trains. a big step b.a.r.t. takes today into the future. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this monday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check the morning commute with mike in just a little bit. first, let's look at the forecast. cinthia pimentel is in for kari. >> nice to see everybody. i love my morning team. let's get started bright and early on this monday morning. we're going to have a very nice day to kick off the week. nothing in the way of fog in san francisco, looking beautiful as we take a look over the transamerica building. but we are having some trouble waking up the data there in san

francisco on this monday morning. we'll say upper 50s, as is the rest of the bay area. we'll do 51 in morgan hill, a bit of a chilly start. overall we'll be seeing a nice day today. nice and comfortable in the valleys, 80s and low 90s, then we're going to change things up quickly as we see the breeze returning tonight, cooler for your tuesday plans. i'll walk you through everything in the microclimate forecast. mike, you're looking at a crash in palo alto? >> we saw signs of the crash and some flares were laid out north 101 right at the university off-ramp. it looks like everything is on the right shoulder and cars are able to -- look how much space there is, light traffic. we'll track that. no major issues. there was another crash in san francisco and then 680/84, a lot of activity. it kind of calmed down over the last 20 minutes. that's good news. we have one report i'm tracking coming down i-80 westbound, your commute toward the carquinez

bridge. there was a car fire reported on the side. there's brush in the area. we're going to stay in the same area. i hand it right back to you. >> thank you very much. new overnight, that illegal sideshow activity causing more than the usual late-night disruption. in this case, it was gunfire sending people running for cover on city streets. >> kris sanchez is in the newsroom this morning. it sounds like this could have had a far worse outcome. >> reporter: isn't that the case? the stunts went on for more than two hours in several locations, spanning about four miles in vallejo. the first is a known hotspot. if you look on google maps, you'll see the skid marks on the ground. this is the intersection just off 37. now, while the donuts and spinouts lasted about 35 minutes, the crowd dispersed before police arrived. the crowd came back together about 15 minutes later, about four miles away at sonoma boulevard and lemon street, just

blocks from carquinez bay. you see the fireworks there. in this part of the video, you see people hit by a car that was doing donuts. we don't know how badly they were hurt. we do know this can be a very dangerous situation. eventually, the crowd dispersed after midnight, not because police showed up, but because someone fired dozens of gunshots into the air. we have reported on sideshows at this particular location at least twice before in the last couple years. to be clear, all sideshow activity is illegal in vallejo, it is illegal to participate, just being a spectator is breaking the law, and promoting or organizing sideshows is prohibited by city ordinance, which has been in effect for almost two years now. east bay law enforcement deployed this qr code for people to report illegal sideshow activity, it's a regional sideshow enforcement team. it is available in unincorporated areas of alameda county, hayward and san leandro.

you can tell the communities all around the bay, as you have heard in our reporting, they're trying to crack down, trying to find ways to keep drivers and spectators from doing this sort of activity. we are fining spectators, fining drivers, impounding cars. in san jose, something new that a lot of folks are watching, mayor matt mahan called on social media companies to do their part to penalize people who organize and promote sideshows on their platforms. we're watching to see how that plays out. >> thank you very much, kris. well, today we're also marking 22 years since the day the world changed forever. we have a live look at new york city's world trade center memorial, where mourners are remembering the thousands of lives lost in the september 11th terror attacks. the commemoration begins later this hour with a moment of silence to mark the moment the first plane struck tower one. >> it will be one of six moments of silence, including the moment the planes struck each tower and

the moment each tower fell. other moments of silence will mark the attack of the pentagon and the crash of united flight 93, which crashed in pennsylvania on its way to sfo. we have more from tracy strahan from our new york city sister station, who is in lower manhattan this morning. >> reporter: good morning from lower manhattan, where thousands are expected to gather to commemorate 22 years since the deadliest terror attack on u.s. soil. vice president kamala harris and other dignitaries will be here for the tribute to those lost in the september 11th attacks. those attacks on the world trade center, the pentagon, and the crash of hijacked flight 93 in shanksville, pennsylvania. so many remember the days of anguish of what became known down here as ground zero, some waited for word of their loved ones for days as crews and volunteers went through the rubble. 343 firefighters from the fdny

died on september 11th of 2001. exposure to 9/11 conditions in the aftermath of the attacks has claimed nearly as many lives. security is tight here in lower manhattan as they prepare for that ceremony to begin later this morning. we're in lower manhattan. i'm tracie strahan for "today in the bay." >> thank you. and new york city's remembrance is just one of many events happening today coast to coast. in our next half hour, "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab will show us how the bay area is remembering victims. to the devastation now in morocco where as of this morning more than 2,400 deaths are now confirmed from the strongest earthquake to hit that country in years. new images show the moment the 6.8 quake rolled through the city of marrakech late friday. it sent patrons on one rooftop restaurant running for their lives. there are still big fears the number of dead will continue to climb with so many areas yet to be reached by rescuers.

