mexican independence day celebrating the country's independent from spain. a lot to celebrate today. thank you for starring it with us. cynthia joins us with a look another our microclimate forecast. lots of clouds. >> it's one of those mornings you feel like just curling up in bed. i don't blame you. all of the cloud cover is blanketing the majority of the bay area from san francisco down to the south bay as well. we're starting with temperatures mostly in the 50s and the 60s. if you have any plans to get outside today, don't be afraid of this cloud cover. you're going to watch it pull back to the coastline by around 11:00. giving us a lot of sunshine for the inland valleys we're going to warm uply. a few 80s are on the map for our daytime highs. i'll guide you through all these temperatures. look ahead for tomorrow and the full week ahead. back to you. >> thank you. we begin in the east bay right now where one city is facing a crisis in its police

forces. antioch needs to hire 50% more officers, and now it's offering ab inisn'tive. a dplr 30,000 bonus. as today in the bay reports, the city wants to ensure they are recruiting officer who is will help rebuild broken trust between the police department and the community. >> the first question that i have is do they want to work for this city, this community and serve this community, or are they just chasing a hiring bonus. >> reporter: the councilman knows the hiring process. as a former lieutenant. at this week's meeting, he voted in favor of extending a program offering $30,000 bnuses to new hires in the police department. the department has 31 officers patrolling the street. the staffing issues continue to be a problem with investigations, by both the fbi and district attorney's offices, which uncovered racist text messages between officers and produced several indictments. >> 31 is not the number we need. we need to probably be more than

double that number. >> reporter: but agencies like the alameda police department are experiencing success offering $75,000 bonuses to new hires. it's attracting hundreds of applicants. but the police chief says it's just one of many recruiting tools. >> what really sell it for me is after i have that conversation with them and we're getting somebody committed to public safety, constitutional policing and is looking to move the profession forward. >> reporter: the councilman knows it's a dire situation for antioch pd, but wants hiring standards to remain high to make sure officers are fully invested in the job. >> i want to make sure we have a police department that the city can rely on. i want to make sure that somebody is not coming just for that signing bonus. >> reporter: the councilman is going to monitor this incentive program over the next year, but he says if it doesn't impact hiring, he wants to discontinue the program.

we have an update in the racist texting scandal. four black murder subpoenas are challenging their arrests by officers involved in that scandal. and now an expert is testifying on their behalf. yesterday a race expert from uc irvine testified in court kpauring the racest text messages with the dehumanization of black people lynched in the days of slavery. that expert testified on behalf of those murder suspects who is are challenging their arrest based on the racial justice act. >> racial justice act is this incredibly powerful new tool that we're still learning how it can best be used. but the fact that it has opened up the ability of folk who is have experienced racial bias in their cases to bring that out into the light is incredible. it's powerful. it's revolutionary. >> the four men are charged with two alleged gang-related murders

that happened back in 2021 in antioch. defense attorneys hope the judge will dismiss all of those gang enhancements and reduce their charges. alameda district attorney pamela price announced she's charging two teenagers in connection with a recent shooting at oakland skyline high school. the shooting happened last week. thankfully, no one was hurt, but it did triggerer a lockdown. the school was closed the following day so police could investigate. a third teen also in custody is facing charges after a gun was found at his home the day after the shooting. if convicted, all three teens face between three to four years in prison. a troubling investigation on the peninsula where a redwood city man is accused of sexually assaulting multiple children. he was arrested yesterday. investigators fear there are more victims and are encouraging them to come forward. anyone with information is urged

to contact the san mateo county sheriff's office. there's a new arrest in the case of a missing fairfield woman. mark randall is the boyfriend. police took him into custody thursday night in sacramento. brown was last seen on august 20th at the fairfield home they shared. neighbors last saw her getting out of her car and walking into the home. police say with information provided to detectives, they do believe she is dead. they are calling it a homicide investigation. we're going to turn now to the longest running show in television. it is turning the page tomorrow when nbc's kristen welker takes over "meet the press." janelle wang spoke with her. >> kristen welker takes the helm as moderator of "meet the press." she will become the first black

journalist to moderate a sunday public affairs program, and only the second woman behind the show's creator martha roundtree to moderate. the first interview, former president trump. joining me now is kristen welker. thank you for being here. you're taking over the longest running show on television. what does this mean to you? >> thank you so much for having me. it's so great to be with you. this is a professional dream come true. it's a huge honor, and it's also a huge responsibility. it's one that i take incredibly seriously. you want to make sure that i am building on the legacy of this great show, and also staying true to its core principles, which can is about holding our elected officials to account for their words, for their actions, making sure that we are bringing new information, important and relevant information to our viewers every sunday.

