12:00 pm
qatar's government. before today the israeli defense forces said more than -- excuse me, 200 hostages were being held in gaza, and it is unclear where that number stands now exactly. it also comes as nbc news has learned from four u.s. officials that the biden administration is advising israel to delay a ground invasion in gaza to allow more time for negotiations. we want to go right now to chief foreign correspondent richard engel in jerusalem. what do we know and what do we not know about the latest release, richard? >> reporter: so we know there has been a tremendous amount of mediation to get to this point. so as you mentioned, a few days ago, three days ago two american citizens were released by hamas and reunited with their family, brought to safety. then a short while ago, hamas announced the release of two female israeli citizens. they are noris hawk and yohaida
12:01 pm
lipzig. this release was confirmed by multiple sources including a family source they were released for humanitarian reasons and urgent health reasons. hamas accused israel of violating agreements, of violating terms of their release but it didn't provide any specifics. what we do know is now we have seen two releases, not back to back but two in fairly close succession, one of a group of what hamas would consider foreigners, foreign passport holders, american citizens, now two israelis. we are expecting, i would say, quite soon to hear statements from the israeli government about this. regarding the ground offensive, yes, there has been according to multiple sources in the united states some -- i won't say pressure but guidance from the administration to hold off on a full ground defensive into the gaza strip as this hostage negotiation process is starting
12:02 pm
to yield fruit, although very slowly, and because of the tremendous risk of escalation into a broader war. so a second hostage release from hamas, we can confirm it. >> richard, what is the thinking in terms of the nationalities? we were hearing at one point it would be foreigners who would be released, and here it is two israelis. does this change expectations going forward? >> reporter: i don't think so. we're in contact with people involved in this process and the hope is that this will continue and that there will be more releases, that there will be another batch, potentially a larger batch, and, yes, earlier in the day there had been some hope that there would be a large group of foreigners including americans, perhaps even dozens. that didn't come to fruition. we don't know exactly why, but there is this somewhat cryptic statement within the hamas
12:03 pm
statement saying that during the release israel, according to hamas, violated some terms that they had agreed to. so this has always been going on for the last several hours. we and other reporters around the world have been waiting for this, trying to confirm this, obviously with great sensitivity because you don't want to upset the process and only put any hostages at risk. but, yes, i do not believe this is the end of the process. this could be more momentum, hopefully, to lead to more releases. >> and, again, we are hearing intermediary countries have helped in this release. do we know what hamas is asking? i mean that's been the question since the original terror attack, is why and why take hostages if, for no other reason, than to have a human shield. just give us some insight into why this has taken place? >> reporter: well, hamas took these people always to exchange them, to use as bargaining chips and as human shields.
12:04 pm
and going back about a week now, we were in contact directly with hamas and with mediators, and hamas expressed its willingness to release civilians in order to stop the bombing campaign, aleve some of military pressure happening on gaza where thousands of civilians according to multiple sources, not just hamas, have been killed in the airstrikes so far. so this is an attempt by hamas to show -- it wants to show to the world that it is not a terrorist group, that it has a sense of humanity. that is not the way many people around the world see it. that is certainly not the way the united states sees it, the way president biden sees it. that is something that hamas has addressed directly, while releasing these -- what he calls prisoners, saying, we are doing this for humanitarian reasons. specifically in the last release it said to disprove the lies told about it by president biden
12:05 pm
and the outside world. >> richard engel, i will ask you to stand by for a moment as i bring in our chief foreign affairs correspondent, andrea mitchell. andrea, the u.s. administration has been very clear this is their number one priority, that they have been working this problem. do we know the steps that have been taking place out of view? >> there have been a lot of communications, some directly from president biden to bb netanyahu, benjamin netanyahu, bb as he is known, some by tony blinken. they've been talking to officials in qatar, in egypt and all of the other gulf countries as well. there are reports that there have been communications via the defense officials to some former mossad officials, the israeli retired members of the mossad which is the israeli foreign intelligence operation there, their cia. so this is a very complex issue, and it is not only the hostages. one of the chief requests, if
12:06 pm
you will, from tony blinken and the president were to get an established humanitarian flow of aid through the rafah crossing before the ground invasion. so to be sensitive about the hostages, to have israel better define its goals and map the territory, if you will, to try to get better intelligence, and they did go in on several occasions including the last 24 hours, and the last few days i believe, to go in with special operations to try to figure out where the hostages might be and get a better sense before a ground invasion were to begin. i was talking to several sources over the weekend, american sources who said that there would not be an immediate ground invasion but that it would be, you know, coming in coming days, that it is going to happen. israel is not putting it offin definitely, but that they wanted to try to keep the hostage talks going and get the aid in, and we saw a third aid delivery go
