thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. meteorologist kari hall joins us this morning, in for cinthia. thank for coming to work on your sixth day in a row. >> yes. it is going to be warm, get out for a walk a run, outdoor activities, get out early. another hot one. waking up to a clear sky in san francisco also still under a heat advisory, starting out mild but will be back to up are 80s and even near 100 degrees for parts of the south county and the bay under heat advisory until 11:00 p.m. as temperatures will ramp up. as we are making plans maybe heading out to some of the fleetweek festivities, mid-70s at 10:00 today. look how warm it will be. find shade, stay hydrated, if going out there to enjoy the air show and blue angels as we head for mid-80s today across the

bay, oakland reaching 90, and 100 in san martin. talk more about that and what's ahead coming up in the full microclimate forecast. kira? >> thanks, kari. see you soon. we have a live look for breaking news out of the middle east will israel has declared war overnight after a surprise attack by the palestinian militant group hamas. this is that live look at the gaza strip. the group launched the unprecedented attack on land, in the sea and from the air from the gaza strip. militant fighters infiltrated israel's southern border earlier this morning firing that barrage of rockets. a number of hamas militants reportedly attacked civilians and taken hostages including israeli soldiers. at last check, nearly 200 people have been killed. that's according to the israeli rescue service. we just learned that moments

ago. hundreds more are injured. palestinian media is reporting six people died in the strip. those numbers are expected to rise. in a video statement this morning, prime minister of israel benjamin netanyahu announcing that the country is indeed at war ordering israeli air strikes against the gaza strip. netanyahu calling for an extensive reserve mobilization telling residents in surrounding areas to stay inside their homes. the white house has said it is aware and engaged on the situation. we will bring you more information throughout this newscast. now to a developing story back here locally in the bay area. a deadly shooting outside a smoke shop in contra costa county. it happened just after 8:00 last night in richmond. police tell us three people were shot. we do know one person was killed. the other two were taken to the hospital. investigators say they're

working to figure out a motive and who's responsible for that shooting. new this morning, a family business in the south bay is picking up the pieces after an attempted burglary. it happened just after 2:30 this morning. a car rammed into the front of uc liquor in union city. you see it there. telling us three young man backed their car in to the storefront trying to steal the atm but couldn't, because it's bolted down. after their failed attempt, they ditched that white sedan and escaped in a different car. sharma tells us he and his parents own the store and this targeted crime has shaken them. >> somebody can walk in, steal something. i can't go home now and can't go to sleep because i have to be here. tomorrow i don't know if i have to be at the store, everyone's going see the damage. affects the business, affects

the community. >> the family has owned the is for for 11 years pleading for help if you have any information. please contact union city police. the search is on for two fans who police say were involved in the brawl in the stand at levi's stadium last month. you may have seen it. when they find those two people they will not be allowed at tomorrow's game. look at these photos if you can. these captured a man and a woman. they were released late last night along with a warning ahead of tomorrow's big game. today in the bay's reporter was at levi's stadium where officials say fan violence will not be tolerated. >> reporter: banned from levi's stadium, the consequences some fans are now facing after a violent brawl amid thousands of football fans including this man and woman who they're trying to identify with your help. the announcement comes at the heels of this weekend's heated

matchup. the 49 ergs and cowboys right here at levi's stadium. a game these are no longer welcome at and along with a third person arrested shortly after the fight last. >> i absolutely agree. fun-loving rivalries. we give each other hard times every year and for somebody to act like that. >> reporter: this is a cowboys fan and his friend a 49ers fan both flew in from texas for the big game. >> one game to come out here and make. >> reporter: looking forward tore a fun and violent-free game. levi's stadium and santa clara police, zero tolerance for violence of any kind and anyone engaging in violence will be ejected from the stadium and face ban from future events.

