economy. also, an exclusive sitdown with former president donald trump in his first broadcast network interview since leaving office. this is "today in the bay." ♪♪ and we have made it to friday, good morning to you all out there. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm ginger saab, sierra is off this morning. we're going to get to that friday commute with mike in a moment but first we made it. >> made it two, got to make it through, what are we going to be looking at on the skies? >> we have really nice weather. it's been great all throughout the week. warm for the valleys and we'll have one more warm day before we get a cooldown for the weekend. it is already busy as we take a live look outside in dublin, 580 people coming into the bay area and we're going to see temperatures in the low 60s to start, starting out mostly cloudy, but then as we go

throughout the morning it's going to gradually clear out and we'll see our temperatures going from low 60s to mid-70s for the afternoon. so dublin reaching 83 for today, san jose headed up for 81 degrees, and in mountain view expect a high of 77. also comfortable in san mateo and in oakland with a high of 75. so, we'll talk more about the weekend coming up. mike, you already have two incidents on 92. >> let's remember, 92 goes all the way across the bay. the first incident we talk about is southbound 880 and 92, the interchange there affected by a crash. there was some major injuries reported in the area, a motorcycle involved in this crash, no details over the last half hour, but there's still activity there, sounds like it should it be off to the shoulder, and there were major injuries reported but that's all we know. no slowing on the sensors on the eastbound side for 92. peninsula side, westbound 92 around ralston, so just east of 280 there is a crash there, again, no slowing shows up, but

there's activity in the area, we're tracking as well. back to you. >> well, developing this morning, governor gavin newsom is ready to announce over $200 million to fight organized retail crime across california. but sadly, oakland will not be receiving a penny of it. >> yeah, that's because leaders missed a key deadline. today in the bay's rob redell live in newark. across the state this would be a huge boost. >> reporter: correct, the state of california will be awarding $267 million in the words of the governor's office to combat organized retail crime. the newark police department behind me along with 54 other plaintiff sheriffs and district attorney offices throughout the state will be receiving this money to hire more officers, create task forces and develop

investigative units. we know san francisco, for example, set to receive $17 million. one city that could definitely use that money but won't be receiving a dime as you mentioned, oakland, that city missed a deadline to submit an application to receive what we believe would have been millions of dollars from the state. the city administrator's office released this statement explaining what happened, and i'm quoting here, in early june the city's economic and work force development department staff identified the governor's real public safety plan grant opportunity and collaborated with opd and community partners to put together an application. opd and the community partners timely provided their material. unfortunately the economic and work force development department did not timely complete the submission. the city is reviewing what went wrong, and is looking at hiring a person to specifically handle any applications for state grants in the future. karl chan, a community leader in

oakland's china town, he says businesses in the area do not feel safe due to the rising crime rate. he feels the money would have been put to good use and hopes the state will reconsider oakland funding despite the fact the city missed that deadline. >> it's devastating to the people but also to the small businesses. pretty much the entire city would be benefitted if it -- if we have this money. >> reporter: later this morning the governor, governor gavin newsom, along with chp, will hold a virtual news conference to discuss this massive investment in the fight against real crime. this is bob redell, nbc bay area news. more details, take a look at this map here. this shows how much state money other areas, bay area cities will be receiving. in all we're talking about 15 agencies here, san jose police department, we see right here, they will receive $.8.5 million. the city saw large scale

shoplifting double between 2021 and 2022. in santa clara county getting $2 million. leaders there plan to use that money to set up a county-wide intelligence center to track retail theft trends. the family of an east bay man is demanding more answers after his death this week at dublin's santa rita jail. 39-year-old yuri brand was found unresponsive in his cell five days after being arrested on misdemeanor charges. the exact cause of his death has not yet been revealed but it is being called a homicide, and authorities have already identified his cell mate as a suspect. brand's family believes jail authorities are not being completely forthcoming in explaining what happened. >> i want to know how someone who has serious mental health issues is put in a cell with another inmate. >> he wasn't even on the santa rita roster, so that's a red

flag for me. secondly, he's supposed to go to court and he never showed up. that's a red flag for me. >> the family says he struggled with mental illness and did not receive proper care. they've now decided to hire an attorney who claims authorities are stone walling. the sheriff's office is not responding to those specific claims, only saying they will not release further details because it is an active investigation. well, happening now, a historic strike bringing motor city to a stand still, big three auto workers protesting after walking off the job at midnight. this is the first ever simultaneous strike to hit america's longest standing auto companies, united auto workers are demanding a 40% pay hike, pensions, and the return of retiree health care, the white house says president biden will deliver remarks on the contract negotiations sometime day. today in the bay's jay gray is

