we are starting out here at 52 degrees. we will see more sunshine today and temperatures going from low 50s to low 60s at 9:00, and then low 70s at 11:00. there will be a quick warm-up heading into the afternoon as we head for 80 degrees there in dublin. in martinez, we will reach 83 today and novato reaching 82. we will be in the upper 70s for san josé. we will talk about changes ahead in the weekend forecast. where we might see rain, that's in a few minutes. mike, the cameras are looking busy. >> yeah, a lot more traffic, and this is 101 north of the 680 and 280 interchange, and there has not been anything unusual, but we will track it. there's a crash on 880.

across the bay bridge, a blip shows up and i will watch that closely, too. the u.s. soldier that suddenly raced across the border from south korea to north korea is back in the u.s. soil this morning. this is new video of the plane carrying private travis king. the 23-year-old arrived in civilian clothing and is being evaluated at a army medical center here in the u.s. north korea expelled king after his bizarre race across the border in mid july, and also following his release from the south korean prison at the time the military was considering more discipline for king, but for now all that is on hold. and then seeking new

solutions to halt the surge in crime. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco this morning. there's a lot of different strategies on the table right now. >> that is correct, marcus. good morning. san francisco's committee is meeting today, and there are lots of things on the agenda, the creation of a gun violence victim program, and also prohibiting armed guards from using firearms to protect property. at the same time the president of the west portal cities says she's seeing crime get worse. a candy store that has been around since 1913, and this

attack is leaving the community shaken. you can see in the surveillance video from the spa next door, and that is what the attack looked like, you can see a man lunge at and push the manager. the man entered the store and punched her in the face. the owner who was pushed outside the store suffered more serious injuries and went to the emergency room. a customer in the store was also attacked. >> if we are not safe in our neighbors, where are we safe? something has to be fixed. >> the owner of the gym across the street said he came outside after a passerby tackled and

restrained that man and that man was taken into police custody. the meeting starts at 10:00, several hours from now, and we can expect many things on the agenda to be discussed, and also attacks like this creating fear in different neighborhoods in the city. >> ginger, thank you. developing in washington, sunday's deadline to avoid a government shutdown gets closer with two days left. so does the likelihood that a new funding deal will not fall into place in time. drew, there's some opposition. >> yeah, kevin mccarthy said he will bring a short-term bill up

for a vote, and the house speaker is trying to convince holdouts digging in over spending cuts to support the measure. hakeem jeffries spoke out saying if that bill comes up for a vote, democrats will support it. as frustrations grow across the country, a group of young social media influencers are going to deliver a petition that opposed a shutdown. >> there are real people on the end of what it means to lock people out of their government and stop their benefits. >> meanwhile, the senate made movement on its own stop gap measurement, and republicans were working to add amendments to make it more agreeable to their colleagues in the houses

josé, and moving over towards the east bay expect it to reach 82 in danville. oakland reaching 77 degrees. daly city, we're back up to 70 degrees. a lot of these temperatures are basically where we were yesterday with upper 60s and low 70s in san francisco. santa rosa today reaching 85. we could see rain this weekend. i will talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, i rode past a gas station and it was over 6.50 a gallon? >> yeah, they thought you were going to win the powerball. and yeah, here we did try to find the best we can get for you through gasbuddy.com. the best price is in benicia, it's bob's liquor, and good for you, bob.

good thursday morning. the time is that 5:14. as you head out in berkeley it's starting out with a few clouds and temperatures in the upper 50s. it will be another beautiful day as the sunshine continues and our highs reach in the mid-70s. comfortable today, but we have changes in our weekend forecast talking about rain chances and cooler temperatures, coming up in a few minutes.

