workers are walking for. why are they walking out? >> reporter: staffing and wages are the two biggest concerns among these workers here outside kaiser walnut creek. at 6:00, a couple minutes ago, they officially started their strike. you can see a number of workers are out here right now getting ready to picket. there will be more than 37,000 employees from kaiser walnut creek, and from other kaiser locations in northern california that will be striking. there are roughly about 40,000 more workers hitting the picket lines throughout the rest of the state and other states. the workers are upset about how much they are being paid and the lack of staffing, they say, which has made it difficult to take vacations and has led to burnout. the union that represents these workers claims a poll found that two-thirds of members have seen patient care delayed or denied due to short-staffing. kaiser has disputed those results.
6:04 am
the jobs affected include e.r. and x-ray technicians, ultrasound sonographers, and customer service workers, among others. kaiser says it continues to work toward an agreement, but has plans in place to ensure what they say would be high-quality care if these workers continue to strike. again, it's a three-day strike. the provider also claims to have the highest total compensation in every market where it operates. >> it has really been tough across the country in terms of staffing shortages associated with the great retirement, the great burnout. but the fact of the matter is kp has been doing better than others in terms of retaining our employees. >> we understand that it's a national shortage, but we can also see the profits that we make. we think that it's unfair that they're not investing in the people that are doing the labor. >> reporter: doctors and registered nurses, they are not involved in this strike, and the

time. >> you're going to have to wear it several times. we're thinking about that, because it's october. but it definitely feels very hot. we're going to have a cooldown about the end of the weekend, early next week. we have to deal with the heat for now. as we take a look at the golden gate bridge, it's a clear start. we're also going to have warm weather as you make your way into some of the valleys. let's check out napa, starting out at 8:00 this morning at 60 degrees. then at noon it is already 83 degrees, and we're headed for 90 today. so plan accordingly. some of those outdoor activities, plan them around the weather, because the temperatures will change drastically from the morning to the afternoon. and the seven-day forecast is already up, with several days of these highs in the 90s, reaching 91 in east san jose, 92 in gilroy this afternoon, and san jose headed for 88 degrees. we'll see a lot of upper 80s,
6:20 am
low 90s for the east bay, pleasanton hitting 91, in oakland 87 degrees. even warming up for the coast. daly city 79, and 89 in palo alto, and in san francisco reaching 84 downtown, the outer sunset 78, and 90 in novato. also 90 in napa and clear lake. we're watching that forecast because of the air show heading into the weekend. you may want to pick the day and the kind of weather you like as to what day you'll go to the air show. friday it's in the low 80s, nice and warm. still pretty warm on saturday. just a little cooler, but a significant cooldown in the forecast on sunday, upper 60s. we may have to watch out for the fog. as we take a look at the satellite and radar, you can see the clouds pushing away from us. that's what we usually see with a much dryer pattern and the offshore winds, which also tends to heat up even the coastal areas this time of year. the storm track is riding up and over that ridge of high pressure, so it's not even close
6:21 am
to us for now. but once that ridge starts to break down, rain chances come back, and by early next week we could see at least some rain in northern california. the north bay will have the best chance of seeing the rain, but the storm system is weakening before it gets here. there may be a much bigger cooldown after that for next weekend, and, also, a better chance of rain. so we're looking across the region to see how much rain is in the forecast, and for us, it's not a lot. farther to the north, there could be some decent rainfall totals, about 1 to possibly 2 inches, but that's up around eureka and ukiah, farther to the north. we're looking at hot temperatures between now and saturday. our inland areas will continue to reach into the 90s. it's going to be well above average. and for san francisco, we're going to head for the low to mid-80s, which is going to be warm between now and friday, but we do start that cooling trend from saturday into sunday.
6:22 am
and, mike, do you have one more check back at the fire in oakland? >> yeah, considerably different situation. earlier a fire, flames, flaring, and the flashing lights. now just a little bit of activity off of independence road. that's not affecting the over-crossing. no lanes of the nimitz are impacted and no more distraction. so traffic really calmed down over the last ten minutes in both directions. north, heading toward the bay bridge, just a bit of slowing. the fire was north of the coliseum complex. everything getting toward the bay bridge is just fine. everything is okay, heading toward the bay bridge is good. some folks may have decided to change, and instead of heading past the fire, they might have headed toward the san mateo bridge. i've been seeing no extra traffic through the area. east bay back to normal. the fire at the coliseum complex clear. bay bridge backup standard as folks get into the city. today and tomorrow, lots of activity at city hall for