the east coast governor of maine, declaring a state of emergency. this is ahead of the arrival of hurricane lee. it's expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and high surf to other states in the new england region as well. >> meteorologist kari hall is tracking the path of this storm. kari, where and when is this going to make landfall if she. >> it's been moving so slowly. we've been talking about hurricane lee for a very long time now and we are still seeing this off the coast, and it is remaining very large and well organized system, this shows you the wind field as we are expecting the wind speeds anywhere from 38 to 50 miles per hour to move into the maine area, but it looks like it does have a more direct impact to nova scotia over the next few days. this was moving to the north at about 16 miles per hour, still a category 1, but it is most likely going to become a tropical storm, and then post tropical as it moves into those cooler waters off the coast of maine and nova scotia over the

next few days as it makes a curve off towards the north and east. this is something we've been watching for quite a while, and will have bigger impacts heading into tomorrow and sunday. taking a look at the forecast for today with our high temperatures around the bay area remaining nice and comfortable, just slightly warm for those inland areas, reaching into the upper 80s in livermore and santa rosa today, reaching 84 degrees. so we'll talk about the weekend coming up, mike, you have a crash on highway 37? >> yeah, in the north bay. now, this is typically where we see slowing westbound, that would be over here near mare island, it's eastbound with a crash reported around fresh air bridge, doesn't that sound refreshing, unless you're involved in a crash. no injuries reported there but that is going on for the commute to the north bay. another clash in its final clearing stages south, 680 approaching that merger with 242, shouldn't be a problem. clearing any second now.

good friday morning, the time is 5:13, we take a look at walnut creek. a mostly cloudy start and temperatures in the low 60s. we're headed up to about 80 degrees, so overall it's really comfortable again today. and we do have cooler temperatures in our weekend forecast. so we'll take a look at that, and what's ahead, it's coming up in the full micro climate forecast. >> we had a good number of headlights here through fremont. it moves slowly at the limit out of hayward where we have the crash to the shoulder at 92 down here past tesla with headlights in towards silicon valley. we'll show you the build in the east bay starting soon. watch to see if the sensors have changed in the next few. well, wall street is set to open mostly higher following red yesterday's rally.

the dow jumped 331 points, or about 1%. s&p 500 and nasdaq rose nearly the same amount. investors are cheering the successful debut of chipmaker armed holdings, and core producer, price inflation was in line with expectations. doordash will no longer be delivering for the new york stock exchange. instead the company will be trading on the nasdaq. the san francisco-based company is transferring its listing starting september 27th. it will trade under the ticker symbol dash. now, when doordash started trading on the big board back in 2020, it actually bucked the trend of most tech companies by foregoing the nasdaq. well, last month another delivery company instacart made a similar move. whatsapp is denying reports the messaging platform is exploring the idea of incorporating ads in its threads. the financial times reports

teams at meta are discussing whether to show ads in conversations with contacts on the chat screen, but no final decision has been made. the company owns whatsapp. the report also says meta was deliberating whether to charge a subscription fee to keep using the app without ads. in hispanic heritage month kicks off today, and we are celebrating all month long. according to wallet hub one in four businesses are hispanic owned. >> the website is out with its list of best cities for hispanic entrepreneurs, one state, florida takes the top spot. most of those on that list. orlando grabbing the number one spot. miami coming in at number two. the first bay area city to make the list, santa rosa at number 63. now, 200 cities were ranked in all. that report looked at capital, business incubators, and community and lang uage support. florida scored at the top for

low taxation, large hispanic population, and levels of language support. one wallet hub analyst says the bay area can do more to support hispanic entrepreneurs. >> language support is important, language assistance services, translation, interpretation to really help hispanic entrepreneurs overcome language barriers they might be seeing. and then if a city did not yet have business incubators that are hispanic driven. >> for the three largest bay area cities oakland ranked 124, san jose 134, and san francisco 142. >> we've got to get higher on that list. >> i'm surprised by that. i would think it would be higher, but, you know, now we know. >> that's right. >> more work to be done. >> a big part of our culture in the bay area. >> very much so. >> that's right. well, hispanic heritage

month kicks off today. i'm sure a lot of people are looking forward to the long list of events that are coming up. i just wonder, it's also friday for us. >> it's also friday. we have so much going on. and the weather is cooperating. it looks great this weekend. nothing to complain about, but let's get you started with a look at the cloudy view in san francisco this morning. as we're going to have some mist and drizzle there, and starting out with a few clouds in cupertino as you get ready to head out the door. temperatures in the low 60s, lunchtime low 70s, 1:00 at 77 degrees. and low 80s for the afternoon. south bay, san jose reaching 83 degrees, morgan hills reaching 84, going to be a little bit cooler compared to yesterday, but we're still in the upper 80s in livermore and pleasanton, oakland will see a high of 72 degrees. we'll be in the low 60s again

