universities. yesterday, the pause that lasted more than three and a half years came to an end, which means those monthly payments will start up again. however, not all borrowers' bills will be due starting right now. the department of education is encouraging people to log onto their federal student aid portals and check who their servicer is, because it could have changed over the past three plus years. for those struggling to pay, the department has implemented the new save plan, that's an income-driven repayment plan aimed to ease the burden on borrowers. it could significantly lower your monthly payments if you qualify. >> if you make less than about $15 an hour or more if you have a family to support, you don't have to pay anything. that's because we think student loans shouldn't come before necessities like rent and foot. >> not only is this plan supposed to be easier for people to qualify for, it's supposed to be easier to fill out the application for it.
6:07 am
>> reporter: if you miss a payment, the department of education also set up a 12-month on-ramp program, that means borrowers won't be reported to credit or debt collection agencies for a year. however, your interest will still be accruing. all details for payment plans can be accessed at the studentaid.gov website. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 6:06 right now. all eyes focused on a manhattan courtroom today. the civil trial surrounding former president donald trump's business practices is expected to get under way this morning. drew petrimoulx joins us live from washington to break down what we're going to see. despite this looming legal battle we're seeing, the former president is certainly not taking a break from the campaign trail. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, laura. ahead of today's trial the former president was on the campaign trial and on the offensive.
