the war between israel and the gaza strip is intensifying. at least 1300 were killed over the weekend and the response has cost more than 1500 lives in the gaza strip. let's go live to claudio lavan dpa. we understand there is news on the war just breaking? >> reporter: that's right, frances. in the last few minute, the al qassem brigades has put out a new statement where they claim that 13 hostage, cincluding forei foreigners have been killed by the bombing. if true, that would put a hot of pressure both on hamas but also on israel, because it has continued, of course, to pound, to bomb gaza, a densely-populated area, putting at risk not only civilians but hostages. also there is a threat of a ground invasion. and one indication that that could happen soon is the fact
4:03 am
that israel last night told the united nations that 1.1 million palestinians should move in the next 24 hours, should relocate to the south of the enclave. and that means that all palestinians in gaza, more than 2 million people will have only one way out of there, and that is the gate toward egypt. but since that is basically closed to most, they will all be staying, huddling, sitting duck in a relatively small area. that's why the united nations is saying moving so many people in such a short space of time, well, that is bound to have devastating humanitarian consequences, frances. >> and given this breaking news about those hostages, even though not verified by us, there are more than a hundred hostages there in gaza. how can they continue to make sure that they are safe after this incident or even with a ground invasion? >> reporter: well, that's right.
4:04 am
obviously, if that is true, whatever the al qassam brigade is saying is true, they may be more in danger if there is a ground invasion which is seeming more likely as we are seeing. hamas has threatened to kill hostages for every time israel attacks gaza, but also, if there is a ground invasion and if hamas does not join the 1.1 million palestinians asked to go to the south, after that mass evacuation order by israel, and if they keep the hostages in the north of the country as it is expected, the hostages may become a target, or they may be hurt or killed in the crossfire if a ground invasion happens, or even worse, they may be used as human shields. now among the hostages, we know there are some americans, lester holt yesterday sat down with u.s. secretary of state antony blinken and asked him about that.
4:05 am
so let's take a listen. >> they want their government to stand up and take responsibility and find these folks and bring them safely home. what assurance can you give them? >> first, lester, you know this from talking to some of these families. no one can fully put themselves in their shoes. no one can know what this experience is like. we are doefrg we can to secure the freedom of those who have been taken hostage. . >> reporter: whether that means the u.s. is asking israel not to do anything rash like a ground invasion is yet to be seen. nearly a week since hamas attacked israel the county's still grieving for the hundreds of lives lost at the super nova music festival. raf sanchez takes us inside one of the earliest backgrounds of the war. >> reporter: the sun was rising

4:07 am
of joy, a place of dancing, and now there is just a deathly, deathly silence here. people had been making art. they were expressing themselves. and many of the people here are likely to have lost their lives. >> reporter: we walked among the ransacked suitcases, personal documents and an empty par still lined with half-finished bottles. the silence briefly shattered. israeli troops are running to the other side of the festival. we've heard gunfire. it seems like somebody has come in. this palestinian man carry ago knife, according to the israel military, had somehow entered the grounds. he was quickly detained. with the site so vast, authorities struggled to collect all the bodies. r for the israeli military, the festival site echoes with painful questions. there are so many families across israel asking, where was the army?
4:08 am
why didn't they stop this? what do you tell those families? >> i tell them it's the responsibility of the army. it's the responsibility of the army for the intelligence. it's our responsibility to guard the people of israel. we failed on saturday. this is our responsibility. but now we're fighting. >> reporter: fighting to make sure what happened here never happens again. >> our thanks to raf for that report. florida will begin chartering flights to get americans home from israel. governor ron desantis has ordered the state's division of emergency management to deliver supplies to israel and fly home florida residents. his office has heard from 35 stranded people. the order came hours after the white house announced the u.s. would arrange charter flights for americans in israel starting today. let's turn to the chaos in washington, d.c. where house republicans have to go back to the drawing board to try to select their house speaker
4:09 am
nominee. overnight, steve scalise dropped out of the running. he was unable to shore up the 217 votes needed to win the gavel. brie jackson joins us from d.c. after all that, where does the fight for speaker stand now? >> reporter: now the gop is essentially back to square one when it comes to pick picking a nominee. scalise could only afford to lose four republicans, and there were way too many holdouts who refused to be swayed. scalise said it was cheelear it wasn't going to happen for him. >> this house of representatives needs a speaker, and we immediate to open up the house again. but clearly, not everybody is there. and there's still schisms that have to get resolved.
4:10 am
>> reporter: jim jordan ran against scalise for the nomination. he would not say last night if he would run for the job again. jordan said he would wait to make an announcement out of respect for scalise. and it is still unclear if jordan could secure the votes needed either. kevin mccarthy, who was just ousted as pospeaker also refuse to say if he would run fen. republicans are expected to meet today starting at 10:00 a.m., and they will discuss possible rule changes and tray to pick a new candidate. but the clock is ticking for the decision to be made, pause new aid for israel could be tied up as this fight drags on. >> nothing can happen until that gets figured out. thank you. new jersey senator bob menendez is facing a new charge, alleging that he was working as a foreign agent for egypt. they say he took other steps that secretly aided the