for daly city and half moon bay, redwood city reaching 77 degrees, and in san francisco expect the high to reach 67 downtown, and 63 in ingleside area, mill valley reaching 70 degrees, santa rosa, and much of the north bay seeing temperatures in the low 80s, except for ukiah. we've been keeping an eye to see what's happening with el nino, we are starting to see some of those patterns changing. so el nino is basically warmer than normal, sea surface temperatures for the equatorial pacific. we're seeing the temperatures warming up near peru and the ecuador coast, and this is what we're seeing a signal to trigger some of the weather patterns as we go toward fall and winter, and we are looking at 95% chance of this happening between december and february, which could once again signal how much rain we could see or also how dry it can be. so that's something we're watching. some of the impacts that we do typically see with el nino, some of the trade winds that develop,

and then we see the warm water starting to move across the eastern pacific. it really could go either way. depends where the storm track develops. what we sometimes see with southern california getting a storm pattern setting up right over it that could create some wetter conditions, and then warmer and dryer conditions farther to the north. but just because we do have a strong el nino doesn't mean we'll see a strong signal either way. something we'll have to continue to monitor. as we take a look at our local forecast over the next several days, temperatures in the upper 80s today and then a little bit cooler for tomorrow as well as on sunday, the wind picking up, more clouds in the morning, and then seeing it clearing out, but really beautiful weather for all of the hispanic celebrations going on this weekend, and then we'll see for san francisco, temperatures in the upper 60s, throughout the weekend, and next week. and it is looking friday light out there, mike. >> yes, pretty calm right now. a couple incidents but not affecting the speed sensors as

we see them. there were reports of major injuries for this crash still on the grid but chp, all units have cleared the scene at south 88 and 92. i'm going to say it's just paperwork going on now. we'll continue to follow that. highway 37 #, eastbound, a second crash coming over toward mare island, the eastbound direction, a blip starting eastbound, westbound the commute may have just cued off, tapping of the brakes nothing going on over there for antioch and highway 4. a smooth flow of traffic across the bay bridge in towards san francisco, very nice drive right now, beautiful view and nice travel times here, clear drive from marsh creek to 580, highway 4 at speed, and 580, no major problems but there is that slowing as you're coming out of the pass. back to you. >> thanks, mike. next on "today in the bay" nbc bay area responds. she's complaining about a medical bill mistake, he's

highway 37 out of mare island and vallejo, back to you. >> thanks, mike. today, big three auto workers picketing, after walking off the job at midnight. the historic strike comes saf deadline passed to reach new contracts and the white house says president biden will address the conflict later today. >> "today in the bay" jay gray in detroit this morning with a closer look at the demands. >> reporter: the historic strike, the simultaneous walkout by union workers at all three u.s. auto makers began at midnight here at a ford flant in michigan as well as a plant in both missouri and ohio, workers not able to come to an agreement with the big three auto makers on a new contract. the uaw union chief joining these workers on the picket line. >> we want fair, economic, and social justice for our members, that's what this is all about. and it's a shame. they've drug it out, waited until the last week, so here we are. we've got to do what we've got to do. >> reporter: the union had been

calling for a 40% raise over the next four years, along with a boost to their pension, and the end of temporary employees, the big three automakers said that they would counter with about half of that pay raise, and said that they would work on the pension situation. but the two sites could not reach an agreement, and so now the strike is fully under way, it's a strategy, strikes at different plants across the country. but like at this plant it's not the entire plant, just a division of this plant, it will continue, they say, for the duration of this strike. jay gray, nbc news, detroit. >> thanks a lot, jay. the clock is ticking for 60,000 kaiser permanente workers promising to walk off the job if a new contract agreement is not reached by the end of the month. they announced the results of a strike authorization vote. if employees walk off the job it would likely be the largest health care strike in u.s.

