to the war zone. this, as the looming israeli invasion appears closer than ever. we're live in washington with president biden's recent push for more help to u.s. allies. this is "today in the bay." this is friday morning. good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll get a look at our forecast in just a moment. first, if you plan to hit the road this weekend in the south bay, get ready. there's another freeway shutdown on tap. >> let's go to "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez. she's live for us this morning on highway 87. kris, this is all to deliver just a smoother ride for those commuters now zooming past you. >> reporter: yeah, that's what we hope. right now the traffic is moving smoothly in both directions, but by 9:00 tonight the southbound lanes are going to be shut down. you might be thinking, didn't caltrans just do this? they did, but it was in the opposite direction. i want to show you the map of
5:02 am
where this is happening. this is 87 that is going to be shut down between the 280 connecter to the north and the 85 connecter in the south. that's starting at 9:00 tonight. the goal is to reopen in time for the monday morning commute. this work is part of a $69 million project that will replace the pavement, update the ramps at six different intersections, and improve drainage. guardrails and barriers will be upgraded, and the bike lanes are going to be resurfaced as well. when the northbound lanes were closed, the reroutes we found out reroutes can eat up some time. >> i live down the street. maybe 20, 30 minutes. it just depends. that's probably putting it lightly, though, honestly. >> reporter: i don't want to jinx things, but caltrans has been reopening projects like
5:03 am
this ahead of schedule over the last couple of months. but regardless of whether or not they finish on time or before schedule, you're going to have some reroutes, and mike and marcus are walking us through that or driving us through that. >> we're not driving, for sure. mike is definitely going to teach us some of the roundabouts. a lot of folks are going to have to figure this out. >> this is a great direct route, but unavailable in the southbound direction. i'm going to walk you through what you have to do. this is going to add a lot more time. that red section will be blocked off starting tonight at 9:00 p.m. between 280 and 85. you have two main routes to get around. you can head over to the north on 280, if you go north on 280, travel to 17 and 85 back around. if you go southbound, you can get to 101 and get back onto 85 north. if you go the 17 route, that will add ten miles.
5:04 am
the 101 route will add 15 miles. it's going to add at least 10 to 15 minutes, more like 20 to 30 minutes with a lot of congestion. that's going to be an issue from friday night tonight at 9:00, until monday morning, possibly at 5:00. hopefully they'll reopen earlier. >> thank you very much. 5:03 right now. now to developments in the middle east, a live look from israel towards the gaza border. just in, the israel defense force says 200 hostages are in gaza and most of them are alive. there's also a new update this morning on casualties, with more than 5,500 confirmed deaths on both sides of the conflict. 32 u.s. citizens are among the dead. 11 more are unaccounted for. it comes with news of an overnight explosion at a historic church in gaza city. the church is considered one of the oldest in the world. it was reportedly serving as a

shelter for several hundred displaced palestinians at the time. it's not clear how many people died, but we know video shows survivors being pulled from all of that rubble. church leaders in jerusalem are blaming it on an israeli air strike. israel is still looking into that incident. governor gavin newsom this morning is headed to israel ahead of his scheduled visit to china. the governor is expected to be in and out of the war zone before the end of the day, with plans to meet with families impacted by the violence. california is also sending medical supplies to the region for people on both sides of the conflict. in our next half hour, ginger conejero saab will take a closer look at the governor's timetable. an emotional address to the nation from president biden, calling for new american support to both israel and ukraine, and he's calling it vital for america's national security. confronting this growing global tension head on. >> reporter: president biden, in fact, said it is american leadership that holds the world together. that was his argument in what was only the second oval office address of his presidency, underscoring the gravity of the message he wanted to deliver directly to the american people. as war rages in the middle east and in ukraine, president biden making the case that the distant conflicts directly affect america's national security. >> history has taught us when terrorists don't pay a price for their terror, when dictators don't pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos and death and more destruction. >> reporter: the president expected to make a pitch to congress today for $100 billion in aid, $60 billion to ukraine, the rest for israel, taiwan, and addressing the migrant influx at the southern border. amid concerns americans are growing weary of sending tax

