week with us. >> pats are 0-2. they're starting it off that way. >> and that one went down to the wire. good night for sunday night football. we've got breaking news this morning. five americans detained in iran, being released as part of a high stakes prisoner swap. >> it involves the return of five iranians detained in the united states and unfreezes $6 billion of iranian money. >> josh letterman is standing by at doha international airport. what's the latest? >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning. a qatari plane flying those released prisoners is on a two-hour flight to doha after leaving iran. a senior diplomat briefed on the exchange tells me on board are two relatives of the americans. after a brief stop in doha, they will begin the journey home. a year's long nightmare appears

to be becoming to an end, expected to be freed. the americans expected to spend just a few hours on the ground in qatar before being flown to the u.s. and starting the long road to rovery. -- recovery. for the families, the release couldn't come quickly enough. >> all of our families have been destroyed. >> the prisoned were both arrested in 2018. iran accused all three of espionage and locked them up. the two other americans have not been identified. the delicate deal took years to negotiate. two diplomats tell nbc news the iranians and americans never came face to face. in exchange, the biden administration releasing five iranian prisoners and unfreezing $6 billion under u.s. sanctioning in south korea. republicans blasting president biden for what they call a ransom payment, arguing iran will use the money against the attacks against the u.s. and its allies.

>> they will use the money against the u.s. in the interest of iran. >> reporter: the biden administration insists iran can only use the $6 billion on humanitarian goods like food and medicine, with the u.s. treasury department approving each transaction. >> i'm happy to take any criticism. for that, i view it as job one, to do everything i can to bring americans home. >> reporter: after the americans arrive here in doha, they're expected to make a brief medical checks. the good news is all of them are set to be in good health. they're not expected to stay long before boarding the flight to the united states. their families at home eager to welcome them and put this dark chapter behind them. >> all right. josh letterman on the ground there. thank you. >> let's bring in keir simmons. good morning. when we heard $6 billion, i thought maybe we had heard it wrong. that's a lot of money. where is that money coming from? >> people will be stunned by

that number. that number's been in career as a result of oil sales. iran hasn't been able to get a hold of it. now it will be able to, but in a limited way. we're being told it will be held by qatar and controlled by the u.s. and only used for humanitarian purposes. iran's president told nbc just a week ago that the money was unjustly frozen and that iran will decide how the money is spent. that will be one of the controversies over this because, remember, the background to all of this is president trump when he was president pulling out of the iran nuclear deal, freezing iranian money, putting sanctions on iran. an election year, so this will be perhaps not the biggest election issue, but an issue. >> so the iran nuclear deal fell apart. this is a concern about iran highly enriching uranium. obviously we've seen iran's actions on behalf of russia in

ukraine. this is the background now to this deal. how does it fit together? >> that's right. by the way, this is a big move in a big week. are we going to hear from them from the un general assembly? you're right, josh talked about slow negotiations taking place. there has been a sense of a slow-burning fuse with iran with the enrichment of iranian with iran selling drones allegedly to russia. one argument could be anything you could do to destabilize that relationship between russia and iran, that's a good thing. another painful aspect of the timing, too, of course. we just passed the anniversary of the death of the woman who was killed in iran that the terrible, terrible ruthlessly put down protests after that. people will say that timing wasn't right. and the critics will be saying if you hand over prisoners, you simply encourage a country to take more prisoners. >> we're watching this unfolding as we speak this morning.

thank you, keir. also the united workers strike is entering its fourth day. the two sides failing to agree to new contracts over the weekend, and the consequences are starting grow. jesse, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. negotiations are back up and running, but still no deals. however, there were positive signs over the weekend. despite the fact that as you can see, there are still people picketing outside this ford plant, it appears the uaw and this company are making progress. the united auto workers strike against the big three rolls into day four, this morning signs of hope. the uaw writing on saturday, we had reasonably productive conversations with ford. >> doesn't that seem like a long way to come in a positive direction? >> yeah, it does. they also tell us that it's not an great yet.

