area admiral, it seems that these israeli forces have been poised, quite literally at the border waiting to go in for several days, but there seems to be a pause. how do you explain that? >> first, it is an enormous and complex operation. so i'm not surprised the israelis are really taking their time they've got 350,000 troops mobilized, savannah. as a point of comparison, in afghanistan we had 150,000 so it is a big military operation. but i think more importantly what you are seeing is the israelis doing everything they can to minimize collateral damage, to ensure that the gazan population has the maximum amount of time possible to get out of gaza city as richard said 600,000 have already done so. i'm sure israel would be glad to give another day. see another 200,000, 300,000 get out.

>> the flip side of that is that that gives hamas time to prepare and literally go underground. >> and hamas is literally taking care of their own people they told the gazans to stay put because they want human shields. this will be a complex operation for israel it will be intelligence driven. >> what about the humanitarian situation? because, of course, there is two ways in and out of gaza. one is to israel the other is via egypt egypt has said it doesn't want to open the gates to have a flood of refugees. they literally have nowhere to go. >> egypt is the contiguous land border there. egypt could take care of several hundred thousands of these palestinian refugees. the u.s. is pressing the egyptian government hard to do this. so far they have not said yes. >> with these carrier groups have been brought to bear into

this region. just the announcement of another group, eisenhower, the carrier group, to be stationed there. what is the -- it is not just a symbolic show of force. what is the mission there? >> first of all, yes, i commanded enterprise carrier strike group very similar to this. each one of these strike groups, we have ford and eisenhower, named for two american presidents, will be on station together very shortly. ike, eisenhower is on the way. the mission would be to go after hamas. excuse me, to go after hezbollah if iran gave the green light to hezbollah to begin launching missiles to the south. mission one, deter iran, go after hezbollah if necessary. mission two, pretty obviously american hostages. if there is something the israelis need us to do, then we

this morning they are opening up about their experiences. dasha burns joins us with more on all of this. hi, dasha. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning. most major airlines canceled flights in and out of israel. but here in florida the desantis administration launched aen an evacuation operation. we heard their stories. today more than 270 americans evacuated from israel are back in the united states. arriving in tampa overnight on the first flight to return to the u.s. in an operation organized by florida governor ron desantis. >> it is very emotional to be here and be away from all of that. >> reporter: 91 of the passengers arriving last night were children. >> these kids are having to dodge rockets. these kids are having terrorists come after them, not the way this world should be. >> reporter: he spent most of the last week huddled in a jerusalem bomb shelter with their toddler. can you describe the level of

fear right now, the level of fear that you had while you were in israel and the level of fear in your community? >> so on a physical sense, we're very thankful that we're here. we're very blessed that we have a governor that got us here. god took care of everything. but on an emotional level, it is overwhelming to be in a situation where you have a fear of your life. >> reporter: for many the homecoming is joyful, but the heartache isn't over. she was in tel-aviv when the war began. >> it is so much heartbreak to leave everything so suddenly and everything you love. i haven't gotten to say good-bye to a single person. my cousin is on the front lines of gaza, you know. >> reporter: still many more americans stranded having a hard time getting out. this is all part of an executive order that allowed the state to carry out this operation.

believe it is a hate crime. this morning, rising safety concerns here in the u.s. >> there is no question we're seeing an increase in reported threats. >> reporter: fbi director christopher wray asking for vigilance, warning hamas could exploit the violence in the middle east to plot attacks here in the united states while concerns rise that anger here at home may be spilling into violence. in illinois, a palestinian-american boy is dead and his mother in serious condition. a landlord repeatedly stabbed the muslim family renting his home in a deadly attack related to the israel-hamas war. >> the female is claiming that the landlord has the child in another room and apparently is stabbing or has stabbed the child. >> reporter: joseph czuba is now behind bars facing murder and hate crime charges for the father, the grief is overwhelming. >> he was such a pleasant boy. he was a sweetheart. he loved his ipad. he loved games he loved watching the cartoons

a 4.8 earthquake centered near eureka struck at about 3:20 this morning. no reports of any injuries or damage. a 4.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the same area on september 30th. san francisco coffee lovers have to brace for this. today the original philz coffee location closes its doors forever. it first opened 20 years ago at 24th in the mission district. philz had announced this back in august, saying it chose not to renew the lease. the company says workers will be offered positions at other locations. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. a dense fog advisory remains in effect. it extends to the north bay valleys and the coast of the san mateo peninsula as well. but expect a warm-up midweek. we're all over the map with this forecast. >> we are. we're going to see it first starting out with mild temperatures, more clouds today, as we also watch the north bay for a chance of some spotty

the u.s. attorney's office has not confirmed that information but, guys, there was a plea and sentencing hearing scheduled for this wednesday with joran van der sloot. in just two days, joran van der sloot will appear in court again. the prime suspect in natalee holloway's disappearance for years, never charged with her murder but he was extradited to the u.s. months ago, accused of attempting to extort the holloway family. he pleaded not guilty. but according to the holloway family attorney, the court will consider a plea deal this week with a major contingency. >> it was conditioned upon mr. van der sloot revealing details of how natalee holloway died and how her body was disposed of. >> reporter: kelly expects the detailed narrative of how natalee holloway died to be revealed in court this week.

but much under wraps. >> won't be any further investigation or search or anything like that if that is what you are asking for natalee's remains. >> reporter: back in 2010, he was accused of extorting a quarter of a million from holloway's mother. for information on her death the dutch national later agreed to reveal information for a $25,000 and the information proved false in june, federal agents transported van der sloot to alabama from peru where he was serving a 28-year sentence for killing a college student. on the ten-year anniversary of natalee's disappearance, beth holloway telling savannah she is still seeking justice. >> justice is not being served for natalee. >> reporter: according to kelly, that can never be delivered, but relieve from a long legal

before the interview came out. but i was talking to my mother the other day. and everybody knew that i was very unhappy, but just couldn't figure out why because everybody thought how i thought. you have got everything. what is wrong with you because i didn't know what was wrong with me either you have to remember during that time, no one was really talking about mental health. i just didn't understand and nobody around me understood. >> the other thing people asked me is you talked about how you were at the brink and then something -- you took something, and it changed you, and it was ayahuasca for you. >> yeah. >> ayahuasca really was -- >> that was the turning point. >> that turned you from the brink of suicide. >> and i never had a suicidal thought again. now, in saying that, ayahuasca is not for everybody and i want to be really clear about that you have to really have someone who is very trained to guide yo-
