burning near oregon and the border there. >> meteorologist kari hall is joining us this morning. she's been monitoring it all. i talked about this being felt throughout the bay area. >> absolutely. and it's not just one area that's seeing it worse than other areas. we can all smell it this morning and it has been pretty bad. but we are also seeing it in the unhealthy range, which has changed quite a bit since this time yesterday. so we are going to continue to need to limit our time outside, limit that exposure, as we're seeing a change in the weather conditions that's bringing that smoke directly down into the bay area. the fires have been burning for weeks now and the smoke is coming in from oregon, northern california, but yesterday the concentration got so bad that we thought the fire was a lot closer. as we go into the next couple of days between friday and saturday, another low will be pushing in and that's going to bring in some fresher breezes. but in the meantime, we do still have to deal with drifts of smoke coming in and plumes of it at times getting a lot more

school can only fly the flags for the united states and the state of california. this issue originally arose in june when the sunol glen school flew a pride flag in celebration of pride month. the school superintendent found the board's decision last week disturbing and says that 90% of her staff supports flying the gay pride flag. now parents are pushing to recall two trustees who voted to disallow flying the flag on campus. one of those board members, linda hurley, released a statement last week explaining her decision, quote, my vote to fly only the american and state flags was not meant to disparage the lbgtqia community, but to legally protect our small school from legal action for breaking the supreme court decision shurtleff versus the city of boston. hurley was referring to the supreme court case that found the city of boston violated the first amendment because it allowed some groups to display their flag over city hall, but refused to fly a christian

entrapping some of that smoke. this morning we're going to see the worst of the air quality. there may be some slight improvements later on this evening once that ocean breeze picks up, but unfortunately there's going to be another plume of that wildfire smoke drifting in, getting trapped in that marine layer and that inversion layer as well, as we see a lot of that smoke coming in from those fires coming in from northern california, so you're smelling it, but the fire is not really that close to you. then we take a look at our forecast for today, it's a shame because it feels so nice outside. our temperatures are a lot lower, even lower than normal, reaching into the upper 70s and low 80s, with martinez reaching 77. we'll see a high of 73 today in san mateo. san francisco back into the 60s for today. sonoma will see a high of 80, and 86 in ukiah. then for the north bay, we'll be watching it because there will be a fire weather watch most likely issued starting late

tomorrow evening. that may be upgraded to a red flag warning if the winds get high enough to cause a fire that could begin to spread quickly. then we go through the forecast, we've been talking about the potential of rain next week, with potentially a first atmospheric river for the pacific northwest. some of that rain may make it into the bay area next tuesday or wednesday, and that could bring in some decent amounts of rainfall. some of the models are already picking up on the yellow-green arrow. our first day of fall comes over the weekend. temperatures only a few degrees warmer, reaching into the low 80s, while san francisco will continue to see breezy winds and highs in the upper 60s. mike, the commute looking a lot more like a tortoise. >> it's moving well, but slowly, steadily building, more cars at the berkeley curve. toward the toll plaza, it is
