good morning. >> reporter: yeah. we're here in texas' rio grande valley where we could see 20 additional miles of this border barrier go up on the land separating the u.s. from mexico. this comes after homeland security says they encountered more than a quarter million migrants trying to cross through this sector in the last year alone. despite this new construction, this does not represent an official change in immigration policy. but we have seen president biden facing mounting pressure from both sides to do something about this ongoing migrant crisis. along parts of the southern border, the biden administration is clearing the way for construction of new sections of wall. and as pressure there is going, the administration also saying it will resume deporting venezuelan migrants. for those who traveled to the u.s. before august, the white house now saying they will remove venezuelans who arrived

after that date. illegal crossings are on the rise. the biden administration now waiving more than two dozen federal laws, to allow homeland to install barriers in texas's rio grande valley. president biden arguing his hands are tied because congress green lit the project during the trump era. >> i tried to get them to reappropriate, to redirect that money. they didn't and wouldn't. >> do you believe the border wall works? >> no. >> there will not be another foot of wall constructed on my administration. >> dhs secretary among top officials meeting with counter parts in mexico thursday said there is no change to the administration's approach. >> border security requires a smarter and more comprehensive approach. >> but it comes as a recent surge of migrants put a strain on resources from border

communities. >> we are completely overwhelmed. we are done with the finger pointing. we just want solutions. >> to states hundreds of miles away such as new york and illinois where democratic governors criticized the handling of the migrant influx. still advocates like roberto lopez with the texas civil rights project says new walls won't deter people from coming. >> people will find a way to cross. >> what do the latest numbers show on how many migrants are across in the border and what officials are expecting going forward now? >> yes. we have seen a bit of a dip since last week when we were approaching record levels. customs and border protection says on wednesday alone they encountered more than 8,000 people trying to cross illegally. this past month of september set a high 2023. that is why some are hopeful that when this barrier is built

it could hopefully drive some of those numbers down, but time will definitely tell. savannah? >> all right. morgan chesky at the border, thank you very much. in the meantime, the house remains at a standstill as republicans who forced out kevin mccarthy scrambled to find his replacement. donald trump weighed in throwing his support behind one hopeful senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. he joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the behind-the-scenes battle is still being fought, but that overnight endorsement of ohio's jim jordan could be a major marker on how the gop is plotting its future course. overnight former president trump inserting himself squarely into the speaker's weight. in a post on truth social, mr. trump writing jordan, quote, will be a great speaker of the house and has my complete and total endorsement. >> president trump did more of what he said he would do than

any president in my lifetime. >> reporter: and mr. trump had already been a looming presence in the speaker race. itself a sign of the republican party moving further to the right and becoming more pro-trump. trump saying just yesterday to fox news digital that he would accept a short-term role as speaker himself if the gop couldn't decide. >> all i can say is we'll do whatever is best for the country and for the republican party. >> reporter: it comes after former house speaker kevin mccarthy was ousted for the first time in history by eight rebel republicans led by florida's matt gaetz. >> if it's speaker jim jordan or speaker steve scalise, there will be very few conservatives in the country who don't see that as a monumental upgrade. >> reporter: both candidates for the speakership are strong

supporters but jordan is a conservative fire brand, famous for his combative industrial and a staunch trump defender during both of mr. trump's impeachments. the republican party now thrown into chaos, with their eye on the election, deeply divided as moderates still distressed by mccarthy's exit. >> we have an obligation to get back to work on behalf of the american people, to stop the interparty squabble and to focus on the issues that matter to people. >> reporter: whoever the next speaker is will have a lot on their plate, including a looming government shutdown, now just weeks away. >> what are the next steps here? >> the next official step is a closed door candidate forum, where everybody who is running is getting a chance to present their case to the congress. it is possible donald trump may come to the capitol for that. and republicans will meet again on wednesday to try to pick a candidate again behind closed doors before they go to the floor. that person will meet a majority of their conference, but there

is a ton of concern among republicans about going to the floor and failing repeatedly. so the bottom line, we could be in for a very long week next week on capitol hill. >> garrett, thank you. also this morning, millions of americans are bracing for a big change in the weather. a tropical storm is expected to bring weekend rain. the same parents that have been enjoying record heat this week. al is tracking the roller coaster for us. >> here we go. we got double trouble for the eastern sea board. got this long cold front way to the gulf, tropical storm philippe out. 50-mile-per-hour winds. right now 195 miles south of bermuda. it is moving northeast at 18 miles an hour. so here we go. this front moves into the northeast today into tomorrow

with heavy rain. philippe transitions from a post tropical system which means it has no tropical attributes to it. the storm hits maine and we're talking about heavy downpours, gusty winds. rainfall amounts anywhere from 2 to 3 but upwards of 5 inches of rain. in northern new england, clogged leaves could clog storm drains. we're watching that. much colder air. 10 million people under frost advisories, freeze watches, freeze warnings from the plains all the way to the central plains. and that's just the beginning. and as that cold air makes its way to the east, we have big changes coming. >> al, we'll check in with you later. thank you. we are getting a critical read on the economy this morning. the september unemployment report is coming out, and it's congress out amid higher interest rates and questions about whether the fed may be done hiking those rates to cool inflation. tom costello is on the story for us. >> good morning. that is the big question. is the federal reserve, have the federal reserve's efforts to

raise inflation rates, have they worked? have they affected the job's market and is that now slowing. so far we don't see evidence of that. economists are forecasting an increase of 170,000 jobs in september. that would be lower to the number of jobs added in august. the employment rate expected to drop slightly. we did get private payroll numbers this week. they were down significantly from august. we have had a lot of layoffs in the tech sector, roughly 152,000 so far including big names. that's despite a series of strikes and layoffs in the tech sector this year, including big names like google, amazon, microsoft, yahoo, meta, and zoom. inflation has been trending down.

