approved, most everyone agrees will be a huge help. san francisco comes into focus as a possible side for a high-stakes meeting. the new reports president biden may be contemplating. plus, the countdown to niners/cowboys. we'll take you live to levi's for what fans can expect during an all-important game. this is "today in the bay." yes, you made it. it is friday. good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute. hopefully it's light out there for our friday. what about the forecast? kari is still tracking this heat. >> it's going to be very hot today. today is the peak of the heat as we reach into the upper 90s in some spots. but a lot of 80s here. you want to make sure you're planning your day around those temperatures and trying to get in the outdoor activities before it gets really hot going into the afternoon. when we take a look at what's

normal for this time of year, santa rosa is usually at about 80 degrees, but we're headed for 94 today. san francisco reaching 87 degrees. we are usually in the low 70s. oakland reaching 90 this afternoon, with a normal high temperature of 73 degrees. we're usually a lot milder than this as we deal with heat that's going to ramp up to the upper 80s today, and it's going to be pretty hot tomorrow as well, especially for the inland valleys. so we'll have more on this, and also some events going on this weekend. mike, you were looking for a traffic break. >> heading toward powell, exactly where we're looking. it may be just on the other side, the traffic coming here off of the bay bridge. reports of a motorcycle crash. it's opposite your commute direction at the berkeley curve. we see slowing at the toll plaza that's unrelated. so far, it looks like everything

is maintaining a smooth drive getting away from the bay bridge. in san francisco, there is a crash at the 5th street off-ramp. otherwise, everything moves well. back to you. 5:02 right now. today is the final day in the three-day strike impacting kaiser health care facilities everywhere. we have a live look at san jose medical center. quiet now, but keep in mind, 75,000 kaiser workers across six states and washington, d.c. are striking. about half of that total is located in northern california. doctors and registered nurses are not part of the strike, and while temperatures and emergency rooms remain open, many nonessential procedures are being postponed. new hiccups this morning in oakland's prolonged search for a new police chief. the application window is being extended, according to the "chronicle," which cites a statement from city administrators saying the applications will now be accepted through next friday. the previous deadline was last friday. critics will be quick to point

out that oakland has now been without even a short list of candidates since leronne armstrong's firing in early february. right now the police commission is at a standstill due to in-fighting. oakland is making way for hundreds of new license plate readers. last night the commission authorized the plan. it calls for 300 cameras to be placed in certain crime hot spots. supporters argue the cameras will help police track down criminals in real time. some commissioners are raising concerns over privacy issues. >> we don't want to put any information in the system and then officers yank the wrong people out of the car for the wrong thing. >> police say the information will be thoroughly vetted. the proposal now heads to oakland city council. new reports this morning, president biden may be planning a face-to-face meeting in san

francisco with chinese leader xi jinping. the meeting would take place next month and the white house is still trying to nail it down. the meeting is, quote, pretty firm, and u.s. and china are working to improve relations from recent setbacks over issues, including taiwan, spying, even the ongoing dispute over the origin of covid. sunday night football is taking over levi's stadium. >> that's when two teams, the niners and cowboys, try to settle things up in santa clara. "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live. the faithful definitely will not be the only ones watching. >> reporter: correct, the entire country will be watching sunday night. good morning to you, laura and marcus. you were talking about two teams who have fan bases who are famously devoted to their respective teams, and there are a few games every season that stick out. this would be one of those games. the country will be watching the

49ers and cowboys on sunday night at levi's stadium behind me in santa clara. are the niners worried about the spotlight, the pressure of sunday night football? maybe, maybe not. this was the team yesterday at practice. all eyes will be on brock purdy. he's 10-1 as the 49ers starting quarterback. his only loss, the playoff game in philadelphia, where he got hurt last season. >> every possession and down, it means a lot. and so in this kind of game when you've got two really good defenses on both sides of the ball, man, how can you eliminate the turnovers, play smart, and when you get in the red zone, execute and be able to score touchdowns. obviously the field goals are great, but to win these kinds of games, we've got to score touchdowns. >> we look back and whoever won this game in the playoffs would go on to the super bowl. these are two of the most storied franchises in history. dallas wins a lot of games. when you meet up on sunday night

