5:00 am
right now at 5:00, hazy skies sticking around, as the weekend nears. but things are expected to clear up. we have live team coverage on an expanded spare the air alert we're now monitoring. we also have the extended closure for a major south bay freeway. we'll talk about how long is closure is going to be and how long the detours are.
5:01 am
we'll talk about which options you should take. making it in the bay was supposed to get easier when real estate took a downturn, but not so fast. the new signs real estate here is already back on the up-and-up. this is "today in the bay." a very good friday morning to you. 5:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. let's get ready for our top story, poor air quality, something continuing to blanket parts of the bay area. >> meteorologist kari hall has a look at maybe when we can see hazy skies start to clear. >> it has been unhealthy for people who have any kind of health conditions, and the children and elderly having to limit time outside. really, for all of us, we shouldn't be breathing in this amount of smoke we're seeing, and it continues this morning as wer seeing some of the worst of the air quality in san rafael,
5:02 am
oakland, as well as san jose. we're seeing moderate air quality, it has improved slightly for sebastopol, but in the range of moderate air quality, and we're seeing it in san francisco as well. still, the smoke coming down from the complex of fires farther to the north, and it will be slightly better than yesterday, as we work our way toward some improved air quality. but it still will be very hazy and unhealthy for some people throughout today. we'll get a look ahead to the weekend forecast and what to expect in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. we turn to "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab in san francisco. like many cities, now dealing with the extended spare the air alert. >> the air quality certainly doesn't seem to be holding back for those niners fans. >> reporter: no, they may be waking up a little tired from cheering last night and possibly a sore throat, laura, and marcus, because of the air that
5:03 am
they breathed in while they were at levi's stadium. but if that is the symptom they're dealing with, you can consider that escaping a tackle, if you want to think of it in sports terms. there are more serious symptoms that can belong for those who are part of the sensitive respiratory group. here are the symptoms to watch out for. you want to make sure that you are not short of breath or feeling any chest pain and dizziness. dr. peter chen hong says some symptoms can have longer-term effects. >> people may have what seems like an asthma flare in the short term. in the long term, over a longer period of time, we would expect impacts on heart disease, brain disease, as well as some chronic lung diseases. >> reporter: those are some serious symptoms to watch out
5:04 am
for, serious effects. dr. peter added the risk goes up the longer you are outdoors, especially for those with respiratory concerns. air quality improved yesterday from wednesday, but as you mentioned, smoky skies are still around and will continue today. some caltrans workers were out along highway 24 yesterday and the agency says it is closely monitoring the air quality so that they can advise their crews working out in the fields accordingly. if you are out working or if you are outdoors today, you may want to consider picking up a mask. i know it was mentioned that some niner fans last night were wearing masks when they were going into the stadium. if you are able to limit your time outdoors, as we've been talking about all week, that is a good idea to do so, especially with the alert extended until today. >> hopefully it's clearing now for the weekend. thanks, ginger. >> if you want to know the air quality in your neighborhood, we've made it easy for you. go to nbcbayarea.com/airquality.
5:05 am
you can type your address into the map box and you can see how things are where you live. this is a really big reminder for drivers in the south bay, happening tonight a section of northbound highway 87 will close for the entire weekend. >> mike inouye is in the newsroom with what drivers will have to keep in mind before they head out the door. >> good morning. even right now there's work going on at the 280-87 interchange, north 87 is actually down a couple of lanes. you see that on the maps, the yellow section. i do have a live look out there. our crews are showing you what's going on for northbound 87. that is open for service this morning, but this weekend full closure. let's show you the maps. north 87 from where it starts, highway 85, the northbound direction all the way into downtown san jose, will be closed, up to 280, starting tonight at 9:00 p.m. that's pretty early for a lot of
5:06 am
folks. you will be able to get to the concert at s.a.p., but that's about it. the section in red will be closed all weekend. the yellow route, if you take northbound 85 to 17, back to 280 south, that adds ten miles to the five-mile route, so that's three times as long. if you go south, you can connect on 101 and that adds 15 miles. that quadruples your drive. if you're taking your way toward san jose international airport, that's definitely travel time you need to count on. we'll watch on the traffic map. those are the two options, north on highway 17 or north on 101 to get back over to the downtown area starting tonight at 9:00. back to you. >> thank you so much. new overnight, b.a.r.t. disrupted after police respond to some kind of late-night incident at oakland's 19th street station. it happened just after midnight. a witness told our photographer

