we're live in washington with an update on the growing humanitarian crisis and the ongoing efforts to bring home stranded americans. plus, getting the word out. three leading contenders in the race for california's u.s. senate seat try to chart their future course. the message each has for undecided voters. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington is off. we'll start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> welcome back. >> thank you. it's going to really heat up over these next few days. it's going to be, like, starting out nice and cool, and then going towards 90s by the middle of the week. but we do see a system dropping in that's going to bring us a chance of showers for parts of the north bay as you head out into this afternoon. so as we take it hour-by-hour, we do see that chance of rain around ukiah, clear lake, parts

of northern sonoma county, in santa rosa we could see that at 5:00 this evening. we go throughout much of the day with dry conditions. clouds linger and we're going to have a mostly cloudy and cool day, as our highs reach into the mid to upper 70s. by tomorrow we see temperatures starting to heat up just a few degrees, but then by wednesday we're talking about 90s in the inland valleys. so you're going to have another blast of summer. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you're saying it's a good monday morning on the peninsula? >> it was until i heard about 90s in our future. we're looking at the speed limit for 101, and that's been the case since about 2:30 yesterday afternoon. they reopened the northbound closure. great news. this time instead of nine hours ahead, it was 14 hours ahead of time. we have a smooth flow of traffic. my maps have frozen. things are moving smoothly around the bay. we'll show you the richmond

bridge toll plaza, we still have the closure of the right lanes, but there's something different about the configuration. back to you. >> thanks. new this morning, nature giving people an early wake-up call near the oregon border. a 4.8 quake struck. a 4.7 rattled the same area on september 30th. developments in the middle east, u.s. secretary of state blinken early this morning paid another visit to israel. israel has yet to launch its ground invasion. more than 2,700 people have died in gaza, 1,400 in israel. at least 29 americans have died. also this morning, egypt is expected to allow foreign passport holders in gaza to start crossing its border today. while security sources in egypt say an agreement was reached to open the crossing, israel

maintains there's no truce of any kind, and it's not clear how long that crossing will remain open. let's get more from "today in the bay"'s brie jackson live in washington. brie, of course there is still the issue of stranded americans in israel. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, laura, scott. so the u.s. is working to evacuate americans to safety as the conflict in israel enters another week. week two of the israel/hamas war, and israeli fighters are preparing an attack by land, air and sea. in an interview on cbs's "60 minutes" sunday, president biden continued to pledge his unwavering support for israel, while condemning hamas. >> the most important thing is ending this brutality and hold those accountable. >> make clear that the united states stands with israel to

prevent the conflict from spreading. >> reporter: as the fighting continues, the humanitarian crisis is getting worse. the biden administration is working to get americans out of gaza through egypt -- >> where we can be safe physically and where they can have access to the essentials, to food, water, medicine, shelter. >> reporter: the u.s. is also ramping up efforts to free hostages. >> hamas wants to see if they can't get something, and i'm sure there will be some kind of exchange that they'll be looking for. >> reporter: a bipartisan group of lawmakers visiting israel was forced to find shelter, after experiencing the dangers firsthand, they vowed to help. >> we are working very hard to put together a comprehensive package to deal with the so many needs that israel has. >> reporter: a sense of urgency to send assistance to israel and to address the growing humanitarian crisis in gaza.

prime minister netanyahu has invited president biden to travel to israel. the white house is considering that request. laura, scott. >> we'll closely follow to see if that will happen as well. thanks for the latest. for those americans lucky enough to have already made it out of israel, the return home is often incredibly complicated and that includes the trek one of of our coworkers. kris sanchez is taking a look at that part of the story, live in san jose. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and laura. all eyes are on airports like this one, where we are starting to see people trickle back home from a tenuous journey from t aviv and from the areas they were evacuated to. as you heard brie mention, there is safe passage for americans out of tel aviv into israel this morning, and foreigners with foreign passports are allowed to leave from gaza as well.

we do know that there are about 600 americans in gaza still, according to the state department. thousands of other american citizens are leaving israel for cypress today, and the u.s. government is only arranging travel out of israel. after that, passengers are on their own to make it back home to the states. our nbc bay area colleague, edwin alvarado is among the americans who made it out, but not yet home. he is now in columbia, thanks to the columbian air force, which picked him and other passengers up, headed to portugal, the dominican republic, and finally to columbia, where he is originally from. it has been an excruciating wait to get out. >> when i get out, i see family members, family waiting for their loved ones, it's hard.

