he's under arrest, accused of forcing at least one student into prostitution. the stunned reaction this morning from fellow students. also, a high-stakes handshake. new details emerging this morning on a meeting involving vladimir putin and north korea's kim jong-un. this is "today in the bay". it is wednesday, and good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll get a look at that morning commute in just a moment. cinthia is in, once again, for kari with a look at our forecast. >> i think it's going to be a slightly warmer day than yesterday. yesterday was a bit breezy. good energy to get us through the middle of this workweek. we'll start looking at san francisco this morning, patchy fog over the city. yesterday the transamerica building was more covered than we saw this morning, and down here in the south bay mostly clear skies. right under our microclimate weather is the moon. i wish i could show it to you, but it's out there if you step

out the door. 56 will do it for us in san jose this morning, 55 in redwood city. we'll start with mild 60s in fairfield and brentwood. overall, a warm-up to a nice day, especially in the inland valleys, some 80s to upper 80s, 60s and 70s at the coast. we'll track that coming up. mike, what's going on on the road early this morning? >> we heard about a crash on the bay bridge. it was first reported eastbound and i was watching the span and then before it got cleared, they said it's closer to the toll plaza. i couldn't see anything from that camera. we'll just report the incident is clear. there is a blip westbound. i'm tracking that to see if there's anything else developing. really, that's the only thing on these maps. no major issues through contra costa county. overnight crews may be partially blocking one of those lanes in antioch. an incident pops up in 92. i'll get more details. we'll get you lane information

as soon as chp gets that to us. back to you. >> thanks very much. in the east bay, a local school district has said its elementary school cannot fly a pride flag. bob redell drives us live from sunol school this morning. i understand this comes after a pretty heated board meeting last night. they had to clear it out? >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, laura, because a number of the parents at this meeting were loud, and in some cases really angry. at issue is this flagpole behind me at the sunol glenn school here. if you're not familiar, sunol is between pleasanton and fremont. back in june someone tore down the gay pride flag the school had hoisted on campus. the staff put it back up, which triggered complaints, and then a meeting last night at the school board for the board to decide whether or not to allow the pride flag to fly again.

>> we are going to end this meeting. >> reporter: as you can hear and see there, there are interruptions, lots of yelling, several calls for order during the packed meeting. and just minutes after public comment began, deputies had to clear the room, as you mentioned. everyone in the audience, except for the media, was kicked out to allow the board to continue the debate. the board passed a resolution that immediately limits the type of flags that can be flown at the school to just the united states and california flags, not the pride flag. the superintendent was not happy with the decision, given that the staff here had supported flying the pride flag. >> it was a little disappointing given the fact that the entire staff wanted to have this resolution, and yet the board that oversees that staff didn't support the staff. so that feels a little -- there's a disconnect there.

but they certainly have the right to do that. >> reporter: the superintendent says that for the children what happened last night is a lesson in democracy in action, and shows the children if you don't like the board's decision, people can vote the board out during the next election. reporting live in sunol, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> very interesting. thank you so much for the latest. a popular east bay track coach now being held without bail, accused of forcing two women into prostitution, one of them a student. 39-year-old kyle whitmore coaches track at diablo valley college. he's also a teacher at the college. he's facing pimping and human trafficking charges. prosecutors say one of the two accusers is a college student who reported the crimes to authorities at the school. fellow students are in disbelief. >> i'm speechless, because it hit me real hard today. >> it makes you realize that, no

matter how safe we may feel, there's always stuff going on behind the scenes. >> so far, prosecutors are not revealing the specific details behind the charges, but whitmore has now been placed on indefinite leave. santa rosa police want to hear from you if this car looks familiar. this is an image close to the scene where a middle school student was struck yesterday afternoon. police say the girl was in a crosswalk at guerneville road at about 2:30 p.m. when she was hit by this car. it was moving fairly slowly on a turn. the girl is said to be fine. police say the driver drove off after stopping and helping the girl to her feet. a witness later reported that incident. happening today, the man accused in the violent hammer attack at nancy pelosi's san francisco home is due in court for a status hearing. david depape is accused of seriously injuring paul pelosi

last summer. today's hearing is tied to the state charges. depape's attorney says the federal trial will likely take place first and that may begin as soon as next month. new video this morning of russian president vladimir putin's face-to-face meeting with north korean leader kim jong-un. kim jong-un arrived by armored train and the two men are meeting today at a russian space port. now, the leader is expected to ask russia for economic and military technology as russia seeks fresh ammunition supplies in its war with ukraine. kim jong-un is vowing to provide unconditional support. and new rumblings in washington after house speaker kevin mccarthy directs three committees to open an impeachment inquiry into president biden. it surrounds business deals made by the president and his son hunter biden. republicans are seeking bank records and other documents. the white house calls this move

