>> the core argument that nikki haley seemed to have against you -- the core argument -- >> she has a grudge against me. i don't have a grudge against her. it's a one-way grudge. >> it's that voters can't trust you. what do you say to that? >> she said i made her dumber -- >> well, there was that, too. >> it's the first time i've ever heard that. >> so what kind of reaction did we see from the former president? was he watching? >> reporter: his campaign says he wasn't watching, and the trump campaign has argued it's time to move past all of these primary debates and rally around him, the front-runner, to focus on joe biden. but they also focused some of their energy on attacking nikki haley, not just their usual foil, ron desantis, suggesting that the trump campaign thinks that there might be someone else in second place soon. savannah? >> i guess in politics, that passes for a compliment. garrett, thank you very much. appreciate it. we have another breaking story overnight. the american soldier expelled from north korea after being detained there for months arrived back in the united states. nbc's morgan chesky is at the base in texas. he touched down there earlier

this morning. good morning, morgan. what's the latest? >> reporter: yeah, hoda. good morning. in a journey of more than 6,000 miles ended this morning for private second class travis king who arrived here not too long ago at joint base san antonio, and our crew was there to capture these moments showing military personnel escorting the 23-year-old wisconsin native off the plane. u.s. officials describe king in being in good health and good spirits. he did have a chance to speak with family over the phone prior to making the journey here. as for all of this how it started, of course that goes back to july. u.s. officials say that following allegations of assault in south carolina, king booked a tour to the dmz, the demilitarized zone separating north and south korea. on that tour, he bolted into north korea. officials there say king admitted to doing so because he was, quote, disillusioned with american society. u.s. officials meanwhile, say that there was no tradeoff for king.

and that the handoff came courtesy of swedish officials who escorted him to the chinese border, where he was met by both u.s. and chinese officials. a rare moment of cooperation. china saying that they only stepped in at the request of north korea and the u.s. to offer what they called humanitarian aid. now, as for what happens next here in san antonio, we are told that king will be treated at brooks army medical center for post isolation treatment and then potentially reunited with family in the near future. but i should say that king was declared absent without leave from the military. and that could result in potential punishment, charges, a dishonorable discharge, but military officials have made it very clear that as of this point in time, their main focus is making sure this 23-year-old wisconsin native is in good health and is reunited with family. hoda?

>> all right, morgan chesky for us there. morgan, thank you. back to politics. time is running out quickly to avoid a government shutdown. the deadline is now just two days away. nbc's ryan nobles joins us from washington. so we ask you again, ryan, how close are they to getting a deal? >> reporter: not close at all, savannah. good morning. you're right. only two days to go. republicans and democrats really not any closer to striking a deal to avert a government shutdown. in fact, at this point, the two sides aren't even really talking. then there's even real division within the house of representatives. speaker kevin mccarthy shooting down a bipartisan short-term spending bill that was proposed in the senate. in favor of moving a group of appropriations bills that really have no hope of passing the upper chamber. if they cannot strike a deal by midnight saturday, millions of government workers will not get paid that includes active duty members of the military who in the past were given carve-outs to keep them paid during a shutdown, but that is not happening this time around. members are expected to work through the weekend until an

agreement is reached, but the speaker is in a tight spot here because agreeing to the demands of the gop holdouts would have little of a plan that would have little chance of passing. so then if he turns to get help from the democrats, he could face ouster as speaker. so we're in a very difficult situation here on capitol hill, savannah. >> meanwhile, house republicans are still planning on doing their first hearing in their impeachment inquiry of president biden. what do you expect there? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. it's going to happen this morning. and in today's hearing, republicans have invited three expert witnesses, whose job it will be to peace together the information that the three committees investigating the president's family have collected, with the goal of attempting to try to establish a link between hunter biden's foreign business dealings and the president himself. but at this point, they've really yet to uncover that smoking gun, that specifically makes that connection. republicans are hoping that a new trove of documents released yesterday by the ways and means committee will help to establish that link. it's important to point out that the president has said repeatedly that he played no role in his son's businesses.