it is a huge responsibility and challenge. i am so excited to get to work. i've been working on this very hard with the incredible team here all summer long. we are ready to get going. >> your first interview with former president trump. we have seen some clips. you have interviewed him before many times. what was your biggest take away from this one on one interview? >> we discussed a wide range of topics. everything from the economy to the legal challenges he's facing, abortion, as well as foreign policy. when we talked about his legal challenges, he was quite defiant. i asked if he worries about going to jail. he said he doesn't. he said he's wired differently. and i thought that that was quite revealing. this is also someone who feels quite confident in their lead in the polls. you can tell that he is relishing that big lead. he's looking forward to the

general election already, even though he knows he needs to win the nomination first. there were some really significant moments of this interview. i hope that our viewers will have that take away as well. it's also worth noting we're going to have a very extensive panel discussion to break down what we heard in the interview. >> interesting. you interview sod had many people from both sides of the aisle. who would you like to invite on to the show? >> well, i would like to invite everyone on to the show. i just the to make sure that we have a diverse set of voices from all across the political spectrum from our elected officials here in washington to the candidates who are on the campaign trail. i want to make sure we're talking to our community leaders, the folks who impact our political discourse, and make sure that we're really drilling deep, digging deep into all of the issues that we're

welcome back. it's 7:13. good morning to walnut creek. a beautiful look outside. it looks clear with that perfect cloud cover. we'll have your mild climate. we have a followup to the giant sink hole being repaired in san francisco's hollow naubd. the city says it could take up to six weeks or more to completely repair it. here's what the hoel looks like after a water main broke. it caused the road to collapse at green and fillmore streets. flooding damaged several homes and businesses as crews work, they say the block between green and union will remain closed

from all traffic and street parking. the uaw has launched an historic strike against all three of detroit's biggest auto makers. in fact, it's the first time in history that uaw has walked out of all three of america's unionized auto makers at the same time. more than 13,000 members of the uaw walked off the job yesterday at three. this comes after auto makers failed to reach a deals with the union by a thursday night dead looib. the two sides were reportedly far apart on issues like pay rises, hours and sick time when the talks broke down. las vegas casinos are still scrambling after cyber attacks. >> you can put money into the ma seens here but you can't get money to come out. >> that is a longer detailing

the problems in vegas. some slot machines are down completely. in other cases people are getting paid their winnings by hand. the checking system are also impacted. that's causing long lines at various properties. mgm and caesars confirmed being hit this week. the fbi is now investigating its likely both companies were hit by the same cyber criminals. so in case you're wondering what the hackers got ahold of and what they want, in the case of cedar arises, we are told the data includes social security and driver's license numbers for customers who signed up for the caesars loyalty program. back here locally, sick singer ed sheeran is coming to the bay area tonight. a live look at levi's stadium where he will be playing. to set up the stage, sheeran is

is back. dorgt the chronicle, the ocean beach event changed veues because of federal regulation. so it's happening today at the alameda county fairgrounds. they get to compete in fun competitions like races and a costume contest. gates open at 10:00 this morning. time to check in for a look at our forecast. a good day for dogs to get out. >> i think so. they are so cute with their sunglasses. they will definitely need them as they make their way into their inland valleys. we have a day that's going to start with a lot of that cloud overout in san francisco. and be pretty stubborn to mix out even as we go on there looking fwords 2:00. we're still seeing that cloud cover hanging on. temperatures only in the upper 60s. what's happening this weekend that's making our temperatures just drop a few degrees we're in between cooler weather to the northwest and warm temperatures

hanging on in southern california and the desert southwest. so that's cooling our temperatures down a little bit. hanging on to that stubborn cloud cover at the coast. a little breezy as we go into the next couple days. hour by hour for you, if you have plans to get outside middle of the day, we're seeing the fog hanging on to the coastline. maybe some drizzle towards point ray. most of us still seeing that beautiful clearing through our inland valleys. as we go into the afternoon, still hanging on to that cloud cover through half-moon bay. as we go into tonight, we'll se. more of those clouds will sting around for sunday. watch how some of those tropical high clouds will move in as we go into sunday afternoon, which will also drop the temperatures a little bit. let's get you a check of our microclimate temperatures for today. 60s along the water. low to mid-70s in oakland. 78 for you in dublin. as we make our way into areas of concorde and fairfield, low 80s there.