it's hard when you feel the fear of you can be killed any second. >> reporter: now, other families were reunited in tampa, florida, where almost 300 americans arrived stateside. they were able to make it out of tel aviv. they were transported by a nonprofit with the help of presidential hopeful ron desantis. we do know the u.s. state department is still working with airlines like delta, american and united in an effort of getting everybody back home safely. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people stranded. thank you very much. stay with us for the latest developments. we're keeping an eye on the situation 24/7. our website, a good resource, nbcbayarea.com. you can click the link on the trending bar. for the third time in a week, afghanistan is reeling from a powerful quake.

the latest, a 6.3, struck yesterday. it was centered in northwestern afghanistan. this is the same area where 2,000 people died over the past week. so far, a handful of new deaths are being reported from the latest aftershock. california's newest u.s. senator out with covid, laphonza butler posted the diagnosis on social media over the weekend, saying she's experiencing mild symptoms and will isolate, but continue to work remotely this week. vice president kamala harris swore butler in 12 days ago to fill the seat of the late dianne feinstein. the three leading democratic contenders vying for the feinstein seat next year are making a concerted push to win votes. yesterday in san diego they gathered for a forum. each yesterday shared their visions for california's future.

topics covered everything from the supreme court to social security to inflation, which porter tried to cover in this response. >> the single biggest thing we can do to address this is to invest in government policies that create more competition. >> we have to look at the social security trust fund and know that we have to raise the cap so we can make sure those who are worthy, ceos, corporations, millionaires and billionaires, pay their fair share. >> expand the court, put term limits on the court and we need to impose a code of ethics. >> so far, steve garvey is the only major candidate on the republican side. he just declared last week, calling himself a fresh voice with fresh ideas. california's primary will take place on march 5th. let's take a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning. it looks like a fog has rolled in. it may stick around for a while. let's check in with kari.

>> it's very hard to see there. misting, drizzling starting out. elsewhere, we are seeing a few clouds drifting by and it is a quiet start to our morning, with temperatures in the 50s for the most part. upper 50s for san jose, but then you head to the north bay and it's only 48 degrees in santa rosa and sonoma, and 58 degrees in martinez. as we go throughout the day in walnut creek, we're going to start out with a lot of clouds and we'll continue to see the clouds throughout the day, keeping those temperatures down as we only reach into the mid-70s. a few peeks of sunshine, especially this morning, but overall the coolest day of the week before things ramp up midweek. we'll talk more about that. mike, you're seeing gas prices maybe coming down a little bit? >> that's what i've been seeing as we're driving around. same leader as far as where we're looking, but it's 20 cents lower, particularly in livermore, $4.59 at diamond gas

gate bridge. the bay bridge is just fine. i was watching some flashing lights westbound where the taillights are visible. no more flashing lights. we'll check to make sure there's nothing across the span. it looks like a smooth flow of traffic. let's check in with bertha. >> wall street is set for a slightly higher open ahead of a busy week of corporate earnings. markets are coming off a mixed week. we have the dow and s&p 500 ending higher, but the nasdaq slipped just a fraction. oil prices are easing today, after spiking more than 5% on friday, as the conflict between israel and hamas fuels fears about production in the middle east. in focus this week, we're going to get data on retail sales, manufacturing and housing. earnings season heats up with about 10% of the s&p 500 reporting results, including bank of america, johnson & johnson, netflix and tesla. rite aid is filing for

bankruptcy, after dealing with years of losses and failed mergers. the drugstore chain has been unable to pay the cost of settling lawsuits related to its alleged role in the opioid epidemic. the bankruptcy filing will put lawsuits on hold. rite aid will close more than 2,100 stores nationwide. the collapse could affect some 40,000 jobs at the company, which just marked its 61st anniversary. more than three-quarters of holiday travelers are changing their plans due to inflation and rising prices. a new report from bank rate finds the biggest changes include driving instead of flying, taking fewer trips, and booking cheaper hotel accommodations. 70% of holiday travelers have at least one concern about their upcoming trip, led by worries that their plans will put a strain on their budget. a quarter are concerned they'll feel pressured to spend more than they're comfortable with,