extreme politics at its worst. >> house republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into president biden's conduct. taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption. >> this isn't based on anything substantive. it's based on the fact that he is being attacked from his right and throwing them red meat. >> this all comes as congress faces a september 30th funding deadline, and some hard line republicans are threatening to engineer a federal shutdown without an impeachment inquiry and spending cuts. our scott mcgrew is following this back and forth in washington. he'll have it all for us as he breaks it down in the next half hour. continuing our coverage of the sinkhole repairs, repairs remain in effect all from the rupturing of two antiquated

good wednesday morning to you. 5:13. let's go to the east bay. busy right now as people drive over 880 in fremont. mostly clear start, with temperatures in the upper 50s. we'll start to mix out of those early-morning clouds by around 8:00 or 9:00 this morning, and then lots of sunshine and a warm day ahead. we'll talk about that in the full microclimate forecast coming up. same freeway and different city. this is oakland northbound 880 with taillights past the flashing lights, which are on the shoulder. no lanes blocked for the nimitz by the coliseum, but there may be a new crash near the caldecott tunnel. i'll bring whatever we have coming up. good morning. happy wednesday. 5:14. oracle had its worst day in 20 years on the stock market as it disappointed investors with its

quarterly financial report, and that pulled the entire nasdaq lower. tens of thousands of people are in san francisco for dreamforce. our ginger conejero saab will have a full report coming up. today is a big day in washington. an ai summit. the leaders of all the major ai companies are going to speak to senators today in a closed-door briefing. it was senate majority leader chuck schumer's idea, who says congress waits far too long to create policy and laws around new inventions. >> on ai, we can't behave like ostriches and stick our heads in the sand. it will affect just about every aspect of society in major ways. both positive and negative. >> now, the leaders meeting with congress are from facebook and google and openai and nvidia. all the big names in commercial artificial intelligence. a number of people are concerned schumer isn't including others,

like from academia. in an off-camera interview with nbc, senator elizabeth warren said, quote, these tech billionaires want to lobby congress behind closed doors with no questions asked, and that's just plain wrong. her point, it is a radical departure from the usual way congress handles major questions. usually it's before a specialized committee. this is more like a college symposium, school for senators. but they're not in charge. attendance is optional. now, we just published a new episode of our podcast sand hill road. the episode title is "hey, senator, listen to this before the ai meeting". we spoke with an ai expert at stanford. >> calculators did not make humans not do math. it made humans do better math. and that is ultimately what we're trying to get toward. >> you can listen to that episode maybe on your way to the capitol on apple podcast and google play, spotify and more. laura and marcus, apple did as

[ laughter ] you also heard here first that it's going to be a nice day to get us through the middle of the week. palo alto is starting off mostly clear skies, 57 degrees. we might see a few clouds linger here, at least through 8:00, 9:00 this morning. but then by the time you step out for lunch, how about 71 degrees and lots of sunshine? pleasant hill, good morning. if you're getting ready to head to work or school, do grab a jacket. some spots are waking up in the 50s. by the time we get into this afternoon, we're going to lose the jackets. 77 as you head out the door at the 12:00 hour. let's see what the fog is going to do as we get you out the door hour-by-hour. some of it is still patchy at times through the peninsula, the east bay. we're going to see more clearing through the north bay at that hour, through the south bay into this afternoon, and then most of us seeing more of that clearing as we go into the middle of the day. overall, a warm day. but the coastline is going to be

hugged nice and height by that cloud cover. let's get you a look at what those temperatures hold. i said a nice day. warmer than what we saw yesterday. we'll do 86 in novato, 71 downtown san francisco, 79 in hayward. as we go into the valleys, 89 will do it for us in concord, 84 in morgan hill. just enjoy those nice temperatures while we have them, because as we look ahead, we're tracking a couple of systems that are rolling around, mainly to the pacific northwest. some of those impacts could start coming into the bay area, i would say as we go into the weekend. we're going to see a lot more ushering in of fog, a slight uptick in winds, and more showers that are starting to pop up mainly to the north for your weekend plans. if you're going up to maybe reading and to tahoe, yosemite, some areas of concern to watch there. but nothing too major. san francisco over the next couple of days, enjoy this beautiful weather that we have. we're looking at more cloud cover coming in for the weekend and those temperatures still

