warm days around the bay but a fall day in store. san francisco, mostly clear start, kira mentioned, patchy clouds hanging on. start with 55 degrees. another clear start over in walnut creek. good morning to you. do it at 57. only areas watching this morning, fog has been a little problem, is around novato. visibility at times going down to half a mile. a spot of concern this morning, but at the morning goes on we get more sunshine. keeping temperatures feeling like fall. although tomorrow we are looking at a rain chance. as i was saying, a perfect fall weekend that should continue on into next week. talk about the details in the full microclimate forecast. back to you, kira. >> thanks, cinthia. see you soon. new out of the middle east, the rafah krausing is partially opening meaning first time since the war erupted two weeks ago aid is able to get through to gaza. we have a live look from israel towards the gaza border where at least 20 humanitarian convoys

transferred aid supplies to palestinian vehicles. that will then take the items in to the gaza strip. this comes as the first two american hostages have been freed by hamas. a 17-year-old girl and her mother from outside of chicago. the father saying he's relieved his family is finally safe. >> i've been waiting for this moment for a long time, two weeks. i haven't been sleeping for two week. tonight i'm going to sleep good. >> the mother and daughter we're told are still in israel. the father only able to speak with them a few minutes yesterday, but, of course, they remember more american, still held captive. "today in the bay's" reporter continues our coverage. >> reporter: a mother and daughter finally freed becoming the first american hostages released by hamas. you can see that moment in this video released by hamas. >> glued to the tv for two weeks

hoping to good news. finally it comes. >> reporter: he sizz his daughter and ex-mom live outside chicago but taken hostage visiting family in a kibbutz newspaper the gaza strip. >> sounds very good. looks very good. she was very happy. and she's waiting to come home. >> missed you so much and hoped you were alive and safe, and we know you're so brave and strong and glad you and your mom made it through this. >> reporter: first released by a military spokesman saying freed for humanitarian reasons disprove what he called false and baseless claims about the group led by president biden. hoping this is just the beginning. >> there are still ten additional americans remain unaccounted for in this conflict. >> reporter: israel now confirms majority of hostages are still alive and in gaza. at least 20 of more than 200 under 18 years old. >> all of the civilians

>> reporter: they pray for the remaining hostages, for victims of war and loved ones living in darkness daily. reporting for "today in the bay." we are learning more about governor newsome's believe trip to israel. a in a post newsom shared stories of some people he spoke with. one a californian shot during a missile and grenade attack. newsom says she covered herself among dead bodies to survive. the governor also shared these photos saying he felt resiliency and community among the people there. newsom saying "that's the israeli spirit and it's also the california spirit." the state of california is working to get medical aid to both israel and gaza. california has the second largest population of jewish people in the u.s. only behind new york state. and the golden state is home to the largest population of arab-americans in the u.s.

after israel, governor newsom continued his scheduled trip to china. meanwhile, a warning for americans traveling abroad anytime soon. this, a live look at sfo. the state department has issued a worldwide travel advisory. the agency says high tensions raised chances of terror attacks or other violence and it doesn't mean you should not travel outside the u.s., but the state department warns americans to be on alert. ed israel-hamas war enters its third week. on the stanford campus a large crowd gathered to protest. organized by the group students for justice in palestine. supporters marched across campus from the student union to memorial church. they are calling for stanford to acknowledge what they call "war crimes" committed by israel. >> the palestinian people have been oppressed, they've been put

"today in the bay" explains. >> reporter: once a star baseball player here at serra high in san mateo. now danny serafini is behind bars in connection to the 2021 murder of his father-in-law in north lake tahoe. danny serafini and 33-year-old samantha scott in custody after being arrested in nevada for their connection to the 2021 murder of 70-year-old robert gary spohr and the attempted murder of his wife, 68-year-old wendy wood. on june of 2021, spohr was found dead by a gunshot wound inside of his north lake tahoe home. his wife wendy shot, too, surviving injuries but passing away a year later. the sheriff's office says both victims of serafini's in-laws. two years releasing this video of a man wearing a hoodie and face mask walking near the lake tahoe home several hours before the murder took place. eventually running into the driveway of the home. authorities now believe the man is serafini.

