welcome back. as we have been discussing, we continue to follow developments out of the middle east. several american political leaders have made trips to israel, including joe biden, defense secretary lloyd austin, and our governor, gavin newsom. this as joe biden asks congress for more aid money for israel and ukraine. but without a speaker of the
7:13 am
house, what can congress actually do? please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of "meet the press." hi, kristen. as always, thanks for joining us this morning. for the last two weekends, we have discussed this exact issue, what can congress do, as you so poetically stated, they are paralyzed. so today instead i would like to ask you about secretary blinken's recent marathon trip to israel. you have an exclusive interview with him this morning. is he able to summarize this diplomatic voyage, assuming he had a big part in the release of these hostages and latest developments? >> that's a great question, kira. you're right, we do continue to have the same conversation weekend after weekend, because nothing has changed in congress basically. in terms of secretary of state antony blinken's marathon trip, look, he stressed the fact that his message was that the united states stands shoulder to
7:14 am
shoulder with israel. he also stressed that his goal, joe biden's goal, is to make sure that this doesn't expand into a wider war. so the importance of getting allies and partners on board with that, i asked him how concerned he is about iran essentially trying to escalate this crisis and this confrontation. he said that is among their top concerns, particularly after you had u.s. service members who have been targeted at various places throughout the region. they are deepy concerned about this, kira. so i think that those are two of the top priorities. the hostage release at the top of that list, as well. and then, of course, sending that message to israel, that the united states stands with israel, but also wants to make sure that they are following international law as they proceed with what is expected to be a ground invasion, which could be coming imminently. so it is a fascinating discussion with the secretary of state. i tried to get details about why
7:15 am
the two american hostages were released now. he said he can't get into private conversations but stressed how significant it is that they have been released. >> and now hamas claiming that they were willing to release two more, so we will see what transpires as the weeks progress. kristen, you have quite the lineup this morning. we look forward to your show. thanks for joining us with that preview. we do hope you join kristen for this morning's "meet the press." she will have all exclusive interviews. antony blinken, kevin mccarthy, as well as former vice president mike pence who will discuss former president trump's attorneys taking plea deals this past week. "meet the press" is on at 8:00 a.m. right after this news cast. coming up in about 30 minutes, we'll talk to political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at that disarray happening in congress, as the speaker of the house spot