savannah? >> ryan nobles on capitol hill. thanks, ryan. also this morning, an intense manhunt is over for the suspect in the brutal murder of a tech entrepreneur in baltimore. police confirming an arrest overnight. nbc's emilie ikeda joins us now with details on this. hey, emily, good morning. >> reporter: hey there, hoda. baltimore residents are breathing a sigh of relief this morning, with this man who officials describe as armed and dangerous now off the streets. jason billingsley has been wanted for first-degree murder in the killing of tech ceo, pava la pere. but police now also tying him to other serious crimes that happened in another part of baltimore just last week. >> reporter: this morning, after a three-day manhunt, authorities confirming the arrest of jason billingsly, suspected in the killing of tech ceo pava lepere. the u.s. marshals telling an nbc affiliate that billingsley was arrested in connection with to murder at a train station in buoy, maryland. >> our special homicide unit has been working aggressively to

identify the suspect responsible for this tragic incident. lapere was found dead in the apartment builts where she lived and worked, sparking a massive man hunt for her killer. the mother of the suspect telling nbc news in a telephone interview she texted with her son. i told him to turn himself in because they're going to kill him. also saying that her son showed her a gun monday but she believes he's trying to sell it. authorities not revealing any connection between the 26-year-old rising star entrepreneur and the suspect, but billingsley has a lengthy rap sheet, including sex offenses and assault. he was released from jail last october, according to authorities, who are now confirming that billingsley also is wanted in connection with an attempted murder, arson, and rape that occurred in another part of baltimore last week. >> pava ceo -- >> reporter: while a student at johns hopkins university, she founded echo map technologies. her family, friends, and

response to the former president's speech but of course uaw union president shawn fain last week blasted the former president's plans to come here and speak to autoworkers at all. all of this, against the backdrop of another potential round of walk-outs. yesterday a source with the uaw telling nbc news that once again this week, just like last week, union president shawn fain will take to facebook live tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. eastern to announce another round of what they call strike targets, saying that come noon tomorrow, more workers could very well walk off the job at more facilities owned by the big three. this, of course, barring what the union calls serious progress in those contract talks with gm, ford and chrysler owner stellantis in a possible sign that contract talks with ford have once again stalled. i asked if they could be included in this new round of walk-outs. that source saying everything is on the table. savannah, back to you. >> maggie vespa, thank you, maggie.

morning for the owner of a san josé bakery, this after a truck rammed into the storefront. the owner also said several people got out of the vehicle and stole lotto scratchers before running from the scene. it happened around 4:00 this morning in a strip mall along senter road not far from the los gatos golf course. the bakery owner says he has been targeted by thieves several times in the past. police have not provided an update. and then a town hall today on the potential rehiring of former police chief armstrong. it comes with new reports of serious tension among those commissioners. oakland's side is reporting three commissioners are now refusing to attend any meetings until the commission's chair and vice chair are termed out next month, sighting armstrong's reappointment process versus the vetting of other candidates. earlier this month an outside report concluded armstrong was not at fault for the actions

knew just what to do when that black bear crashed her son's outdoor birthday celebration. you can see the bear jump right up on the picnic table, started eating everything on the table. santiago, the little boy there was so brave as well. he has down syndrome. his mom says he's afraid of animals, so she said, sit like a statue, she covered his eyes so he wouldn't react and wouldn't upset the animal. the animal went off, she was fine. when asked if she was a hero, she said, no, just a mama bear. >> oh my god. and that was a lot of time that bear spent there. >> yes. incredible to see that. >> brave mom. brave son. first up in this half hour. the alarming spike in retail crime in cities from coast to coast. we saw a glaring example in philly tuesday night. that violent looting spree targeting popular stores. >> at least 50 people have now been arrested. police promising there are more arrests to come. nbc's jacob soboroff is here with more on this trend, what's being done about it. we've been hearing about these smash and grabs a lot more and more. >> you said it.