that wasn't convincing for some local fans. >> for me, honestly, i wouldn't feel safe. the history, rivalry between them. there's going to be fights no matter what, honestly. >> philadelphia eagles a courthouse in the stadium. might be a solution. i don't know. that will be the -- don't take -- someone gets out of hand don't give them a chance. >> reporter: apart from this, the man and woman could face assault charges and hoping the community can help them identify if they're local or from out of town. reporting for "today in the bay." later today in the east bay, a buyout to support a san francisco food vendor attacked by city workers. this video recorded last sunday near pier 41 in san francisco showed that vendor running away from public works employees. it appears, you may have seen there, one of the workers caught

up with the vendor and knocked over his food cart spilling the entire load of food. at that public works department, they tell us the worker was enforcing food permits but did apologize for the worker's actions saying it's investigating what led to that moment. meantime, the organization norcal racing is hosting a community event today in alameda. it's asking people to come to 1499 ferry point to show support for that vendor that starts at 11:00 until he sells out. oakland is extending its window for candidates to apply for the job of police chief. the "chronicle" reports the city administrator says applications will be accepted through next friday. the previous deadline was last friday a week ago. oakland has now been without a chief since the mayor fired the chief in early february. the politician commission is at

a standstill, we're told, due to in-fighting. in lighter news, fleet week is bringing an estimated 1 million people to san francisco this weekend, one of the main highlights, blue angels, of course. lots of ships, docks and piers along the embarcadero. the annual event has wide-ranging impacts and police say come out and enjoy with caution. we have a report. >> big day. very nice. >> reporter: after some time exploring san francisco by way of scooters one of the many military personal kneel here for this week's fleet week. still a big weekend ahead of practices -- and for this week. >> awesome to see people out and about. see the energy. >> reporter: energy of visitors during a warming trend for the bay. >> got a little breeze. picked up in the afternoon.

welcome back. 7:13 on your saturday morning. we have a live look outside for you. in san jose, the city expecting 93 degrees this afternoon. warmer temperatures across the bay today and then a slight cool down heading into tomorrow. meteorologist kari hall will be along in a few minutes. the first so-called largest health care strike in u.s. history ended about an hour ago at 6:00 a.m. but the bargaining is just getting started. about 75,000 kaiser workers across the country took to picket lines wednesday. about half of them here in northern california. the workers union says the issues include low pay and short staffing. they accused kaiser of failing to fill open positions, leaving the rest of them to pick up the slack. kaiser says it has hired thousands of workers to address that issue. talks are expected to resume next thursday with kaiser saying it's looking forward to reaching a new agreement.

with desperation growing as gas prices remain high it appears thieving are siphoning gas, at least in one san jose neighborhood. one victim who didn't want to be identified tells us she returned home last weekend and noticed a hose hanging from her daughter's car. she says the thieves also tried to do the same thing to another family member's car. >> me being the only one working in the house it makes it really tough. i mean, somebody takes our gas, how do i get to work? >> aaa recommends parking your car in a garage or driveway whenever possible and avoid parking in public places for extended periods of time. it that's not possible consider installing a locking gascap. as for gas prices here in california, the current average is $5.87 a gallon. that's actually down from $6.07 one week ago. as always, still much higher than the national average, which

is at $3.75 a gallon. happening today, a celebration for a peninsula restaurant saved from the brink of closure. last month mike's diner in palo alto stayed open after it was expected to close permanently after 30 years in business. the owner tells us he paid rent a day late in july and received an eviction notice from the property owner. instead of accepting that news the community rallied around him. more than 1,400 people signed a petition to keep the restaurant open. at the last minute, in september, the two sides were able to reach agreement to avoid that eviction. this afternoon, mike's is holding a celebration to thank the community. it will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at mike's diner in palo alto. and incredible alerts.