hip-hop did, he started by selling tapes at oakland high school dances and house parties. he hopes the next generation continues to focus on originality. >> can you imagine getting one of those originals? >> that would be pretty cool. >> and find somewhere to play it. >> exactly. kari is back, nice and refreshed from a nice time off. >> i actually got to meet e-40 during my time off. that was really cool. so it was really cool seeing that, and also the cooler temperatures that we have for a little while. now we're going to be heating up. we're going to be talking a lot about that. let's get you started this dublin as we get started, and it's a clear morning here. we're going to start to see more clouds coming in and temperatures going from mid-50s to the low 70s as we head toward noon. so it's going to be overall a very mild day, only reaching about 78 degrees. all of these numbers about normal for this time of year, with upper 70s expected in novato and 79 expected in

concord, low 80s in san martin today. tomorrow, notice these numbers going up a few degrees. napa headed for 82 degrees, we'll be in the low 70s in san francisco, and we'll see some upper 70s for hayward. 78 degrees in mountain view. then on wednesday, it gets even hotter, and we'll be cranking back up that ac once again as we head up for 93 degrees in morgan hill, and we'll reach a high of 90 in santa rosa on wednesday. but we also have this symptom approaching and we can see the rain that's just starting to enter the far northwestern corner of california, as it heads toward the north bay later on this afternoon, there's still a chance that there could be spotty light showers moving through. it just looks like a few sprinkles, maybe a few hundredths of an inch of rain. the rest of the bay area is staying mostly cloudy. after that, the heat will build as high pressure starts to develop across the region, and then it starts to fade fairly quickly. so the spike in temperatures don't last very long, and thens

with 'approach next week, there could be a pretty good chance of rain as we head toward next wednesday. so that's well beyond the seven-day forecast. as we stretch it out ten days, we have a big range in temperatures, going from upper 70s in san jose today, to 95 degrees on thursday, and then it's coming back down. so by the weekend it's still feeling pretty nice, but we have to deal with the heat coming in midweek. mike, you're seeing some changes at the richmond-san rafael bridges. >> we don't have the trucks blocking the lanes, we still have right lanes blocked. notice a cement barrier. there's no chance they're going to reopen those lanes in the near future. we're looking at more funneling of traffic down. we still have these four lanes that are open as you're traveling west from richmond toward san rafael, and folks will have to get used to that for the time being. everything is fine, except for if you have an extra wide load and you know the vehicles

5:30. i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has this monday off. >> i'm laura garcia. let's start with a look at our forecast. meteorologist kari hall is back tracking what we can expect. >> it's going to be a really nice, cool day, but, also, mostly cloudy. and then we're also watching out for parts of the bay area to get a little bit of rain. as we get started with a live look outside in san jose, it is mostly clear and we are going to see those temperatures in fremont as you head to work in the mid-50s to start. now, notice that we see the sun just peeking out a little bit from behind the clouds, so it will be partly to mostly cloudy, and temperatures in the upper 60s, low 70s as we head into the afternoon, eventually reaching about 75 there. in santa rosa, expect a high of about 78 degrees, so overall a lot of upper 70s across much of the bay area. temperatures will start to heat up starting tomorrow. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you've been looking at the golden gate bridge.

>> it's misty and drizzly. we'll get a closer look. a smooth flow of traffic across the golden gate bridge. a little bit of yellow at the top of the screen, there may be mist as well. highway 4, 37, and the bay bridge start to see more volume. the rest of the bay, smooth flow of traffic. easy drive down to the south bay, where we should see 101 show a little slowing over the next ten minutes. back to you. a live look at gaza this morning. still under heavy bombardment from israel, but so far no indication of a ground invasion yet. president biden now suggesting it would be a mistake for israel to reoccupy gaza for the long term. more than 4,000 people confirmed to have died on both sides of the conflict. the number of dead in gaza, more than 2,700. >> thousands of american citizens in israel are expected to evacuate today from sea to cypress. the ship is designated for u.s.

nationals and their immediate family members. we have a look at the path those people will have to take, and those onboard will be responsible for arranging their own travel accommodations from cypress. if they cannot secure onward travel themselves, chartered flights may be arranged. emotions are growing and the tensions in the middle east spilling into the bay area. >> bob redell joins us live this morning with details on an apparent hate crime. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and scott. the san francisco jewish community relations council tweeted out this photo yesterday. you can see it on your screen. it shows two messages spray painted in red on windows to a business here in san francisco. one message reads death to zionism, the other death to israel. the council wrote, we are deeply disturbed by graffiti along market street after yesterday's

pro-palestinian rally in san francisco. we've reached out to leaders to investigate the crime. outside city hall a number of people waved the israeli flag in support of israel, which was attacked by hamas just over a week ago. a number of israelis are still being held hostage in the gaza strip. >> obviously the ultimate goal is to get them home, but it's also at some point to be proactive in not allowing these things to happen and for the world to realize what israel is dealing with on a daily basis, fighting for their land and their lives. >> i don't think that any murder of innocent babies and grandmothers and youth celebrating a happy festival, there is no justification, and the murder of all those innocent people. >> we want basic human rights in palestine for everyone, including jewish and israeli citizens. we don't want any innocent