in the next half hour. let's take a live look outside. waiting for the sun's arrival as we take a look outside overlooking downtown san jose. cinthia is in for kari this morning. what are we in store for today? >> a very nice day. let's go out to oakland where we're starting out mostly clear as people make their way over 880. lots of people take b.a.r.t. in oakland and the east bay to get around, and this morning we're going to start out at 56 degrees in the east bay. we'll take a little bit of a dip as we go into 7:00 a.m., and 70s at lunchtime, overall a very nice day. 70s along the water, upper 80s in areas like martinez and los gatos. we're going to be in for a nice day before we have a cooldown as early as this afternoon into tuesday. for now, mike is helping you get around with cheaper gas prices. >> or maybe more expensive cheaper gas prices. they are rising. not so bad in sunnyvale.

great gas on matilda is at $4.69, just a dime higher than last week. in other spots i've seen prices go up 40 cents in the last weekend. dublin in the middle here, the low in alameda county, $4.85 at the exxon. and in marin county, hq fuels on shoreline highway, we're looking at $4.95 in mill valley. on the roadways, not a lot of change over the last few minutes. we are looking at a smooth flow of traffic around the bay bridge. getting there, west 80 does slow suddenly as you're heading through el cerrito out of richmond. so west 80 temporarily slowing. there may have been a crew that cleared in the last few minutes. at the toll plaza, very easy drive. >> thank you for those $4 gas prices, because i saw some $6 gas prices. thank you. >> spend your extra $2 looking

chilly, in the mid-50s. there will be plenty of more sunshine and temperatures warming up into the 70s already at 10:00 a.m., and a beautiful lunchtime hour ahead as well. we'll track your full microclimate forecast in a little bit. more headlights heading through the dublin shot and more taillights on the san mateo bridge. i saw some flashing lights. that cleared from the flat section just a few minutes ago. things are moving better toward the peninsula. we'll double-check because it's starting to build in the east bay. good morning. happy monday to you. we get a lot of information about inflation this week. inflation has been slowing as the economy remains strong. hostess making news with a major multi-billion dollar deal. the stock is twink. hoho and ding dong were available. they chose that. big week for google. the company begins its first antitrust trial this week as the

government looks into business deals making google the default search engine for things like apple, safari web browser. you remember the antitrust trial. it's that big. we're going to be watching the situation with united auto workers very carefully, they could strike against all three of the automakers at the end of the week. one of the biggest strikes in american history. we've had auto strikes like this one before, but never against multiple carmakers at the same time. an auto strike would be a major blow to the economy, but president biden has steadfastly called himself a pro-union president. will he place himself firmly on the side of auto workers? he has big decisions ahead. over the weekend, biographer walter isaacson started to walk back some of what he wrote in his new biography of elon musk that comes out tomorrow.

isaacson said musk ordered the starlink system to be turned off in areas around crimea in order to stop a ukrainian attack on russian forces that musk single-handedly thwarted ukraine's effort in the war. isaacson is now clarifying, saying, quote, ukraine asked musk to enable internet coverage for their drone sub attack on the russian fleet. musk did not enable it because he thought, probably correctly, that would cause a major war. isaacson is saying the first claim that musk claimed the internet off to thwart a ukrainian attack on russian ships is not right. musk didn't turn it off, he refused to turn it on. that attack could start a major war is a notable statement on his part. as far as ukraine is concerned, they're already in a major war. in the book he said exactly the opposite. musk secretly told his engineers to turn off coverage within 100 miles of the crimean coast. as a result, when the ukrainian drones got near the russian