through sunday. one of our camera crews caught a glimpse in san leandro. this year one angels pilot is making history, lieutenant commander amanda lee, the team's first female pilot. >> i hope that she is viewed as every other member of this team. she's here because she's a qualified naval officer and aviator, and i hope she is an inspiration to everybody. >> the best spots to view includes chrissy field to pier 39. it will include a tribute to the late senator dianne feinstein. for everything fleet week, we've got you covered. head over to nbcbayarea.com, click on the link in our trending bar. kari, the views there should be absolutely beautiful because it's going to be warmer there. so less likely to have that fog. we are going to have some clear visibility for that, as

well as heading through most of the weekend. we are in the upper 80s and low 90s there for today in the middle of the afternoon. so no issues with visibility. for tomorrow, we're in the upper 70s. it's also going to be bright and sunny. when the temperatures cool down on sunday and we're in the upper 60s, we'll be watching out for areas of fog, most likely clearing by the air show. we are really hot today, reaching 95 in san jose and 94 in napa, upper 80s and low 90s for much of the peninsula, and not much of a change tomorrow. we're still looking at some hot valley temperatures that are up to 98 degrees in livermore, sunday we're going to see temperatures coming down just a bit. we'll be in the mid-80s for san jose, which is the temperature we're expecting for kickoff on sunday for that 49ers game. mike, you've got to gas up before all these weekend activities. >> we have a new one on the leaderboard as well, $4.89, national petroleum on mission boulevard. that's in union city.

san jose has $5.09, diamond gas and matter on story road, and san francisco's shell, $5.39, the one on harrison street. it's right next to the chp office. on the roadways, a smooth drive. no major issues. it is friday, so a lighter volume. we didn't expect this slowing on highway 4, a crash just popped up at summerville. we're going to get more detail when chp arrives. 880 slows down a bit as you lose a couple of lanes approaching the coliseum. not visible from our camera. this lasts possibly until 6:00 a.m., so there may be more build out of oakland and heading past the coliseum. scott? >> mike, coming up on "today in the bay," it is jobs friday, so we'll get the jobs number. wall street says, not too much, keep it down. scott, take a look at this

it is 5:13. let's get a look at gilroy and what to expect with our day planner. low 60s at 8:00. a nice, cool morning, but it's already hot at noon, reaching the upper 80s and reaching 98 degrees at 4:00 today. plan accordingly and stay hydrated. we'll get a look at our hot weekend temperatures in a few minutes. the berkeley curve looks like the earlier traffic break has been cleared. might be closer to powell, but not a problem. we'll track the rest of your build coming up. good morning. happy friday to you. it's jobs friday. san francisco's levi's says higher gas prices, bigger mortgage payments, all affecting the ability for you, apparently, to buy blue jeans. sales are down. sales were lower than expected at tesla as well. more about them in a second. let's talk about jobs. labor department will release the september jobs numbers in

about 15 minutes. economists figure the u.s. economy added about 175,000 jobs last month and they expect the employment rate to stick -- or unemployment rate to stick near historic lows. a number more than 175,000 would be considered bad news by many. more isn't better when you're the fed. you're trying to slow down the economy. a big jobs number today would worry wall street because they would figure more interest rates were ahead. it's already been a lousy few weeks. the dow is negative for the year at this point. there are job cuts to talk about. san francisco's flexport is laying off again, 30% more of its workforce. they have a new ceo. he's making big changes. the company deals with freight and warehouses. tesla is cutting prices. it may sell the most popular car, the model 3, but it's not selling enough of them.

one person called 911. when firefighters responded, they agreed to, shall we say, let it burn, calling it an amazing display. if you're looking from across the street, whoa! >> they did a great job. it's frightening. >> we were talking about that, mike and i, because there's those projectors, you put up a screen and it looks like bloody hands on the windows or that fire. there's different ways you can do it. but it's just basically a screen that you put on the window and it does a show. >> our producer was telling us that the new movie, the editor was editing and one of the neighbors thought somebody was being murdered because outline of the screaming from the editing of the movie. >> maybe put out a note to your neighbors. >> what happened to scarecrows and pumpkins? >> that was 2022.