"today" show stephanie gosk says their landlord apparently targeted them for their faith. >> reporter: good morning to you. law enforcement has concerns really on two fronts this morning, one that terror groups might use this opportunity to stage attacks in this country. they are also concerned that the anger that is mounting over this

app. a live look at capitol hill. the house remains in a holding pattern until a new speaker is elected. that may or may not happen tomorrow. a floor vote is scheduled for tuesday to approve ohio congressman jim jordan, but right now jordan significantly short of the votes he needs. on the other side, democrats are refusing to support jordan. many believe he was near the epicenter of the january 6th capitol siege. just announced in the last few minutes, nbc news will host the republican national committee's third presidential debate in miami. that's on wednesday, november 8th. the rnc has not yet announced the eligible candidates. former president trump has not participated so far. 5:37. disenchanted voters have gathered signature to recall district attorney pamela price.

they'll need to collect more than 73,000 to end up on the ballot. they call price too soft on crime. >> we need a da that's going to fight for the people, fight for everybody in alameda county. someone that's going to be there, honest, to give us justice, true justice, not a sentence that is nothing or a case that wasn't even reviewed or taken up by the da's office. >> price supporters held what they called a day of service yesterday. they argued her restorative justice programs are already working and will continue to be refined the longer she holds office. >> taking people, arresting them and putting them in a box for five to ten years and bringing them back out with $10 is not the answer. we have an attorney who recognizes that and is using data-backed policy to try to provide different outcomes, it's difficult to hear people who are relying on law and order

rhetoric without any foundation of fact. >> in a recent interview last week, price defended her policy, suggesting the crime spike started long before she became the da nine months ago. san francisco coffee lovers have had months to brace for this but it won't make it easier. today the original philz coffee locations closes for every, 24th in the mission district. they announced the closure early august. the company said workers would be offered positions at her philz locations. ready, set, headache. the 2018 summer olympic games will offer five new sports, including for the first time, flag football. the ioc also confirmed the return of baseball, softball, lacrosse and cricket. squash will be another first-timer. cricket was last in the olympics in the 1900s, and football was actually a demonstration sport

the first time l.a. host today games in 1932. of course, nbc bay area will be your exclusive source for not only the 2028 games, but next year's summer games in paris. >> looking forward to it. a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning. a dense fog advisory remains in effect and will extend to the north bay's valleys and the coast off the san mateo peninsula. let's take a look at what kari has in mind for us. >> we are going to have that low visibility and some drizzle to start out the morning. we're also watching a system approaching from the north that's going to bring the north bay a chance of some spotty showers, mainly later on this afternoon. most of the day is dry, but we are going to see clouds rolling in. then here we are at 5:30 this evening, we see light rain moving into ukiah and clear lake, as well as santa rosa. it does kind of fall apart before the rest of the bay area gets in on a chance of rain. santa rosa, it's in the upper 40s, it's cloudy and it does

stay cloudy throughout much of the day. we'll talk more about this and a warm-up in a few minutes. mike, you're seeing a quicker build at the bay bridge. >> the metering lights were turned on about five minutes ago, a few minutes earlier than over the summer. but we are looking at the backup build. we saw the slower sensors up the incline. highway 37 and 4 showing more slowing. highway 4 starts outside of antioch, through pittsburg and bay point. we're watching contra costa county, perhaps a stronger commute. we're looking ahead as well. during the day we'll have some tree removal work on 101, tiburon boulevard, state route 131. they're going to do some tree removal work during the day and they'll continue with the interchange, some work overnight, as well as matches along 131 through tiburon. so watch tiburon boulevard for work that continues all week over the course of the days and the nighttime in various spots. the rest of the bay shows a

suzanne somers, born in san bruno in 1946. in the 1970s, she shot to stardom in "three's company" and later starred in "step by step" and had a huge career in product endorsements, including her own line of personal care products. her she died yesterday after a long battle with breast cancer. today would have been her 77th birthday. the "today" show will celebrate her life. it starts at 7:00 a.m. after "today in the bay." we continue to highlight breast cancer this month, and cleveland clinic researchers are looking at a vaccine, a potential breakthrough that focuses on a protein that exists when a woman is breastfeeding, but findings indicate it is also made when cancer cells arise.