fleet, they lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly. the biographer walter isaacson will be on the "today" show, the book comes out tomorrow. this correction came over the weekend friday after musk objected. so you've got to decide, is walter isaacson, the biographer of steve jobs and leonardo davinci who spent two years with elon musk telling the truth, or is elon musk telling the truth? isaacson says it's musk, that he made a mistake. >> interesting. >> thanks, scott. well, if you're still without your brock purdy jersey and you fly alaska airlines, now may be the time to get one. the airline has expanded its partnership with purdy, tweeting yesterday he just joined the airline's starting lineup. you're probably asking, what does that mean to me? according to the posting, anyone flying out of the bay area wearing a purdy jersey will

receive priority boarding. it holds through the end of the nfl season. some pb&j lovers dreaming of the possibilities with word of a possible merger. >> how about peanut butter and jelly twinkie sound? this is a combination now whetting some people's appetites. this is all on the word that smucker's jam and jif peanut butter is close to a deal to buy the hostess brand. the deal is valued at about $5 billion. neither side is commenting on reports, but other deals involving packaged foods have increased recently, including the mars striking the deal with kevin's natural foods and campbell soup buying the maker of rao's pasta sauce. if you're feeling lucky, you have until just before 8:00 tonight to buy that ticket for tonight's power ball. the grand prize, half a billion. no one won that over the

[ laughter ] >> i'll teach you after the show. it's easy. we better get to that forecast. >> let's get to it on this monday morning, making people hungry already and it's going to be a nice day for you to take that lunch outside. let's start over in the south bay, looking at a beautiful look over downtown san jose, mainly clear this morning. our temperatures are going to be pretty similar to what we had yesterday in those 80s. we'll do 81 downtown, 85 in los

gatos, and upper 80s as you make your way from morgan hill to gilroy at 88 degrees. into the east bay, it's going to be a little cooler along the water with the help of that onshore breeze. we'll do upper 70s in oakland and kick up our microclimates and do 89 degrees in concord, a very warm day. but as you make your way further into coco county, we'll do low 90s. closer to the water, upper 60s in half moon bay at 68, meantime, the peninsula looking nice and sunny with 75 from san mateo, redwood city, and we'll do 78 in palo alto. the city is also going to be a nice day for the start. we'll do 65 in the marina, 74 in the mission. as far as the north bay goes, cooler along the water in marin county, but we will see those temperatures ramping up as you make your way from novato at 84 to low 90s from ukiah into clear lake. we're looking, also, at the winds picking up this afternoon.

your lunchtime hour. if you are closer to the coast, we are going to see winds around 15 to 20 miles an hour, and continuing to ramp up as we go into the afternoon, which will vernally bring us a cooler day as we go into our tuesday plans. the storm systems will keep their way to the north of us, keeping that high pressure away. our temperatures are going to hold steady over the next couple of days, so we'll keep our seven-day forecast in san francisco mild today, turning breezy this afternoon, and then a slight dip on tuesday. then we'll rebound temperatures to mild, mainly for the second half of the week. our inland valleys will see a dip as we go from upper 80s, low 90s today to low 80s tomorrow, but then rebounding into the upper 80s for the rest of the week. mike, what's going on in palo alto? >> i had these flares, they were gone, and the set of headlights was on the right shoulder, north 101 around the university off-ramp. they re-lit some flares and it

"today in the bay"'s bob redell is live at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. promising to cut down on wait times, i understand. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, laura and marcus. starting today, b.a.r.t. is implementing new train schedules, the transit agency promises that from now on no rider will wait more than 20 minutes for a scheduled train. we're here at walnut creek b.a.r.t. or any other stations within the transit system. and this is no matter when they're riding, according to b.a.r.t.

there will be improved weekend and evening service. and service on the yellow line, the busiest weekday line, will be increased. b.a.r.t. says the changes are aimed at increasing ridership post covid. the transit agency tells us that weekend ridership is growing faster than it is on weekdays, but that weekend service is still just 60% to 70% of pre-pandemic ridership. weekdays, just about 40%. >> right now weekend and evening service is every 30 minutes and that's going to change to be every 20 minutes. so there will be no more 30-minute waits on b.a.r.t. any time of day, any day of the week. >> reporter: and last night b.a.r.t. rolled out its last scheduled ride for its legacy trains, so starting today commuters will only ride their so-called fleet of the future trains. b.a.r.t. says its legacy trains might be seen on occasion for special events. reporting live here outside walnut creek b.a.r.t., bob