>> i like to keep it nice. >> as you're putting up the decorations this weekend, the pumpkins are just going to melt. >> oh, no. the caramel apples are going to melt. we have hot temperatures ahead. at least it's cool in the mornings. we're seeing starts anywhere from the mid-50s in the north bay to 72 right now in martinez, 73 in los gatos. we are seeing a range in temperatures for the start of our morning and this is where we're headed. it's going to be heating up all across the bay area, with upper 90s expected today. los gatos reaching 99 degrees and 95 in san jose. much of the east bay reaching into the upper 90s, and even oakland hitting 90 degrees this afternoon, and reaching 96 in livermore. and half moon bay up to 85, another beach day, and in the low 90s in redwood city. san francisco, back into the upper 80s and low 90s this

afternoon, and reaching 94 in santa rosa, 90 in napa. we are seeing a large area of high pressure causing a lot of heat across the region, and the storm track is being driven well to the north of us. but as the high pressure breaks down, we're going to see the return of the rain chances early next week. so we're looking at about monday to the tuesday timeframe, the possibility of some showers moving in. but it looks like most of the rain is staying north of us. we'll see the temperatures heating up, once again, and possibly by next weekend we could see some more very warm weather, which, of course, increases the fire danger as we get to the peak of how dry the vegetation is. then as far as rain that we could see for next week, possibly about a half inch of rain in these areas in green for parts of the north bay. most of the rest of the bay area is really not going to see much more than a couple of sprinkles. we look at our inland temperatures going from upper 90s today, really high heat, and

the heat advisory continues into tomorrow evening as well. it will be a little milder on sunday, but still pretty warm. we get a little bit of a break from the heat for the first part of next week as the rain chances increase. low 80s for the middle of next week inland. san francisco keeping an eye on what's happening because of fleet week and the air shows. we're going to have a big change in temperatures, going from 90 today to upper 60s by the end of the weekend. mike, how is it looking in the tri-valley? >> we're looking toward dublin, traffic flows very well on 580, out of the altamont with mild slowing to the dublin interchange. getting to 580, there may be an issue. a crash reported southbound at vasco road, coming just past gate 23. we saw a little slowing. everything should be off to the shoulder. we'll track that travel time. still under 15 minutes as you travel off of marsh creek road. a little slow toward the carquinez bridge.

we want to get started with a look at the forecast because it has been a hot one out there. meteorologist kari hall has more hot news for us. >> we set a record yesterday in half moon bay, reaching 90 degrees during the middle of the afternoon, when our old record was just 82 degrees. so it did heat up even along the coastline and it's going to be another hot day today. a heat advisory going into effect starting again at 11:00 this morning, and continuing through tomorrow evening. we're looking at temperatures in the upper 80s to near 100 degrees. make sure you're reducing outdoor activity, drinking more water and there's an increased risk of heat related illness. looking at the commute, we are going to see temperatures in the east bay in the mid-60s. it does ramp up quickly, going into the mid-80s at noon and eventually reaching back into the low to mid-90s for much of the bay area. mike, you have more info on the crash near vasco road. >> it involves a deer, and we know this time of year we do

hear about deer crossing the road. it's the season right now. this is the third incident involving a deer in contra costa county in the last, i would say, couple of days. we're looking at southbound 880 heading down toward the coliseum. we do still have road work. the crew should be clearing over the next half hour. slow from fruitvale down past the scene. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. from the skies to theseas, fleet week hitting overdrive. today is one of the most visual events, the parade of ships. >> thom jensen is live for us in san francisco this morning. i understand there's going to be a tribute planned for the late senator dianne feinstein. >> reporter: and, really -- good morning to both of you -- of all of the flights this week, they're really dedicated to her, according to one of the pilots we talked to who grew up in san francisco, who said he was inspired by fleet week and the

