lee. >> the storm was downgraded to a cyclone. this is no longer a hurricane, but it is packing hurricane-force winds as it takes aim at millions today. >> angie will have the forecast in a minute. we begin with kathy park in maine. what is happening, kathy? >> reporter: laura, good morning. lee is skirting the coast of maine right now. it is not expected to make a direct hit in the area, but it will be a wet and windy day. we are getting a break from the outer bands. ahead of the storm yesterday, we saw massive waves crashing up and down the coast. marinas pulled out vessels as a precaution and here in the portland area, emergency staffers are assessing the situation and may actually close

up shop depending how the weather plays out the next couple hours. of course in the coastal communities, the biggest concern is beach erosion and flash flooding and power outages. the tropical storm force winds could be expected over the next few hours. looking ahead, it took several days for lee to get here. it is expected to move out this afternoon as itthreatens nova scotia. >> thank you, kathy. >> let's turn to angie lassman. this is still a big size. >> it is a post-tropical cyclone lee. you heard kathy talk about the gusty conditions. look at the cloud cover. that stretches down to new york. the rain from nantucket and

beyond into canada is what people are dealing with. the 80-mile-an-hour winds and we are talking 25 miles an hour with the movement. we are dealing with the tropical storm conditions and we have the tropical storm warning that is up right now for 8 million people. same as it has been for days. we will see it maine to massachusetts today. the system will be out of the picture by tomorrow. that is good news for you. here is the gusts we have seen. you notice offshore at 60 miles an hour off the cape. 43-mile-an-hour winds in nantucket. we will see this track work up to the north and eventually make landfall later today, guys. it will be out of here by the time we get into your sunday afternoon. >> angie, thank you very much. our other big story this morning is thousands of auto workers on strike for the second day with no clear end in sight and it could impact anyone who

drives. nbc's jesse kirsch is outside the plant in wayne, michigan. jesse, good morning. >> reporter: laura, you can hear the horns honking and people on the pick et line. as the strike began, the uaw suspended negotiating with the leadership of the union taking part in the action. best we can tell for now is it appears the automakers and union are still far from compromise. across the rust belt, this morning, thousands of united auto workers are being told to protest on the picket line. with no new deals with the uaw and big three overnight thursday and friday, thedown told 13,000 workers to walk off the job at three plants. jeep owner stellantis in ohio

ohio. >> we want a better contract. >> the plant in st. louis. >> it is fair they pay us back. >> reporter: outside detroit is ford. it laid off 600 non-striking employees saying the walkout in some departments has impacted operations in other parts of the facility. gm said the strike at the missouri plant, a different plant could run out of parts and lead to 2,000 non-striking workers temporarily laid off as soon as next week. >> let's be clear. no one wants a strike. >> reporter: president biden is sending two top aides to detroit to help with negotiations. >> the companies have made significant offers. i believe it should go further to ensure record corporate profits should mean record contracts. >> reporter: the demands are a large pay bump and retiree healthcare. stellantis is disappointed in

the uaw leadership. the ceos of ford and gm say the offers are historic. >> this is a good offer. we want you back. >> reporter: hours after the strike, gm chief mary barra says the consequences of the shutdown could reach beyond the assembly line. >> for every gm job, there are six other jobs associated. >> this is not a small strike. you are taking out 15% of everything they build in the u.s. >> reporter: union leaders rallying supporters as the two sides publicly appear no closer to a deal. if you are trying to buy a new car or current vehicle needs repair, depending on how long this drags on, that could get more p come complicated. we know the vehicles impacted are gm chevy colorado and then

the operation in ohio and in michigan, the bronco and ranger are taking a hit. laura. >> jesse kirsch, thank you. peter, i have to ask about this. the president wants to be pro-union. he has companies on the other hand in three states that he cannot afford to lose in 2024. how does he walk that tightrope? >> this is a tightrope and real-time test for the president's economic agenda. bidenomics. this is the pro-union stand is in his dna. it is his brand. he has been calling for higher wages. you add the transition to the new economy right now. hollywood, the writers are fighting to protect themselves from a.i. and from the communities and automakers world? they are worried about protecting themselves in the electric vehicle era. there are a lot of stakes in the state of michigan right now which is a must-win state for

