we expect he'll visit egypt as well. video just into our newsroom of the secretary of state meeting with the palestinian authority abbas. they want to keep the west bank palestinians out of the fight. the fatah party is part of the plo and they accept israel. it is not hamas. it's worth reading up on this and reminding ourselves the difference between fatah, hezbollah, hamas and all the other news worthy words to understand what's factual and what's not. case in point, there was a lot of talk online that hamas was using that $6 billion in unfrozen iranian money, but that's not true. that money was never distributed. now, apparently, it won't be. america and qatar have cut off iran's access. iran supports hamas, though blinken tells our lester holt there's no evidence iran had involvement in the attacks. >> iran has had a long
6:47 am
relationship with hamas. hamas wouldn't be hamas without the support over many, many years from iran. when it comes to this specific attack in this moment, we don't have direct evidence that iran was involved in the attack, either in planning it or carrying it out. but that could change. >> back here in america, we have absolutely no idea what's going to happen next at the capitol, as the u.s. house searches for a leader. congressman steve scalise, the republican caucus' choice to be the next speaker of the house, says he will not be the next speaker of the house, which means the house continues to be paralyzed. it cannot pass a law, it cannot fund israel, it can't fund our own government, it can't name a post office until it has a speaker. >> this country is counting on us to come back together. this house of representatives needs a speaker and we need to open up the house again. but, clearly, not everybody is
6:48 am
there and there's still schisms that have to get resolved. >> we're a ship without a rudder and i'm thoroughly disappointed in the process, and i just pray to god that we find something. >> there is something, but it's a conundrum is republicans have gotten themselves into. there are 217 republicans in the house. that means any candidate for speaker can only afford to lose four of his own party's votes to become speaker, if every other republican votes for him. or he could find votes somewhere else. where? the democrats. a republican speaker could make a deal with democrats to get the votes, but it would mean he or she would have to give those democrats something in exchange. two things to watch out for this weekend, obviously what appears to be a major imminent attack on gaza as israel urges more than a million people to move south away from the battle. and pols go to the polls on sunday. that country's support for ukraine may rest on who is the
6:49 am
next leader of poland. >> so much going on in our world. thank you very much, scott. and meantime, parents want to protect their kids. october is actually rsv awareness month, and for parents it should be a reminder there's a new tool in the fight to try to prevent it. rsv is a respiratory virus that can be fatal for the youngest of children. in past years, hundreds of children under 5 have died from extremely severe symptoms. tens of thousands every year are hospitalized. now there's a new shot, an antibody recommended by the cdc that can protect infants and children at increased risk. the american lung association says rsv typically starts off like a normal cold. >> when it turns more dangerous, as all this phlegm hits the lungs. so in babies we're looking for signs or symptoms of having trouble breathing. so if they start using their accessory muscles where their chest is moving up and down, this is the first indication i
6:50 am
teach parents where they need to go to the emergency department, because these babies are having trouble breathing. >> so watch for that labored breathing. also look for signs of dehydration. if there's a decrease in your baby's urine, for example, you should take them to the er. if you want to learn more about how rsv can affect your child, symptoms and new treatments, head to the american lung association's website at lung.org. 6:49 right now. stargazers everywhere can't wait for tomorrow's very rare event, an annual solar eclipse. >> it's the kind of eclipse that's commonly called the ring of fire. the moon lines up between the earth and the sun, slightly under totality, leaving a visibility outer rim, as long as you view it with the proper eye protection. in the bay area, the eclipse will only be partially visible, but wherever you are, the eclipse will peak at 9:15 tomorrow morning in the pacific time zone. it should end around one hour
6:51 am
later at 10:03. watch out for it. one small northern california county is already being flooded with eclipse chasers. modoc county runs through the path of full coverage and the san francisco gate reports most hotels are completely booked. >> that's cool. look for those special glasses. they even sell them at the convenience stores. when you're buying your lotto ticket, you can get some glasses. that probably would have been a better investment. >> they have these great projects for parents at nasa where you can create a product to safely view the eclipse. it's fun. keep the kids entertained. i can be the science teacher. let's talk about the partial solar eclipse. in the bay area we're not necessarily going to enjoy the sights as much as maybe folks in
6:52 am
southern california or other parts of the u.s. the sun will still be 75% blocked in the bay area. once that starts at 9:13, this happens when the sun, moon and earth align. it will last about two and a half hours. weather-wise, we're talking about that system, it is going to be partly cloudy. we have an early morning chance. but it looks like between the 10:00 and 11:00 hour, we should see high clouds, so it might be tough to see. you still may notice the sky darkening. if you are an avid sky watcher, you have some cool images to capture, please share them with me. i'll be up tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. with kira. san francisco, clear conditions right now. look how stunning the live shot is. satellite radar, you can see high clouds pass through. but here is what's to come. i really enjoy showcasing satellite radar because you have to look at this with the atmosphere and this is what's happening in the sky. so when you think about when the
6:53 am
rain and symptoms are forming, this is that cold front. typically behind cold fronts we see slight cooling and the hourly temperatures are already showcasing some cooling ahead of that cold front. right now at 12:30, we could see those temperatures still bump up into the 70s in fremont. livermore through morgan hill, we're talking mid-70s, around the coastline lots of 70s. but we could still see maybe some upper 70s and low 80s through tracey. binks is going to love his walk tomorrow morning. we've got mid-60s and 70s by the afternoon. by 1:00, we're going to see the majority of the system clear out. you'll still get cloud cover. again, not a ton of rain on saturday. if you live in the north bay, you'll be the ones to see it. we have a crash that we suspected over at the bay bridge. it was in lane number one, so i
6:54 am
believe it's completely cleared. we see improvement for all lanes. the backup a little heavier than you might expect if you watched about 20 minutes ago. a bigger build toward the san mateo bridge. no major issues. i want to call this out. the closure for part of the b.a.r.t. tracks, track work, as well as for cal tran. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:53 right now. happening now, governor newsom is making a major new announcement on clean energy. california has been selected as a natural hydrogen hub. the golden state will receive up to $1.2 billion from the department of energy to develop and deploy clean renewable hydrogen. the governor's office also says it could create 220,000 new jobs and cut up to 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions every year. >> good news there. next, a quick look at top stories, including breaking news in the middle east. israel orders an entire segment of gaza to evacuate. but the people there have

welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at the top stories on "today in the bay." first, breaking in the middle east, israel is ordering the evacuation of more than 1 million palestinians in the northern part of gaza. >> we have a live look at gaza city, which is included in this evacuation order. the u.n. has already called the
6:59 am
order impossible to meet in time. here is today's richard engel on the gaza border. >> reporter: israel is continuing air strikes against the gaza strip is retaliation for hamas terrorist attacks and now it seems a ground offensive could be coming soon. israel has given palestinians in the northern part of the gaza strip 24 hours to head south for their own safety. i'll have the full story coming up on the "today" show. >> the clock is ticking. by our calculations, the deadline is actually about seven hours from now. people have been packed in cars, trying to evacuate. the number of confirmed deaths on both sides of the conflict now tops 2,7 hundred. a former hamas leader has called for today to be a global day of anger. bay area law enforcement remains on high alert, but leaders do want to reassure people right now there are no credible threats. historically similar calls for a day of anger have led to large