traffic on the nimitz north of the coliseum. nice speeds southbound. there could be a little slowing up north, and there was a crash reported on that part of the nimitz. we will give you an update on that. just two business days left in the quarter. it has been a rough quarter on wall street. new accusations from the fed, this time at east bay, which says the online auction site sold things it shouldn't, pesticides. peloton made a deal with lululemon. lululemon will start selling peloton clothing, and lululemon said it will stop selling the mirror at the end of the year. it's a $999 device that displays online fit classes. if you already have a mirror, as far as we can tell, lululemon

will continue to provide services to it but will not sign up new customers starting at the end of the year. it's always something to think about when buying an expensive device. amazon, the self driving car division will build a car factory in the east bay according to the san francisco times, and zoox would not confirm that. trump was at the nonunion factory. a lot going on in the world of ai. chatgpt says it will be able to search the open web for answers, and until now chatgpt could only learn from meta until 2021.

>> yeah, it's limited to two. i need to find somewhere else so i can get what i need. >> yeah, can i have a sample? just a little something. we have a lot of golden sunshine across the bay area, across the golden state. we will continue to see that for today as our valley temperatures head for the low to mid-80s. tomorrow more clouds will be coming in and the showers will be arriving, especially in the north bay late in the evening. then we will watch out for off and on spotty showers throughout saturday, and the first snow of the season will be happening this weekend. we will talk about where. here are the highs for today. fairfield reaching up to 88 degrees, and most of us are feeling some of the same weather and some of the same temperatures as yesterday, with a high of 77 in oakland, and napa reaching 80 degrees. a high of 71 in san francisco. mountain view reaching 77

degrees. as you look at the 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, you will see there will be changes ahead, so let's talk about that. the storm system moving into the pacific north worst will start to make its way closer to our area heading into late friday with spotty rain. it's going to be off and on late friday evening. go into saturday, it shows quite a bit of off and on light showers into the day and evening, but we are looking at rainfall totals for most of us, a quarter inch of rain or less, but further up to the north it could be half an inch of rain. we are already talking about snow in the sierra. looks light, but the first one in the season and only maybe above 8,000 feet, so that's a small percentage of what we will see in the sierra. looking at the inland forecast, chances of rain for the weekend, so sunday will be your day where you don't have to worry about any of that.

so tough. good morning to you. thank you for joining us for "today in the bay." i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. let's start out with a look at the forecast. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking what we can expect this thursday. >> it's a cooler morning, and we are seeing our mornings start out in the low 40s and 50s. it's 52 in palo alto, and it's 51 in santa rosa. 48 in sonoma. those are some of the lower numbers. as we head over to dublin, look at what to expect today. it will be a nice one as we head to about 81 degrees and sunshine this afternoon. around the bay area, a lot of the temperatures matching what we had yesterday, but head into the weekend more changes ahead. i will talk about that in a few minutes. mike, you spotted flashing lights. >> yeah, northbound 101, and they were flying over here. that transition is on to

northbound 680 off of 101 with the taillights. there was no update on the chp for a while, and now there's an update that there's a crash southbound 280 to northbound 680. that could be what is going on with the slowing and flashing lights. we will continue to follow this and see if that slowing lasts more than just a couple seconds. the rest of the bay shows a nice easy commute, predictable. back to you. you can't help but to notice the skyrocketing gas prices, and today in the bay's kris sanchez is live for us in san josé this morning. kris, what is the governor saying about all this? >> reporter: well, you know, he's definitely pointing the finger, but if you drive a gas car, these prices will not be a surprise. they are consistent around the

bay area. if you drive an electric car, you can count your lucky stars today. i want to show you what the average is across the country. right now people across the country are paying an average of less than $4. here in the bay area, santa clara approaching $6. take a look at this gas station near oracle park, that's a 7 there on the sign. experts say it's because we are being hit by outages at california refineries and a production slowdown in russia and saudi arabia, and that's the reason for the higher prices, and the governor used spicy language in talking about what the real price is. >> they are screwing us, and -- >> it's not taxation.