president biden. >> the longer this goes on, the tougher it is politically for the white house. >> a challenge for sure. now to some other breaking news overnight. the special counsel in the election interference case in washington is asking for a limited gag order to stop him from talking. this comes after mr. trump has made statements attacking prosecutors and even the judge herself. nbc's ali vitali is in washington, d.c. we knew this would come to a head. >> reporter: you are right, laura. the special counsel is asking to narrowly limit former president trump's to talk about the case. if granted, this would include statements he made about the identity of possible witnesses as well as disparaging comments about them or jurors and attorneys. the ask is borne of actions he has taken including the public

statements attacking the citizens of district columbia and court and witnesses. the special counsel's request adding that the remarks can be inflammatory and intimidating. mr. trump reacting in d.c. and on social media attacking the special counsel and process saying they leak, lie and sue and they won't allow me to speak? also calling prosecutors incompetent. trump's team has ten days to respond. the judge could rule any time at the end of september to impose the narrow gag order. big impimplications. >> ali vitali bright in early in washington, d.c. for us. thank you. >> are you the lawyer here. is this gag order enforceable? this guy is running for president. there are a lot of complicating factors. >> this is the thing that happens. you see it in a normal case. it raises first amendment issues.

you never had the case where the person they want to stop talking is the frontrunner for the republican party running to be president. it is extraordinary. more likely, you will see the judge give a stern warning. she already has told him to stop talking in ways to prejudice the jury. there are concerns of safety. there have been threats of fbi members and prosecutors and judge herself. she will haul everyone in and say cool it down. >> we will watch it. we want to bring in a familiar face for you this saturday morning. our friend kristen welker, the anchor emerita. she sat down with former president trump. kristen, it is starting tomorrow. >> reporter: good morning. it is great to be with you. thank you for having me. you are right, i did sit down with former president trump. his first network interview since leaving office. we covered a wide range of

issues. i asked about one of the top issues for voters which is the issue of age. >> what do you make of the age issue? should there be an age limit? >> i took a test three years ago. the doctors said and it was in front of doctors and a big deal at walter reed. i aced t. i got everything right. i'm all for testing. frankly, i think testing would be a good thing. a lot of people say it is not constitutional to do it. i would be for testing to make sure lot of people say that can happen. >> what do you say to people who say it is time for a new generation of leaders? >> it is always time for a new generation. some of the greatest world leaders have been in their 80s. i'm not anywhere near 80, by the

way. biden's not too old. i think he's incompetent. that's a bigger problem. i don't think 80 is old. i know people who are 89. i know a better than who is 94 and 95 who is 100%. bernie marcus, home depot. he has been amazing for so many years. he is 95 years old. it's really a level of competency. not the age. >> you will be in your 80s if you are reelected. does that concern you? >> i will be at the end. no, because my father lived much longer than that. my mother lived longer than that. >> this is interesting, kristen, it follows mitt romney. he said he is not running for re-election again. he said it is time for a new generation of leaders. both trump and biden would be in their 0s in another term. what did you take?

>> reporter: i learned president trump doesn't like the issue of age. he doesn't want to talk about it. it was nnotable. i don't think biden is too old. he is incompetent. he doesn't want this election framed around the issue of age. age is in focus right now on capitol hill. our leaders on capitol hill, peter, as you noted as senator mitt romney not running for re-election. he was facing a tough road. he is a trump critic. he did call for a new generation of leaders. i think that echos what we are hearing from voters all across the country. if there is a potential rematch despite the fact that these two men do not want to be talking about the issue of age, i think it will continue to be in focus for voters. >> kristen, you got the former president on your first show. you are also gearing up to cover other topics. you are taking over "meet the press." this is wild. this is an institution. i cannot imagine anyone better

millions of dollars from the state to address retail theft and other crimes. the city has seen spikes in crime across the board. officials are scrambling to find out what went wrong. community leaders including the naacp are calling the mistake a deadly failure for the city. >> in the city at a crucial time when lawlessness is way out of control, as far as the city of oakland is concerned and then you missed a golden opportunity to get millions of dollars to get the license plates readers and cameras, more police officers. we could get everything. then you blow it? >> mayor sheng thao said the city is reviewing what happened and looking for ways to ensure it does not happen again and the south bay san jose fire investigators are looking into the cause of the two alarm fire not far from the san jose flea market were two people were inside of the home with flames broke out just after 4:30 yesterday afternoon. the smoke could be seen for miles but fortunately they both
