vivek ramaswamy himself, a son of immigrants, sat down with nbc this week in his first major interview with us, and outlined his plan to strip american citizenship from children and adults born here whose parents came illegally or overstayed a visa. >> people right now who are considered american citizens are no longer under a ramaswamy administration? >> i want to be very clear about this, i think that birthright citizen does not and should not apply to the kids of parents who entered this country illegally. >> now, this idea comes up from time to time, but the u.s. constitution is clear. if you were born in america, you are american. the supreme court even took up that idea, this case, with a fellow born to chinese parents in san francisco. an american, who later in life traveled to china, and then wasn't let back into america.
6:48 am
the supreme court said he was definitely american. this was back in 1898. >> 1898, all right. thanks, scott. 6:47 right now. turning the lights back on on the bay bridge. one group pushing to bring back the light installation. the lights went out in march after a decade of shining. no one had money to repair the lights. the organization illuminate is now raising the money. right now they still need about $2 million. the money would repair broken lights and then some. the new idea is called the installation bay lights 360, with lights visible on both sides of the bridge. organizers believe the lights had help improve san francisco's image, although some remain skeptical. >> we've shown the symbol of san francisco's vitality and energy moving forward. >> i feel like it's not going to do anything about the unsafe part and that is something that
6:49 am
the city needs to do something about, authorities need to do something about that. >> illuminate hopes to secure funding by november, just in time for the asian pacific economic corporation or apec summit. 6:48 right now. kari has been talking about it all morning. today officially is the last day of summer. and our very own mother nature has a message. kari says, it's fall, y'all, or at least almost. i know, fall is your favorite, kari. we love you for it. i love summer, i hate to see it go. but we're celebrating fall, as we always do with kari, and every year we kick it off with some gifts. and i found this one for you. >> my goodness. >> i didn't want the boys to be left out. fall cookies here. i thought, if you can't beat them, join them. bring out the pumpkin. >> nice. >> here we go. happy fall, y'all.
6:50 am
[ laughter ] >> it's cute. thank you. >> it's all yours now. >> so fall officially kicks off tonight. >> yes, at 11:50 p.m. we're going to be enjoying all these little goodies. i see where you got those treats. that's where i go for all my stuff. we can share them. >> okay. >> she's even dressed like autumn today. >> waiting on the leaves to change. so we have a few more hours of summer, and we're dealing with something else that we sometimes see during the fall, wildfire smoke. but i do see things improving today, so that's the great news that we have here, along with the cooler temperatures. it does look hazy as you're heading out in dublin this morning, and we're going to see some drifts of smoke coming in. but it's not as bright as it was yesterday. we were seeing a lot of yellows and even oranges here on our
6:51 am
near surface smoke model. now it looks blue, which is moderate air quality, and that's what we see going into the afternoon. once again, if you do still have any sensitivity to wildfire smoke and the high amount of particulate matter we're seeing, limit your time outside. we do start to see it improving going into tomorrow, but it still will be a little hazy, even into tomorrow afternoon. but we are looking at temperatures that are feeling pretty comfortable, with los gatos headed for 78 degrees and also 78 in morgan hill. and then for parts of the inner bay, with oakland reaching 72, you make your way over toward the tri-valley, and pleasanton will see a high of 79, 71 for san mateo, and san francisco in the mid to upper 60s again today. for the north bay, expect it to reach up to 81 in clear lake, while napa will see a high of 76 degrees. so it starts tonight at 11:50 p.m. so what's happening here, the earth's axis is tilted at an
6:52 am
angle of 23.5 degrees, and twice a year we have the earth perpendicular to the sun's rays. any other day, the sun is either tilted slightly away or from the sun, or the earth is tilted, so we are seeing our equinox as the sun's rays shine directly over the equator. so going into the next few days we're going to start to see things changing and eventually leaves changing, as we are also seeing our weather pattern changing. take a look at what may be coming our way early next week, our first storm system hitting the pacific northwest, falling apart as it moves into the bay area. but this may provide some beneficial rain to the complex of fires that's burning farther to the north. and the reason why we're dealing with the unhealthy air quality. so hopefully things continue to improve as we get more rain coming in. there's also a slight chance that parts of the north bay could especially see measurable rain for the start of next week. some of the models putting down
6:53 am
in these areas yellows and reds showing about possibly three-quarters of an inch of rain or more for those upper elevations, much of the rest of the bay area may not see much at all, or a quarter inch of rain or less. so great to see rain chances ahead. we're going to enjoy our weekend with our temperatures in the upper 70s in the inland areas, and san francisco will continue to see highs reaching into the upper 60s. mike, you're starting to see a slowdown on the bridges? >> we are seeing a slow down, the backup approaching the richmond bridge, not the bay bridge. the metering lights are on at the bay bridge. we see a lot of traffic on our camera there at the toll plaza for the richmond ridge. a slower drive for westbound 580, slowing into berkeley. we have a couple of crashes in contra costa county. i'm tracking them. one on 242 just off of westbound 4, another on 680, a disabled vehicle. we'll continue to track that. more slowing across the san mateo bridge, also.
6:54 am