redell, "today in the bay." >> good to know. thanks, bob. now it's time to check in with mike inouye. >> mike has been keeping track of all of these changes. he was telling us to prepare for it last week. >> b.a.r.t. has been talking a lot about it. >> exactly. you're relaying the message as well. what's the biggest improvement you're finding for riders? >> bob was talking about more service for the yellow line. that's coming out of antioch. but also the orange line, i believe, also will have a timed transfer to get into san francisco. that may be the most convenient and biggest time gain. we have that change happening today, the re-imagined schedule. what i do appreciate is it looks like they've taken the data they've gotten since covid, people have come back to the office in a different way, different commutes, so they've adapted their schedule to offer more service in the ways that they believe the riders will find it most valuable. so kudos to b.a.r.t. we'll see how things shake out. so far, on time. vta will have a change, the blue

and green line have track work, that means overnight track work as well, and it will mean turns like ours at the station have been blocked off from time to time. highway 4 has slowing, highway 37, standard build for the morning commute. we have slowing, the extra slowing westbound 80 coming down into richmond and el cerrito. there was an earlier crash blocking the lane. i believe they've cleared the second lane and that should be good news. we'll track it. i have some more good news. the weather today is going to be beautiful. we'll start out checking in on livermore, waking up at 55 degrees. very busy as people make their monday commute. down here in san jose, also a mostly clear night and we'll wake up in the 50s as you get ready for the day. lots of beautiful weather around the bay area. low 70s in san francisco, 80s in the south bay and maybe a few 90s as you make your way into solano county.

more details in the full forecast in a little bit. >> thank you. 5:34 right now. we are following breaking news from overnight. police are investigating a shooting and police are telling our photographer at the scene it happened about two and a half hours ago near 23rd avenue and east 12th street in an enclosed area. we do know the victim was shot multiple times but there's no update on their condition. right now, we are still waiting confirmation from police about this investigation. now to a live look at the 9/11 memorial in new york city. that is where in about 15 minutes mourners are set to mark the first in the tragic series of events that unfolded there 22 years ago in the september 11th terror attacks. we saw vice president kamala harris there, as well as new york dignitaries. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is here this morning. those touched by the lives lost, that pain, i would imagine, just being felt every day.

>> reporter: that really is true, marcus and laura. here in the bay area the community of los gatos carries the pain especially heavy on september 11th, when 22 years ago two los gatos high school graduates, how considered to be heroes, lost their lives. ♪♪ >> reporter: a memorial for mark bingham and todd beamer, who heroes who stormed the cockpit on united flight 93, a flight that people onboard fought desperately to take back from terrorists. their actions likely thwarting efforts to slam the plane into a building in washington, d.c. and presumably saving lives on the ground while they lost their own, as the plane crashed into an empty field in pennsylvania. during that memorial, bingham and beamer's names, were read, along with the names of all of the other victims. a bell sounding to honor each of them. there was a 21-gun salute,

followed by doves flying into the air as a symbol of hope. for the more than 150 people who attended yesterday's tribute, it was more than just looking back, it was also about moving forward. >> it's who we were on 9/12 as a country and as a people and support group, and those are the lessons we need to carry forward. you ask people that want to get involved, it's, like, do you know your neighbor, why don't we start there, see what they need and that's how you build community. >> reporter: bay area agencies honored those killed. state senator dave core tessie and the sheriff's department hosted a day of remembrance, with emergency and religious leaders. the focus of the event was on

responders and civilians who died in the september 11th attack. at oakland city hall, oakland mayor sheng thao will join other city leaders to conduct a moment of silence honoring those lost and the annual firefighter memorial service for contra costa fire will take place as well as other activities in concord. the event will be live streamed on the facebook page for those at work and may not be able to attend in person. a particularly somber day for the entire nation. >> most definitely. it brings back so many memories, and of course we'll never forget. thank you very much. our coverage of 9/11 continues not only at 6:00 a.m., but following "today in the bay" on the "today" show at 7:00 a.m. that's when rehema ellis will report live from the national memorial at ground zero. 5:38 right now.

