brand new job data. our scott mcgrew calls it a shocker. he's going to break down what it means for the u.s. economy, and more importantly, your wallet. a final round in the kaiser health care strike. we're going to update you on the impact and where negotiations stand this morning. the countdown to niners/cowboys. we'll take you live to levi's and look at what fans can expect before and during an all-important game. it's friday and it's "today in the bay." >> what was the last part again? >> it's friday! good morning to you all. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. >> mike is here, kari is here. we're looking forward to the weekend. what about the forecast? >> it's going to be hot. if you missed summer, it's coming back for a little while. we've had really hot temperatures. we're starting out in the mid-60s right now. as you get ready to head out, we are going to see it heating up quickly as we go throughout the morning into the afternoon. very much like yesterday's
6:01 am
numbers where we are well above average. usually at this time in october, early october, we're in the low 80s in santa rosa. but we're headed for 94 degrees. i don't think we'll set any record, because occasionally we do get these big spikes in temperatures in october with the offshore winds. in concord today we're headed for 98 degrees. we're going to be well above what's normal, and reaching into the 90s again today. san francisco back to 90, and oakland reaching 90, but we'll have more of the same heat tomorrow, before we get a bit of a break for the weekend. we'll talk more about that and look ahead to when we could see rain as well. mike, the metering lights are active. >> they are active. they're moving quickly, so that's active as well. we're looking at a backup just starting to form now. turned on at 5:45, so a little later than monday through thursday. we're looking at highway 4, still some slowing out of bay
6:02 am
point and toward concord. highway 37 starts with the slowing out of vallejo. typical spots, lighter. easier drive off of the castro valley y, i believe they're moving the vehicle at 238. southbound 680, the crash not a problem. all clear for the construction crew through oakland. back to you. >> thank you very much. let's check in with scott mcgrew with breaking economic news. >> scott, under normal circumstances this would be good economic news. >> under normal circumstances, in which we are not. let me set up the scenario so you understand. we were expecting the labor department to announce around 170,000 jobs added in the month of september. if they were higher than that, say, 200,000, that would be a sign that more interest rate hikes could be necessary to slow the economy down and slow inflation. here is what we got. 336,000 jobs added. that is far more than we expected, and economists are revising upward previous months'
6:03 am
estimates as well. 3.6% unemployment rate is about where it was. that's still near historic lows. this is way too big of a number. already, the futures, the bets that wall street makes on the open are lower, the yield on the ten-year bond near a 16-year high, all showing there's fear of more and more and more interest rate hikes, which will make life for many people more expensive. all in an attempt to slow down what fundamentally, laura, is an economic freight train. >> tough news. thank you very much. it is 6:02 right now. today is the final day in the three-day strike impacting kaiser health care facilities everywhere. we have a live look this morning at kaiser's san jose medical center. you see people already gathered there. 75,000 kaiser workers across six states and washington, d.c. are striking, about half the total located in northern california. doctors and registered nurses are not part of the strike.
6:04 am
while hospitals and emergency rooms remain open, many nonessential procedures are being postponed. a new hiccup this morning in oakland's prolonged search for a new police chief. the application window is being extended according to the "chronicle," which states a statement from the administrator saying administrations will be accepted through next friday. the previous deadline was last friday and critics are quick to point out that they do not even have a short list of candidates since leronne armstrong was fired back in february. there are new details in the effort to boost police surveillance in oakland. the city making way for hundreds of new license plate readers. last night the city's privacy commission authorized the plan. it calls for 300 cameras to be placed at certain crime hot spots. supporters argue those cameras will help police track down criminals in real time. some commissioners are raising
6:05 am
concerns over privacy issues. police say that the information will be thoroughly vetted and will have a transparency website for the public. the proposal now heads to oakland's city council. new reports this morning, president biden may be planning a face-to-face meeting in san francisco with chinese leader xi jinping. according to the "washington post," the meeting would take place next month and the white house is still trying to nail it down. but the meeting is, quote, pretty firm. the u.s. and china are working to improve relations from recent setbacks including issues over taiwan, spying and the ongoing dispute over the origin of covid. switching gears now, let's talk a little football. sunday night football really taking over levi's stadium. that is when two of football's best teams, the niners and the cowboys, will try to settle things up in santa clara. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is joining us live this morning. bob, the faithful are definitely not the only ones watching. >> reporter: no, the entire country will be watching sunday