history. kaiser says it is disappointed by the strike vote but it still hopes to reach a deal in time to avert a work stoppage. a man sharing his terrifying experience of being a victim in a violent robbery. nathan ruiz says that -- that man was wearing a construction vest and armed with a tool attacking him last week. this happened on third street in san francisco's bay view as he walked from his car to his home. he says he had surgery this week, and now has stitches in the back of his head. he also lost some teeth, suffered other facial injuries, and the robber stole his wallet, backpack, and phone. but he's just grateful to be alive. >> trying to go to sleep. i can see very clearly everything that would happen -- >> so ruiz says that robber

tried to use his credit card but it was declined. police have not made an arrest. a new proposal in vallejo is raising serious alarm among safety advocates. police plan to stop responding to most alarm calls. now, at a town hall last night department leaders had laid out the situation. on any given shift the average amount of officers is only about half of what it should be. the department says most every alarm call ends up being a false alarm with just a tiny fraction leading to arrests. under a new proposal police would respond only to verified alarms, that include eyewitness reports, or some kind of surveillance. >> any alarm call for service received with no confirmation of an attempted or actual crime in progress will be considered unverified. >> some fear vallejo may be more vulnerable to crime as a result, but the chief says this will free up officers to respond more quickly to violent crime, and it

may be years before the department is fully staffed once again. council members are expected to vote on an ordinance before the end of the year. well, the party's over and all that's left is the big question. where will dreamforce play out next year? >> fantastic, how we doing, dreamforce? >> well, the three-day conference wrapped up last night in san francisco, and this, a highlight reel, posted by sales force ceo mark anyone yop, 40,000 people attended, including tech leaders and hollywood stars, including matthew mchon hay, speck lee and viola davis. governor gavin newsom took stage with a sitdown with benioff. he says the city passed his test and the event went well, it's still unclear dreamforce will be back in san francisco next year.

>> reporter: santa clara street will fill with music and entertainment, cultural performances, low riders, and of course lots of delicious food. this is free and open to the public from 4:00 this afternoon to 11:00 tonight. there are some street closures and parking restrictions, do watch out and make sure that you park where you're supposed to. and this is, again, free. san francisco also hosting a celebration along with a mexican consulate, that event starts at 6:00 tonight in center plaza and is meant to feel like that ceremony that happens in mexico with the president at the national palace where they ring the palace bell. 16th of september kicks off the independence movement, in 19 -- or rather, 1800s when the priest don miguel kostilla called on the crowd to rise up against the spanish crowd. this is a big celebration and it kicks off a month of celebration

beautiful weather all across the bay area, some of the celebrations in san francisco will be happening at the civic center plaza. upper 60s there. we also have the los gatos art and wine festival, 81 on saturday, and upper 70s on sunday. heading to the beach this weekend, check out santa cruz, upper 60s, each day, and morning starting out in the upper 50s. so you may need a jacket for those early-morning walks, but during the middle of the day it's going to be so comfortable and we're also going to see some cooler temperatures from your woods this weekend, outdoor hikes will mainly be in the low 60s for afternoon high, so keeping the jackets on there and along the coastline. taking a look at south lake tahoe for the weekend, if yew going there, it's going to be so nice. mainly some low 70s, but those mornings starting out in the low

40s, so it will be cool for those starts of the day. as we take a look at our forecast around the bay area for today, livermore reaching 88 degrees, and martinez headed for 80 degrees, and 80 in napa, and 84 in santa rosa. we'll take a closer look at this, and what's ahead for the weekend coming up. mike, it's looking friday light at the bay bridge. >> the traffic in the last couple seconds started to show more activity. we see a smooth drive at the bay bridge, approaching the bridge through the maize. in our farther reacher, no major problems. we have unusual slowing north away from the area, so that would be eastbound 80 going into the north bay. i'm watching that. no reports in the area, but highway 37 we expect a little bit of slowing here and we've had a gradual build for highway 4 and pittsburg and bay point. over at lone tree, highway 4 in the brentwood byron area, things are looking a little bit -- sorry, the clayton area, things are looking a little bit slow as

good friday morning to you, it's 5:45, heading over to pleasant hill, as you're getting ready for work, low 60s and mostly cloudy, temperatures are matching where we were yesterday afternoon. it will be a little bit cooler for the weekend, we'll take a look at that forecast coming up in just a few minutes. looking at the span across the bay bridge, those taillights are getting closer together as we travel in towards san francisco. a little slowing on the approach, coming down off of treasure island, we'll check out how things are shaping up, those metering lights should be on at the bay bridge toll plaza in the next couple of minutes. the longest running show in television turns the page this sunday when nbc's kristen welker takes over. and it will make some history in the process. >> welker will be the first person of color to moderate any sunday morning public affairs show. she's also the first woman moderator for "meet the press"

>> this is some video we want to show you, when our own mick inouye was hosting the virtual event and you'll be able to see him there tomorrow night. mike will be back in person, in the flesh, celebration at oakland's marriott city center, organizers are honoring brandon tsai who stopped the mass shooting. he talked to mike and told him how he's actually become more active in working to connect those who are in need of mental health treatment. >> i think what's struggling most in our community is that youths and seniors don't really know how to approach mental health, what is it, how do i get to know more about it, how do i access it? >> the gala will raise funds for aahs to continue its programs, including its assistance for behavioral and mental health issues. great organization there, and great for you to be involved in.