at the scene that someone was stabbed. police have not confirmed that, but we know paramedics took someone to the hospital. officers detained someone else. once police provide more confirmation and information, we'll, of course, bring it to you. a live look at capitol hill this morning, and the visit from ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy to the nation's capitol is now in the books. this morning he's in canada continuing his push for more funding to support the war against russia. yesterday president biden promised an additional $325 million in military aid. that's separate from the $24 billion the president wants congress to approve. but some house conservatives are still pushing to remove ukraine funding from the defense spending bill that, once again, failed to advance yesterday. scott mcgrew is following developments out of washington and will have the update in the next half hour. when it comes to making it in the bay, there is new evidence the pause in higher

real estate prices may be over. a new study analyzing zillow data lis san francisco for going above the asking price and san jose is coming in fourth. typically this is an indicator of supply not meeting demand. vallejo homes are selling for an average of 1% above asking. and across the nation the rate of home selling above the listing price now the highest it's been in about one year. the niners fans will be happy to clear the air for you right now, because this one is one of the very best teams in pro football right now. >> certainly showed it yesterday. this is with the home opener against the new york giants. as ginger was telling us, fans braved the not so great air quality to watch another dominant performance. brock purdy threw for more than 300 yards. rookie seventh round draft pick caught his first touchdown, and
5:09 am
christian mccaffrey had a touchdown. the niners crushed the second half, beating the giants 30-12. now, after, head coach kyle shanahan said the team put in the hard work during the short week. >> the guys, they want to win and have sa weekend off, we've got to earn it, and those guys did. >> the niners are now 3-0. they play their next game sunday, october 1st, when they host arizona cardinals at levi's. as ginger was saying, people had masks on. high school football is tonight, pretty much across the bay area. how is it going to be? it seems better this morning. >> it's going to be a little better, but we're still going to have the hazy skies and the smoke will lift up just a little bit. we're looking at moderate air quality that will continue into the afternoon. we're still getting some drifts of smoke in here, but yesterday at this time we were seeing a lot of greens and yellows on the
5:10 am
map. the lighter blue indicates a lighter amount of smoke coming in, and that's what we'll see as we go throughout today into the afternoon. there still will be a hazy skies, once again, but it looks like a lot of that smoke will be lifting up and we're not going to see it as concentrated, and it continues to improve as we go throughout the weekend. san jose, here is a look at our trend throughout the day. temperature-wise, starting out with mid-60s, at noon 71 degrees. we'll see temperatures later on this evening dropping back into the mid-60s. so bring the jacket for those friday night football games. mike says as of right now, the commute is all smooth. >> so far, so good. it's friday, we expect a lighter commute. we're looking at no problems with highway 4. it would typically show early slowing. yesterday they had slowing for a crew that took a little while to pick up. it's friday, i think everybody wants to get done with work on time. smooth drive across the bay bridge. there may be a little blip approaching the dublin interchange for west 580.

the south bay, a new incident for north 101. 87, still open this morning. reminder, it closes, full closure, at 9:00 p.m. in dublin, approaching the interchange, heading toward the earlier report of a crash, it looks like everything is clear. we'll continue to track. coming up on "today in the bay," cisco and spelunk, which sounds like a movie review, i'll give that two thumbs up. we're heating things up with nsync back together, already breaking records. get this, one had nothing to do with their music. coming up, how things got heated in their latest appearance.

5:14 am
good friday morning. we are still under the microclimate weather alert due to poor air quality in some spots. as we take a look at brentwood and our commute this morning, if you can, carpool or catch public transit. that really helps out with air quality as well. temperatures going from mid-50s to 70 degrees at noon. we will have another mild day and we'll get a look ahead to the weekend coming up. it's a mild drive right now. the commute over the bay bridge, taillights heading toward the city, you see the lights in the distance. a smooth drive right now. no major problems through the maze. i think i've got more information on the tri-valley crash. i'll confirm that and bring that to you. good morning. happy friday. it's generally been a lousy week
5:15 am
for the markets. we're coming off three days of losses, the nasdaq is down about 3.5% for the week, and the week is not over. dow down about 1.6%. big news, microsoft got the go-ahead to buy up activision from british regulators, and it's the last step they need for the mega merger. yesterday we told you that cisco would buy splunk, cisco is going to pay shares. the stock jumped a lot, though interestingly not to the purchase price. splunk has offices in san jose, but the main office in san francisco. cisco's san francisco presence just got a lot bigger, like 50% bigger. $28 billion, the most cisco has spent on anything ever. we like to bring you news as it breaks and we're constantly

checking with the united auto workers. uaw says it will expand its strike to new car plants today. right now there are walkouts at three plants in the great lakes area. the national association of realtors says home sales are down 21% nationwide for the year. that's not good news for home buyers, though. it just means less selection, and that actually drives prices up about 4% nationwide. i want you to look at something. this is an interview i did ten years ago with a 24-year-old irish guy who is here in america on a visa. >> you are a guest in this country. >> correct. >> you employ how many people? >> 120 people now. >> you are creating wealth for americans, but you are here at the pleasure of the united states government? >> uh-huh. >> now, if you work in tech, you know john and his brother, patrick, created stripe and began the youngest self-made billionaires in america shortly after coming to america. this week on our podcast, sand

