a remarkable veteran who served in the army for nearly a decade. >> since leaving active duty he faced serious challenges it is nice to help others. sheinelle, you have been talking about this one ever since you came back from nashville. >> it's a venue that works with creative vets, a nonprofit that helps veterans struggling with ptsd and other mental health issues it started out as a job for ricky but then became his own place of healing we wanted to honor his dedication to work so we asked his five-year-old goddaughter to help us with a surprise. >> at 40 years old, ricky andrews has lived a lifetime, growing up in long view, texas, he had big dreams of playing pro baseball but in college, the first baseman injured his shoulder and life took him down a different path

in 2007, he joined the u.s. air force, deploying to afghanistan. you have probably seen things that the rest of us can't even imagine. what was the most rewarding part of it? and what was the most challenging or the scariest? >> we do a lot of humanitarian type stuff so that was probably the best rewarding aspects of it. >> what was some of the harder times? >> i was a military cop. so if you could take that mind set of what police officers and first responders deal with on a day-to-day basis, multiply that by, you know, ten times. >> those memories would stay with ricky he left active duty after serving eight years. as he was ending his final deployment and returning home, he faced what he couldn't have imagined. >> one of the hardest times was my last deployment coming back home my dad passed away. >> ricky never got to say good-bye. >> the last memory that i have was the memory before i even left. >> ricky mourned his father, even as he turned to civilian life he says he had a hard time

adjusting. he moved to nashville, eventually taking a job as an outreach coordinator with a nonprofit called creative vets, an organization that works to heal veterans with service related trauma through art including creative writing, visual arts and song writing. >> what we do for the song writing for the music program that we have is we actually fly the veterans out to nashville to go backstage to the grand ole opry so they're not alone. ole opry. so they're not >> four months later, ricky faced his own darkest day. >> i actually had a suicide attempt. i had everything planned out i had the letter written, had the pills lined up, had everything ready to go i have some friends of mine that play down on broadway every weekend. that night they opened up with the national anthem. something reached out and grabbed me then i have a five-year-old goddaughter of mine that is my biological daughter.

the week after this would have been her fifth birthday. after that, i was like, this doesn't need to happen. >> weeks later, he signed up to take a songwriting program at creative vets. >> that four hours was better than any other therapy session i have been through in the eight years i have been out of the military super they are pewter. therapeutic. >> and his god daughter poppy who calls him dad, helped open his eyes in a new way. >> i was supposed to take her to the park one day i was just not feeling like it she looked at me and said, dad, a promise is a promise i was like, man, that really hit. because when i -- my last deployment before i left, my dad always told me, hey, you coming back i'm like, yeah, yeah a promise is a promise >> their conversation inspired ricky's song. >> dad, i'm worth it yea, life has torn you down. dad, hari heard it when you tolm

time. >> great food, great wine for a great cause. we got a new york battle let's start with the giants. >> okay. we are making my pretzel challah bagel dogs this is super basic, really easy i have all the dry ingredients in the dry mixer flour, sugar, salt and instant dough is yeast, which i love. pour in the wet ingredients, just water, eggs, oil, so the dough is super nice and soft it is so easy. with the sugar and oil and eggs in it, it is so moist and delicious. that gets kneaded for 7 to 10 minutes. it rises you can also rise it overnight this is the fun part. >> absolutely. >> so we have the hot dogs and