who fly on planes. >> good morning. i promise to connect the dots here. first, please welcome ken morris to california. he and his wife just moved here from chicago. thaw asked for our help, because an important piece of electronics did not make the move. >> we downsized tremendously. we had next to nothing to move. >> enough stuff to stuff one of those shipping cubes. but a realization. >> i forgot to pack the router. >> that internet router. no worry. ken and his wife were booked to fly here. he still had room in his carry on bag. but when he got to california, a mystery. the router was missing. ken says the only time his bag was out of control. >> it was flagged. >> it was at tsa check point in chicago. ken said an agent searched the suitcase but never said anything about taking the router. >> i was told it was all good.

>> reporter: tsa check points are a black hole. the tsa says approximately 90,000 to 100,000 items at check points each month. the agency says it holds items for 30 days after that, it sells them. the proceeds pay down a tiny bit of the huge national debt. ken contacted the tsa. low and behold, it found his router in lost and found. and tsa would give it back. but -- >> come and get it within 30 days or it will be disposed. >> reporter: come and get it in chicago. what typically is a $350 flight, according to google, to pick up a $100 router. >> think they didn't realize the flight from chicago to here was permanent. >> they believed the tsa botched the search and was responsible for shipping his router back to hum. but the tsa expected him to pay for chip shipping. so ken contacted us. and our team contacted the tsa. it took action. >> i get e-mails from the person

and please verify your address. i said, you guys are good. >> the tsa shipped ken his router at no cost to him. we asked the tsa for a statement about what happened, but we didn't receive one. the rep did say the most important thing when something is missing is to immediately report it to the tsa so they can look at closed circuit television to determine what happened. which ken did. he has a word of advice for all air travelers. if a tsa agent searches your bag, keep your eyes on it before you put your shoes and belt back on. >> put the clothes on later and just so extend and watch and see what they are doing. >> say you can't see what the agent is doing the whole time. ask them what did you take out then verify your stuff is become in your bag. a few seconds to save yourself time and heart ache. ken contacted us online.

the wind pattern there. possibly some showers. we'll talk about that in the full forecast. back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, police in the east bay are investigating a homicide. oakland police say there are two scenes linked to one deadly shooting. one is at 12th and brush streets. that's where they found this bmw ritz theed with bullet holes on the side of the car. the second scene was just two blocks away on 12th and fill better streets. we reached out to police for word on any arrests. also new overnight in the east bay, police arrested a driver they found asleep at the wheel. it happened around 1:00 this morning in pittsburgh. the chp tells us the man was asleep in the car parked on the highway off ramp at railroad avenue. there was a firearm visible in his passenger seat. officers tell us it took an hour to get the driver to respond.

they were forced to break the passenger one doe to remove him and the firearm from the car. no word on the charges that man will face. there is new trouble inside a police department. the substitute placed their police chief on paid leave while it investigates claims that he violated department policy. he has been chief since 2021. in the meantime, kevin hart, a 35-year veteran, will fill in as interim chief. he has served as chief at two other police agencies. we're going to turn now to hurricane lee downgraded from hurricane to post tropical cyclone it's on track to move into canada today, specifically western nova scotia and southern new brunswick. lee is expected to bring heavy rain, high winds and flooding. people are urged to stock up on food and water. there's a sliver of good news in the wake of maui wildfires. the number of deaths has been

