there? >> who? >> all right, all right, all right, the one and only matthew mcconaughey will talk about his new childrens' book at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." right now at 6:00, crews still at the scene of that massive sinkhole in san francisco. an update on where repairs stand this morning. >> even the houses that have not fallen, they are still living outside of their houses because they are afraid the houses will fall down on them. a race against time in morocco as rescuers try to pull trapped earthquake victims from the rubble. the new local push to get survivors much-needed assistance. a san francisco's largest conference, dreamforce, kicks off. but could it be the last one for the city? we're live this morning with a look at some of the things you'll see as highlights this year and why the ceo of salesforce says they may pull out. this is "today in the bay."
6:01 am
good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we started with some breaking news overnight, maybe you felt it. a small earthquake rattled the south bay. it was a 3.3 magnitude quake that rattled residents at about 1:30 this morning. it was centered outside of morgan hill. the usgs says people felt it as far away as orinda and pacific grove. no reports of damage. now, cinthia, at first it struck me as interesting to see that they felt it as far away as orinda and the east bay, but it's along a certain fault line. >> it's along the calveras fault and that starts around san ramon and it goes all the way down into san benito, and it sandwiches the san andreas fault and goes out to the coastline. maybe that's why some people in the east bay did feel it. minor quake, 3.3, a depth of around four miles. the closer it is to the surface, the more that people can feel

it. if you have felt any earthquake since, make sure to let us know on nbcbayarea.com. let's start out and get a check of our forecast. san jose waking up to patchy clouds this morning, 60 degreesment we're going to warm up nicely, staying mild and breezy at times. i'll tell you the details coming up. mike has a check on the roads. >> we expect slowing in the south bay and it's kicking in. this is the tail end of the first slowing, but we do notice that it persists. it continues toward the san jose international airport. there may be an incident as you head through santa clara. i'm tracking that as well. the first burst should start to move and then clear up and then return in about another half hour. we'll track that for the south bay. we have this build off the castro valley y and south on the nimitz, south 680 may see slowing toward sunol. everything moves and pushes toward the san francisco commute. in the city it looks clear on the sensors for the freeways, but we've got a lot of big stories over there. most definitely. we continue to follow this in
6:03 am
san francisco. have you seen it? crews had to work throughout the evening just to repair this massive sinkhole. this is at fillmore and green streets. it happened after two antiquated pipes ruptured sunday night, sending hundreds of thousands of gallons of water rushing downhill and took a lot of neighbors by surprise. crews say more than 100 homes and businesses are either damaged or impacted by the sand and water. kris sanchez is there. she'll have more on the overnight repairs coming up in a live report in our next half hour. san francisco's biggest conference is back. dreamforce is set to begin hours from now. this is in the heart of the city. and some wonder if this may be san francisco's final dreamforce. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live for us in san francisco's moscone center. how are things shaping up? >> reporter: things are just about to get under way very soon here. year in and year out, dreamforce brings in tens of thousands of

people right to the heart of downtown san francisco, where actually what used to be howard street, but now it's transformed into this dreamforce area here. talking about the business impact of dreamforce, that is quite significant for this year, the downtown area and the city, but this year there's a lot riding on how smoothly this three-day conference will go, specifically after bold statements from the salesforce ceo, marc benioff. in a recent interview with the "chronicle," marc benioff said if this dreamforce is impacted by the current situation with homelessness and drug use, it may be the last dreamforce in the city. there are a lot of eyes on san francisco for these next three days and beyond, as outside political groups and the national media are keeping close watch. one of those groups, the newly formed we san francisco, is working to recruit community members ready for change. >> and the idea is a

community-led movement. so if you were here in 2017, you know, the city was bustling, it was booming, and maybe you didn't have to get involved. but all of the people i talk to now who maybe weren't engaged in the city, weren't involved in politics, now are, like, we have to get involved. this is unacceptable, the current state of public safety, civic disorder, government accountability. >> reporter: now, as far as the conference is concerned, there will be a lot of talk about ai and its impact on different industries. among the speakers at this conference, openai ceo sam altman, experts from stanford university's institute of human-centered ai, celebrities matthew mcconaughey, viola davis and spike lee, and san francisco mayor london breed will make a speaker appearance during the conference as well. things will start at 10:00 a.m. this morning, things kicking off with the keynote from ceo marc

benioff. we'll be closely monitoring to see if he will make any other comments about how smoothly the conference is going so far and if this will be dreamforce's last conference in san francisco. that will begin at 10:00 a.m., as well as a long list of things to look out for in the next three days. the dreamforce concert happens tomorrow at chase center and that will feature the foo fighters. a lot of people are looking forward to that as well. >> such a big boost for the economy, as well as a spotlight on the city. hopefully it sticks around for many years to come. thanks, ginger. 6:05 right now. time is critical right now in morocco, where rescue teams are scrambling to save people from the rubble of the earthquake. this morning the number of confirmed deaths from that quake is approaching 3,000. the numbers are still expected to climb because teams have yet to each so many hard-hit areas. the bay area's moroccan community is now trying to get

word out about a gofundme with money going directly to local nonprofits in morocco. one moroccan to moved to the u.s. is among those trying to make sure survivors get the resources they desperately need. >> just hoping that people will not look at morocco and think that's the other. we should think that this could be me. >> in some smaller towns, entire communities are now sleeping outside because the homes they were commonly made from, traditional mud and brick, are now entirely collapsed. 6:06 right now. a bill to make child sex trafficking a more serious felony now one step away from governor gavin newsom's desk. here is a live at the state capitol where bipartisanship is helping push it to the finish line. it would keep repeat offenders in prison longer and includes an amendment lawmakers say would ensure human trafficking victims

coliseum. it is the future that a lot of people are talking about. it's still far from certain with the a's having at least one foot out the door. but now one minor league soccer team wants to be a part of the next chapter, the roots. they started in oakland about five years ago, now play at cal state east bay in hayward. the team is looking into building a smaller stadium on a nearby lot of the coliseum complex. you may remember the a's now are half owners of the coliseum site, recently suggesting it's not interested in selling. today oakland leaders will discuss a possible lease agreement with the roots, along with oakland's women's soccer team. roots leaders tell the "east bay times" they hope the plan can fall into place within two years. it is nine minutes after 6:00. cinthia is in for kari. nice to have you. nice weather, too. >> nice weather for sports, for adults, for kids in school, football season, soccer, everything going on. staying pretty mild and comfortable, but still remember to drink lots of water and stay

we're going to be a little warmer into parts of eastern coco county, we'll do 80 in martinez, and along the immediate shoreline, 73 in oakland, 75 in fremont, and low 80s as we go into the south county. it will stay cool and breezy toward the coastline as we see a change in the weather pattern only for today. as we go into wednesday, middle of the week, we're going to see temperatures rebound a little bit. we'll do upper 80s in santa rosa, 88 in concord, 92 in fairfield. that will be nice to get you through the rest of the workweek. and we'll do 85 in los gatos. as we take a look at our long-range outlook, most storms will continue to stay off to the north. we could be looking at more cloud cover returning as we go into thursday, friday. overall temperatures staying steady, dry, as we go into the final days of summer. looking at the weekend, a low pressure system in the pacific could bring cloud cover and