>> 85 cents -- >> how much does the californian pay for gas tax? >> i am being as transparent as i can be, and you add our unique blend, you get a differential of 85 cents, and -- if you want to trust the oil companies, i can assure you these guys don't have your back. >> reporter: the governor has called for a special investigation and there also has been a special session to address the rising gas prices, and to try and figure out what that extra $2 surplus that he's talking about that the companies add in. we will continue to follow this throughout the morning and will bring you as much as we can about what the governor had to say. >> thank you so much. with the rising gas prices

out there, we have you covered. we are not paying for your gas, but if you stick around until 6:00, mike will help you out and track the cheapest gas prices around the bay area. and then the actor sir michael gambon dies. his career spans five decades on tv and on the stage. he was knighted in 1998. his family says he died peacefully with them at his side after suffering from pneumonia. he was 82 years old. happening later today in the east bay, a man arrested in connection with a 1987 murder of a young boy in vallejo will be in court. >> and bob redell is outside the martinez police department. investigators believe he may be tied to another cold case?

>> reporter: correct. good morning. martinez police behind us tell me he's a person of interest in the 1987 same year death of another boy, a 9-year-old boy from vallejo. earlier this week the police arrested a man for the 1987 murder of a 6-year-old boy whose body was discovered in sacramento county. the police are investigating him. he is now 69 years old, and a 9-year-old boy's body was found weeks prior to the murder of the 6-year-old. we spoke with a girl that attended elementary school. >> as a eight or 9-year-old kid, it's not something you would think about. we still think about it and talk about it. after all these years, i think it make a lot of people feel a

certain way with this coming to some kind of closure. >> reporter: law enforcement tells us advances in dna technology led to the arest of kaine, and he will make his first court appearance this afternoon to answer to charges of murder along with allegations of kidnapping and sodomy. >> thank you, bob. happening today the oakland police commission is expected to hold a town hall on the potential of the rehiring of armstrong. oakland's side is reporting three commissioners are refusing to attend any meetings citing the reappointment opposed to vetting new candidates. oakland has been without a permanent chief since early

february and the mayor is awaiting a list of new candidates. and then an issue came to a head earlier this week when target announced its closing nine stores, including three in the bay area, and one of them in oakland. the retail giant cited out-of-control theft and safety concerns. the national retail federation reports today eight in ten chain reports thefts growing more violent. >> when we are outside in the shopping environment are these large-scale open and brazen events of theft or these individuals walking in and without any regard for anybody's safety or a care of apprehension will load up shopping bags or shopping carts and walk out of the stores. >> the industry analyst say last year -- get this, retail crime led to the loss of $112 billion

festival with upper 60s. cooler, cloudy and 66 degrees on saturday. by sunday we are seeing it clear out and 71 degrees. let's take a look live at palisades tahoe. if you are going to the sierra this weekend, it will be cool. pack a heavier jacket or coat and the umbrella because we are also going to see rain coming in on saturday. sunday it's clearing out and along the coastline we will see cool weather for saturday afternoon, but friday and sunday will be the best days to head out there. mike, you are starting with the south bay look. >> i am. let's zoom over here, and most of the freeways are in green, at speed, and northbound 101, slowing shows up and a clearing by oakland road. southbound 680, the crash is indeed south 680, and there's a little slowing and the crash activity is adding to that so that will be a little factor for the south bay right now.

flew out of sfo around 6:30 last night. today in phoenix biden will talk about defending our democracy the way john mccain did. and then we're starting to hear the frustration from other republicans. here's the top republican in the senate, mitch mcconnell. >> shutting down the government is not an effective way to make a point. keeping it open is the only way to make a difference on the most important issues we are facing. >> now, the government shutdown was a subject at last night's republican debate featuring seven candidates, and donald trump skipped it. here's nikki haley. >> congress only delivered a budget on time four times in 40 years, and if they do not pass a budget, they should not get

paid. >> this idea comes up from time to time. members of congress do get paid even if soldiers, sailors, and tsa workers don't. the way to punish them, like some members of congressman are wealthy, and they can wait it out. the house will hold its first impeachment hearing today. yesterday the house ways and means committee showed off some of the evidence it will present, and that's chairman jason smith in the light blue. and ryan noble pointed out much of the information they are presenting was from 2017, when joe biden was not in office. i am not an expert on the timeline, says smith.