flyovers here. a great place to see all of the shows here, marina boulevard, where we are at marina green, where a lot of the military equipment is staged, or up the road at chrissy field where large groups will, no doubt, gathering to see the air shows this week. and they are really all dedicated to the late senator, who brought fleet week here way back in 1981 as mayor, and then was a champion for the defense services as a senator. the blue angels honored the late senator with a flyover at her memorial thursday, and one of the pilots told nbc bay area they're all thinking of her when they step into their cockpits this week. >> she's been such a champion for the united states and for the city of san francisco, and really responsible, in large part, in getting fleet week here and having the blue angels here. >> reporter: the lieutenant commander actually grew up in san francisco, and he said fleet week flyovers and the celebration itself inspired him

to become a naval aviator and a blue angel pilot. today's air show starts at 12:43 with the national anthem, flag jumps, then the navy parachute team, and at 2:16 an f35 flyover. at 3:15, the blue angels will do their aerial stunts over the bay. there will be a couple more dedicated flights by a civilian pilot team both saturday and sunday afternoon. watch for those schedules. we'll keep you up to date. we're live in san francisco, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thank you. well, developing now, a south bay pumpkin patch in shambles, and police are looking for who did it. vandals late wednesday caused some serious destruction there to spina farms in morgan hill. workers say the security guard on duty actually confronted four

people, and it's believed that one of them may have somehow dropped their cell phone. >> she held her own and, no, i'm calling the police. they all took off when they heard the police were coming. >> law enforcement tells us they did, in fact, receive a cell phone as evidence, but at this point they're not talking specifically about who the phone belongs to. happening today, an east bay couple charged in connection with the abuse and death on a toddler in their care will make their first court appearance. news of the toddler's death first came down on monday. at the time it was being called a bathtub drowning. prosecutors say investigators later learned the suspects abused and tortured the child and the prolonged abuse led to the unidentified toddler's death. the couple, a 22-year-old and 21-year-old, are accused of the prolonged abuse of a second child as well, an infant. 5:35 right now. the infamous former gynecologist

accused of abusing hundreds of women over decades has been found dead in his home. the 76-year-old was awaiting trial for more than a dozen sex crimes, but was free on bail and living in his l.a. home, where authorities found him yesterday. the cause of death has not been given, but foul play is not suspected. a live look in san jose this morning. this is where transit leaders have now given their approval on a plan for 200 new tiny homes. the homes will be built in vt a's cerone yard. last night board members approved it, after giving into the pressure from san jose city council. vta preferred to have the homes be spread out over several properties, and wanted assurances for adequate security. but, ultimately, they approved unanimously. mayor matt mahan is applauding the teamwork. >> as the public held us accountable for working together and getting to an outcome and

taking bold action, we got there. this is just one step, one site. the truth is, we need many more. >> right now, there's still no timeline, but the vta's lease with the city runs for the next five years. well, a lot of talk ahead of sunday night's huge 49ers/cowboys game, naturally focusing on brock purdy. what about the guy whose narrative is essentially turning upside down? >> last year the faithful were talking about trey lance as the niners quarterback of the future, but now he's backup on the cowboys. as such, he'll likely not see the field this week, but the niners are half-jokingly saying he may have a big impact. typically one team's former player can provide his team important insight for game planning purposes. everyone agrees, the nfl is a copycat league and coaches are the first to say being on the field will tell you much more

than any former member team. a reminder, the game airs here on nbc bay area with coverage starting at 4:00 p.m., and after, you can watch a special newscast from levi's. maybe you're lucky enough to head to the game. kari is taking a look at the forecast of what fans can expect. >> it will be warm with temperatures in the mid-80s and breezy winds throughout the game. we are also going to see a partly cloudy sky. at least it won't be in the mid-90s. it's going to be a little better than the weather we're going to see for this afternoon. hot temperatures out there in napa for the blues, brews and bbq festival. we're going to have spicy weather, reaching into the low 90s for the middle of the day. there's also the san carlos art and wine fair. that's going on throughout the weekend, and we're going to have some warm temperatures, starting out in the upper 70s at noon when things begin to really get going. as we go throughout the day,