staying in the 60s for the most part. our inland valleys, 80s will keep it for us in the next couple of days, but watch how we take a little dip as we go into sunday, monday, tuesday, as more of the cloud cover and more breeze from the pacific ocean starts to come in, and dropping temperatures into the upper 70s. but overall, not that bad. what could be the situation, in the caldecott tunnel? any time the caldecott shows up on our reports, people get a concern for the morning commute. we are looking at a little build here toward the carquinez bridge and highway 4 shows the sensors tip. this is opposite your main commute and it's outside the caldecott, from what i understand. the detail is eastbound away from the highway. the reason there's so much concern where specifically it is, a bridge crew can help this vehicle if it's outside the tunnel and they're going to head out. there may be a traffic break away from the maze and heading toward orinda. we'll follow the update. coming in, westbound out of the

let me tell you the story of ken in los gatos and the internet router sitting next to him. ken and his family just moved here from chicago. they shipped their stuff and flew the final leg. ken packed that router in his carry-on bag. tsa flagged his bag, searched inside and sent him on his way. when ken arrived here, his router was missing. he contacted tsa and found his router in tsa lost and found in chicago. ken says tsa expected him to pick it up in person or pay to ship it. ken disagreed because he's confident the agent forgot to put the router back in his bag. so he contacted us. we contacted tsa.

there, but still it doesn't start for a few hours. most of that fog should push back to the coastline, giving us a very nice day ahead. it's chilly to start in the north bay. san rafael, good morning to you at 48 degrees. we'll see more sunshine and feel more warmth as people head out to lunch. antioch, good morning. a milder start there. as we go into the middle of the day we're going to see temperatures already in the 80s. overall it's going to be a nice day, warmer than what we had on tuesday with the breezes calming down. we'll talk about that in the full forecast. what's going on right now at the bay bridge toll plaza? >> it's a trend right now. we're talking about more volume. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza where i have been seeing a number of lights increasing in volume. we should see metering lights on in the next couple of minutes. no major issues, little dips in the sensors by the arrow there. a different orientation will show you you the slowing for 37. highway 4, the slowing in

antioch, bay point and soon in concord. a smooth flow of traffic at the dublin interchange, westbound 580 out of the altamont and highway 84 at the bottom of the screen, san jose's build is on for 101. back over to you. >> thanks, mike. happening today, cal state students are bracing for a new reality that will likely involve higher tuition costs. >> we're not talking about one hike, but a series of increases that will mean an added challenge for many students. kris, you've been looking closer at what this all means for a lot of struggling families. >> struggling families and just families in general. i have a high school senior, so this is pretty much the only topic of conversation in our house. csu trustees stay this is not going to affect the majority of students, though, because 60% of them are under grants or waivers. but when you consider the cal state system is the largest public university system in the

country, we are talking almost half a million students that will feel an impact. csu tuition hike proposal looks like this. it's 6% over five years, beginning next fall. so fall of 2024. and it could mean $342 more per year and $2,000 more by the year 2027, which is when the hike culminates. this would be the second tuition hike in 12 years and the csu's chief financial officer says trustees really have to consider this, because it costs more to run the '23 school csu system than the revenue the csu system brings in. it currently has a $1.5 billion funding gap. this proposed tuition increase would generate $840 million in new funding over five years, but opponents say it really comes at a big cost to students that the csu is supposed to serve. >> it would be a lot of stress on the students, it would be a

lot of stress on the students' parents, especially if the students are still living with their parents. >> trustees in long beach need to sharpen their pencils and come up with other ways to come up with money other than putting it on the backs and shoulders of the students. >> reporter: on average, csu tuition is about $5,700 per year for an undergraduate full-time student. to compare that, tuition at the uc system is more than $14,000, but neither of those figures include housing, books, food, all of the rest of it. csu professors, you heard from one of them there, they are fighting for a pay increase, but they oppose the hike as well. they say they should find another way to do it. students say they're going to protest at the meeting both today and tomorrow. >> it's a lot. >> your kids are a little farther behind. my daughter is a senior and every time the air conditioner goes on, it's, like, turn it off. >> mine is far off, but i've got

three all at once. i can't say a day doesn't go by and i don't think about it. thank you. it's 5:35 right now. an east bay luxury car dealership getting more help from law enforcement. this is after being repeatedly targeted by thieves. now, security cameras caught the latest incident just about 24 hours ago at platinum motors in martinez. that's when the general manager says two men ransacked the offices looking for keys, made off with a bmw worth $107,000 and an audi worth $80,000. he says insurance will cover the losses, but he also says those thieves actually grabbed about a dozen set of keys and he's afraid they'll come back soon for more. >> we moved to martinez for the same reason, and they keep following us because the cars we have here, as you can see, they're high-end cars. >> he tells us police have already agreed to boost their patrols and security guards will

