"early today" starts right now good morning, i'm phillip mena. >> and i'm frances rivera. western leaders have issued a joint statement urging israel to adhere to international humanitarian law in its war in gaza the leaders of canada, france, germany, italy, the uk and the u.s. stress that civilians need to be protected since hamas's

attack on israel two weeks ago more than 4,500 people have been killed in gaza, most civilians by israeli air strikes. >> for the latest on this conflict let's go to claudio lavanga. good morning is this statement likely to influence israeli policy at all? >> reporter: phillip, frances, good morning the statement was carefully drafted by the leaders of those countries to show that they still support israel and its right to defend itself and to retaliate against hamas but at the same time now they are calling for israel to respect international humanitarian law especially when it comes to protection of civilians. now, this is different than a statement that the same leaders issued two weeks ago right after hamas's attack in which they offered the steadfast and united support to israel, they condemned hamas, but they didn't mention the need to protect civilians on both sides, of course well, now the statement doesn't seem to have -- what's changed

since then why is it different? since then as you mentioned there has been 4,000 people killed -- more than 4,000 people killed in the gaza strip, mostly by israeli air strikes, including hundreds of children, as you mentioned now the statement came out last night and it doesn't seem to have had any immediate effect to be honest because overnight gaza continued to -- israel continued to pound gaza with air strikes, but what seems to be working at least diplomatically when it comes to delaying the ground assault is the visit by heads of states to israel as it happened with president biden last week this week we are learning that the leaders of france and the netherlands are expected to visit israel so the ground assault supposing they will wait until they leave the country to start, if it ever happens, of course well, now in the meantime in a statement we will also welcome the release of two first

hostages and calls for the release of all the other hostages the two israeli-american hostages, natalie and judith raanan have now reunited with their families, but it's most likely that they were also questioned at length by security services in israel to at least try to get some information that perhaps may be useful to locate the other remaining hostages still in gaza. phillip, frances. >> the recess of those hostages, some good news in recent days. claudio lavanga, thank you very much. the two hostages released friday are 59-year-old artist judith raanan and her 17-year-old daughter natalie who just graduated from high school. the two live in a suburb of chicago but hold dual israeli and american citizenship they were in israel for the jewish holidays and natalie's grandmother's 85th birthday on october 7th. they were kidnapped by hamas from the kibbutz

former president trump and majority whip tom emmer of minnesota. he has the endorsement of former speaker kevin mccarthy >> this is embarrassing for the republican party, it's embarrassing for the nation, and we need to look at one another and solve the problem. >> if emmer cannot get the votes, would you rule out running for speaker again to get your old job back? >> look, i don't need the title. i'm going to help in any way i can. >> the house has been without a speaker since mccarthy was voted out of the job on october 3rd. this new crop of candidates has stepped forward after steve kornacki and then jim jordan were unable to get 217 votes to win the gavel. tonight the nine new candidates will make their case to their party in a closed-door forum on tuesday morning republicans will hold another vote to choose the new nominee.

whoever that ends up being they will face the uphill battle of trying to win 217 votes needed in the full house. >> 217 an allusive number these days in the house. thank you. detroit police are searching for the suspect in the murder of samantha woll, a jewish synagogue board president. authorities say woll was found early saturday repeatedly stabbed and killed her death comes as federal authorities are concerned about attacks fueled by the israel-hamas war investigators have not announced a motive but so far they have not found evidence suggesting the crime was motivated by anti-semitism. friends and family said their good-byes to the beloved community member on sunday. there is a manhunt under way in nashville after two police officers were shot the suspect is john drake jr., he is the estranged son of the nashville police chief the two officers were shot when they were looking into reports of a stolen vehicle. they say they struggled with the suspect who pulled out a handgun and shot them. both are expected to be okay

the police chief says he's only had minimal contact with his son who resorted to years of criminal activity. he also says his son needs to be found and held accountable. a chinese coast guard ship rammed a philippine coast guard ship in contested waters sunday. a military supply boat was also damaged. the vessels managed to maneuver away quickly preventing an escalation there were no injuries but the incident has raised new fears of armed conflict in the south china sea. china is claiming ownership over several islands close to the philippines. the american ambassador to manila condemned china over the incident. the new mexico site where the first atomic bomb was detonated saw potentially record turnout this weekend thanks to the blockbuster film "oppenheimer." >> are we say theres a chance when we push that button we destroy the world? >> the chances are near zero