headed for the upper 80s, and under all that sunshine, you want to wear some sunscreen. if you're enjoying a nice day in sonoma valley, it is going to be hot. definitely shorts and short sleeve weather. look at the change in temperatures from the morning to the afternoon. so we're going from mid-50s to the mid-90s. we'll do it all over again tomorrow. it will be a little milder for sunday. if you're getting away and heading to palisades tahoe, it's going to be in the low 70s today. the morning temperatures dropping down to the upper 30s. then we make it back up into the mid-70s. a big range in temperatures as well there in the sierra. big sur is going to be heating up today, reaching into the low 90s. we have great beach weather. keep in mind, if you do go to the beach, the water temperature is still in the 50s. that makes it very dangerous, especially with the big waves and rip currents. we're going to talk more about what to expect throughout the weekend. mike, you're checking out

the south bay. >> this is the normal northbound slowing, even on a friday, with a lighter volume, we still see the sensors change at about 5:40. that's going on right now for the morning, pretty predictable. this evening there is a concert at the s.a.p. center, and i have on good authority from a millennial that there will be lots of excited millennials. that will be at 8:00 p.m. tonight, so watch for young adults seeing that group. southbound 880, a slower drive just for the construction crews, and they should be clearing over the next few minutes. there's another crew clearing heading toward the golden gate bridge. and in the city, there's fleet week and also a concert at chase center. this one is santos. saying one final farewell. >> we miss you and you will always, always be my sunshine. >> relatives, politicians,

"the new york times" and abc are reporting trump revealed secrets about america's submarine program to a foreigner, an austrailian. that man is on the list of witnesses who may testify against trump in one of his upcoming trials. nbc has not verified independently that reporting, which abc and "the new york times" attributes to sources close to the investigation and the former president. the house of representatives is still looking for a speaker. they're back to work today. former president trump has endorsed ohio's jim jordan, but also says he'll be at the capitol next tuesday, the same day they vote, and told fox news he would consider taking that role for himself for a short time. there's no rule the speaker of the house has to be a member of the house. but there is a rule he or she can't be facing a felony charge, which trump is.

of the closet, like, what do i wear today? it's in the low 70s at 9:00 in oakland, and then we're headed for the low 90s as we go into the middle of the afternoon. so definitely layers are best because you want to be able to peel them off and put them back on as temperatures change. upper 90s today in morgan hill, 99 in los gatos and milpitas today reaching 94 degrees. we're also looking at a lot of mid to upper 90s for much of the east bay. 98 in concord, and also another hot one today for parts of the coastline, half moon bay reaching 85, and 92 in palo alto. upper 80s, low 90s, again, in san francisco. for the north bay, reaching 95 in sonoma. as we go into the next several days, we are going to have a significant cooldown. we're still hot today and tomorrow. sunday is looking better. then we're in the mid-70s early next week, and then gradually we'll start to warm up, once

again. we are seeing a big rise in the storm track as we get that high pressure blocking it and giving us the hot temperatures and the offshore winds. we are expecting the cooler temperatures to come along with a chance of rain early next week, but it looks like most of the rain stays well to the north of us. then we go back to warm and dry weather for the end of next week. we take a look at our seven-day forecast. big changes ahead. this time of year we also see quite a range in our temperatures, from one day to the next. we're definitely going to see that, with upper 90s for today, then in the mid-70s next tuesday. mike, you're watching a crash. what's going on right now? >> we have a number of crashes, most of them not really of note. this one, north 238, off the castro y, is in the middle of the roadway. chp is sorting things out and they have to clear the roadway as it's building off the dublin grade. southbound 680, a new crash

olympics has started, with the big event less than a year away. officials are facing a big problem ahead of the games, unwelcome pests are ravaging the city. viral videos on social media show bugs, bed bugs in hotels, theatres and trains. it's leaving a lot of people on edge. the french government is citing increased travel and the bug's resistance to insecticides as the major reason for the boom. most could care less about that part of it. >> translator: it's surprising, this man says, the fact we can actually see them means there are a lot of them and they're being seen in the day when they usually come out at night. so that's a big problem. >> it sure is. city hall is calling on the prime minister to organize a conference to talk about fighting that infestation, while the transport minister is brainstorming new extermination strategies. they're everywhere, and they're worried about them coming back