12:07 pm
through the rafah gate about two or three hours ago. so that is one of the important pieces of this, and that was a very complicated operation because it was egypt that was holding it off in the last 24, 48 hours. before that, israel had held up the crossing opening. they wanted everything to be inspected, both sides, and that hadn't been set up properly as far as israel was concerned, so that every delivery was opened and inspected by them, and they're not in gaza to do the inspection but they wanted to certainly see it going through egypt, as well as objections from hamas. they still have not done any of the 300-some doctors without borders, health workers out who are trying to get out or 350 americans. there may be some overlap there. some may be americans trying to get out, and egypt has been saying nobody is coming out through that crossing until more
12:08 pm
aid goes in, so it was another key piece of this. very complicated negotiations, lester. >> we continue to report. for those joining us the apparent release of two hostages, two more hostages by hamas. let me bring in hala gorani who is live in tel aviv. what can you tell us about qatar's role in all of this? >> reporter: well, a source briefed on the talks, lester, confirmed to me that these two hostages were released following mediation efforts by qatar and egypt as well. this source told me that the two hostages were chosen for release because they were elderly and frail, confirming that they were in transit when i spoke to the source about 10, 15 minutes ago. one of the families, we understand, has confirmed to nbc that, indeed, their relative has been let go by hamas. two hostages named nuri yitsok and lip zig. we're not sure what route they took out of gaza.
12:09 pm
the first two hostages to be released by hamas last week were handed over to the red cross, red crescent inside gaza and were handed to israeli authorities on the israeli side of the border. unclear whether or not these two elderly female hostages followed the same route. this is what we know right now, that the egyptians and the qataris have been working on this release. this is something i think we can expect to see in other hostage releases as well. qatar has been taking a lead role. they host a hamas office in doha, the capital of qatar, and they have a direct line of communications with -- communication with that group, lester. >> hala gorani, thank you for that update. i'm going to go back to our chief foreign correspondent richard engel live in jerusalem. i understand you have learned a little more about the individuals who have just been released? >> reporter: yes, in addition to hamas saying it released the for urgent medical reasons,
12:10 pm
israeli media now report both women are in their 80s. so we are learning more. we expect to hear more from the israeli government quite soon, as hala was saying, through egyptian and qatar negotiators and those we have been in contact since we've been on air are optimistic there will be more releases to come. >> let me bring in our senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell. i watched the briefing at the white house a while ago. there seemed to be no hint anything was imminent. clearly a lot going on behind the scenes. >> reporter: and publicly the white house wants to be very careful to not say too much while some of the very delicate diplomatic negotiating and operational pieces of any hostage release can go forward without drawing unwanted attention or more risk to those involved. so you're right. the white house has not said anything publicly about this yet. the president has an unrelated scheduled event that is about to begin in less than two minutes
12:11 pm
based on the customary warning we get, that the president would be coming forward shortly. we have not been told if he will address this issue. the purpose of his event is about an economic-related piece, bidenomics as they call it, continuing the day-to-day business of being president. so we will certainly watch closely for that. when it comes to trying to deal with the hostage figures, one of the things that admiral john kirby, who speaks on behalf of the national security council, said that it is believed there are about ten americans who are still unaccounted for, but it is not to say all ten would be hostages, among those taken by hamas. perhaps only a handful. just undetermined on a specific number involving americans who have been taken hostage. obviously there are other nationalities in addition to israelis who are a part of the pool believed to be held by hamas. we don't know the circumstances of if they're held together, if they've been moved around, all of the kind of tactical things
12:12 pm
that terrorist groups can do to try to hold that very valuable resource of human lives when they are doing this negotiating. one of the things that the white house has said very clearly is that the president wants israel to observe the laws of war, to focus on making certain aid can get in, humanitarian, food, help that can go to the palestinian public that is there in gaza unable to leave while also concerned they don't want any resources like fuel to be absconded by hamas or in some ways abused by the relief that's going in. that in and of itself is a very delicate thing. lester. >> kelly, thank you. let me go back to richard engel. it is hard to believe there would be multiple negotiations going on. is it your indication the u.s. is leading these discussions or how is it laying out? >> reporter: i do not believe that the u.s. is leading them. i think it is being led by qatar
12:13 pm