we all saw the striking images of the storing being looted in philadelphia this week. and it is part of a larger trend. theft has impacted retailer margins, profitability, as well, to the tune of $112 billion last year. that's according to a new industry survey. but the violence associated with retail theft is the biggest concern. businesses of all sizes are now struggling to stay safe and keep their doors opened amid a nationwide crime spree. >> reporter: across the country, cities big and small are seeing a rise in retail crime. but it's the growing dangers associated with those thefts that are causing concern. >> but what we're seeing are these large-scale, open and brazen events of theft. >> reporter: shocking videos like these show increasingly violent criminal acts, leaving some business owners and their employees worried for their safety. while the financial hits from retail theft are only up slightly from last year, thest e heightened levels and threat of violence associated with these crimes are getting worse

a major study from the national retail federation found 81% of retailers reported that organized retail criminals have grown more violent and even 88% say that shoplifters are more aggressive and violent. it has more owners changing the way they're doing business >> i have more cameras than i ever had i have a staff person whose job is to walk around. my staff, you know, i have trained them up more to understand what they should and should not do. >> reporter: retailers are taking a hit at a time when they're already having a hard time filling open positions, with the holiday shopping season fast approaching >> i have had two people quit, because their like, i'm not doing this i'm not doing this >> reporter: oakland is among those cities most affected by organized retail crime the problems former oakland police chief, la rhone armstrong sees in his backyard, are now spreading across the country >> i think it's a combination of lack of enforcement, not enough resources, and not strong enough prosecution. >> i have seen it happen

i've seen people run out with products and security just kind of say, hey! and that's all they can really do >> reporter: though these brazen thefts seem to be happening more and more, law enforcement and retail experts say turning the tide on the nationwide crime spree is possible. >> we have to ask that states and local communities look at their current laws, related to property theft and larcenies and make sure they're strong enough to put consequences behind the criminal acts. >> other than closing stores, is there anything else that the companies can do when they're facing threats like this >> a couple things they're talking about, reducing the hours they're open or changing the products they're carrying. here is what they're targeting outer wear, batteries, energy drinks footwear, kitchen accessories. it's very complicated, but they're going to have security personnel in these stores. i like deborah, the woman talked to who said, no matter what happens, i'm not going to let these folks win. we'll keep our small business open, keep working, we've got to have the customers come in here and serve the community. most importantly

health and a powerful story for ovarian cancer awareness month >> this all started when morgan of chicago with dreams of having a family decided to freeze her eggs. and in that process, doctors made a surprising discovery. we'll talk to morgan right here in just a moment, but first, a look at her journey. >> reporter: morgan bellock knew she wanted to be a mom one day, but the timing wasn't right for the 34-year-old public relations specialist from chicago. so he decided to freeze her eggs, hoping to have a baby later down the road. >> i always wanted to be a mom unfortunately, as woman, we knew there are no guarantees. i had a gut feeling. i knew in my gut this was something i had to do. >> morgan arrived for her first egg freezing appointment in the summer of 2017 >> at my first appointment, it revealed a pretty large cyst, on my right ovary. they assured me it was benign, 99% chance the plan was to pause egg freezing for the time being.

>> reporter: the cyst refused to go away so doctors decided to remove it. during that surgery, they discovered what morgan never could have imagined. >> they found another tumor hiding behind the one that they were removing and that one was a cancerous tumor. i remember seeing the fear in my doctor's faces and i knew it was a big deal stage i ovarian cancer >> reporter: morgan never experienced any symptoms and had no family history of ovarian cancer there were no warning signs. she's among the nearly 20,000 women in this country diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year the disease spreads quickly and aggressively, and many women aren't diagnosed until stage iii or stage iv. morgan's life became an urgent fight against cancer and just weeks after her diagnosis, she was back in surgery. >> i had to remove my right ovary entirely but after that, i was given a clean bill of health which meant i had to be very closely monitored for about five years. i was told that i was cancer

free >> now nearly six years cancer free, morgan is in remission >> it's crazy to think that i just got very lucky and there's a very real chance that i wouldn't be here today if i hadn't gone into that doctor's appointment. >> reporter: as soon as doctors cleared her, morgan returned to her original goal of freezing her eggs, completing two cycles in 2018. and a happy new beginning she married her husband derek, two years ago, both eager to start a family morgan's life saved and her courageous quest to have another. and morgan joins us now along with nbc news medical contributor dr. natalie aczar. morgan, it's so nice to have you here what's it like to watch that, to watch this journey you've been on >> it's surreal. it feels like yesterday and also forever ago. >> it's so many swings