to america. >> leaving everything you know. >> and creating something new. thank you. >> creating a lot of new. we know the temperatures may be cooling down, but the golden arches are spicing things up with a comeback. mcdonald's is bringing back its spicy chicken mcnuggets. when it was first introduced, the chain could not keep up with demand and it briefly made a comeback in february of 2021. since then, fans have been waiting for their return. spicy chicken mcnuggets will only be available for a limited time in sets of 6, 10, 20. go all the way to 40. >> better get a lot of sauce. trending this morning, let's talk about nsync. nsync with the chicken and spice. >> that's right. both key ingredients the latest chapter of their closely-watched comeback. >> i say it's going to be me. he was like, no, no, no, and he

said, it's may. it was a specific note i got. and i was, like, this guy is crazy. >> this is going to be meme worthy. >> the popular boy band now featured in the latest episode of "hot ones" where guests eat chicken wings that get increasingly spicier. that was justin timberlake. nsync broke a record with most guests on the show at one time, and the most wings ever eaten. it amounted to five guests and 60 wings at one table. they start getting so hot, they were crying. >> don't touch your eyes. >> that's the worst. >> a boy band? these guys? >> no, k-pop. all right, fall is quickly approaching. last day of summer today.
5:20 am
>> yes, it is. i'm already decked out for fall. >> i knew you would be today. >> i'm ready. cooler temperatures. >> you've been ready. >> yeah, why not? the only thing we have to deal with sometimes in the fall is the smoke. the poor air quality. and that's what we have draped over the bay area right now. a layer of smoke that will gradually improve over the next couple of days, but we're still looking at, at times, some of the smoke coming in, especially this morning, that's a little bit unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially in parts of the north bay. in oakland, we're seeing numbers in the unhealthy range, and in san jose where we are also seeing some more drifts of smoke and settling into the valleys. as we go into the afternoon, looking at temperatures, we're headed for the upper 70s and low 80s. a lot of these temperatures are the same that we've seen throughout the week. it's been really nice and comfortable. but, unfortunately, we haven't been able to go out for long walks and enjoy it because of the air quality and the hazy
5:21 am
skies. we're headed for 72 degrees in oakland today and 80 in livermore. still some low to mid-60s to half moon bay, and san mateo, expect a high of 71 degrees, and upper 60s in san francisco. for the north bay, headed for 75 in santa rosa, and we'll see some upper 70s for sonoma. and today, the first day of fall, we're talking about that, but why? well, because the earth is tilted in a way where we have an equal amount of day and night as the sun moves directly over the equator, and of course we are starting to see earlier sunsets and the leaves eventually will begin changing for us. for us, the peak of the fall color happens right around thanksgiving. it may be earlier, because we're starting to see rain chances in the forecast and possibly cooler temperatures as we look ahead. here we are on monday afternoon, and those areas that are dealing with the complex of fires farther to the north may have a
5:22 am
really good amount of rainfall coming in, which could possibly help not only put out the fire, but improve the air quality as well. and as that moves closer to the bay area, a lot of the rain really falling apart, but some of the models still picking up on a chance that we could see some measurable rain, especially for the north bay, for late monday into tuesday. so the best chance of getting some rain above a quarter inch will be from santa rosa on northward, with some parts of far northern california possibly getting a couple of inches of rain with that system. so we'll be watching that. as we take a look at our temperatures that are still remaining about the same, with that chance of showers coming in late monday into tuesday, and then it does warm up slightly for the middle of next week inland, while san francisco is going to see some hazy skies and temperatures in the upper 60s for the afternoon. mike, you have a crash you're tracking in san jose? >> i do. we're talking about highway 87, for folks just waking up right now, 87 is open. we'll talk about the closure
5:23 am
coming up. we're looking at a smooth drive until you get to curtner where there is a crash in the middle of the freeway, clear by the time you get to downtown. no injuries reported. got to get the car cleared, though. we're looking at a smooth drive westbound 580. the incident i saw near the interchange is south 680 at the dublin off-ramp. if that's your exit, watch for a crew there. they may be restricting traffic for a couple of minutes. a smooth drive, at speed out of antioch for highway 4 and across the carquinez and benicia bridges. same for the bay bridge. back to you. 5:23. coming up next, nbc bay area responds. >> one viewer is missing something, another is getting too much of something else, and they both need our help. i'm consumer investigator chris