temperature record, lowest i think close but most of us setting a new record. in santa rosa looks like stay about 4 degrees below the record high of 99 degrees. san francisco, still going to reach into upper 80s, low 90s, but the record today is 98 degrees. sometimes in october we do get these big spikes in the heat. and we're seeing that as of now, but not as extreme as it could be with oakland headed for 90 degrees, we may tie that record set back in 1992. let zoom in to the south bay. looking at what we're expecting again today. reaching 96 in east san jose and 97 in cupertino. a lot of sunshine. not much of a wind. lack of wind working a favorite to reduce fire danger and still dangerous to be out there for long periods of time. upper 90s in much of the east bay and upper 80s for san mateo. 86 daly city. san francisco upper 80s.

recalled it wasn't quite a great, warm welcome that he got. i thought, in my retirement, maybe i can try to make someone else's welcome a little bit nicer than my dad's. >> reporter: so a few years ago marlene started volunteering with jewish family services of silicon valley. the group works with the u.s. government to help resettle refugees, many recently from afghanistan and ukraine, finding them jobs, services and most importantly, housing. but what goes in the housing -- >> take a look what we've got. >> reporter: where marlene comes in. forming an online community of hundreds of members called the refugee resettlement village. they collect high quality used furniture, new arrivals can choose from. >> wasn't able to close the doors and feel they can take a deep breath, that they can relax, recuperate. they can tend to their families, and begin to grow new roots.

>> reporter: marlene started by storing stuff in her garage but things have grown to the point she now oversees seven different units of public storage. >> i look like a janitor. >> reporter: over the years, they furnished more than 100 new living spaces. marlene and her team will even rent the u-haul and deliver furniture to them personally. for their latest beneficiary, an afghan couple ending an arduous months' long journey across the world, they come to a place and sit and sleep, it means a lot. >> very grateful. a lot of tents for us. >> i'm lucky to have them. i want to do something that matters and i am surrounded by people who matter and who are doing -- things that will pay off benefits for generations. and that feels really good.

city. everywhere, too hot. >> you know it's going to be hot today again, and it's got pretty hot in san francisco yesterday as well. watching the live stream of the air show, everyone huddled under the trees trying to find some shade. seeing it again today. not as hot but still headed for low 90s in san jose today, and much of the bay area will reach into upper 80s and low 90s as that heat advisory continues. the highs for today reaching up to 90 in oakland and 95 in martinez and in san martin today, 100 degrees. still going to be hot today, but we start to get relief tomorrow. especially along the coast and in san francisco headed for the 70s and still in upper 80s and low 90s for some inland areas. kira? >> kari, thanks. we continue to follow breaking news out of the middle east where israel declared war overnight after a surprise attack by the palestinian

militant group hamas. this is a live look at the gaza strip where the group launched that unprecedented attack on land in the sea and from the air. fighters are infiltrating the country's southern border and firing a massive barrage of rockets. at last check, 198 people have been killed, according to the israeli rescue service. thousands more are injured and those numbers are only expected to grow. nbc's reporter is on the ground in southern israel. >> reporter: israel irs waking up today to find their worst nightmares had come true in the form of a massive surprise attack by palestinian militants in gaza. gunmen dressed in black, masks, in the streets of israeli towns and cities. opening fire and according to hamas, taking israelis hostage and bringing them back inside the gaza strip. i want to explain to you what

we're seeing here. this is normally one of the busiest motorways in southern israel. you can see, it has been shut to civilian traffic by israeli security forces here at this checkpoint, searching every car coming from the south making sure none of those palestinian gunmen have commandeered israeli vehicles because the only thing from an israeli perspective making this situation worse is if the gunmen are able to break out of the gaza strip envelope and bring this situation north to tel aviv or to jerusalem. i just spoke to a senior israeli official who says that this is, what he calls, carried out by land, by sea and by air in the form of palestinian gunmen on paragliders flying from gaza over the border into israel. something israel has never seen