now be on site. a new call for transparency from the family of a man shot and killed by a recently reinstated vallejo police officer detective. supporters packed last night's vallejo council meeting demanding answers about the reinstatement of the officer who killed sean monterrosa in 2020. it happened outside of a walgreens when police responded to reports of looting. investigators say the detective mistook a concealed hammer for a gun. no charges were ever filed against the detective, but the family is still demanding justice. their attorney says his team is carefully monitoring the situation. >> right now we're speaking with attorneys about what level of force these monitors should be allowed to use, certainly against an officer who has used deadly force against three unarmed citizens. >> so far, the detective not back in uniform. his attorney did not respond to our request for comment. a live look this morning at sunol glen elementary school where a controversial decision is bringing out emotions on both

sides. last night's debate centered around the school flying the pride flag, which treated heated confrontations and deputies were called in to keep the peace. eventually all attendees were forced to leave and the board members decided only the u.s. and state flag can be raised at the school effective immediately. "today in the bay"'s bob redell will have a live report in our next half hour. it's 5:37 right now. in just a few hours, dreamforce resumes in san francisco, in what organizers are calling the biggest ai event in the world. >> it's proving to be a test for city leaders as speculation swirls about the conference looking for a new home. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab joins us live from moscone center this morning. what's mayor london breed saying? >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. she's focusing on the positive, saying that dreamforce began in san francisco and that it belongs here.

played out. pennsylvania police will hold a press conference in about an hour. we will bring you that update then. it's a quarter until 6:00 right now. new this morning, more americans feeling overwhelmed by debt. a new finding suggests it's only rising, with no end in sight. rising interest rates and higher prices mean more people are turning to their credit cards. right now the nation's credit card debt is at an all-time high of $1 trillion. and with increased interest rates paying off debt, it's getting more and more expensive. to get a handle on it, experts have tips. start making more than the men mum payment per month. you can pay it off faster with lower interest. second, keep track of those payments. you don't want to miss a payment, because late fees obviously can add up. third, don't rack up your balance. lastly, avoid opening too many credit card accounts. the more cards you have, the more chances you have of getting into debt. they also recommend to take

cr, meaning the government would shut down at the end of the month. here is republican congressman ralph norman from south carolina. >> we're not going to get rolled again now. we're going to use our votes to defund as many things as we can. cr i'm not voting for, because it funds all the bad things that we say we are against. >> the white house warns one of the first programs to be affected is wic, food aid to women, infants and children. the white house says wic needs emergency funding, but we're talking about a situation with no funding for anything. some of those same lawmakers calling for a government shutdown are also calling for speaker of the house, kevin mccarthy, to step down. they say he's not conservative enough. yesterday, just hours before a scheduled speech to call for his ouster, mccarthy announced he was ordering an impeachment inquiry into president joe biden. it's been a while since we talked about impeachment.

nobody has been impeached. the first step is an inquiry. that's what mccarthy says he's authorizing. but usually house members vote to authorize an inquiry. in fact, back when speaker nancy pelosi tried to do the same thing that mccarthy did yesterday, just declare an inquiry, it was mccarthy who called her out and said, hold on, we have to have a vote to launch an inquiry. here is that very document from back during the early days of the very first trump impeachment. this time around, it's not clear mccarthy has the votes in his own party to authorize the inquiry. maybe that's why he's not asking for a vote. he hasn't specifically said what biden would be impeached for. his inquiry is supposed to find that out. republican congressman ken buck telling nbc, quote, there's not a strong connection at this point between the evidence on hunter biden and any evidence involving the president, so i am more focused on the issues that i think americans care about. republican don bacon speaking to

the hill newspaper, as of now i don't support an inquiry. i think it ought to be based on evidence of a crime that points directly to president biden. impeachment needs to be about the dad and not the son. it's pretty clear by now hunter biden got wealthy off proximity to his father. nobody is questioning that. companies hired him apparently in the hopes of having access to joe biden, but nobody has offered proof there was any kind of meaningful access. the president and first lady will convene their cancer cabinet today and announce new funding to detect and treat cancer. the program wants to cut cancer deaths in half in the next 25 years. and an unusual day in the senate. the top leaders in commercial ai from google, openai, nvidia and half a dozen more, are going to have a school, of sorts, for senators. we'll talk more about it as we talk about business news. that's coming up ten minutes past the hour. >> sounds good. we'll check back with you. travelers, watch your step.
