fans are getting what they can get. >> we'll take you out to the oakland coliseum today for the last home game of a very hectic season of the oakland a's. >> and we're tracking a system that could make for a wet start to our workweek. when and where we might see rain in the bay area. >> thanks for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. >> breaking news out of hollywood tonight within the last couple of hours. a tentative deal was reached between hollywood screenwriters and studios. this comes after five days of negotiations between the writers guild of america and major studios. two sides were divide on issues of pay, the size of writing staff on shows and the use of artificial intelligence. it has to be ratified by members of the union before going into effect. if approved, late-night shows like the "tonight show" could

come back within days, but it could take longer for other projects. >> you're going to have to see a ramp up. that could go anywhere from three weeks to six weeks to get scripts in place and productions up and running and then seeing things being filmed. and it can be a big, big hit for the studios, bottom line. >> today's agreement comes five days before the strike would have become the longest in the guild's history and the longest hollywood strike i 70 years. governor newsom released a statement. plans for a different kind of strike are in the works for oakland to increase public safety presence and financial support for businesses.

the strike is planned for tuesday. alyssa goard caught up with several businesses planning to participate. >> reporter: nigel jones says thieves broke into his restaurant and the damages amounted to more than $2,000. but that was not the only cost. >> and when these things happen, it's a scar on the community, because people see it. they walk by. they see the broken window, as they do see broken glass from car windows all around the city. >> reporter: some businesses are planning for a strike on tuesday, both of nigel's restaurants will be closed that day for the strike, which he says is spearheaded by the oakland chinatown chamber of commerce. >> we're also trying to build solidarity with our residents. they have a role to play as well. >> those act of economic aggression imfakt pact our team and the other businesses in the

the last week or so. it's not just the north bay we're expecting to see rain showing up tomorrow night. oakland south may not see rain. but watch out for dangerous surf. 960 millibar low here is cranking up a lot of wind offshore. happening right now, there's 20-30-foot wave heights. as that swell approaches the coast, that's going to lead us into a high surf advisory. we could see wave heights of 14 to 17 feet along the coast. so the wave heights we're seeing now, two to four feet, will be going much higher by tomorrow night. a closer look at our bay area rain totals and the rest of the changes ahead, a little bit of a warmup in the forecast. a closer look coming up in ten minutes. >> we'll check with you in just

a bit. don't forget, can you track the rain from your smartphone. and customize weather alerts minutes before it starts raining in your neighborhood. a first responders rescue add man off lands end. if you watch this show, you know this happens a lot. a man was able to call 911 from near where he fell. the active search and rescue is over. paramedics lifted the man to safety. is he now in the hospital be treated for serious injuries. a reminder for everyone, stay on designated trails and paths. in oakland, police are investigating a deadly crash involving a stolen vehicle. it happened around 10:00 this morning at the corner of 73 avenue and hawley street. a driver in a lexus, stolen out of daly city was speeding when it crashed into another lexus.

the impact was so powerful the other lexus slammed into a parked car. a 64-year-old man driving and a 67-year-old woman in the passenger seat were killed. a man in the back seat was hurt by survived. the other driver is a 25-year-old oakland resident. in sonoma county, one is dead and another injured after a crash. the van they were in hit a tree. officers say the scene, at the scene, they say the driver was speeding. the passenger was killed and the driver rushed to the hospital with major injuries. it's not clear yet what led up to the crash. president biden is taking a trip to the bay area. he'll be here tuesday and wednesday. two separate fundraisers. the first is in atherton hosted by a billionaire couple.

