right now at 8:00, food, water and medicine arrives in gaza as the fighting intensifies between israel and hamas. we have the latest. the new campaign hoping to put a positive spotlight on san francisco. first from clear skies to clouds. it's dry now but some places could see rain and thunder tomorrow. meteorologist rob mayeda, you called it weather whiplash. >> it was 90s and heat advisories, and it's cooled off for the weekend. not a lot to show for it in changes. but the weather system is lurking offshore, bringing rain

today. it was focused on people and community groups getting involved. four things, wants the city safer, cleaner, more affordable housing and an easier place to invest. putting san jose back on track with the basics. >> basics like ensuring everyone is safe in their home, neighborhood, place of work and place of worship. this year we have pushed hard to maintain san jose's status as the safest big city in the bay area and put ourselves on the path to being the safest big city in america once again. >> he also applaud thousands of volunteers who have invested time in making it a better place. it's the largest city in the bay area. san francisco's reputation has deteriorated in recent years. a new campaign hopes to change

that, highlight the rich history and innovation in the city by the bay. >> i'm still pretty new, really wanted to get involved in the community. >> reporter: she moved to san francisco a year ago, and is volunteering to help with a mural project that's part of a larger effort to showcase the best of san francisco. >> i think the objective of this event, i definitely agree. it makes me want to come out and maybe be part of a change. >> it's the kickoff of the entire campaign, all starts here. san francisco, a community, civic pride celebration. >> reporter: the event was held this week as they launch the it all starts here campaign. it's privately funded with individual donors. >> about a $4 million campaign. you'll see a lot of media assets the next month, television commercials, billboards. any campaign, it's great to have the media assets.

>> there's a certain inexplicable magic that happens in this cauldron by the bay. >> reporter: there's a video. there are currently signs of recovery with new businesses but it faces an ongoing narrative elsewhere about a slow downtown, homelessness and other challenges. >> it's a lazy narrative. if you go to any neighborhood and look around, talk to people, you'll see the culture, food, vibrancy, the people. >> this is to instill pride in san francisco, to instill hope and get people excited about san francisco. you have to counter the negativity with the positivity going on. >> reporter: neighbors can share stories on social media, and there's a reminder the city is open for business.

thousands from around the globe are expected for the apex summit. optimism is getting a boost and people are ready for it. >> the city is about remembering our roots of coming together. >> reporter: christie smith, nbc bay area. the fighting between israel and hamas is intensifying, missile strikes have been launched throughout the day, also hitting gaza city. 20 trucks entered carrying food, water and medical supplies flue the rafah crossing. it's called a rock in the ocean for what is still needed in gaza. we know what president biden said in a phone call with the american hostages released by hamas yesterday. the mother and daughter were part of the roughly 200 people taken hostage during the surprise attack on israel this

month. he told the woman he's glad they were released. >> hey, nat, how are you? god love you. >> for israel. >> that's been long serving, just delighted we could get you out. been working on it a long time. going to get them all out, god willing. >> it's unclear if there are other -- unclear whether other americans will be released. governor newsom shared more images from his visit to israel ahead of his trip to china. he met with victims of the hamas attack, talked to survivors from california, including a girl shot in the leg and left for dead, and the mother of a man whose arm was blown off and is is now a hostage. the governor statement reading in part that no one deserves to live in the kind of fear and terror that israeli people are

enduring right now. people came together to learn more about palestinian people and what is happening in gaza. about 100 attended the teach-in. some shared concerns for relatives in gaza and others asked questions about the conflict. >> the framing has been one sd, about the humanity of one side. of course israelis are in pain with what just happened. but there's no talk about the reality that the palestinians live through, and the occupation they've lived through for 75 years. >> her husband's family in gaza just lost their home and business during missile strikes and are seeking safety in a shelter. the teach-in was one of several happening in the bay area this weekend. more com up at 11:00. >>e' continue to follow the latest developments on the israel-hamas war and the impact in the bay area. nbcbayarea.com, click on the link at the top of the home

page. traffic is flowing again on the peninsula after a deadly crash shut down 101 last night. a motorcyclist lost control, side swiped a jeep wrangler that rolled over. the motorcyclist died. a group of neighbors in san francisco are more ready for the next big disaster. the emergency response team is here, the green vests. they trained to take action. practiced search and rescue, patient triage and other skills, put on by the fire department so people can help the community. >> it's about neighbor help-high neighbor. we're teaching individuals from

the neighborhoods the skill set. when it comes to a big disaster, the 911 system, first responders, will be overwhelmed. at that point we want people in the communities to be able to help each other. >> fire department hosts drills like this twice a year, next one in april. it may be a headache for drivers now but caltrans said it will be smoother when the work is done. all 87 southbound closed down. highway 85 to julian street. 280 north to get to 85 or 280 south to southbound 101 to get to highway 85. this is the second time they've shut down this stretch of road. last month they closed northbound lanes. it's to make it a smoother ride in san jose. >> there's going to be a notice

costa county. nonprofit, grateful gatherings, a ukrainian couple and their 10-year-old son have a place to stay. they escaped in 2022 when fighting intensified, reached poland with three bags of belongings, making their way to california. a danville woman took them in an the family was thrilled. they had no idea there would be furniture, food and a framed family photo. >> welcome home. >> i love it, it's really home. oh, my god. guys, you're amazing. and you know, just chairs, okay, it's enough for us. but now it's real home. you made it really cozy and nice, and just amazing. amazing place. >> the family is looking forward

highs in the mid-70s. 20 degrees cooler than thursday. 62 in san francisco. temperatures dropping into the upper 50s by tomorrow morning. but you need the umbrella. rain at times in the morning. where the weather gets more interesting is 10:00 to 4:00. there's a chance of thunderstorms. highs staying in the 60s around the bay, low 70s san jose and tri-valley, and north bay in mid-60s. hour by hour. before sunrise, areas of right rain. then the main event around 9:00 across sonoma county, approaching the coast. 9:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon, more intense showers cross over the diablo range and we could have thunder. it will stabilize once the sun sets and shower chances start to decrease towards 11:00 tomorrow

night. rapid clearing into monday. tomorrow, pretty active weather, a chance of rain, isolated thunder, then rapid clearing. 60s to low 70s for highs, back into the 70s and 80s inland monday and tuesday. a little breezy around the north bay hills. nice, mostly sunny skies. increasing clouds on wednesday will lead us to our next chance of rain showers, probably towards the end of the week. there's a look at the cloud cover for midweek, a system that will mostly miss us north. but friday, could be a second chance for showers. next weekend looks good right now for outdoor plans. should see high pressure coming in in the weekend ahead of halloween. we'll be watching for that. showers and a chance of