>> we do believe that masked individual was in fact daniel serafini. at this time i'm unable to comment on samantha wood's case due to ongoing investigation. >> reporter: serafini was a star baseball player at serra high in early 1990s, drafted in the first round of the major league baseball draft and playing in the majors over a decade. authorities say that serafini and scott know each other and that scott knew the victims as well. >> samantha scott was an associate of the family, i believe she possibly acted as a nanny at some point or as a family friend. >> reporter: the plaz placer county sheriff awaiting extradition into placer county. reporting for "today in the bay." a warning for people in yountville, a mandatory water boil order. e. coli was in the water.

welcome back. this week marks 34 years since the loma prieta earthquake rattled the bay area. scientists say the region is due for another big one.

schools across the yeah hold shakeout breaks and hosting a city-wide disaster prep drill at saint ignatius preparatory school in san francisco. neighborhood emergency response teams practicing search and rescue techniques, patient triage and other essential disaster relief skills. the drill is under way now and end at 12:30 this afternoon. first responders are known to save lives and property, but this story is about police officers and firefighters in solano county who prefer a different kind of rescue. helping save a little girl's birthday party. the 9-year-old invited her entire class to help her celebrate, but only two kids showed up. "today in the bay's" reporter shows us how a social media post turned it all around. >> sad and i thought more people would come. >> reporter: that's how kay-lonnie felt when only two

kids showed up for her 9-year-old birthday party. her family rent add bounce house and bought lots of party food. >> a giant cake, ice cream. we had chips, candy. >> it's like this big, by birthday cake. like the largest size they had. >> reporter: in need of guests the girl's aunt post add message on social media inviting the community to come out. >> she's really upset about no kid being here, she wrote. >> i noticed a post that said a 9-year-old didn't have enough people show up to her birthday party and they were really upset about that. >> reporter: soon city police sergeant scott heine knew he had to interview rallying the night crew, fire department and the even shopping for gifts. >> i thought, did i do something wrong? they came to shut it down, i thought. >> happy birthday. >> reporter: suddenly kay-lonnie's birthday party got a big boost. got to jump into the fire truck

>> going to be crowded but the perfect fall-like temperatures. really, chances today before it starts to rain tomorrow. get you details. yeah. on that microclimate forecast as we look outside towards the bay bridge. no fog there as you drive out on the roadway, but that cloud cover is coming. right now off into the ocean, and we're looking on satellite and radar picking on just a few hints of rain mostly offshore. big event is tomorrow. for today, here are those fall-like temperatures. after a warm week we had, do 60s along the coastline. half moon bay really famous pumpkin patch but a lot more around the bay ones. smaller wurns to visit, to. temperatures low 70s. martinez. 73 los gatos and san martin 73 degrees. there is plenty to do aside from pumpkin pamps. how about a coast in sausalito? 60s and cloud cover perfect weather to walk there around the waterfront. bring a jacket. could turn breezy at times.

look downing in palo alto as we take ucla and stanford kickoff at 7:30. keeping the game mostly in the 60s. bring a light jacket maybe a light little blank it to keep you cozy, because as we go on into the end of the game it will start to become a little more chilly. here is that main event greets us early sunday morning. starting in the north bay around guerneville, santa rosa in the middle of the night. everybody else seeing cloud cover but should sweep on down into parts of novato and san rafael and heavier downpours before the sun comes up. through the day, spotty for everybody else. time stamp up there to help guide your day around the bay area. not a huge rainmaker but some cells could develop right there around marin by the morning hours, coastline and where i'm seeing bulk of this activity happening. north bay and the coastal mountains. half moon bay, santa cruz

welcome back. san francisco is known as one of the greatest foodie cities in the world. this is an incredible story about a homeless addicted man turned michelin star chef sure to make you "bay area proud." he wants to do more than just make good food. he also wants to do good. >> reporter: there are fewer than 200 michelin one-star restaurants in the united states. each with its own unique flavor of success. still, it's hard to imagine anyone with a story as remarkable and rewarding of that

of this chef and mission district restaurant. >> really cool that i feel like i went on a journey. >> reporter: it is a journey, seth says that started as a child in texas, and an introduction to drugs. >> as a kid it's fun. you don't really know. you know? so -- yeah. until you realize that, oh, this -- you know, isn't fun. >> reporter: not fun as described where seth ended up. a little more than a decade ago was an addict at times living on the street in san francisco's tenderloin. the bottom seth needed to hit to change the direction of his life. >> the way i feel about it now is, like, everyone deserves miserable, gross, gnarly falls. because it's only, it's the only way you're going to have a moment, that one moment to hold

on to and say, like that is what i don't want ever again. >> reporter: seth eventually found himself at the salvation army harbor life center and began putting his life back together. >> they helped give stability while you're finding your community. >> welcome to wednesday's. >> reporter: seth worked in restaurants his whole life, that community was in a kitchen. he rose up the ranks in the san francisco food world until opens a sitto a couple years ago. seth didn't just want it to be a place where they made good things. but where the they did good things as well. which explains how jeff cristobal came on staff. >> treated me like one of his own. i wasn't differentiated from any of his workers. i was part of the team. >> working on a cheesecake. >> reporter: when seth opened the restaurant he went back to the salvation army partnering with hem on a paid internship program. a former addict himself graduated from the salvation army's culinary training

