rain on approach, crossing the coast into mendocino county, the next hour or so, dropping into northwestern sonoma county. most rain chances should be in the north bay, right about through lunchtime, and then by the afternoon what's left of the showers starts to drop south. by midafternoon, across the santa cruz mountains. cool day today, highs only in the mid-60s, san francisco about 71 around san jose. we are showing a standard backup for a day where not everyone is working. it's a bank holiday. we're looking at the smooth drive in the middle lanes, the last of the backups. they sped up the metering lights going onto the bay bridge. there was an earlier disabled vehicle that has been cleared from treasure island. we do have some slowing down through richmond, but not a major issue. we should be seeing a smooth flow continue for a while. highway 37 with a light build. highway 4 consolidating to basically the border between bay

point and concord. the rest of the bay, a nice, easy drive. a mild build and still slow until north flynn, and then everything clears up around dublin and pleasanton. back to you. breaking at this hour, israel continues its all-out air assault in gaza. this is video from earlier showing explosions lighting up the night sky. israeli forces, meanwhile, have yet to stabilize the situation in israel after the large-scale hamas terror strike over the weekend. we want to give you a live look in gaza city where right now, it's midafternoon, israeli military says more than 1,000 targets have been hit in gaza since sunday's declaration of war. the number of dead continues to climb. a short time ago, it grew to at least 1,200 confirmed deaths combined, at least 700 of those are israeli. >> we have new drone video showing the aftermath of that

compounded with news that at least four americans have been killed. the senate's top democrats saying that toll will rise, after lawmakers were briefed on the latest developments. americans who managed to make it out of israel describing scenes of horror. >> there were rockets above us all day. >> reporter: israeli officials say at least 700 people have been killed in what they're describing as their nation's 9/11. israeli air strikes now hammering the gaza strip, after the ruling hamas militant group in gaza attacked israel on multiple fronts saturday morning, raining rockets into israel, while hamas fighters infiltrated, in some cases by paraglider. a music festival in the israeli desert one of their first targets, 260 people were killed here. many more were taken hostage. the defense department announcing the u.s. is sending military assets closer to israel

to deter any further attacks, while u.s. officials are not ruling out using the assets to help one of america's closest allies in its fight against hamas. there are growing questions about iran's potential role in this attack. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken said he had not yet seen evidence that iran directed the violence, but that hamas and iran do have a long history, a long relationship together. marcus and laura. >> such a tragedy. we will continue to follow this story. thank you, alice. the raging conflict overseas is bringing out impassioned protesters on both sides right here in the bay area. israeli supporters gathered in the south bay yesterday. you see them praying for safety and security. in san francisco, palestinian supporters protested israel's occupation of gaza and the continued financial support of israel from the u.s.

"today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab will have a live report on this side of the story ahead in our next half hour. many families are still frantically searching for missing loved ones in israel, and that includes one man trying to find his wife and two daughters, who were abducted while visiting family. he says his video shows what appears to be his wife and kids and his mother-in-law on a truck actually headed to gaza. >> less than 5 years old, and my little baby girl, less than 3 years old. they are just little babies. they are not even girls. it's babies. to everyone who is willing to hear, it doesn't matter if it's the person holding them or the international community. >> you can watch the full story this morning on the "today" show, which will include reporters in tel aviv covering the latest developments at 7:00 right after "today in the bay."

6:07 right now. kizer's negotiations are set to resume later this week, with the union that organized last week's three-day strike. some 75,000 health workers across the country walked off the job, many here in northern california. kizer says talks never halted during the work stoppage. turning to decision 2023, this is an off year election, but early voting will open later this morning for a special election in santa clara county. voters there will be weighing a board election for san jose evergreen community college, and los gatos voters will vote on a special tax measure. you can vote at the registrar's office in san jose, with early voting open at 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. until november 6th. drop boxes are also available. did you catch the game last night right here on nbc bay area? a stunning statement from the 49ers. they're certainly looking like

profits this week. it has a snack division, frito-lay. it's going to be interesting if pepsi talks about ozempic, because more ozempic, fewer cheetos. more satellites released this weekend, two satellites, trying to catch up with starlink, which has thousands of internet satellites in orbit. this is another launch from starlink over the weekend. these happen so routinely, we rarely report on them that much. wall street thinking about israel, but also that blockbuster jobs report friday. the labor department absolutely floored economists, reporting more than double the new jobs expected. 336,000. economists looking for 170,000. if you poll americans, a vast majority will tell you the economy is weakening. if you look at the economic numbers, that's just not the case. employment is up, inflation is

