at least 1900 people were killed in gaza. hamas is only escalating. ground troops are poised to invade gaza at any moment. they are still waiting to launch. this, as more than 1 million palestinians tried to make their way south. american citizens are among those in gaza, trying to get to safety. at least 29 u.s. citizens have been killed in the fighting. 15 remain unaccounted for. earlier today, president biden made a vow to the americans in gaza. >> i will do everything possible to return every american to their families. >> and tonight, we've learned that the pentagon has ordered a second aircraft carrier strike group to israel to deter a war.

>> and while many people have been trying to get out, some have been pushing to enter israel to support their loved ones. among them is the ceo of hello heart. mayan coen was in the u.s. when hamas attacked israel. she got on the first flight she could. she said one employee had to hide in a bomb shelter for 30 hours. some employees have been drafted and sent to fight. coen says this war is like -- unlike anything she has ever seen. >> my heart goes out to all the victims. at 11:00, here her perspective from the ground.

demonstrators gather in san francisco, some carrying signs. some have called it an all out for gaza rally. >> we want a cease-fire. >> for many years, the war between israel and hamas was deeply personal. >> we are here to urge our government to stop this violence. i lost family members yesterday. i lost a first cousin, his son, and a granddaughter. that was in the gaza strip. >> they drew attention to the plight of palestinian people in gaza. that is really military is calling on residents to evacuate. israel's military says it is

preparing for a ground offensive. >> people have had their access to electricity and water cut off. while this is happening, bombs are raining down on them. >> it comes after a deadly surprise attack by hamas militants on israel last week. the latest escalation in the mideast conflict. back in san francisco several thousand rallies, and then a march down market street. >> it is our responsibility to come out. >> we are calling for an immediate end to this bombardment, to this massacre, and what is amounting to a genocide of the people of gaza. >> the turnout today is what they hoped for. >> this is a beautiful turnout in the midst of all this grief and suffering of our people back home. people here are impacted. they have family members that

elon musk's x is facing new allegations. they say that musk broke the law when he fired an employee last year. last fall, when musk took over x, he told employees that if you can make it to an office and you don't show up, resignation accepted. some workers expressed outrage. the hearing on the case is set for january in san francisco. an investigation is underway after a shooting in oakland that happened at 10:30 last night. officers say two people were shot. one of them died at the scene. paramedics rushed the other person to the hospital.

police later discovered a third person was shot. that person got to the hospital on their own and is expected to be okay. a live look at the state capitol right now. the names of 44 firefighters were added to the firefighters memorial wall this evening. the ceremony began with a back pipe performance. the memorial wall honors firefighters who served in california and who died in the line of duty, or as a result of duty related illness or injury. several of this year's fallen firefighters served the area. one worked in oakland. one in south san francisco. one worked in san rafael. >> they have given their all to protect their fellow

californians. one call to duty, they came through. they gave as much as anybody can be expected to give. for their community, their profession, their brothers and sisters, anne state, this is a tribute to that selfless dedication. more than that, it is a tribute to the families that stand behind each of these men. and a reminder, if you are driving up the peninsula, part of north highway 101 is shut down. crews are working to replace a bridge. it includes all northbound lanes between whipple avenue and brittan avenue. drivers should plan for delays. this afternoon should heavy traffic on northbound 280. highway 101 is expected to reopen by 5:00 a.m. on monday. we will send an alert as soon as the highway reopens. download our nbc bay area news app for the latest updates. i can verify that crowd. coming up, ring of fire fever. alameda celebrates right.

a win for conservationists in sonoma county. a battle over the fate of a redwood tree and its surrounding forest is now over. this is near guerneville. earlier this month, the conservation group bought the land for $6.5 million. the group says they plan to transfer the land to the county for permanent protection. alameda's second annual pride weekend is underway.

festivities have kicked off with pride prom. this morning, there was a fun run before the main event, pride in the park. they say it is about celebrating inclusivity in the community. >> i created this because i love alameda and its community and i love the lgbtq plus community here. i wanted to create a pride for all ages. here we are. >> here we are. there is a block party running for another half hour. the mexican conflict in san jose hosted a vision clinic in honor of bi-national health week. in addition to the 500 people with appointments, they scheduled another day next month for more eye exams.