>> it's a long part of the community. we have 15 languages which they have medical professionals who can do these services. in those native languages, and that's just a part of what they offer for medical, behavioral, and mental health, it's a great service. >> i'm glad we're talking about it. the mental health is so important. so many people out there -- >> we're all communities, with open access. >> and sometimes it's been taboo topic for so long, including in the asian community. >> especially, in some cases, yes. well, we've been talking about it all morning, it is the start of hispanic heritage month, it is also friday, we've got that event tomorrow. what's the weather that mike's going to be facing? >> oh, we're going to make sure -- >> tomorrow is amazing. it's going to be a great weekend, the weather has been so nice, a little warm for the valleys but even that's going to come down over the next few days. we take a live look outside in san francisco, we're starting out in the low 60s, and there won't be too much of a change over the next several hours, still in the low 60s, as our high temperatures head for the

low 80s for today, lots gatos expect a high of 84 degrees, and in gilroy reaching the upper 70s. for much of the east bay, upper 80s for antioch, martinez reaching 80 degrees. in fremont, look for a high of 83 there. and then along the coast in the low 60s, redwood city headed for 77 degrees. and upper 60s downtown, the marina district in the low 60s, and for the north bay, reaching 93 in clear lake, and in novato we're going to see a high of 81 degrees. really nice, heads up if you will be traveling, especially over towards the sierra, that we could start to see showers and thunderstorms developing each day from sunday through tuesday, as cooler temperatures move into the bay area. so take a look at livermore. our temperatures going from upper 80s to low 80s tomorrow, and sunday is going to be the most comfortable, upper 70s, and we continue that weather, at least through the start of next week. and mike, you had something going on in san jose. >> yeah, it popped up on the map as i was doing my report right

here, this is the off ramp, may be partially blocked by a disabled vehicle, nothing major, 101 itself is open, and that first slowing we see, just like typical friday, a lighter volume so it doesn't last quite so long. speeds are starting to improve once again but they'll be back for slowing. speeds are recovered from sunol. it's cleared from the overnight road work there, and buildup at the toll plaza but the span of the bay bridge moves smoothly. back to you. >> thanks, mike. fremont police are warning people about scammers posing as police officers. the department getting reports of people going door to door telling homeowners their alarm permits are expired, scammers ask for verification of those permits. police say officers do not go door to door asking for this information, and if someone does show up call fremont police or 911. the start of hispanic heritage month comes the rekindling of a longtime debate. how important is speaking spanish when it comes to being latino?

welcome back to "today in the bay," just in time for the beginning of hispanic heritage month, and you know what, there's a movie out centered on one astronaut's journey to the great beyond. >> i have applied to the space program 12 times and on the verge after giving up after each and every rejection, here i am, you can turn me down again but i'll be standing here again in a year. >> a million miles away, that's the story that tells the story of jose hernandez, the story of one of the only few latino astronauts to go through nasa's space program. hernandez grew up picking produce in the fields of san joaquin valley, that movie based on his auto biography which came out in 2012. it's now streaming on amazon. meanwhile, the first mexican born woman to head to space is describing how she got there.

cattia was born in gad la part a and grew up cleaning houses with her mother. last year her lifelong dream came true when she joined jeff bay soez blue origin space company for the mission to the great beyond. she now works for nasa and she says that she does -- she's not done dreaming just yet. her next goal, to the moon. >> amazing. >> i think she'll make it through. >> absolutely. >> shoot for the moon. >> shoot for the stars. and if you miss that, hit the moon. >> she's shooting for the stars and look where he's going to end up. on the moon. one big debate brewing in the hispanic community, the big question, how important is speaking spanish? a new generation is turning that question on its head, new polling shows slightly fewer than half of u.s. born latinos speak english at home and some of them are occasionally immediate to feel guilty or

embarrassed about it by their peers. a growing movement hopes to change that dynamic. carlos torrez created a card game to help others build a basic vocabulary after struggling with his own lack of spanish fluency. >> growing up i didn't speak that much spanish, mostly because i was trying to fit into the schools i was going to. i heard of the term no sabos, so much more that makes us latinos. >> i don't think it's just in the hispanic community, i think it's all -- in california, how important is it? very important to speak at least two languages. >> i'm learning from my daughter, from dora the explorer. >> that's great, kari. >> yeah, if i start to talk like that, you know why. >> i took a spanish class last year, i'm just trying. >> that's right. >> there you go. >> the "today" will continue our celebration of hispanic heritage, all of that coming up