clouds hanging off just off to the pacific start to roll on in on this saturday. a very cloudy and chilly start right now in pacifica. 46 degrees. you might also notice drizzle out there and throughout the day keeping temperatures in the 60s. mostly cloudy and for our inland valleys, that cloud cover will come in later on in the day as well. only topping up those temperatures in upper 60s and low 70s. that fall-like weather is here today. i think it's the perfect day to get outside, take family photos, pumpkin patches. the whole fall feeling before we get ready for this. shower chances arriving in the bay area. early on tomorrow morning, full timeline and how it will impact sunday plans and the week ahead coming up from the full microclimate forecast. back to you. new, a deadly crash on the peninsula. this happened just after 2:30 this morning on northbound 101 near the san antonio road exit in palo alto. the chp telling us a motorcycle

was killed. you can see that white jeep with major front-end damage, and the motorcycle lying in the roadway there. northbound traffic backed up for nearly two miles towards the avenue off ramp. just learned moments ago northbound 101 is now reopened. also new this morning out of the middle east. the rafah crossing opened to allow humanitarian aid convoys into the crossing for the first time since the war began two weeks ago. we know that about 20 trucks have been filled with aid, and have entered the crossing. people were removing aid from the trucks and loading them into palestinian trucks that were heading in to the strip. this comes as some hostages have been freed by hamas. a 17-year-old girl and her mother from just outside of chicago. the father saying he is relieved his family is safe. >> waiting for this moment for a

victims are serafini's in-laws. two years ago authorities released surveillance video of that man wearing a hoodie and face mask walking near think home several hours before the murder took place. eventually that person ran in to the driveway of the home and authorities now believe the man is their son-in-law. >> i do believe that masked individual was in fact daniel serafini. at this time i'm unable to comment on samantha scott's involvement in the case due to an ongoing investigation. >> serafini and that woman, scott, facing charges for murder and attempted murder. the placer county sheriff's office a awaiting extradition from nevada back into placer county. after more than two months in the hospital a police officer shot in the line of duty finally is going home. back in august officer erin allen responding to a call and

suspect shot her in the chest just below her bullet-proof vest. she was rushed to the hospital and endured six major surgeries, but yesterday she got to go home where she will cnu recovery. allen is the department's first woman officer shot in the line of duty. and if you're headed out this weekend, highway 87 in san jose is shut down this weekend. caltrans put that into effect last night at 9:00 p.m. cries that worked all night, they were repaving and repairing the road. the closure includes all lanes from highway 85 to the julian street undercrossing. this is the second time caltrans shut down this stretch of highway 87. in september it closed all northbound lanes there for the same repairs. crews are expected to finish up by 5:00 a.m. on monday. just in time for the commute. let's turn now to our mikey inouye with help navigating that closure. >> reporter: we meet again. this time the southbound side of

87 that is undrivable from interstate 280 to highway 85. this is scheduled from the friday night closure through monday morning at 5:00 a.m. basic alternates simple. to the north, go on highway 17 via northbound 280. loop back on highway 85. that adds about an extra ten miles. or to the south. you can head south on 280 then to 101 south. loop back on north 85. this route is another 15 miles. with congestion, it's more like 20 and 30 minutes as far as those alternate routes and in projects past caltrans opened 9, even 14 hours earlier than scheduled. stick with us for changes and i'll be here for you again monday morning. >> all right, mike, thanks. a driver is in police custody and in the hospital after a series of crashes in san francisco. this is a look at the final crash. investigators say the suspect drove a truck into a high-end furniture store neither eighth

and townsend yesterday. witnesses say the truck hit someone walking by before plowing into that store. both the driver and the pedestrian were taken to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. >> i was just up in my apartment in this building and then heard a large crash and i could feel a sudden jolt from the whole building. >> before that crash police say the suspected driver had hit a car a few blocks away and then took off. the same suspect then hit three more cars before finally hitting that pedestrian and crashing into the furniture store. police say it remains an active and ongoing investigation. four people arrested in connection to an organized crime ring targeting upscale leggings and workout wear. walnut creek police say the suspects are accused of thefts in lululemon stores in santa rosa and napa. the culprits consult wednesday afternoon inside a lululemon store at broadway plaza in

nearly two miles. we just learned in the last half hour northbound 101 is now reopened. and in the south bay, southbound highway 87 in san jose shut down for the weekend. caltrans closed it at 9:00 last night. crews repaving and repairing highway 87. the closure includes all lanes from highway 85 to the julian street undercrossing. this is the second time caltrans shut down this stretch of 87. last month it closed all northbound lanes for improvements. highway 87 will reopen by 5:00 a.m. monday. a live look outside in san jose this morning where matt mahan, mayor matt mahan holds his first state of the city address later today. the mayor is expected to address his accomplishments since taking office eight months ago, and that's where he are hold it. he hit the street yesterday with beautify sj to clean up debris saying that clean streets tie in with another campaign issue of his. which is reducing the number of