it could be as reasonable as possible, but is there an agreement for us to continue to provide for our families. >> reporter: the company writing ford remains committed to reaching an agreement that rewards our employees and protects ford's ability to invest in the future. general motors also restarted negotiations with the union. while more bargaining with stellantis is expected today. the union and jeep maker bickered over the weekend. >> we're just a number to them. they don't care. >> reporter: the stalemate impacting more than those on strike. ford says it laid off roughly 600 non-striking workers because of the walk-out. >> the companies have made some significant offers, but i believe they should go further to ensure that record contract means new contracts. >> reporter: biden says top aides are coming to detroit. but the white house is not part of negotiations. the uaw is still pushing for a 40% wage increase, among other demands. the big three all say they made four offers. the union has countered, but is

keeping quiet on details. tens of thousands of livelihoods hanging in the balance. what is it like to try to support a family of four on what you are making right now? >> you can't. you have to have dual incomes in the house. everybody has to be pitching in. >> reporter: uaw says what comes next depends on the big three. >> if they don't come to the table and get things resolved, then we'll keep amping that up. >> reporter: that could mean targeting more plants, possibly expanding the strike. something else we're keeping an eye on. the teamsters say they will be sharing an important update tonight on the uaw strike. but already that other major union saying, quote, teamsters don't cross picket lines. >> thank you. let's move to the intense manhunt for suspects in the fatal shooting of a los angeles county sheriffs deputy. authorities describing it as an ambush attack.

>> good morning. we've learned a person of about has been detained in the shooting death, their own surveillance video captured a vehicle of interest pulling aside his patrol car before speeding away. now they're looking for a suspect and a motive. this morning, grief and outrage over the tragic loss of 30-year-old l.a. county sheriffs deputy ryan clinkunbroomer. did the deputy have words? >> our deputy never even had a chance. >> reporter: authorities say he was ambushed and killed saturday evening while stopped at a red light in his patrol car near the palmdale sheriff's station. authorities hoping they will be able to use the surveillance video captured by their own cameras to catch his killer. it shows a car pulling alongside his patrol vehicle before speeding away. law enforcement officials

pleading for information on a dark toyota corolla they are calling a vehicle of interest. >> check your cameras. that could be the missing link to the information we need. >> reporter: investigators sharing they believe this was a targeted act. >> for no apparent reason, somebody decided to shoot and murder him. i'm assuming at this point because he was in uniform. >> this was an execution. we will find who did this. you can run, but you can't hide. >> reporter: within hours of his death, a massive show of support. fellow law enforcement officers escorting his flag-draped coffin in an overnight procession that temporarily shut down local highways. what was he known for around the office? >> just an extraordinary young man of integrity, would do anything for anybody. >> reporter: the 30-year-old had just gotten engaged to be married last week. his mother posting on instagram, we are so excited to add to our family.

fired leronne armstrong. last week things came to a head when the mayor suggested commissioners are dragging their feet. she's considering a state of emergency if a short list cannot be assembled by the end of the year. commissioners are expected to provide an updated timeline. happening today in san francisco, israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, is scheduled to meet with tech titan elon musk. it comes in the wake of recent controversy generated since musk bought twitter. some civil rights groups accuse musk of allowing anti-semitism to flourish on the site now known as x. musk denies the allegations and has threatened to sue for defamation. we spoke with protesters who gathered at mineta airport in san jose ahead of netanyahu's arrival. some said that they are standing there with their country to show the prime minister his laws affect israelis around the world. let's check the forecast for this monday morning with meteorologist kari hall. >> we're going to quickly see any clouds we have this morning

in the shark bite capitol of the -- capital of the world. it's lived up to its name. this summer, that is five reported incidents now in less than five months, including what happened to mark somerset who came face to face with a shark who bit him in the face we have to warn you, some of these images are graphic the daytona beach area boasts some of the best surfing anywhere in the world. but for the south carolina native it the lure of the waves came at a heavy cost. >> the pain is still here. it still hurts. >> reporter: he's reeling for a severe bite to the face, requiring 18 stitches. he never saw the shark coming after finishing a wave and jumping off his board. >> i felt this pressure on my face it felt like a bear trap i think he rips down a little bit. sharks have five rows of teeth, so he tore me up pretty bad. he let go. >> aerial shots showed a number of the highly feared fish in the

water after the attack he spotted around 10 the day before >> i spoke to my girlfriend and i was like, it's crazy all these sharks here. something is going on. i don't know if it was intuition or something, but i felt like i was going to get bit. >> it continues what's been a highly active summer for shark scares from the shores of long island to the florida panhandle according to trackingsharks.com, there have been 32 bites in the u.s. through mid-september, more than half in florida and six in new york just in new smyrna beach that makes five attacks in less than four months, including brandon, who sustained this scary bite to his ankle. still, he acknowledges he's entering the shark's environment. he has a hunch what triggered the bite, his gold chain. >> he thought i was a fish, the scales on the fish and he grabbed me because of that i'm almost 100% certain of that. >> as to whether he will get