the vaccine focuses on destroying the protein at its earliest formation. we spoke with the first woman to be injected with the shot. she's a triple negative breast cancer survivor and she says after the vaccine, it's helping calm her worries the disease will return. okay, we were hoping to hear from her. let me tell you, the vaccine is actually still in the trial phase. it's also not yet approved for widespread use. right now researchers are primarily focused on treating triple negative breast cancer survivors, with the idea of expanding its use later to others. so promising thing there. >> yes, it is. the san francisco giants reportedly breaking new barriers, leaving the fan base buzzing. according to new reports, the team became the first in the majors to interview a woman for

the position of manager, she's already part of the coaching roster. she previously made history as the mlb's first time ever coach and filled in as first base coach. the giants brass previously said it would interview candidates in house first, before looking outside the organization to replace the previous coach. nobody ever really saw this coming, the undefeated niners, now defeated niners, went into cleveland with an out-and-out role facing a team on the ropes and it was a recipe for a letdown. it hurt, too. star running back christian mccaffrey and star wide receiver deebo samuels both injured during the game. brock purdy played the worst game of his career, and kicker jake mooney missed a 41 yard field goal. we all saw that.

ticket. this followed his decision to go 90 in a 55 in savannah, georgia, which prompted officers to stop him, obviously. the court later told him the fine is meant as an added incentive for him to appear in court, because it's the largest fine possible. the court is assuring him he'll only have to pay the issued fine once he answers to the judge, and that will be a lot less than what was actually on the ticket. >> wow. what a way to get you to show up to court. >> that's one way to get you to do that. also, if you do end up having to pay close to that, which they said he wasn't going to have to, you wouldn't have to worry about them speeding more because they don't have a car or a place to stay. >> that would get everyone to slow down. goodness. you thought we would be dipping into fall, but summer is hanging on, kari. >> summer is going to hang on for at least a few days. we're also, at the same time, seeing a cold front. we're going to have a big change in temperatures from the way we

start the week to the way we end the week. as we take a live look at san francisco, watch out for this dense fog that's been rolling around. it's not only here, but also moving through parts of the north bay, a dense fog advisory in effect for some of the north bay valleys until about 10:00 this morning. so just a heads up that visibility may drop rapidly as you're driving around parts of the north bay, especially, and then in san francisco we're in the upper 50s now. as we go throughout the day, we're going to see temperatures slowly climb, because of the cloud cover that will linger not only here, but across the bay area. so we head over toward the tri-valley, where dublin is going to hit a high of 78. we'll be in the upper 70s in martinez and much of the north bay, with santa rosa reaching 78 degrees. tomorrow it heats up, and we'll hit a high of 88 degrees tomorrow afternoon in fairfield. that will be the hot spot compared to the low 80s we'll

see in much of the south bay. on wednesday, those temperatures continue to climb. look at this, some low 90s returning for concord, reaching 90 degrees, and 93 in san martin and morgan hill. this morning we're seeing clouds coming in and there will be the slight chance that we could see some spotty rain in parts of the north bay, with clear lake, santa rosa, ukiah seeing rain right in time for the evening commute. so people getting off of work, heading home, a little bit of light rain moving through. but the heat will build for the end of the week. we'll have the hot temperatures for a few days, but cooling off for the weekend, and then next week we could be watching out for a chance of rain that could approach the bay area. it basically looks like a roller coaster. concord's ten-day temperature trend goes from upper 70s to mid-90s. temperatures the hottest on thursday. then we're back to the 70s for the weekend. next week we're watching out for rain chances. we may only reach into the 60s. so a lot going on here.

you'll want to make sure you're checking in every single day for the forecast because things will be changing day by day. mike, you're seeing bigger backups. >> things are changing minute-by-minute. more traffic volume in general coming to the toll plaza. the maze is fine, but we see blips through richmond. highway 37 holding steady, so is the north bay, mist and drizzle in petaluma, watch for that, and the golden gate bridge. typical build through contra costa county, 680 off of highway 4, still a half hour out of pittsburg and toward walnut creek. the build for vasco as well, but, again, no surprises. highway 84 shows more traffic, the dublin interchange moves smoothly. of course, the south bay, north 101 shows the build, but notice 237. we'll track that. happening now, today is the