down. a lot of warnings this morning about misinformation online, particularly on the site we used to call twitter. experts warning so-called verified accounts are spreading absolutely wrong, sometimes fake news about the situation in the middle east. over the weekend, elon musk went on twitter to suggest two accounts to follow for more information about the war, and one of them has a history of posting anti-semitic content. meeting here with musk and is raily prime minister netanyahu last month. netanyahu asked musk to roll back anti-semitism in twitter. musk has since posted to x asking users to please stick as close to the truth as possible, which i would say just tell the truth. but close to the truth is maybe the best you can hope. >> interesting. >> thanks, scott. so self-checkout maybe in some cases may be easier, but

there are signs some retail chains may be ready to reconsider. new research shows self-checkouts are causing stores more problems, increased theft and technical issues. costco is already making changes to self-checkout, asking employees to check membership cards in those lines to halt disallowed card sharing. walmarts in new mexico are getting rid of self-checkout altogether. most shoppers agree self-checkout versus human checkout depends on the situation. >> if you couldn't use them anymore? >> i would just find it annoying if the lines were too long. >> so you only care about efficiency? >> i only care about speed. >> that data compiled by the national retail federation indicates a majority of money lost comes from self-checkout and employee theft. this next story is not exactly what i thought it would be when i first saw it. trending, it's october, but in

upper 50s there, too. there's a live look at dublin and pleasanton. 57 degrees. san jose, also some cloudy skies to start, 60. the radar and satellite, we've got clouds over the bay area, but the rain producing showers, we're talking more than just drizzle coming down now around the mendocino county coast. that is the line we'll be watching moving south as we approach lunchtime. notice, morning through midday, areas south of san francisco not really seeing a whole lot. most of the showers up in the north bay, then by the afternoon and towards the evening commute, highway 17 or along the coast, you'll see light rain at times, and some cool temperatures. and notice the progression of the rain. who has the most? it's the coastline here, marin county, northwestern sonoma county. not much at all, we expect, around san jose or the tri-valley. 71 degrees in san jose, we should see mid-60s san francisco, upper 60s and low 70s inland around the tri-valley.

one more chance for showers showing up right around tomorrow afternoon, then some clearing skies, the warmest days of the week will be wednesday and thursday. then eyes on the skies for the weekend. you're going to hear a lot about this this week, the annual solar eclipse peaking at 9:00 a.m. on saturday. here is the issue. we could see clouds around the bay area. right now tracking clearer skies just to the south. as we move forward, out of shower chances by tuesday. we'll see a few more 80s for the second half of the week, watching clouds heading into the weekend. another check of the bay bridge commute with mike. >> no 80s near. things are moving pretty smoothly. we're at speed for the most part, mild backup, despite the metering lights being activated about 5:40. the earlier incident cleared, good recovery. a smoother build, nothing dramatic. it's lighter than we normally expect at 6:21. a build here richmond toward san rafael, across west 580.

>> i'm marcus washington. it's a busy morning here. we want to get you started with a live look this morning at half moon bay. this is where the annual pumpkin weigh-off will be. our bob redell, who is there right now live is going to have more on them celebrating 50 years of those massive pumpkins. >> they have certainly grown. our forecast is changing as well. rob mayeda is in for kari this morning. could the rain get in the way for the weigh-off? >> may have some drizzle for the morning. later today we'll see the chances of rain dropping out of the north bay and moving south as we head toward the afternoon. big impact on temperatures today. we're only talking highs in the 60s and 70s as we switch to the satellite radar view. you can see the rain around mendocino county now, just starting to enter northwestern sonoma county. as we track this hour-by-hour, notice how most of the chances for seeing more than just drizzle is going to be north of san francisco through about lunchtime, and then in the afternoon and evening a few spotty showers pushing south. so half moon bay today, speaking of that, only 62 today.

now, the identities of those victims have not yet been made public. the u.s. military already responding as well, with ships and aircraft now moving closer to israel, as a show of support. military sources telling nbc its assist will not likely be fully in place for several days. right now plans are on the table to possibly assist in the evacuation of americans from israel if needed. sentiment over the war in the middle east already front and center right here in the bay area. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. i know over the weekend both sides gathering. >> reporter: that is correct, marcus and laura. in different ways, though. there was a pro-palestinian protest at the israeli consulate yesterday in san francisco, there was also a vigil at a south bay synagogue, also taking place last night. now, at both, people who support

israel or those who support the pro-palestinian plight, they both were sharing that they share concern and worry over their loved ones who are caught in the middle of this violence. pro-palestinian demonstrators marched through the financial district yesterday in protest. they made it to the israeli consulate, over what they call israel's settlement in the west bank and occupation of the gaza strip. protesters say the recent attacks by hamas are retaliation for conditions in gaza, and increased military assaults on palestinians. now, those protesters were met by a smaller group of israel supporters who denounced the attacks by the terrorist group hamas. there were heightened exchanges between the two sides. at one point water bottles and eggs were reportedly thrown, but sfpd kept the two sides separated and we've not learned

of injuries from the altercations there. this man, gaza native, says he has many friends and family members in gaza. at this point he does not know how they are doing after israel's counterattacks. the same fear echoed in the south bay at this vigil, as more than 100 people tried to find comfort through song and prayer. dozens attended a vigil there to show support for the people of israel. the deputy council general of israel to the pacific northwest con determined the hamas attacks, saying the terrorists have been brutal towards families, the elderly and infants. he, too, has been overcome with worry. he says his father and other relatives in israel are now in hiding, and he is scared what will happen if they are found by terrorists. >> many of them have been in safe rooms for many long hours. we are communicating with them.