in other news, police in milpitas are looking for this man in connection with two attempted break-ins. they've identified him as gabriele ruiz and say he was recently released from jail. in one case police say he tried to enter a home on big bend drive but was scared off. a short time later, a homeowner on grand teton reported an intruder breaking a window. security footage showed the same man in each location. a grateful palo alto restaurant owner is thanking his dedicated customers for the help they provided in keeping his restaurant from a sudden and unexpected shutdown. mike's diner bar has been in the city's midtown for three decades. in july, the owner says he paid rent one day late because he was in the hospital with his daughter. that soon spiralled into an eviction notice. the community rallied around him with more than 1,400 people signing petitions supporting him. in the last few days, mike reached a deal with the property owner. >> at the 11th hour, we were able to strike a deal and it's

let's start in antioch, we're waking up to 59 degrees. it's the kind of september morning where you do need a light jacket. look at the time you're heading out for lunch, 11:00, 12:00, already in the 80s, and we're going to go into upper 80s, low 90s in the valleys. a nice, comfortable day around the bay area to start off our workweek. some changes are in the forecast as we go into tonight. it's going to turn breezier and cool down briefly for our tuesday plans. but then ahead we'll have a steady weather pattern in the 80s in the valleys. we'll talk about that. mike is looking ahead at the drive. >> the eastshore freeway, things are moving smoother. if you're driving from the car carquinez bridge toward the bay bridge, we see slowing on the incline and we should see metering lights. we have seen them turned on in the last few seconds. into the city, later on, we're looking ahead toward game time. 6:45 the giants will be playing

ago on 9/11. we will have much more on today's tributes. for now we return most of you to "the today show." for we certainly all remember it so well. 5:47 right now on your monday morning. overlooking downtown san jose, waiting for the sun's arrival. we're coming off a delightful weekend over the bay area. temperatures in the mid-80s. >> it was nice, except for saturday. in the south bay there was some thunderstorm activity going on. but we got rid of it pretty quickly. sunday was was beautiful. today is another nice day. let's get a check of our microclimate forecast, getting everybody ready for the workweek ahead. we'll start in the east bay. what about pleasant hill, getting ready to head to work or maybe school. it's one of those mornings where you need a sweater because

temperatures are in the 50s for the start of the morning. then lunchtime rolls around, the kiddos go out for recess, temperatures at around 12:00, 80 degrees in pleasant hill. the rest of the bay area will see beautiful weather, the mission coming in at 73 degrees, 78 in hayward and we'll do 87 in martinez, 85 in livermore, as well as los gatos, and the upper 80s for the south county, from morgan hill to gilroy. tonight, monday plans may include going out to oracle park. we'll start out nicely for the game against the guardians and then see cloud cover rolling in and gusts from 20 to 30 miles an hour, as we have a weak front dropping into the area that is going to cool our temperatures. tomorrow, no 90s, even in our hottest spot, which tends to be fairfield. it will be mid-80s. from oakland to san mateo and

the south county, cooling down about 10 degrees, 79 for san martin tomorrow. then we'll rebound once again on wednesday, so we're in a tricky pattern here. but overall a very nice week where temperatures will hold steady. we're keeping our eye on the atlantic. we have hurricane lee right now over puerto rico, still a category 3 storm, with winds at around 120 miles an hour. and the reason this is causing a lot of attention, a lot of interest in the news is because we are expecting it and hoping that it takes this north turn by wednesday on into thursday, avoiding the east coast there as the storm continues to be a category 2 as we go into thursday morning. so we'll keep you posted on that. otherwise, people there on the east coast still have to be very vigilant along the waters. and maybe closer to the waters in san francisco, it's going to be a nice day. mild today, but then we'll turn those conditions into more breezy as we cool things down for tuesday, but then rebound

once again, nice weather in san francisco. our inland valleys are going from upper 80s today, some places in the low 90s, then we'll cool down for tuesday and hold those temperatures steady, rebounding once again in the upper 80s. mike, let's check on palo alto. >> we have those changes, early morning we had a crash, a disabled vehicle after the crash. now we just have the flares. as the build is happening, we see more cars heading north and south. traffic moves smoothly 101 past university. this activity, i can clear that from the map because there's just flares left to burn out on the shoulder. in the east bay and south bay, san jose shows the first slowing we typically see around 5:40. there is activity on 580 near the dublin interchange but not affecting the interchange. no slowing over there. westbound highway 4 continues with the build out of antioch. so pittsburg, bay point and into concord. 242 and walnut creek moving smoothly.