then he will be at a fundraiser by a facebook co-founder. the federal government is heading toward a shutdown that could disrupt services and squeeze workers. marianne favro takes a closer look at what it could mean to you. >> reporter: even though congress remains at an impasse at a funding deal, both republicans and democrats say there's still time to prevent a federal shutdown. >> i think we're able to work through this, at the end of the day, get there. >> reporter: we reached out to bay area congressman ro khanna who says he's working with colleagues to prevent a shutdown, adding that a government shutdown would hurt hardworking people in my district and across america, military personnel and federal employees. they would not be paid. with government funding set to expire october 1st, federal agencies are already preparing. nearly 4 million federal employees will be furloughed

until the shutdown is over. however, essential employees, including air traffic controllers and tsa workers will also be required to work and may not be paid. some passport facilities are expected to close. the food and drug administration could be forced to delay food safety inspections. some national parks could be closed entirely or offer limited services. during the last shutdown, the parking lot and restrooms closed at muir woods. social security checks will ten

choose wisely. choose wendy's new pumpkin spice frosty or cold brew. tomorrow is the 66th anniversary of the little rock nine. a group of nine african-american teenagers who were the first to enter a segregated school in arkansas in 1957. and it happened after a historic supreme court ruling. in our ongoing series, race in america, the conversation, i talked to one of the little rock nine who now lives in marin county about her fight more than six decades later. >> how do i feel? i feel that we have to continue marching. >> there is no stopping her. she came into this world on a historic day. >> i was born in 1941. on the day that they bombed pearl harbor. >> later, dr. beal would become

part of american history, all because she was a black teenager who wanted a good education like the white students. growing up in little rock, arkansas made it very difficult. >> if a white person was walking down the sidewalk towards me,ly to step off the sidewalk. coy never look at a white person. you could not go to their bathroom. or their water fountains. >> lynchings were normal for you to see? >> yes. out the back door, the question is, what's hanging on the line. and so i, you know, it wasn't something i was accustomed to. >> despite the horror, her independence turned her focus. education was important in her family. in 1954, the supreme court

issued a landmark ruling in brown versus the board of education. little rock's central high school was an all-white school then. >> my teacher asked one day inle skoo, who among you wants to go to central high school. i just raised my hand. and when she said, you know, take these papers home to have your parents fill them out, eh, you know, i'm going to do that myself. why should i? i didn't want to bother my mom with that problem. so i filled them out and took them back. so my mother never knew that this was going to happen, that i was going to be involved. she didn't tell me to do it. once they knew i was going to do it or wanted to do it, they said you can't. >> they said no, because she says groups like the kkk went house to house threatening black families. >> we were nine people. when we started out, there was 114 of us.

so those 114 were talked down to nine. by the people, by the threats. >> but a then 15-year-old melba was determined, despite the dangers. the situation was so bad, president eisenhower got involved. >> i never got to be a student at central high without the president of the united states sending down the 101st airborne division. like soldiers going to war is how we went to school. >> she would only go for a year before coming to california. >> naacp decided they had to get us out of there. because the ku klux klan had $10,000 on our head. they bid for me, they got me. and that's how i got california. >> beals got her education.

area, she stayed with a quaker family in santa rosa, who she says would later bm become her family, and later, she got her bachelor's degree and went on to get her masters at columbia. hundreds of people packed chinatown for the 33rd annual autumn festival. it took over grant avenue from california street to broad way. the chinatown merchants association started the festival in 1991 after the loma prieta quake. the goal was to attract more people to the neighborhood. >> i think it's an eye-opener for all the different cultures that we have. chinatown's a great place to learn about asian culture. so i think it's a great place to learn about new cultures and new things. >> plenty of activities to keep festival goers busy, including moon cakes and a barbie and ken

bay. 76 san jose, upper 70s near san francisco, 72 in oakland. check out what this system could do to these active wildfires. that's where the rain bull's eye is. once the rain rates goat half an inch per hour it could cause issues locally, but that's going to make a big impact on fire activity. look at the same break down once we get into the bay area, pretty underwhelming. right now it looks like northwestern sonoma county, best chance for a quarter inch of rain or a third inch of rain. areas south of san francisco really not seeing much in the way of rainfall. so late tomorrow into monday

evening, we'll watch those rain chances dropping out of the north bay. 11:00 tomorrow night to about 5:00 a.m. tuesday will be the window for brief light rain passing through the bay area. and then we get clearing skies and temperatures starting to warm up again, tuesday, back into 80s inland as we get into tuesday, and wednesday you see inland valley temperatures. next chance for showers, most likely drops inland to the east. keep in mind, if you have sierra travel plans next weekend, may see a slight chance of snowshowers above 8,000 feet. but for us in the by area, it's likely to mean more wind as opposed to showers later this week. so rollercoaster ride of temperatures. we warm up toward the middle part of the week of the then we'll have to watch the winds given that they're north winds that could lead to dry condition these next weekend. stay tuned on that forecast. best chance of rain this week at least looks like tomorrow night into early tuesday.