5:08 am
president biden also called on all americans to reject hate and to denounce anti-semitism and islamophobia, and he also talked about the need to keep partisan politics from interrupting the responsibilities he said we have as a great nation, an apparent reference to the need for the house of representatives to elect a new speaker so that this aid can actually begin to flow. >> nothing can be done until that gets done. thanks for the details. our coverage continues in all of our newscasts. for the latest updates, visit our website, nbcbayarea.com. you can also get alerts sent straight to your phone by downloading our free nbc bay area app. new this morning, a unique new push from hollywood a-listers to try to end that bitter actors strike. the group includes george clooney, scarlett johansson, tyler perry and emma stone. it's reported they're offering to provide the union $150 million to offset costs for studios and streamers over the

gilroy hit a high of 100 degrees. how about 83 today? it's going to be so much better, much more comfortable. but even these numbers are slightly above what we typically see for this time of year, with a high expected of 84 in danville and pleasanton, oakland reaching 73 degrees, and some mid-70s for san mateo, daly city back to the upper 60s. we'll also see the return of 60s in san francisco, with the downtown area reaching 70 degrees and 74 in mill valley, in santa rosa look for a high of 82 degrees. as we approach the weekend, more clouds, cooler temperatures, but also watching out for a chance of rain, especially sunday morning into the early afternoon. that is in and out of here fairly quickly. we go back to dry conditions. we may also start to see those winds picking up for the middle of next week as our temperatures stay nice and mild. take a look at the seven-day forecast for inland areas today, headed for low to mid-80s, but

until, potentially, 5:00 a.m. in the past, including the northbound side, they had that reopened a number of hours ahead of time, nine hours last time, i think, for 87. that may be the case for the southbound side. until that is the case, we have workarounds. you can take 280 to 17, 280 north to 17 south and then back around on 85. that will add ten miles to your route. meanwhile, if you're going the other direction, you could take 280 south to 101 and get over toward 85. that will present more mileage, 15 miles instead. so you have two options to take you around. but 10 miles or 15 miles, combined with all that traffic that can not take 87 south, that's going to be a lot of slowing, perhaps 20 to 30 minutes in some cases at the peak of weekend traffic flow. that's southbound starting tonight at 9:00 p.m. and lasting potentially until monday morning at 5:00 a.m. caltrans has been great about

a look at our day planner for today. we're in the upper 50s this morning, and at noon it's 75 degrees. really nice day ahead. definitely cooler compared to yesterday. it continues to cool off this weekend. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. we might have had a little breeze that moved the camera for a second in fremont. traffic is flowing much better than other places in the bay. a little slowdown for highway 4. we'll double-check on the timing for contra costa county coming up. >> thanks, mike. 5:46 right now. house lawmaker jim jordan is taking another shot at being house speaker. the first two votes fell far short of the 217 that's needed. >> as nbc's garrett haake reports, the growing rift within the republican party is leaving even jordan supporters frustrated. >> reporter: marcus, laura, this is a mess right now. the capitol is totally frozen this morning. there is a plan, at least for now, to have a third vote today for jim jordan to try to become

speaker. that was also the plan yesterday, and the house instead basically never really came into session. republicans spent the day arguing with each other. they shot up their own backup plan of trying to take the temporary speaker and give him some additional powers while they and jordan got their act together. and even late afternoon, early evening meeting yesterday between jordan and the people opposed to him didn't appear to flip anybody. and now a lot of republicans are asking, what is the plan, including matt gaetz, the guy who arguably got them into this mess. >> i think a reasonable question to those holding out and not voting for jordan, what are you fighting for? what are your objectives here? >> some of these anti-jordan folks say they do not believe he has what it takes to be speaker, to be a leader in this country, and they're more dug in because they've been getting death threats to their office for refusing to support the more conservative candidate. i can tell you from long experience covering congress,

that is not the kind of thick that's going to get someone to change their mind. jordan is talking to reporters, trying to drum up more support. as we stare down a weekend of 17 days now without a speaker, things are looking pretty bleak in the building behind me, guys. >> thank you very much. later on today, a special hour devoted to an issue defining a generation, children and social media. the u.s. surgeon general is calling the crisis the defining public health issue of our time, saying social media is an important driver of mental health. nbc's senior correspondent kate snow talks today with children about their relationship with social media. one young woman says she was 10 years old and struggling to make friends when she joined social media. but the anxieties eventually led her to a serious eating disorder, and many stays in the hospital. >> he looked me in the eyes and said the insurance called and asked for your prognosis, and i had to tell them that you are

for the afternoon, with not as much of a hazy sky, and that measure of particulate matter puts it in the moderate range. we're going to see continued improvement going into the weekend. and if you missed your chance yesterday to see those big waves along the coastline, it's still going on today. there's a beach hazard statement in effect, just a heads up not to get in the water. we have rip currents and sneaker waves. never turn your back to the water. keep an eye on everyone around you, as well as your pets. we're also going to see those waves calming down as our temperatures go down the next several case, with hayward and mountain view today headed for 77 degrees. in oakland, 73 degrees, for many of these spots it's going to be at least 15 to 20 degrees lower than it was yesterday after seeing some of those record highs. and then for tomorrow it drops another 10 degrees, so we're only looking at some low 70s for san martin, and santa rosa for tomorrow afternoon reaching 71 degrees, and maybe even some
