guthrie and hoda kotb. from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning. welcome to "today." glad you are joining us on this tuesday morning. >> yeah, it's a busy one. we want to get to our breaking news. israel ordering a full siege of the gaza. launching air strikes at targets across the region and gathering 300,000 troops ahead of a possible ground invasion. >> this all comes amid a new warning from hamas, now threatening to start executing hostages in response to israel's bombing campaign. and u.s. officials say it is likely that some americans are among those kidnapped. >> 11 americans are now confirmed among the dead after this weekend's attacks. the white house bathed in colors of the israeli flag overnight. the president set to speak about the attacks later this afternoon. we will start with richard engel on the ground inside israel. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning.

we are now on day four of this war, and israel's main priority right now, before any potential ground assault of gaza, is securing israeli territory. we are now in a kibbutz right next to the border of gaza. in fact, the hamas militants breached this kibbutz's fence right behind me here where those soldiers are and went through this community going house to house, killing people, kidnapping people. we have seen so many of those golf carts where hostages were brought back into the gaza strip, a lot of those golf carts were taken from here and other communities like it. israelis believe that there are still dozens of bodies. and we have seen israeli soldiers going through this area with bodies, going house to house, searching for victims. there are also many hamas bodies in this area. so for now, according to israeli media, about 900 israelis have been killed. but that number is expect to go up as they continue to search

and secure this area and other communities just like it. >> reporter: israel is changing the skyline of the gaza strip. flattening it. medical officials in gaza say more than 700 palestinians have been killed. israel has also cutoff gaza completely. no power, food and water allowed in. it's a total siege. the israeli government says the goal is to crush hamas and drive the militant group from power. israel has told gazaen to seek shelter and protect themselves. but where can they go? in a region sealed off. and this war now in its fourth day could get more intense. this morning israeli military vehicles are lined up outside of gaza, ready for a potential ground assault. on saturday, hamas launched an unprecedented attack, sending more than a thousand fighters into israel. hamas says it prepared for this

for over a year and this morning released a video which the group ended and blurred showing its fighters, practicing, blowing up security fences around the strip. its fighters practicing blowing up the security fences around the security strip and breaking into israel. israelis have been collecting dash camera and cctv footage to understand how hamas fighters attacked. laying in wait for a car to open the gate, shooting the driver and then slipping in. more than 100 bodies of israelis were later discovered there. another video shows what it was like to try to escape. the car racing away is shot at in the windshield. the driver still manages to keep moving until more shots come in and the vehicle loses control and crashes. u.s. officials say americans are among the dead and missing, possibly taken hostage. hamas is now threatening to kill hostages and film the executions unless israel stops attacks on civilians in gaza. >> also horrific, richard. okay. with the fighting picking up,

are we seeing indications that a broader war may be breaking out soon? >> reporter: it is possible. so far we have seen some attacks from lebanon. but they have been relatively small in scale. so there is that potential. but at this stage, it does seem to be contained. if there is a ground assault and if there are more casualties then, yes, the risk of a regional war goes up significantly. >> all right. richard engel for us there inside israel. richard, thank you. as the fighting intensifies the middle east, rallies and demonstrations are being held across the u.s. and there were some tense moments at one vigil held on a college campus overnight. nbc's emilie ikeda is in times square this morning with more. good morning. >> reporter: hey there, savannah. dramatic scenes playing out overnight at the university of florida where there was a vigil. people honoring the lives lost

in hamas' attacks on israel. it started out as a somber and emotional evening when chaos and panic began to ensue. according to university police, when someone had fainted and people were calling 911, that was a misunderstanding, according to police, sending the crowd running, fleeing. you can see the stampede and the chaotic moments playing out. there were roughly 20 people injured in the stampede according to an area hospital, all minor injuries. police underscoring that the incident was an accident. but it does speak to just how many jewish americans are on edge in light of the violence. in fact, just yesterday, i was interviewing someone wearing a yam ka, addressing the ripple effects when the man came up and yelled a expletive israel in his face. we know that police are ramping up patrols at houses of worship, at synagogues across the country. we have seen an increased police presence at rallies, at times competing rallies here in new york, chicago, los angeles, pro-israel rallies,