this is one of several events in the next week. >> sometimes, controlling their eyes is something they don't do. it is important to have this event to show the importance of taking care of their health. we are in health week. this is part of the different events we organize. >> they are already looking ahead to the next event. that is in november. it is a pumpkin filled affair at half moon bay. thousands came out for the 51st annual art and pumpkin festival. there was art, food, and music. everyone wanted to look at the prize-winning pumpkin, which broke a record. visitors were impressed by the 2700 pound monstrosity.

many paused to get a picture with it. >> it's my first time here. it inspired me to, instead of growing more zucchini, i'm going to try my hand at a giant pumpkin. i don't know if it will get this big. i'm going to do something different. >> last year, another farmer won. i don't know what is going up there in minnesota. >> it features a pumpkin., a pumpkin pie eating contest. a lot of people are talking about the eclipse. that was this morning. in the bay area, the ring of fire eclipse got 78% of it. this was the view from levi's stadium. not bad. one of several gathering spots across the bay area. in oakland, the ring of fire was seen by a watch party. the center opened early.

the event was an annular solar eclipse. >> the moon goes around the earth every month. sometimes, people ask, why don't we have an eclipse every month? well, you can educate people on the orbit of the moon, which is tilted a bit. most of the time, when the moon is in new moon position between us and the sun, it is either above or below. the son misses it. >> the bay area only saw a partial eclipse. for some, the skies were a bit cloudy. people were excited, all the same. >> we saw as much as we could see here. we peeked out at the right time. but it's an awesome experience. >> that is a great attitude. you had the classes on to protect your eyes. but folks, wait.

there is more in april. a total solar eclipse will be visible in the u.s., canada, and mexico. if there is one person that likes eclipses more than anyone else, it is rob and his twins. >> they are very excited about it. the next eclipse, looks like 25 to 30% coverage. >> what is the weather going to be like in april? >> we will get back to you on that. there was peak viewing from danville. that was a look outside the house. here is the correct use of the projector. there is the view there. christopher, with the cards.

the spaces between the thieves act like miniature pinhole projectors. those crescent sons popped up just in time as the clouds thinned out earlier today. the weather is really not doing any favors here on a rare event. there are low clouds. there's a mist over san francisco. there will be patchy fog .63 in oakland. upper 60s in walnut creek. we will see overcast skies to start the morning. there's a little bit of missed. watch what happens in the afternoon. tomorrow, we have mostly sunny skies and a little bit of a warming trend to wrap up the weekend. moving forward, around lunchtime, we should see 80s to wrap up the weekend. now, towards san jose, 69 in san francisco. 75 in oakland. before we get the warm-up, monday brings chance of rain.

it really falls apart as it tries to cross through the bay area. we will get more clouds in here on monday. in terms of rain chances, it looks like northwestern sonoma county will be the best bet. as you can see here, the rainfall estimates, not much to see. we will get more clouds. temperatures are cooling down. 60s and 70s. look what happens as we get towards tuesday and wednesday. just like we saw last week, we are talking 80s from san francisco to oakland. wednesday and thursday. we could be closing in on 90s again. south san jose, over towards fairfield. we will have to see if these bayside temperatures get too warm. we may see heat advisory's popping up for the second half of the week. the high pressure is holding on. no signs of any rain. that will stay to the north. if you look at now through the 23rd of the month, any rain chances we are likely to find will be north of mendocino county. we have that one chance that comes monday. look at san francisco. 80 degrees on thursday.

downtown is starting to warm up. we could have upper 80s in oakland. better chance of seeing 90s on thursday. we cool down as we head into next weekend. mostly sunny skies for the better part of a week. it is unfortunate this morning that most of the bay area was stuck in the clouds. >> oh yeah. it is wonderful. i feel like you should give lessons about how you can get your kids interested in this. >> you can get the pinhole projectors with that, too. >> in your children can give lessons. >> back on monday. >> already, rob. thank you. still to come, the 49ers are helping their own. and we cannot get enough of the ring of fire. check out this picture. that is near the utah border.

well, the special trick-or- treat experience in hayward today for kids with special needs. the fifth annual trunk or treat was held in hayward. this is put on by volunteers. in addition to trick-or-treating and a prize for the best decorated trunk, there was also a resource fair with games and giveaways. >> we just want to promote community, getting together, and also, awareness.