and now we're seeing more involvement from egypt. qatar has relations with hamas. it has very close relations with the united states. there are u.s. troops based in qatar. hamas also has an office in qatar. so it is well-placed to serve as a mediator here. the u.s. is absolutely involved since there are still americans who are believed to be among the hostages, that america is very closely allied with israel, fully supporting israel's military campaign, but my understanding is that it is not americans who are on the phone directly with hamas, working for these releases, but they are certainly informed. >> and what about these reports that the u.s. has been pressuring or urging or suggesting that israel, you know, slow its roll a little bit on this roll toward a ground invasion? is that tied into these negotiations, are the qataris and others being told it is essentially on the table? >> reporter: this is a line that
12:14 pm
we're hearing from the united states, that the u.s. has been encouraging israel to slow down, if possible, a military offensive. it may or may not be true. it could be that the israelis aren't ready and are just looking for reasons to justify why they haven't gone in. there are many people in this country who are asking that of their own government, why haven't they seen a stronger military reaction thus far. generally in matters of military speaking, israel usually decides what it wants to do when it wants to do. >> richard engel, thank you. that concludes this nbc news special report. we will have much more ahead on our streaming channel, "nbc news now", online at nbcnews.com and. i'm lester holt. news. i'm lester holt. i'm lester holt. thank yo uwhen my doctor gave me breztri for my copd things changed for me. breztri gave me better breathing, symptom improvement, and reduced flare-ups. breztri won't replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. it is not for asthma.

welcome back to "nbc news daily" i'm kate snow. >> i'm zinhle essamuah. we'll continue to follow the breaking news in the israel/hamas war. we're told two more hostages have been released. >> we haven't seen the hostages. it comes after two american hostages were released on friday. let's bring in josh letterman in israel for us. what more do we know about the two women? they're both women and i think they're both seniors?
12:18 pm
>> reporter: that's right. i just spoke with an israeli official who confirmed these two women have been released and also the identities of these two released hostages one said to be 85 years old and one said to be 79. they're both believed to be from the same village in israel which is close to the gaza strip, close to where the hamas terrorists infiltrated a little over two weeks ago. we're hearing from the red cross in their involvement facilitating the release, saying their unique role as a neutral party allowed them to escort the two from hamas custody to the border. we cannot -- we can say nbc can't confirm where these two are. but according to an israeli official and others in the region they have been released.
12:19 pm
we're hearing from a family member of one of the two hostages it was confirmed that the family was notified of the release as well. why hamas decided right now, kate, they were going to release two more hostages is an open question. we don't have an answer to that. but we know that hamas in their statement cited humanitarian reasons. they said that israel continues to not accept the release of civilian hostages. a claim that israel calls propaganda and rejected. but hamas saying they decided to release these two hostages any way. obviously a hope for the some 200 hostages that remain in gaza, including 10 believed to be americans. >> let's go to rob now a former fbi supervisor, a former member of the fbi hostage rescue team. your reaction to this news, rob?

bottom of the hour now on "nbc news daily." we continue to follow the breaking news in the israel/hamas. multiple sources telling nbc news two more hostages have been released by hamas. >> we have not yet seen the hostages and today's release comes after two americans were
12:31 pm
released on friday. >> going to go to dennis ross with us, he's a former ambassador. dennis, are you there? >> i am. >> mr. ambassador i should say, you were special envoy to the middle east. you've dealt directly with negotiations like this. what do you think it took to get two more hostages released today? >> there are a variety of considerations, number one, qatar is putting a fair amount of pressure on hamas, when i say that, it's a combination of threatening to who would money making clear it may not provide safe haven for hamas leaders, many hamas political leaders are in doha. they have quite a bit of leverage on hamas and they're using it in no small part because i think they're pressured by the biden administration. i would say in part, at least, because pretty hard to understand why they would provide safe haven and a
12:32 pm
platform for hamas leaders. so that're saying if you think this is important and there's a benefit you need to prove it to us. you use the relationship with hamas to get the hostages released. so that's one factor. i think that will continue to be the case. now we're talking about a total of four out of 222 that have been released. it's not like we're seeing a massive release. and secondly, i think the age of these two women, 85 and 79 probably contributes to it because there's probably a genuine concern about their health. i think there's also -- hamas is trying to show it will release hostages but it's using the hostage as a lever on israel a not to carry out its attack, and, b, to try to set the stage to get something in trade. so i think that's all the things going on right now. and i think qatar is probably front and center, and may be
12:33 pm
playing a role as well. >> ambassador ross i wanted to ask you about that role. because we're getting reports that the egyptian and qatar government helped mediate this hostage release. what do negotiations like this actually look like? walk us through this process. >> they take didn't forms they're not all cookie cutter. not one case is something that will necessarily fit all. in something like this, the advantage that qatar has, it has the political leadership of hamas in doha right now. so they're talking directly to them. now they have to then be able to communicate -- people have to be able to communicate with the leadership in gaza itself. and so undoubtedly there's a discussion going on between them and those within gaza and there's a back and forth between them. those who are sitting in doha