pro-palestinian rallies as they continue to play out. and emotions, understandably, running high. so many people here in the u.s. with loved ones, people they know over in the war torn region. and now some people are having to bid farewell to loved ones going to fight in israel, including celine, my mom, who just gave an emotional farewell to her younger brother at l.a.x., who is going to fight. she says that she is proud of him but understandably fearful for his safety. all of this, guys, underscoring just the far-reaching impact of the violence we continue to see playing out. savannah and hoda? >> emilee, thank you. turning back to the hostage situation playing out after those attacks in israel and the families now left agonizing over the safety of their loved ones. nbc's raf sanchez has that part of the story. hey, raf, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. we are just two miles from the gaza border here and many of the israeli hostages were kidnapped from this.

in some cases dragged out of their homes at gunpoint. but all across this small country, there are families this morning who are waiting for news and praying for their loved one's safety. this morning families waiting in agony, their loved ones under a new threat. that warning from hamas that it may execute civilian hostages in response to israeli strikes. up to 150 people being held captive as new details emerged of the deadly raids by hamas and israeli vil tajs villages, towns and this music festival. yesterday savannah spoke to yoni. >> if you could speak to those who were holding them, what would you say? what would your message be? >> the message is these are babies. babies, women, families are off limits. show some decency. show some respect.

help as she's carried into gaza. her boyfriend, hands tied behind his back, helpless to save her. she has what so many israeli families are praying for, a video shows noah inside gaza alive and apparently uninjured. now every indication is that israel is massing its forces for a ground invasion of gaza. that would be complicated enough at the best of times. but adding to the complexity is how do you mount that offensive without harming the hostages? hoda. >> raf sanchez for us. raf, thank you. president biden is set to address the nation and the world over this situation later today. peter alexander joins us now. peter, good morning. what kind of statement is the president expected to make? >> reporter: yeah, savannah, first i should say president biden is expected to speak with benjamin netanyahu today. the president's remarks will be the first time that we hear from him on camera since we learned

at least 11 americans are among those killed overnight here at the white house, it was the blue and white, the colors of the israeli flag. the president called the enormity of the loss yesterday unfathomable and he will make sure israel has what its need to defend itself. the first batch of military aid we are told as well as a carrier strike group and f-35 fighter jets as a show of support. and acknowledging that americans are likely among those held hostage. the president ordered hostage recovery experts to israel as you can see in this photo, we'll show it to you released by the white house, the president huddled with his national security team yesterday and said a powerful statement with european allies said the terrorist actions of hamas must be universally condemned >> so we'll see the president for the first time this afternoon. meanwhile, it turns out he was being interviewed by the special council in that classified documents investigation into him. what more do you know about that >> reporter: that's right. the president's interview at the

specifically as it relates to rfk jr., there is that kennedy, democratic dynasty factor plays a part here. seems for democrats perhaps the bigger concern could be something like a no labels cand candidacy, a moderate gets into the race president biden just recently said, in fact that could help the other guy. he issued that warning for rfk jr those numbers we showed, hypothetically, very close race. if you're going to have president biden and former president trump the two front-runners go up against each other. remember that rfk jr. is polling better among republicans that's why you're seeing more of a full throated response and criticism to this shift from rfk jr. from the gop specifically, savannah. >> those moments in politics that could be consequential in the end. hallie, thank you very much. appreciate it. all right, guys. time to cut to the chase sorry to say, you didn't win the power ball jackpot last night, but guess what, nobody else did either that means the jackpot is on the rise once again. now stands at a staggering $1.73 billion. >> geez.