laura? >> thank you. october is ovarian cancer month, and to help raise awareness the "today" show is sharing a story of one woman who only learned about the disease when she had it and decided to start a family. she was 34 years old and she made the decision to freeze her eggs, but first doctors had to remove a benign cyst from her overies. >> i knew it was a big deal. it was stage 1 ovarian cancer. >> on the "today" show, see how a healthy woman with no family history or symptoms went from

family planning to fighting cancer, and the steps women can try to take to detect that disease. it's at 7:00 a.m., right after "today in the bay." happening tonight in the skies above, fall kicks into high gear with the haarest moon. if you are wondering, this is always the closest moon to the autumn equinox, and the equinox is when crops are ripe for harvesting, and this year's harvest moon is also this year's fourth, so-called, super moon. kari, you have been talking about that. >> yeah, it's nice to see. i could see it this morning, too, coming in. we have more clear skies in the forecast, and we will see that as we go into the weekend as well. there are changes ahead as we look at our temperatures and some of the valleys today headed back to the low 80s. another nice and comfortable day. tomorrow we will gradually start to see more clouds coming in and showers will be arriving late in the evening, especially for the

north bay. for the weekend, for saturday especially, we could see spotty rain and the first sierra snow of the season. let's talk about our afternoon highs today while we are still enjoying the mild temperatures. concord expected to reach 85 and 80 in napa today. about the same temperatures tomorrow, but we will see it slightly cooler in livermore. clouds will be coming in as we watch this storm system up around the pacific northwest, and it will slide down the coastline and bring us the chance of rain by tomorrow evening, especially for the coastline and in parts of the north bay. it starts out spotty, but as we go into the day on saturday, we are waking up to more rain here and there. it looks like it will continue for some of the hills and parts of the north bay into saturday afternoon and into the evening. how much rain could we see here? some of the computer models

showing most of us get a little rain. we talked about the first snowfall of the season, and we are seeing some of the upper elevations above 8,000 feet could potentially get an inch or two of snowfall. it's exciting to see that, as we get early rain in our season as well. temperatures cool off on saturday, and spotty rain and mostly cloudy throughout the day. sunshine returns on sunday with highs in the 70s. expect it to be cool, breezy and off and on light rain there in san francisco as well, especially throughout the day on saturday. mike, you are tracking a crash, possibly two? >> yeah, 680 at the 101 interchange, and i think they

have more chp activity there. hopefully that means they are clearing the lanes. we have the slower drive, and that's not great out of berryessa. and the crash did not seem to ripple over towards 101 itself, only that one portion of 680. this could be a second crash we are talking about, eastbound 880, we do have a crash reported and an earlier car fire or a smoking vehicle there. there's another crash reported on the span coming down the decline. i have not seen slowing for either of those on the sensors, but an eastbound, there could be slowing. over here, vasco, it's over 20 minutes from marsh creek to 580. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now, a heads up

the bay." in today's climate in crisis, napa and the national snow and ice datacenter say the arctic sea ice is at its sixth lowest level on record. not only that, but the antarctic has measured record low growth, and between march and 2023, the ice cover shrunk from

5.64 million square miles, and the amount of sea ice lost was enough to cover the entire continental united states. when ice begins to melt at a higher rate than normal it creates what is called a positive feedback loop where the snow and ice reflects the sun's rays, and in turn it warms the ocean even more causing the melt period to last longer, and sea ice has a harder time recovering in the winter months. scientists are working to understand the cause of the meager growth of the antarctic sea ice, and it could be because of el nino and ocean warming
