sources familiar with a briefing that was given to u.s. lawmakers last night there should be at least four americans among the victims. the emergency continues inside israeli territories, the israeli forces said at least 1,000 palestinian militants managed to cross the border from gaza into israel throughout the weekend, they still have the capability of crossing that border and they're still fighting, the israeli forces are fighting militants inside israeli territories. in the meantime israel has retaliated against the surprise attacks by continuing to bomb and pound gaza with air strikes, with helicopters and jet fighters they said that overnight they hit 500 targets including command centers from hamas and islamic jihad, a palestinian paramilitary group inside of gaza because of that enclave is so densely populated then of course civilians are expected to pay the price, a high price for those air strikes according to the palestinian health ministry which just issued a new and

updated statement in the last few minutes. almost 500 palestinians including tens of children have died because of the air strikes and more than 2,700 were injured, but this looks like the beginning of a very long and deadly war between israel and hamas, perhaps the longest so far. >> a horrible reality of this war that's just getting started. thank you. so much fear around the world and here at home about what could come next, and with that let's get an update from washington, d.c. on how the united states is responding to all of this. nbc's alice barr joins us live from washington. alice, of course the u.s. is a close ally of israel, so what kind of action are we seeing from our military? >> reporter: we're talking about one of this country's closest allies, the u.s. has always supported israel, calling it the lone democracy in that region. president biden has been in close contact with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. nbc news has learned that the u.s. military is moving some ships and aircraft closer to

beyond the region are hamas, hezbollah and iran so it's entirely possible that one of the motivations for this attack was to try to derail these efforts to advance normalization. >> reporter: blinken also said the u.s. was working to confirm the reporting about americans who have been killed and he said it is possible u.s. citizens are among those kidnapped by hamas officials tell nbc news the u.s. is working through possible plans for helping americans evacuate israel and the official said while nothing has been determined or ordered, one possibility is to get american citizens on to navy ships to get them to safety jessica. >> there's so much terror. alice, thank you. now some historic perspective. the gaza strip is a small part of the palestinian territories and separate from the occupied west bank in jerusalem it's currently ruled by hamas an extremist sunni group voted into power in 2006. but internal palestinian power

struggles led hamas to forcefully expel the more moderate palestinian authority a year later since then a harsh international blockade has rendered it one of the poorest places in the world. israel pulled forces and settlers out of gaza 20 years ago but along with egypt they still control land crossings, sea ports and air space, effectively sealing the area off. gaza and israel have fought several wars since that disengagement, but the attack this weekend is by far the most murderous ever inflicted on israeli civilians and the israeli response is likely to be one of gaza's most severe punishments. back at home now rallies popped up across the u.s. both in support of israel and in support of the palestinian cause. this comes as security was ramped up at synagogues and mosques nationwide nbc's kathy park has the latest from new york. >> reporter: the crossroads of the world becoming a deep dividing point with palestinian