interest rates taken off, led by the growing heights and deficits. the average interest rate, 7.49% this week. a fresh 23-year high, but a strong jobs number could mean the fed is not done hiking rates and the fact that unemployment has remained low despite this really has surprised economists. hoda? >> we'll keep you posted, thanks. the chicago bears who haven't won a game in nearly a year are back in the win column. they actually made it look easy on thursday night football. >> pass is hauled in by moore! gets free. washington gambles and lose the gamble that time. 56 yards touchdown. >> that was dj moore's third touchdown of the night. it snaps a 14-game losing streak that dated back to last october. do you think they're happy about that?

starting with fleet week. >> that's right, it's here. a live look in san francisco, which will offer some of the best views of today's parade of ships. not to mention, the roar of the blue angels. this was the scene in san leandro yesterday during the team of six's practice run. the blue angels take to the skies today, saturday and sunday afternoon. the recommended spots are chrissy field and pier 39 in san francisco. today is the final day in the three-day strike impacting kaiser health care facilities everywhere. 75,000 kaiser workers across six states and d.c. are striking. about half of that total is located in northern california. doctors and registered nurses are not part of that strike, and while hospital and emergency rooms remain open, many nonessential procedures are being postponed. let's get a look at that forecast, because it's been quite warm. >> we have another heat advisory in effect today as we reach the

peak of those temperatures. our inland areas reaching into the upper 90s again for this afternoon, and still pretty hot tomorrow, as the heat advisory doesn't expire until 11:00 p.m. tomorrow evening. then on sunday, the temperatures are feeling a little bit better, but we'll get some real relief early next week, with a cold front coming in that's going to also bring in a slight chance of rain. mostly the north bay will have the highest chance of measuring rain. the rest of the week is drying out and starting to warm up with highs in the low 80s. in san francisco, it's still hot, but it does get much nicer for the rest of the weekend. for the rest of the weekend. we're watching for rain on

guests that's assuring customers they believe it's been contained with the help of law enforcement. for one major vegas resort group, the losses are huge after a september cyber hack on mgm resorts reeked havoc on the chain's dozen properties we're learning the damage and clean-up will cost the casino and hotel chain over $100 million. >> a company of mgm's size should have the proper protocols in place to prevent this type of attack. >> in a statement, the company admitting hackers obtained information from customers who stayed at their resorts before march 2019, including names and contact information, as well as driver's license numbers and a limited number of social security and passport numbers. however, mgm says because of its fast response, customers payment card information and bank accounts were not compromised.

for some users now the first of its kind research studied those side effects on people that weren't diabetic but took the drugs to lose weight. there may be an ugly downside to the new generation of wildly popular weight loss medications, including the diabetes drug ozempic and its sister drug wegovy rare but serious gastro intestinal problems. the american medical association focused on non-diabetic medications known as glp-1s. it found adverse effects according to the study, people who use them had a 9 times higher risk of pancreatitis and a more than three and a half times higher risk of stomach paralysis. the study indicated that most severe symptoms are rare ozempic's study says it can cause side effects the popular drugs have been used

want to keep it in perspective these drugs have been around in treating diabetic patients for years. in fact, many of them are on the labels for these drugs the real issue is what happens when you apply this to a population, who is just trying to use this drug to lose weight. does the risks and benefits, how do you balance those but the absolute risk is small these are rare for example, with the concept of slowing stomach emptying 0.3% with these non-glp-1 drugs to 3% to 0.8 or seven percent with the other drugs. gastroparesis, that's how this drug partially works, which is slowing the emptying of the stomach. the problem is in some people, if it is severe, you will end up with nausea, vomiting, abdominal

pain, feeling full, floating so it is important we're raising awareness. >> yeah. >> but we want to keep it in perspective. >> a lot of people who are obese have issues with their heart, their cholesterol, their joints. all of these things on this side of the table on that side of the table, you have the things that some folks are worried about. how do you balance those two >> this is why people should not be getting this drug off the internet they should be sitting down with a health care provider who can talk to you about the risks and benefits do you have a history of bowl problems you probably shouldn't be taking this drug. and do the benefits outweigh yes, for obesity, we're talking about cardiovascular risks, cancer risks start low. you don't increase until four to six weeks. you monitor for side effects this health care provider should be talking about non-gi risks as well there are other risks with these

drugs, too one important thing i want to bring up is the anesthesiology society released a statement saying patients who take these drugs should stop them a week before any elective procedures i don't think we have talked about this a lot patients even after fasting for 12, 24 hours still have food in their stomach when they're going for surgery. the more we're studying this, we are going to see some of these results. >> you have to have an empty stomach before surgery so you don't suffocate. >> this is your wheel house. you are a cardiologist i imagine you have a lot of folks coming in asking you about these particular drugs how many folks are we talking about? what are you advising your patients to do and not do? >> i would say 40% to 60% of my patients are having these conversations. so many of my patients struggle with obesity and many want to know about other options besides bariatric surgery. they say they have tried everything, and i can't figure out a way to lose weight we know with these medications we are seeing benefits in a high

>> reporter: good morning. really contrasting news from the biden administration, who is stressing they will begin deportation of venezuelan migrants. the more than 200,000 migrants who were in the country prior to that day are still temporarily protected. but here in texas's rio grande valley, we anticipated 20 miles or so of border barrier to go up. and this is a sharp reversal from the biden policy saying not a foot of it would be built. they're using money allocated back in 2019 by a republican congress to build out the county. here's what the president had to say about the matter yesterday. >> i tried to get them to reappropriate, to respect that money.