6:06 am
night, as the niners take on the cowboys behind me at levi's stadium here in santa clara. what's interesting about the game, obviously, for people in the bay area, the nine rrs playing, but nationwide you've got two fan bases who are famously devoted to their respective teams, the niners and the cowboys fan bases. there are a few games every season that stick out, and this would be one of those games. the nation will be watching the 49ers and cowboys on sunday night, and, of course, the question is, are the niners worried about the spotlight, the pressure of sunday night football? maybe, maybe not. this was the team yesterday at practice, all eyes, of course, will be on brock purdy. he's 10-1 as the 49ers starting quarterback. his only loss, the playoff game in philly where he got hurt last season. >> every possession and down, it means a lot, and so in this kind of game, you've got really good defenses on both sides of the ball, man, how can youeliminate
6:07 am
the turnovers, play smart and execute and actually score touchdowns. field goals are great and getting points are great, but to win we've got to score touchdowns. >> we look back and whoever won this game in the playoffs would go on to the super bowl. these are two of the most storied franchises in history. dallas wins a lot of games, 49ers win a lot of games. when you meet up on sunday night football, it is a big deal. our fan bases love it, we love it. overall it's going to be a fantastic football game. >> reporter: that, of course, george kittle, 49ers star tight end. he believes that the cowboys will be the best team the niners have played so far this season. reporting live here outside levi's stadium in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. >> you can watch it all. our coverage starts sunday with a pregame newscast at 3:00 in the afternoon, nbc's football night in america kicks off an

hour later, set for around 5:20. 6:07 right now. a live look in san francisco. this is where the city, once again, is going to hear that mighty roar of the blue angels in just a matter of hours. ah, that sound. this is the scene from san leandro yesterday during the practice run. the blue angels take to the skies today, saturday and sunday afternoon, but the recommended spots, chrissy field and pier 39 in san francisco. >> should be a nice weekend to get out there and enjoy the big show, kari. it's going to be beautiful, but warm. and at least we don't, for most of the weekend, have to worry about any visibility issues. we have a lot of sunshine in the forecast and warm weather, as we get a look at what to expect. make sure you bring a bottled water, make sure you stay hydrated. we're headed for the upper 80s
6:09 am
today. tomorrow, we're still near 80 degrees, but it will be a little more comfortable. now, we'll have to watch out for some areas of fog by the end of the weekend on sunday, up to about 69 degrees. that's going to be very nice and comfortable as well. we're still dealing with the heat today, headed for 90 degrees in san francisco, 94 in napa and novato, and upper 90s for morgan hill. fairfield reaching 97 degrees and los gatos reaching 91. heading into the day tomorrow, it's still just as hot. even for the coastline. we have great beach weather. for the inland valleys, we have a last blast of summer before we get a nice little cooldown for the end of the weekend. it's going to be in the 70s and low 80s. mike, it's been hard for you to find some lower gas prices. >> we're trying with the help of our friends through
6:10 am
gasbuddy.com. we have a new one on the leaderboard, $4.89 at national petroleum on national boulevard, union city. next up, san jose at $5.09 at diamond gas and mart on story road. san francisco, $5.39, next to the chp office. roadways, friday, lighter build is on. the bay bridge metering lights are on. slowing for highway 37, highway 4 a little build, you may spy a crash in walnut creek. that's northbound 680. not a major issue. there was a shift, things completely cleared up for all these lanes. now the build on for the middle lanes. the metering lights were activated 25 minutes ago. there is slowing here toward walnut creek. highway 4 shows a slower drive, over a half hour. most of the slowing is in concord. back to you. 6:10 right now. are you looking for a new car? tesla rolling back prices again.
6:11 am
coming up, the economic forces driving that change and the added incentive it may be if you're in the market. america's favorite nfl mom, mama kelce, travis and jason's mom, sits right at the center of football and pop culture these days. how does she feel about it all?
6:12 am
6:13 am
good friday morning. we're heading over to pittsburg, and we're starting out with mid-60s, as we wake up to
6:14 am
sunshine this morning. it's going to be another hot one in the delta today, reaching into the mid-90s for the afternoon, and even 90s for parts of the coastline and in san francisco. we're going to talk about the high heat and what's ahead when we finally see rain coming up in a few minutes. clear right now at the golden gate bridge. nice, steady flow of headlights from the top of the screen out of the robin williams tunnel across into san francisco. crews have cleared, a light drive out of the north bay right now. good morning. happy friday to you. if you tuned to us at the top of the hour, you already know what happened with the jobs number. 336,000 jobs added in september. that's an enormous number. economists were looking for a number around 170,000. 336,000 jobs. and statisticians look back at some of the previous estimates and revised those upwards.