determine if one of two defendants in a deadly peninsula street racing crash should be tried as an adult. this happened nearly one year ago in brentwood city when investigators say two cars were driving at high speeds down el camino real, and cameras show the car driven by an unidentified juvenile plowing into another car, killing a mother and father. their 7-year-old twin daughters sitting in the back seat survived. the juvenile defendant is in court today for a transfer hearing. now, the other defendant, a 24-year-old, kyle harrison, has already entered a not guilty plea. new this morning, pharmacy workers at some walgreens stores are vowing to walk out this week. an organizer tells cnn pharmacists and other staffers are upset over poor working conditions and the struggle to keep up with increasing responsibilities. the company did issue a statement saying it acknowledges worker concerns, but it's still not clear which walgreens locations will be affected by the walkout. it's also possible the impact at

as you head outside, in san francisco we've got drizzle ongoing and you're starting to see a little of that across the golden gate bridge. a little misty skies there around the golden gate bridge. you can see it from the headlights. here is a look at more drizzle in today's forecast, odds looking good for that north of san francisco through lunchtime, and then a few showers south, not as much as the north bay is going to see around the peninsula and south bay toward the evening. highs 60s from san francisco to oakland, 71 in san jose, and a mild looking forecast, after the shower chances clear out after tomorrow evening, we should see numbers climbing closer to 80 degrees approaching thursday. for a check of the morning commute, here is mike. >> we're going to compare toll plazas. we have the bay bridge toll plaza. i like this one better right now. look how light the traffic is. even though the metering lights are on.

front of microphones to say they support israel and will help in any way, but congress cannot take action. there is no speaker of the house. congress cannot do anything until it has one. that stoked more anger at matt gaetz, the florida congressman who initiated the dismissal of kevin mccarthy from the speaker's chair. there is a world crisis, crises, and the american legislative branch is in disarray. texas republican mike mccall, head of the foreign affairs committee in the house, asking, what kind of message are we sending our adversaries, when we cannot govern, when we're dysfunctional, when doe don't even have a speaker of the house? the other thing to match, those who say we must watch israel, our democratic ally, fighting invasion, but who don't support ukraine, our democratic ally, fighting invasion? now, that became an issue over the weekend on the campaign trail as former vice president mike pence pointed out, many

running for nomination are doing just that. >> ron desantis saying that it was a territorial dispute was wrong. when vivek ramaswamy said we had no national interest in ukraine, he questioned whether they would use american military force to defend israel just a few short weeks ago. now we wake up and iran's agents are gauging an unprecedented attack on israel. and of course donald trump saying that our support in ukraine is unsustainable, the criticisms he's levelled at prime minister netanyahu. to me, it all serves to embolden the enemies of israel, the enemies of freedom. >> there is talk on capitol hill of writing a giant funding bill for ukraine to the tune of $100 billion, enough to fund ukrainians for the next year and, frankly, shock the

an annual fall tradition, that competition for the world's heaviest pumpkin. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live in half moon bay for this year's great pumpkin weigh-off. you've been going for almost a quarter of a century out there. this event is a big milestone. >> reporter: it is. i've been coming here on and off since 2000, not every year, but a number of years. this is the 50th annual half moon bay pumpkin weigh-off. the current world record is 2,703 pound, the north american record was set by this man, from minnesota, who set the record last year with his win at half moon bay. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> this is your entry for this year? >> yes. >> 2,560 last year. what's this taping at? >> this one tapes around 2,400. but when they get to be this size, they can go quite a bit heavy or small.

right around lunchtime today. you can see through about noon, best chances for finding a few scattered showers in the north bay. into the afternoon and evening, a little less green in the futurecast, approaching 7:00 around the peninsula, and the east bay hills, a chance of seeing a few light rain showers. the expected rain total, best chances for accumulating rainfall, the hills near mount tam and toward northwestern sonoma county for the afternoon. with the cloud cover, highs only in the 60s from the north bay to san francisco and oakland, low 70s around san jose. near 70 around the tri-valley. one more chance for seeing a few more showers arriving tomorrow. another one of those relatively weaker weather systems by midday tuesday. then clearing skies, leading us to a bit of a warm-up for the forecast wednesday and thursday. beyond that, all eyes on the sky. as we head toward the weekend, we have the annual solar eclipse, peak of it during the