12:34 pm
can't necessarily immediately deliver from those who are operating out of gaza. those who are operating out of gaza are probably making the case -- excuse me, sorry, are probably making the case that you need to get something you need to relieve the israeli pressure on us. so you have that and then you have the egyptians, because egyptians, they are the ones sitting next door and they control a lot of access into and out of gaza. so you have multiple players, and when you have multiple players, you don't have a direct back and forth. you have a kind of constant set of discussions, sometimes veering off in different directions sometimes new demands emerging. that's the flavor of what goes on. >> i imagine it can be tracked back to antony blinken's trip going to all those countries a week ago. i think our viewers might want know, does this mean the rest of
12:35 pm
the hostages will eventually be freed? crystal ball could we see other hostages coming out in the days before a ground offensive starts? >> i think we could see additional ones. it's clear that hamas used the hostages as assets and they're assets from the standpoint of trying to prevent israel from coming in this on the ground. they're assets in their mind from trying to get something, something from the israelis for it. meaning, at some point, you're going to see them seek to get palestinian prisoners for it. i think it'll be very, very difficult to move the israelis on that. you have to understand in the case of the hamas leadership in gaza, the people who were the master minds behind this were released in a trade in 2011 where prime minister netanyahu released 1,000 prisoners. so from their experience no
12:36 pm
doubt in my mind they think they'll get something not just those right now, in which i think that's very much an effort on their part to respond to qatar and maybe some extent to egypt. because egypt after all, controls the border. so you have multiple factors and players here, this will go on but i think more hostages will be released. >> a moment ago you were referring to an israeli soldier held and traded for a thousand hamas prisoners in israel. >> let's bring in ha la go are knee in israeli for us. what are your sources on the ground telling you? >> we have confirmed through the icrc that, indeed, two israeli hostages were released and that they have left gaza. we are talking about yocheved an
12:37 pm
85-year-old woman and yuri, 79 years old. this release took place following negotiations i'm told, and mediations, involving qatar in the gulf, the persian gulf as well as egypt, as many many of our viewers know, qatar hosts a political office for hamas. this is, of course, the group inside of gaza that is holding these hostages, the source told me that the two detainees were chosen because they were elderly and frail. you're seeing here an image of yocheved lifshitz, 85 years old. we're told her husband is still detained inside of gaza. we're waiting for the image of the release to come to us. we're understanding it will take place at the rafah border crossing with egypt.
12:38 pm
this is where we understand israeli authorities will be taking custody of these two hostages. this follows the release last week of two other hostages that were detained by hamas. we now know there are more than 200 others, by the way, inside of the gaza strip, and it followed pretty much the same modus operandi, the hostages were handed over to the international red cross and then they were ferried to the border crossing in the southern part of the gaza strip that you see highlighted there on the map and handed over to authorities there. we're waiting for that transfer to take place and the images to reach us. back to you. >> do we know anything about their condition? do we know, they're 79 and 85-year-old women, do we know anything about how they've been treated or not yet? >> so we understand that one of the hostages is in need of oxygen. that she is quite frail. this would be yocheved lifshitz.
12:39 pm
no details yet on the other hostage. but my source told me that both were chosen because they are frail. because they are elderly and that hamas chose to release them for that reason. of course hamas is doing this for strategy and cynical reasons. it could be an attempt to clay a ground incursion because this drip drip of hostage release is making it more difficult, presumably, for the israeli military to go in. we know that the u.s. president, joe biden is putting some pressure, at least trying to convince the israeli leadership, benjamin netanyahu, of not going in, to allow some time and some space for more hostages to be released. but this is what we know of the conditions of these two women. they are frail, they are elderly and no doubt a big big sigh of relief for the families of these detainees. as i mentioned, the husband of
12:40 pm
the older of the two is still in hamas hands. >> have we heard from hamas, those who actually released the hostages? what have they said? >> reporter: the spokesperson for the brigade, the military ring of hamas announced on telegram, the social chat platform that this release was taking place. of course it was just that one initial announcement. it hadn't been confirmed from other sources neither the icrc nor people involved in the negotiation so we had a heads up about an hour before the official confirmation that this was in the works. so they had announced it earlier in the day and, in fact, a couple of days ago they announced that they were on the vernal of releasing these hostages but that the israeli authorities had refused to receive them. something that the office of the prime minister denied.
