palestinian militant group hamas launched a surprise attack. is like taking a live look at gaza where it is calm right now. at least 400 people are dead between israel and the gaza strip. the number is expected to rise. >> rob sanchez is in israel with the latest. >> reporter: it looks like a scene from israel's darkest nightmare. a surprise attack beginning with thousands of rockets followed by waves of heavily armed palestinian gunmen pouring out of gaza. onto the streets of cities and towns across southern israel. the militants taking whole families hostage. marching them barefoot through their own neighborhoods and then cries of triumph as the spirit their captives back to gaza. israel military tonight confirming there are both civilians and soldiers among the captives. their exact number is unknown. the army says that all options are on the table including a

and even in monterey. nbc bay area ian cull set out to find them and figure out what they really are.>> it is just falling from the sky. >> reporter: if you have seen white, sticky clumps of webbing floating on the street, you are not alone. we have received dozens of reports of the mysterious webs falling from the sky.>> we thought it was some kind of halloween stuff. it was just floating around. truck it ends up they are exactly what they appear to be. spiderwebs and they are part of a process called spider ballooning. right after many baby spiders are born, they release tiny strands of silk that act as parachutes, letting them catch the breeze and float away to find their own homes.>> spiders, after they hatch, they disperse. a lot of animals disperse. to get away from where they were originally born because when you had with hundreds or thousands of siblings, there is a lot of competition for food.

beautiful sunshine with the temperatures in the mid-70s. this one is going to be drying -- drawing a lot of attention to the screen on nbc bay area. we have kickoff at 5:20 -- 5:20. the kickoff for the cowardly 49ers. the temperatures are in the low 80s in santa clara. we will watch the wind gusts at the afternoon goes on people make the exit out of the ballpark. or out of the stadium. excuse me. make sure you bring your sunglasses and a light layer going into the later hours. i also want you to start finding your umbrellas if you live in the north bay. we are starting to see, in the long-range outlook, some rain chances returning for early into monday and tuesday. i don't think it will be in the way of the morning commute. the showers will start to move onshore. mainly keeping the chances for sonoma county, napa county, and marin county. very trace amounts as we see them mostly racking up in the north bay. everyone else should start to see the totals at about a 10th of an inch of rain or less.