an impact on your morning commute, especially if it goes through the east bay. >> this is a live look at interstate 580 right where the richmond-san rafael bridge toll plaza is. westbound lanes are closed --or have been this morning after a deadly big rig crash. they've been cleaning up and it looks like things are getting better. we have video from when the crash happened at about 10:00 last night. the truck on fire at the toll plaza, it happened after the truck rammed into the toll plaza. sadly, the truck driver died. the repairs will have to be green lighted by caltrans before all lanes can completely reopen. mike inouye has been keeping his eye on everything going on out there. the closure, boy, this happened late last night. >> it happened at 10:00 p.m. last night, so nine and a half hours. the cleanup continuing. they have to clear up this absorbent, which was spread out because there was a spill. it happened right here between these right most lanes. i don't think they're going to open those two lanes any time

soon. once they clear most of the equipment, they may reopen one more lane. right now four are open, getting you toward the north bay out of richmond. the slowdown here and the build out of richmond, west 80, continues to have an impact out of contra costa county. highway 24 recovers after a series of earlier crashes, but causes a ripple back toward the walnut creek interchange. the closure for the san mateo bridge that was going on at the toll plaza, the crash was cleared the left two lanes. the majority of the lanes are clear, and at the span. on the span, everything moves smoothly. that was enough to cause a big backup for 880. backup for 880. san mao bridge is once againte thursday night football on prime.

and the area behind me where they're actually giving blood. they have treated a number of people injured in the attacks. this is the largest hospital in israel, tel-aviv hospital. and many of the people here expect that things will get worse before they get better the hospital has met its needs, immediate needs right now for blood. there is fear this could get worse and could be prolonged. >> and, lester, i know you have been talking to people who are victims, who have suffered what have they told you? >> reporter: i have heard incredible stories of heroism as well as loss i spoke to an american mother who has seven members of her family who are missing right now. one of them a little boy was actually video taped as he was being dragged away so they believe he is in gaza. but the rest of the family is unaccounted for. we are hearing stories like this from many, many people who are just trying to account for their loved ones we have all seen horrible pictures of people being abducted, carried across the

border it is horrifying to watch and certainly the worst fear for many people here. >> yeah, absolutely. lester, thank you. of course, we will be watching you tonight on nbc "nightly news." back here turning now to the latest in a growing string of work stoppages nationwide. pharmacy staff at some walgreens stores walking off the job over what they call increasingly unsafe work conditions and that comes just weeks after similar protests by workers at cvs. nbc's stephanie gosk joins with us the latest on this. j steph, good morning >> good morning. the walgreens walk-out started yesterday. hundreds of pharmacy staff members participated across the country with more expected today and tomorrow it comes just as cold and flu season is arriving and many customers coming into stores for vaccines, part of an influx, pharmacists say that has pushed them to a breaking point >> reporter: at multiple pharmacies nationwide, pharmacists walking off the job.

not for higher pay, they say, but for health and safety reasons. >> we're so busy running ourselves ragged for the marathon and seeing customer's safety be at risk as well as our own >> reporter: tammy who asked us not to use his full name, works as a pharmacist in minnesota she says she joined at least 10 of her colleagues who did not report for work on monday. >> it is scary and we're getting to the point where it looks like i don't know how much farther we can push ourselves. >> in addition to filling and verifying prescriptions, tammy and other walgreen's employees sa pharmacists are also managing a high volume of calls, working with insurance companies and administering a growing number of vaccines. in addition, walgreen's acknowledges the last few years has required an unprecedented effort by our team members and that it has been a very challenging time the second largest retail pharmacy also says it is engaged and listening to the concerns

raised by some of its team members and is committed to ensuring that the entire pharmacy team has the support and resources necessary. last month cvs pharmacy customers in kansas city were impacted when workers there walked off the job to protest over similar staffing concerns. >> they understand the risks that are being posed to the community that with these demands on them. so they don't want to make a mistake. >> reporter: according to usa today, cvs corporate staff flew to kansas city to meet with organizers >> i don't think a lot of customers understand that we are trying to do our best for them. >> reporter: walgreens organizers say they don't want to disrupt patient care but need to take a stand, a sentiment some customers can appreciate. >> i support workers' rights a little inconvenience for me is worth it. >> walgreen's said in a statement only a small number of pharmacies are experiencing disruptions and nearly all of their 9,000 locations continue

now ready to share with the world. her parent's love story, front and center >> he found her endlessly fascinating. >> it stuck around. >> until the very end. file like my dad on a desert island my dad just wanted my mom there. >> how beautiful is their love story? okay, melissa lives in her childhood home, which her therapist says was not a great idea she said her parents were really complicated. they had these big careers and that was complicated her mom is still alive she lives across the creek from the same property. she has dementia, but she goes to visit her every day it is interesting to think about their love story as this hollywood love story but also as ordinary parents. >> this is what you fantasize their love story would be like and it's actually true, yeah. >> but she also was very honest, there were complicated moments she was so candid. >> what an interesting interview. the book looks beautiful.