12:41 pm
so as you can see, this is also, you know, kind of a war of statements of announcements. it's kind of a psychological battle here, using as pawns these hostages who are being held in gaza. there are more than 200 of them and no doubt hamas is using these human beings that they're holding onto inside the gaza strip to either delay or avoid completely a ground incursion. and certainly put political pressure on the prime minister of this country, of israel, to modify or at least take into account the fact that they're holding these civilians in order to devise the military plans going forward as to whether or not to invade and how to do it. back to you. >> quickly, you mentioned they would likely come out through the rafah gate, that's the southern part of gaza leading into egypt. we also know there have been
12:42 pm
attempts today to try to move aid in through that gate. we've heard disputed accounts whether that's happening today. what is the situation as far as you know? is aid coming in? is there enough aid in gaza? >> reporter: the aid that is coming in is barely making a dent as far as the needs are concerned of the more than 2 million people inside of the gaza strip. on any ordinary day before this war, 3 to 400 trucks would make the crossing into gaza but we understand 20 trucks were able to cross into gaza today with some food and medical supplies but crucially no fuel. and the u.n. agency in charge of refugees in gaza is saying fuel at this point is as important as water, food and medicine because without it hospitals are not able to operate, they're not able to feed the generators and not able to treat the people who are wounded.
12:43 pm
the thousands wounded every day as a result of some of these israeli air strikes. so it's just a few at a time, but when they do make it, of course they're welcome. but they're not nearly enough in terms of what the people inside of gaza need. >> wonderful to have you with us. thank you so much. don't go anywhere we'll be right back with more on the release of two more hostages

we continue to follow the breaking news in the israel/hamas, the news that two more hostages have been released by hamas. >> we have not yet seen these hostages. it comes after two americans were released on friday. let's bring in correspondent andrea mitchell now. we were talking with ambassador dennis ross a little bit ago. we were talking with others. i know there's been a lot of diplomatic negotiations. can you talk to the antony blinken part of this? the secretary of state was in the region i remember talking to you when he was hopscotching all over the region. is there a direct link from that diplomacy to what we're seeing now? >> absolutely. he went to all the countries in the region and had intense discussions in this qatar. qatar has very close relations
12:47 pm
with hamas, they fund hamas to the tune of $10 million a month. they have several of the hamas leaders staying in doha, in their capital. and so, they are the key intermediary. interestingly, this release from the military wing of hamas said that they were thanks to qatar and egypt. so clearly president el sisi, they're military, their intelligence was part of this deal. the negotiations. and very interestingly, these are two israeli women, two elderly israeli women and initially they were reports from hamas that only the foreign hostages would come out, americans and other nationalities, not israelis. then they said well, maybe civilian israelis here you have two civilian israelis, the last to be released if if they are released would be uniformed idf israeli soldiers, men as well as women because typically hamas uses them as bargaining chips to

try to get palestinian prisoners out from israel. and as you know, in the past, one israeli soldier who had been in -- a hostage for five years in gaza was traded for 1,000 palestinian prisoners. in any case, this is a very complex agreement. i was told by an israeli source they have spoken to their families they are in, quote, good health. as good as it could be. and one of them in particular was badly needing her medications, which she has not had since october 7th. >> very complex. stakes high and we've been hearing from family members of hostages. i spoke with the family of edan alexander. a hostage right now. what do you know? >> reporter: what we believe from the state department is there are approximately 10 hostages, in addition to the two who were released.
12:49 pm
and that's the chief focus, when i was in touch with the state department about hostages just in the last hour, and they said well, they didn't have as much information because these were the israelis who were coming out, not the americans. so they've been speaking to all of the families, the american families, the president has, secretary blinken has, the hostage negotiators, and they've pretty well knew how many americans were missing but now they're zeroing in on how many of the missing were actually hostage. that was not clear until the last 24, 48 hours. in any case, we believe they are in good health. the americans, as far as i know, are not among the edlerly. we were told there was a holocaust survivor, several really old israeli prisoners. i don't think the americans are. but we don't know that much