6:15 am
unemployment rate stays near historic lows. under any normal circumstance, big growth in the economy would be good news, but not if you're the fed. not if you're trying to slow down the economy with interest rate hikes, and they're not working. look for higher interest rates in the future, making cars for expensive, credit card payments higher, and of course mortgages harder to get. other news, tesla is cutting prices again. it may be the manufacturer of the nation's most popular car t model 3, but it's not selling enough of them. the company is constantly lowering prices. the model 3 is now $38,900 at base, the long range model $45,900. they dropped the performance model, $2,000 off. we were talking earlier this week about an unusual podcast, sand hill road. it's with a ceo known mercy
6:16 am
grace. i've known mercy for several years now, but she surprised me by telling me a story from her childhood. >> we had a sort of failed apocalypse. so when i was 4 years old, we lived in a bomb shelter under the down of livington, montana, for, i think, like, two days or something like that. it became clear, yeah, russia is not going to nuke us, this isn't the apocalypse. >> you can find sand hill road on your pad cast player, iphone, spotify or alexa. it is a fascinating story, how she got into and out of that bomb shelter, and what was going on at the time. it is a very interesting story. >> interesting. sounds good. >> thanks, scott. new at 6:00, think caviar, wagyu and shopping in three stories of luxury. that's what restoration hardware
6:17 am
plans to bring to palo alto. these renderings show what their new building is expected to look like. right now, there's still no timeline for a groundbreaking or an actual opening, but once it happens, i'll be there. >> i'm going, too, then. let's talk about something else a lot of people, i'm sure, have been talking about. donna kelce has spent a lot of time on the football field. she has two sons, travis and jason in the nfl. >> what do you mean, travis kelce? today mama kelce is in studio 1a, in true mom style donna kelce brought a little tupperware full of warm cookies. the anchors enjoyed it, telling her she could sell them. she talked about supporting both her sons in the super bowl, and her own newfound fame. >> how have you adjusted to
6:18 am
this, can i have a selfie, mama kelce? >> it's kind of crazy, but, you know, you just treat everybody with respect and kindness, and they return it to me. >> that's nice. she talks about all things football, sharing a stadium box with the one and only taylor swift recently, too. you can catch the full conversation at 7:00 a.m. right after "today in the bay." >> mama kelce's cookies. >> she deserves that fame. do you know how many games, little league games she probably drove those boys to? >> do you remember when michael phelps mom became kind of a celebrity? >> i love that. >> i do, too. >> i love her custom-made fits, the jackets with the jerseys. pretty good. we're going to be watching that this weekend. also, it's going to be really hot. so it's going to feel like summer as we are starting out with a cool, refreshing start to our friday morning. it's in the upper 50s in dublin. if you head over to concord, it
6:19 am
is 64 degrees, and it's 71 in martinez. let's get a look at redwood city. we start out with mid-60s. it's going to be another sunny day, and quickly heating temperatures. at noon we're at 83 degrees and continuing to rise as we go into the rest of today, eventually making it back into the 90s. we're headed for 99 in los gatos today, and downtown san jose reaching 95 degrees. also, upper 90s for much of the south county, as well as the inland east bay, with walnut creek reaching 97. 90 today in oakland. we're still looking at some hot temperatures near record. we did set a record yesterday in half moon bay. it's going to be very close again for this afternoon. reaching 92 in palo alto. in the low 90s in the mission district, mostly 80s across the rest of san francisco, and up to 94 in santa rosa today. let's take a look at walnut creek, because our temperatures have been really hot.
6:20 am
normally we're in the low 80s. we're up to 96 this afternoon. then we do see temperatures starting to dip as we head toward the end of the weekend. such a drastic change. give it a few days. we'll be in the low 70s for a high on monday and tuesday. so we have all kinds of weather in this forecast as the high pressure breaks down, the storm track returns to the region. we are seeing quite a bit of rain, especially for the pacific northwest. it looks like a lot of that kind of dries up before it gets here. then we see a little bit of a rebound in temperatures for the end of next week, possibly more rain ahead. as we talk about how much rain we could see here, the areas in green show about three-tenths of an inch for the north bay. much of the bay area may not see much at all, maybe a few hundredths of an inch of rain next monday into tuesday. our temperatures, once again, making a drastic dip as we go toward the beginning of next week, after such a hot weekend,
6:21 am
reaching into the mid to upper 90s, feeling a little better on sunday. if you like the fall-like weather, you'll get that for a few days early next week. we're also looking at temperatures in san francisco that are going to be cooling off as well. mike, you were taking a look at the san mateo bridge? >> yeah, it's starting to get more crowded here, but not bad. fridays are a little lighter, the build will really kick in after the 7:00 hour. we have a smooth drive coming toward me, it looks like everything is clear on north 238 just off the castro valley y. a smooth drive to and from the dublin grade. 680, the dublin interchange moving slowly. 880 slow through hayward. you saw the volume on the san mateo bridge. holding steady for highway 4, so contra costa county, no problems. this crash is northbound, counter-commute. smooth the 24 interchange into
6:22 am
the caldecott. 37, no major problems there. the bay bridge toll plaza meeting lights were turned on at 5:44. and we have only this backup in the middle of the lanes. we see more traffic coming off of 880. no problems right now through that stretch. the peninsula at speed, the south bay not showing any slowing sensors. so far, it just looks like a lighter friday drive. back to you. >> we'll take it. thanks, mike. 6:21 right now. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> our team has put millions of dollars back in people's pockets. today we're highlighting some of our