with the kids when they were little we do reading time before bed. let's write a poem i kept them. i had a lot of them over the years. and then the pandemic hit. aaron has been a student at pratt, an art student. and she's gotten better and better at art. i said, i'll rewrite one or two a week you do the drawings and see what we get >> erin, do you have a strong memory of when you were little and these poems just kind of started tumbling out >> i was so little i was like 4 or 5. but i do remember sitting in my brother's bedroom, my dad would sit in this purple velvet rocking chair and lights be low and we would volley back and forth like a little writer's room but with a 4-year-old and 6-year-old and a dad it was very fun. >> that is the cutest. we talked how this means a lot to you. >> yeah. >> will you describe again what that is. you get to do it with your daughter. >> well, i'll tell you, we all take pictures and make videos of us and our kids.

but nothing takes me back to sitting in that chair with two kids reading books or talking to them like looking at these old poems that we did together so i would just -- the book encourages kids to write and to have fun with words. but i think -- i hope it also encourages parents and grandparents to grab a piece of paper and write a poem with your kids because 15 years from now, you'll read that you'll see what the kid wrote because the kids wrote a lot of the lines. and you will just go right back in time to sitting with them >> i know you -- you were on with me, i don't know, maybe it was two years ago right after your health scare. i remember that i felt like your whole life snapped into focus. >> yeah. >> if it was out of focus a little, it snapped in. >> yeah. >> have those lessons endured? >> yeah. it's so funny you just showed paul newman because paul newman did an interview once and they asked him if you knew what you know now when you were younger, what would you do different?

and he said, i would work less and i remember thinking, but you did great stuff. >> yeah. why would you do that? but now i think i know after the heart attack you need a little space in your life to take in the people around you and the experiences you're having just to have memories and to really value what you're going through. so, i'm trying to put that in my life and i have been working at that and i think doing a good job >> erin, what's it like having this guy as your dad >> it's lots of things he's very silly. he's very serious. he works a lot but he also kind of makes fun of the world a lot. and that was so fun growing up we have a great poem in here about our doctor that's based on a real impression you would do of our childhood doctor and we had a lot of comedians and comedy around the house. >> the doctor had a very -- i would do the zr saying this child needs more hot fudge in their system he kind of ran his words together and talked real slow.

and so, yeah, i was always doing voices and characters. >> what was the best advice your dad gave you >> more than a piece of advice, i have a strong memory of being 18 and having just moved to new york and getting dinner with him. and suddenly being very emotional about having this piece of home after being away from home for so long. and kind of feeling confused and lost, as you do at that age. and he just kind of looked at me and was like, you know, i get it i've been there. i was literally in new york when i was that age and i felt that way, too and he was in new york but he was writing for "snl". >> he gave you great advice. this is a great book i'm going to end with this wait good morning. i'm marcus washington. breaking right now, a live look at westbound traffic on i-580 at

what's the importance of physical health as it pertains to mental health. >> the run this morning was great. we had a nice outcome. i find running really important for my mental health it's my form of meditation it's my alone time it's my way to decompress from the day and just the city and the noise around me. without it, i don't know, i think i might be a little unstable i don't know i just have to get out there and run. i have to move. >> i think people can relate to that phil, 65 million americans have a mental health condition. unfortunately 60% of that population not doing anything about it what is our mission at project healthy minds? how are you going to impact that today? >> yeah. thanks, carson look, we're trying to help 10 million americans over the next ten years find mental health services because i think at the end of the day it should be as easy to find mental health services in america as it is to book a flight, a hotel or restaurant reservation that's what we're all act. >> what are some of the things happening today? soul cycle ride. >> we have the soul cycle side this morning raising money for mental health.