reduced from 115 to 97. the hawaii governor announced that 18 fewer people died in the flames that destroyed the historic town of lahaina. the original higher count is a result of some victim's dna samples being counted more than once. though the governor is warning the death toll could go up again. 31 people are still unaccounted for and have not been identified as either dead or missing. become here locally, san jose fire investigators are looking into the cause of a house fire not far from the san jose flee market. two people were in the home when flames broke out just after 4:30 yesterday afternoon. the smoke could be seen for miles. fortunately both got out safely. no one else was hurt. we're going to go now to a multimillion dollar mistake in oakland. it has leaders asking if the city is capable of getting a

handle on crime. we have learned that the city of oakland missed a deadline to apply for millions of state dollars to address retail theft and other crimes. the mistake comes as the city has seen a spike in crime. officials scramble to find out what went wrong, community leaders including the naacp are calling the mistake a devastating failure for the city. >> the city in lawlessness is way out of control. and then you admit the golden opportunity to get millions of dollars to get the license plate readers and the cameras and more police officers and get everything. then you blow it. >> the mayor says the city is reviewing what happened and is looking for ways to ensure this does not happen again. 7:35. history will be made tomorrow when kristen welker is moderaor

biden returns for the apex summit in san francisco. last night marked the first sunset night market in san francisco. a way to bring people back to a merchant corridor that's faced some challenging years. the night market was on irving between 20th and 23rd avenues. it was strategically placing vendors in the closed street to not block existing brick and mortar shops the hope was to yield new customers for businesses and show them the city is looking after them after crime in the area. >> the challenges here on irving street is crime. a lot of businesses are being broken into and graffiti and getting people to come back and patronize the businesses. >> the goal is to host a night market once a month, rotaing them throughout the sunset district. as we have mentioned, it's hispanic heritage month. there are a lot of festivities across the bay area. hundreds already gahered in san

starting the day with some patchy fog hanging around the coast. some drizzle out there as well. as we bo into 12:00 on your saturday, we're going to see it hanging around the immediate coastline. but better clearing for the north bay, east bay and down to the south bay. we'll watch the storms develop over the sierra. if you have plans to head to tahoe, be careful of the changes in the weather pattern. we're tracking some rain into parts of lake county farther north. but the rest of the bay area is going to see the clouds ushering back into this afternoon. dropping the temperatures a little bit. for our sunday plans, those clouds will stick around just a little bit more. notice that high cloud cover that rolls around 3:00 in the afternoon. dipping those changes down just a little bit. what can we expect as we take it to the temperatures for today? upper 60s along the water. 78 for you today as well as in dublin. and a very few spots that get into the 80s today and tomorrow. we're going to dip the temperatures down into the upper

70s for a lot of us in the bay area. only 80s on the board now is 81 in fairfield. 80 in morgan hill. we hinted at some changes in the long range forecast. the climate prediction meaning we can start to see some above average development in that moisture. now this model still is a few days away. we need to keep an eye on how this trough develops, bringing in more of that cloud cover and that moisture. it's still a few days out, but we'll continue to keep an eye on this as it could be some of the early showers into what will be the final days of summer early fall. as we take it to the inland forecast, temperatures don't stray away too much from the 70s and 80s. we'll keep it cool at the coast with 60s in san francisco all week long. >> it looks nice. thank u. yo

number two. the first bay area city to make that list is santa rosa at number 63. 200 cities were ranked in all. now the report looked at criteria including capital, business incubators and community and language support. florida scoring the highest for levels of language support. one analyst stays the bay area could do more to support hispanic entrepreneurs. >> language support is also huge here. so making sure that the city provides language assistance services, translation, interpretation, it's really helped entrepreneurs overcome language barriers they might be seeing. if it a city does not have business incubators and acceleraors that are really hispanic driven. >> i'm sure you're wondering the three largest cities. how do they rank? oakland came in at 124. san jose, 134.

morning in pittsburgh. the chp found the man asleep in the car parked on the highway off ramp at railroad avenue. they say there was a firearm visible in his passenger seat. officers tell us it took them an hour to get him to respond. they broke the window to remove him and the firearm from the car. no word on the charges that man will face. as we have been reporting, it's hispanic heritage month. there are many ways to celebrate. in fact, today marks mexican independence day. last night people as cross the bay area came out to celebrate what's known as the mexican independence day. when the town was called to rise up against the salesmanish spanish crown. today they celebrate to kick off hispanic heritage month. tomorrow redwood city is hosting their celebration. many other celebrations of all latin culture are happening this