before. all morning we have been hearing the booms of israeli missile defense trying to shoot down some of these 2,000-plus rockets that have been fired from gaza over the course of the day. we have watched this as israeli fighter jets have streaked overhead towards gaza carrying out air strikes there. prime minister benjamin netanyahu says this is now a nation at war, and that this wave of air strikes is just the beginning of what will be massive israeli retaliations. but make no mistake, the state of israel was caught badly off guard this morning. you have to go back 50 years, almost to the day, to october 1973, the yom kippur war when israel was surprised by a combined egyptian-syrian invasion to see the last time that israel was so badly surprised. that was a day that changed israeli history forever, and this is starting to feel like

another one. back to you. >> thank you, reporting from the southern strip. and also new this morning, back here locally, one person is dead after driving off the freeway in the south bay. it happened just before 3:30 this morning on northbound 101 just outside of pallier in san jose. the driver drove off the freeway, crashed down an embankment on coyote road with the car fliping over the guardrail. one person in the car at the time and did die at the scene. chp is investigating what caused that crash. turning now to two people banned from levi's stadium. that's just one of the consequences they will face after a violent brawl at a game last month. the announcement comes ahead of tomorrow's heated matchup, of course, 49ers and long-time rival dallas cowboys facing off at levi's stadium.

and the 25 employees at the sterling axle plant in michigan asked not to report to work. this is in addition to the more than 1,300 workers who have already been laid off over the last few weeks. ford blames the strike for the layoffs, which they say is not a lockout, a spokesman tells us they have no choice but reduce production of auto parts that would go to a plant on strike. a live look at san francisco. a perfect day and once again hearing the mighty roar of the blue angels in a matter of hours. that was the scene yesterday during the team of sixs show run. the blue angels taking to the skies again today and tomorrow afternoon. but the recommended spots all over the city are crissy field and pier 39 in san francisco.

it's a beautiful start to the our morning. we know it's going to be hot once again. this is a look at the view from oakland looking across the bay to san francisco. watching the ships go by, and eventually we'll see those planes in the sky as we continue with our fleet week and a lot of the festivities going on around the city. at 10:00, 74 degrees. starting to warm up but going to be hot going into the middle of the day. make sure you have sunscreen. in the mid-80s at times when the air show begins and a breezy wind. with all the sunshine probably looking for shade. in the south bay, it's going to reach up to 97 in cupertino. los gatos reaching 98 and 99 for morgan hill and gilroy. upper 90s as well for much of the interior. east bay with antioch headed for 98 degrees. 90, oakland. 92 in hayward. warming up near the coastline.

half moon bay, 90 degrees. i don't think we'll see as many 90s as we did yesterday, but still going to be very hot. reaching 90 in mill valley and 95 in santa rosa. looking for things to do today in napa, a barbecue festival that starts at noon, goes throughout the afternoon. going to hit 94 degrees there. be really careful and stay hydrated. might wrap up your weekend watching nbc bay area or going to levi's stadium. starts at 80 degrees but temperatures drop off nicely going throughout the game. then looking ahead to next week, eventually see rain coming back late monday into tuesday. looks like we get a round of at least light rain coming in, and may be a couple more systems back behind that. next weekend is looking dry up to saturday and watching saturday closely, because i know we have our solar eclipse, and we want a clear view but may be clouds in the way. the first round of rain, most won't measure a lot out of that.

war. he ordered israeli air strikes against the gaza strip. netanyahu calling for an extensive reserve mobilization telling residents to stay inside their homes. the white house saying it is aware and engaged in the situation. it is condemning the appalling attack by hamas terrorists. we will have a special nbc news report with more in just three minutes at 8:00 a.m. back here locally, new this morning a family in the east bay rattled after an attempted burglary at their store. it happened just after 2:30 this morning. a car rammed into the front of uc liquor in union city. see it there. the employees telling us three young man backed their car into the storefront and tried to steal the atm but couldn't because it was bolted down. after their famed attempt the men ditched that sedan and escaped in a different car. the family owned the store 11 years and are pleading for help if you have any information.