can i get a good tgif? >> tgif! >> i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. a busy friday morning on tap, including a closure for one busy south bay highway. mike is going to have details in just a moment. >> first, let's get a look at the forecast. kari has been monitoring. finally some clear skies as we approach the weekend. >> yes, and of course it's coming just in time for all of the outdoor activities and people trying to enjoy the cooler weather. the worst of the air quality right now is moving through parts of the north bay, as well as oakland. we're also seeing it in the south bay, with unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups. that means that if you have any kind of health conditions, heart problems, breathing problems, or the children or the elderly, you should definitely limit time outside as we're dealing with drifts of smoke coming in. the morning is when it really starts to get pushed down toward the surface. that's when we are expecting the
5:32 am
worst of the air quality. gradually, it's going to be improving today. still coming from those fires farther to the north. a lot more of the blue, which is moderate air quality. it's still going to look hazy, but it won't be as unhealthy as it has been, and we continue to see improvements as we go into the weekend, as we get more of a breeze. and hopefully seeing fires farther to the north taper off just a bit and get some more containment. we'll get a look at weekend events going on around the bay area, how you can plan your weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. law enforcement has a better idea of what motivated a man to shoot and kill a woman yesterday morning at a car dealership in the east bay. bob redell is joining us from albany with the latest here. bob, just a tragic story. what happened here? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. overnight the alameda county sheriff's office indicated to us
5:33 am
the shooting that took place at this dealership behind me on eastshore freeway in albany was an act of domestic violence. so what happened yesterday morning, around 11:15, a man walked into this dealership and shot and killed a woman who worked at the service center. a number of people called 911. both albany and berkeley police responded to the scene. a so-called fast action team with berkeley police, they evacuated the business and found the shooter on the second floor. according to law enforcement, they confronted the man, a number of officers fired their guns and killed him. this is audio from the police dispatch. >> hold your fire, hold your fire. shots fired. suspect down. >> when officers arrived on scene, officers entered the building, located a victim, encountered a suspect, and an exchange of gunfire occurred. >> reporter: police say both the victim and suspect died here on the scene.
5:34 am
no one else was injured. again, law enforcement believes this was an act of domestic violence. the alameda county sheriff's office, along with the district attorney's office, both agencies are investigating this shooting since officers were involved. reporting live in albany, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. well, another big story we are following, the weekend closure of northbound highway 87. >> this morning we've got team coverage on the impact drivers can expect to see. mike inouye is tracking the work-arounds for you. first, let's check in with kris sanchez. she joins us live with a look at the activity. >> reporter: laura, the work doesn't start until after 9:00 tonight, but caltrans has been staging materials and equipment along the route. i know you saw some on your way into work this morning. i want to show you the area where the work is going to happen. we can't show you this enough. the roadway closure is going to be on highway 87. mike is going to go into more details about the detours in a

moment, but this is the big picture. highway 87 will be closed only in the northbound direction from 85 connecter in the south, to the 280 connecter ramps all the way in the north, as early as 8:00 tonight is when the ramps are going to start to close. the roadway work will begin at 9:00. the northbound closure is the beginning of a $69 million project that will replace the pavement, update ramps at six differently intersections, improve the drainage, guardrails and barriers will be upgrade skpd the bike lanes that run parallel will be resurfaced. >> improving the ride quality and enhancing safety on state rout 87. it's time to do some repaving on that route. it's going to add another 20-year life cycle, flexible paving structure. >> reporter: southbound lanes will get the same treatment a separate weekend coming up in october. this is going to be tough for

local businesses who say without the freeway traffic this is going to impact their bottom line. but the goal is to get this work done and reopen the freeway in time for the morning commute 5:00 a.m. on monday morning. busy weekend for them and a weekend of detours for us. >> it's going to be busy. trying to look at the work-arounds here. let's check in with mike right now. he's been warning us about this closure all week. you've got where we can go. >> we've been talking about it a lot. now we're talking about people who need to get to the airport, downtown san jose, starting tonight. we'll get a closer look. the entire northbound direction of 87, it's fine right now. fine for the morning commute. now, this evening things are going to start closing. you'll see on-ramps closing about 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m., full closure. the yellow route there, heading north to 17 and back around on

280, that adds ten more miles onto the five-mile red stretch, so that's going to triple your drive distance, that's going to be more than triple the time. if you go to the south taking 101 off of southbound 85 and then back up on 280, that loop is even longer and adds 15 miles. that's quadruple the travel time getting toward downtown. that includes if you're heading north toward the airport. locals can make lincoln or meridian, monterey highway. these are all options. but, again, signals as opposed to freeways. those are your two routes, highway 17 adds ten miles, 101 adds 15. make your choices and follow your updates on the website and the app. that will have live traffic as it shifts all weekend. >> thank you so much. 5:37 now. it turns out another bay area city is missing out on state windfall to help fight retail