you fwrent the excitement of freezing your eggs and this new beginning to finding out about that diagnosis how did you deal with all of it? >> i mean, to say it was a shock, i think would be an understatement prior to that day, i had no experience with cancer i didn't have anyone in my immediate circle that had been diagnosed. so it was the last thing on my mind and then all of a sudden i went from being the one diagnosed myself, so it came with a lot of fear a lot of questions just a lot of unknown >> as you said, it's hard to say the word when you're talking about cancer, but you were one of the lucky ones in the sense that they did find it. they found it early. you had surgery? >> correct. >> and now you've been in remission for six years. you're cancer free. >> yeah, six years so they found it extremely early. and the plan was to have surgery to remove my right ovary as long as it hadn't progressed, that would be it

if it had, it would be chemotherapy >> because she had this ultrasound, and the surgery she was lucky enough to find it. >> yeah. >> but most women aren't having those procedures >> no. it was what we call an incidental finding and it saved her life and you hear a story like this, as a woman, and as a medical provider, you say how is it possible that in this day and age we don't have a reliable screening test for ovarian cancer, one of the most we know aggressive cancers again, if you're at average risk there is no recommendation to get an ultrasound, no recommendation to do blood work. a point from hr story and what morgan went through, what can we learn from this. my biggest message here is that you don't know if you're at risk unless you ask and so you reach out to your healthcare provider and you say, am i at higher risk for ovarian cancer is there a family history i'm not aware of am i a candidate for genetic testing. in some cases maybe ultra

sounds, et cetera, can be done but it is one of these stories that's heartwarming for you, but for the rest of us, you sit there and say, wow we talk about the symptoms of ovarian cancer. >> i wanted to ask that mfl morgan is here because she wanted to sound the alarm. i went on a deep dive. what are the symptoms of ovarian cancer. >> very generic. >> bloating. pelvic pain. urinary symptoms we also say common things are common if you're experiencing some of these symptoms, you don't have to rush to alarm button and say, oh my god, this is what it is. if you're having these symptoms and they're persistent and not another explanation for them, you absolutely need to researching and making sure it's nothing serious. >> did you have any of those symptoms >> no. i mean, that's what's so scary about this i had no symptoms. i didn't miss any doctors appointments i'm super on top of that part of it that part was really challenging

for me because there really weren't any symptoms i think at the point that my cancer was at, it was too early, which i'm grateful for, but there really weren't any of those symptoms that are presented later. >> frankly an ultrasound wouldn't have found it either because you had to do the surgery to find the cancer that you had. >> correct yeah and the ultrasound didn't. it found the initial cyst that was benign because of where it was placed, there was no way of finding it. >> if you do have those symptoms and persist and time to go see a doctor, but the time you're seeing those symptoms is it generally more advanced? more morgan it was stage i. >> that's why she was asymptomatic. >> by the symptoms, stage iii and stage iv. >> analogous tocreatic cancer we don't have mamo, pap smear for ovarian cancer

time for game time we have a little bit of soy sauce. your favorite hot sauce. some brown sugar you want to throw in some of that paprika for me. please and some dijon mustard and marinate these for up to 24 hours. >> oh, great >> get all of that flavor in there. and then we'll do something different. >> a sharmula. an herbaceous, bright sauce. here we have some scallions, i love chilies and i like it spicy, but if you don't, you can take them out or leave out the seeds. some garlic, sumac, olive oil, of course, and finally, a little lemon juice. and i'll mix that up all right. here we have our white sauce you always need something to dip, am i right? we have yogurt, mayonnaise, and a little bit of creme fraiche in here some black pepper.

good morning. 8:56. i'm marcus washington. a rude awakening before dawn for one south bay bakery. police in san jose investigating after a truck rammed through its door front. the business's owner says several people exited the vehicle, stealing lotto scratchers before running from the scene. he also said thieves have targeted that store before. this happened about 4:00 in the morning in a strip mall on center road near the los lagos golf course. kris sanchez will have an update during our midday newscast.
