in remote communities like this. this is all that's left of what was once a shrine here you can find fragments of people's lives, including theire mail and bills all the while, the race to find survivors continues. this morning the desperate search for survivors entering a critical phase rescue teams from morocco racing to make every minute count it's been 48 hours since this quake struck the most powerful tremor for more than 100 years sent local and tourists alike running for the streets in this historic city this wedding singer cutoff mid-song >> i was petrified some people were just crying and screaming. >> reporter: but the worst of the devastation in remote villages in the high atlas

mountains where adobe homes couldn't withstand the force of the quake. moments of exhausted joy when survivors are found in the rubble but also heart break when rescuers arrive too late. >> working in these situations . >> reporter: we traveled up a winding roadblocked in places by is still of paramount situation. >> reporter: we traveled up a winding mountain road to reach the village. this village was home to 3,000 people the locals say at least 40 have been killed. that's more than 1% of the population that lost their lives. among them, his three daughters, baby son and wife. i'm all alone now, he says i had a home and a family. now i have nothing this id card of them, the only photograph he has left the un says 300,000 people across the region were impacted by the quake and in small villages and major

destruction. you can see the earth. it is a small space for the survivors to be in, but we're still working. >> mr. gonzalez, what is the most acute need right now that you are facing >> we have water, people screaming water. but inside their houses. able te of their homes, so need of so they need blankets since it's cold here already, blankets, tents, sleeping bags that kind of material is needed here right now. >> mr. gonzalez, the rescue process seems arduous. i don't see equipment. are you moving the rubble with your hands >> neighbors, volunteers and ourselves are moving all the earth and the rocks and everything to try to look for the people there is no machinery here we are very remote in the mountains.

this would be 50% chance of developing over the next several days, but we are watching lee. right now it is a category 3 storm. 300 miles, 120 miles an hour winds. moving northwest at 7 miles an hour, could briefly become a category 4 storm tuesday morning. it will split the uprights the main impacts we see right now from coastal florida all the way up to new england for the next seven days, high surf, rip current, a dangerous rip current threat we put those spaghetti plots, all those models into effect looks like nova scotia landfall. we're talking about the next seven days, so we will continue to monitor this. >> thank you so much. now let's go to developments in the manhunt for an escaped

morning. rescuers in turkey making slow but steady progress overnight to save that american explorer who has been trapped for days now thousands of feet below the surface. kelly cobiella joins us with more. >> reporter: we have an update from turkish rescuers saying a short time ago that he is about 600 feet from the surface. they made huge progress overnight. literally moving mountains, blasting holes in the cave to carry him to the top this morning the american scientist trapped deep underground in a turkish cave. 700 feet on sunday another several hundred feet overnight. >> they have to prepare that stretcher so he doesn't slide in it they have to prepare that stretcher because they will get

that's new territory. >> i did not like gym class as a kid. i hated the monkey bars. i hated field day, all of that stuff. but i love a challenge, and this i'm saying, okay, you didn't like it because it was hard. now you need to take your 45-year-old self and do something that is reallython, a 26 miles, challenging. the new york city marathon, all 26 miles, something i never imagined i'd attempt, even in my wildest dreams so when i first started doing this, i just thought i would go outside and practice sometimes i never really thought about really what it takes to prepare for a marathon. >> for help, i enlisted nike running coach jess woods who has done 18 ultra marathons. >> she will send me a schedule for the week what i have learned is running isn't always just running. some days you may just run for 30 minutes other days you run for a longer amount of time but the goal is to get to 26
