right now, new waves of rockets throughout the day, israel's iron dome intercepted rockets. israeli forces have been bombarding the gaza strip. today's the fourth day of fighting since hamas' surprise attack on saturday morning. more than 1,000 israelis and hundreds of palestinians have been killed. >> president biden spoke about the war from the white house today, the president saying 14 americans have been killed, that's a new number, and that other americans are being held hostage by hamas. he called the militant group's attack, quote, sheer evil. >> no regard to who pays the life. the loss of innocent life is heartbreaking. like every nation in the world, israel has the right to respond. >> we're also learning about a

horrific scene at a collective community known as kibbutz. three miles from the gaza border. israeli forces say they have found the bodies of civilians and children inside homes, one general said, quote, it's not a battlefield it's massacre. our coverage begins on the ground in israel. nbc correspondent ellison barber joins us now from tel aviv. we're feting word out of the biden administration that secretary of state blinken does plan to be in israel in the region soon, don't have a precise timing on that, but talk about that relationship and what the president said in his speech a short time ago. >> reporter: we heard from the president a reminder and the number of americans who have been killed, some of the people being held he is tajs are americans, how close the united states and israel are, there are many people here as we've been out walking around today when we were in southern israel today, in a city speaking with people

who are working as medics, they asked me where i was from, they said new york, brooklyn, they immediately started talking about neighborhoods where they have family. what the u.s. says here matters. they provide a ton of money and military assistance, economic assistance, also just on a personal level, so the fact that you could have secretary blinken making his way here will be something that matters to a lot of israelis. at the same time, the focus is what's happening in gaza, what will happen next and what happens with those hostages so many political divisions in the country in the days and weeks before what happened on saturday. everyone we spoken to none of that to them matters because they're so focused on this current situation and the urgent need of getting those civilians

in south earlier today, tell us what's happening now and what the latest is from inside israel? >> reporter: at times in the last couple of day there is have been sirens in tel aviv, sirens in tel aviv earlier today, at that time we were further south where there was rocket fire coming in a city about two miles away from gaza, sort of this rotating threat if you will right now that a lot of people feel. tel aviv is a relatively safe city, people we have spoken to, who live here, at different times of conflict and tension between israeli forces, israeli military and groups like hamas and here they felt relatively safe. but this weekend they say it feels like that has changed. nothing quite like what people are experiencing in those communities around and near hamas and nothing like what

palestinians inside of gaza are experiencing. what we're seeing is this back and forth flow of massive amounts of air attacks, missiles flying out of the gaza strip by hamas toward israeli communities and positions. israel firing back, there were a number of areas where civilian buildings, civilian casualties reported. from israeli rocket fire. israeli military, they say that the places they were hitting in gaza, they were targeting, places where hamas was storing weapons, command centers, they're trying to rid the area of hamas, that's what prime minister netanyahu said he wanted to happen. but it's impacting civilians as well in that community and we're hearing trickles of it from other people. close to 200,000 people inside gaza right now are sheltering in some of their schools.

>> ellison the reality of that war, if you live in gaza there's nowhere for you to go, the border has been sealed with israel, egypt that border is closed as well, where do those palestinians go that are civilians in this war? >> reporter: yeah, i mean the answer right now seems to be really nowhere. one thing that's different for palestinians in gaza versus israelis in those southern cities where we were today is that they have on the israeli side on those communities. that doesn't exist inside gaza, you have people fleeing to schools run by the u.n. in terms of that one border crossing, it was closed, there was an air strike and discussion on opening it, it hasn't been opened to anyone.

there's such a strict blockade on the israeli side that's totally sealed off. on top of that, tom, israel, they say they have cut off all electricity, they're doing a full blockade. back here at home, rallies and vigils are growing in numbers across the u.s. both in support of israel and the palestinian people. >> police are stepping up patrols in some cities, a few instances of confrontations between the two sides. law enforcement also monitoring for potential threats to synagogues and mosques. kristen dahlgren is in new york city. what are we learning about security preps and threats police may be focusing on tonight? >> reporter: right, so, they're setting up, you can hear me the

band practicing behind me. the security preps, they'll need to clear the area just after this so they can come through with the dogs and do a security sweep. they're taking security here very seriously tonight. the governor will be here as well as the mayor of new york city and thousands of new yorkers are expected to come out, so they don't want anything at all to happen. as you said tensionings have been running high during many of these rallies, so a lot of security on top of what's been mobilized over the past few days outside of synagogues and outside of mosques, sensitive areas like that, where the new york state police and local authorities have been gathered guys. >> as we see more videos and photos coming out of israel that passion and anger can tend to grow. kristen, what do the organizers tell you? >> reporter: i spoke with the

the military carry out a ground operation inside gaza. >> what are they focusing on? >> they're focused on gathering intelligence, both from a human intelligence trying to get folks, israelis in gaza, to provide them the intelligence they need particularly on where the hostages are located and also the signal intelligence, listening to the telephones of the terrorists, making sure they're looking at social media, all these things in which the terrorists communicate with each other, they're trying to take their signal intelligence and gather enough information so fi where are the hostages and where is the vulnerability inside gaza

in an event they need to conduct a full ground attack, where the command centers are located, ammunition centers located, so they can get armor, they're right to piece together a picture so when they execute this they're not going in blind. >> general, on that point, you brought up the ground invasion and the potential mission to rescue those hostages you're talking about israel has one of advanced mill tars in the world, yet these terrorists from hamas were able to break that wall and commit that attack. the ground war will be street fighting, how does the israeli military adapt and evolve to this ground level of battle. >> so this is going to be the most complex fight, keep in

mind, the reason why is so complex we continue to talk about these 2 million people in 140 square miles of terrain. the third most dense location in the world. so they have to deal with civilians, they'll have to deal with this ground attack that's going to consist of pretty much terrorists moving all over the battlefield. they've got to deal with tunnels. they can't fire in different locations because it may have hostages. they have to deal with the ammunition depots and they must preserve life, 2 million life aren't 2 million terrorists, you'll find some are good and some are bad. you don't want to go in there killing a lot of people, innocent people. so all of this they have to figure out and it's going to be hugely complex for them to do so, there will be a lot of

all right, growing concerns about the war in israel expanding to other parts of the middle east. earlier today hamas called on fighters across the arab and islamic world to show their support for the militant and terrorist group, it says the so-called mobilization will start on friday. nbc tehran bureau chief joins us now, hamas has support from iran historically in the past. iran's supreme leader has praised this attack. explain to our viewers the long history here between iran and hamas. >> reporter: well, tom, they have a long history, iran has

been supporting hamas for decades. but interestingly, they're ideologically opposed to one another, hamas is sunni and iran is shia. they're oppose to the different loips there. what they do share is common hatred for israel. they want to see the annihilation of israel. they thrown all of their weight behind them. as secretary blinken said hamas without be hamas without iran. that's why iran has been hamas' main patron for so many years.