night football. we investigate an unusual showdown getting a lot of attention from people in the wine industry. >> jaxon van derbeken tells us the public tab for the legal battle over tastings now exceeds over half a million dollars. >> we called it the oasis, because it's in a bucolic setting. >> reporter: lindsey strives to be a good steward of the land. people come to sip wine while surrounded by an animal sanctuary and a vineyard. >> i have biodiversity and animals. >> reporter: for all her good intentions, the former prosecutor finds herself in an epic fight with napa county over the winery's future of the county sued to shut the oasis

down saying it was offering illegal tastings. >> i don't even get parking tickets. for me, being accused of violating a law is probably my worst nightmare. >> reporter: when she bought the winery back in 2017, she says she understood the winery had been offering tastings for decades, under a small winery permit the county issued in 1984. the county disputes that, saying she is not permitted to provide tastings of any kind because it operates pursuant to a small winery exemption and that the chicken coops pose a public nuisance. one told the judge that the regulations are designed to keep wine country from becoming disneyland. she says that's absurd. she averages just eight visitors a day. >> and on this road, we're surrounded by vineyards.

there's no residents new york city children running around. >> reporter: two other wineries recently joined the fight, arguing their permits also allow for tasting. the courts have so far sided with hoopes. but she soon found herself in a second battle with the county. in july, napa county code enforcement showed up at her late mother's vacant vineyard home right when the deal to sell the house was pending. >> we requested a warrant for all buildings. >> reporter: hoopes decided to sell it to count for her legal fees. the permit dates back 15 years. >> it's devastating. i think it was meant to intimidate me. >> reporter: the county says it was just doing court-authorized followups on a permit issue but would not make anyone available to us to talk in person. as for the winery's future, the county has spent more than a

we did not get there. yesterday and today, mid-70s. pretty comfortable. we got the sunshine. better air quality, which is nice. we should see similar temperatures tomorrow burks in tomorrow, but in the north bay it will be turning cooler. morning temperatures starting off in the 50s with spotty drizzle possible along the coast. by midday a mix of clouds and sunshine. watch these temperatures increasing, increasing wind and clouds, we'll likely see 60s north of the godin gate. 60 san francisco, low 70s into oakland. so a very classic-looking, what we call a mid latitude cyclone. 960 millibar low cranking offshore. wave heights near the center of the storm, 20 to 30 feet. by the time the energy reaches our coast, we could see 16 to

17-foot breakers. in terms of the rain, heres a the underwhelming part, mendocino county northward gets the best of this. northwestern sonoma county, maybe a third of an inch of rain. it really does drop off. south of san francisco into san jose you may not officially register rainfall, as the front kind of falls apart late tomorrow night. so tomorrow evening, the rain there in the north bay. 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., probably enough on the roads tuesday morning to have some damper, briefly wet roadways. by the afternoon, temperatures rebounding. 70s and 80s inland. tuesday's highs warmer than the weather we saw over the weekend. 70s and 80s around the north bay. second half of the week we begin to see some cooling, as our second weather system drops in, but this one may drop in east of

the sierra, cold enough maybe to see snowshowers above 8,000 feet. but here's the issue for the bay area. on the west side of this, we're likely to see some wind. and you know how things go september and october. wind direction is important. right now could be looking at gusty offshore winds as we approach saturday. notice the direction of those wind arrows there. something to watch for. that would and dry wind as we head toward next weekend. next saturday and sunday we're looking at mostly sunny conditions and a bit of a warmup by sunday. san francisco will warm up midweek. slight chance of shower early tuesday and then gone. then eyes on the winds as we head towards next weekend and a chance for high-elevation snowshowers. it's starting to look like fall in the seven-day forecast. >> yeah, the rain appearing as fall here rob, thank you. everyone buzzing about this. we now know who will headline
