as war rages in the middle east, diplomats clash at the united nations israel wants the u.n. secretary-general to resign over his remarks
4:01 am
we have a live report ahead. and gaza becomes hell on earth, as israeli bombings kill, maim and traumatize thousands of children we will take you inside gaza's biggest hospital teetering on the edge of collapse and the chaos on capitol hill churns on as republicans choose another congressman to run for the long-vacant speakership. will mike johnson get to 217 votes today? and we'll look at the trailer for a new star-studded netflix drama about the end of the world. and there are 63 national parks in the united states and this 3-year-old boy has visited all of them. we'll tell you how all that came to be. it's wednesday, october 25 "early today" starts right now good morning, i'm frances rivera >> i'm phillip mena. after more than two week of israeli bombing, more than 5700 people are dead in gaza. that's according to palestinian health officials more than 700 were killed on
4:02 am
tuesday alone. half of them children. the situation there is so dire that secretary of state antony blinken is endorsing humanitarian pauses in the bombing, that's something that the u.s. vetoed at the u.n. just last week. for the latest on this, we want to bring in janis mackey frayer who is following these developments for us. what's israel's response to all this >> reporter: well, phillip, israel has said that hamas needs to be destroyed, that israel has the right to self-defense, and it's why officials are furious with the secretary-general of the united nations and calling for him to resign after antonio gutierres said the attacks by hamas did not happen in a vacuum and that strikes on civilians in gaza amount to what he called collective punishment. israel says it is shocked bit comments and that they are, quote, completely disconnected from reality israel has ramped up airt airstrikes across the gaza

strip, bringing buildings down, reducing them to rubble. it's unclear how many people were killed overnight. meanwhile, a ground invasion is still looming with israeli forces amassing at the border and growing concerns that fighting could spill over across the region diplomacy at this point has been slow moving. it's a balancing act, with regards to a cease-fire, to getting aid into the gaza strip, as well as winning the release of some 200 hostages that hamas is still holding, including ten americans, diplomats at this pointtrying to buy time. they say the amount of aid made into gaza is a drop in the bucket compared to what is needed antony blinken is looking at humanitarian pauses in order to get more aid from egypt into gaza and the mideast is likely to be on the agenda when he meets tomorrow with china's foreign minister wang yi
4:04 am
they will have that advice nit washington the u.s. and other countries have been urging china to use its influence with iran to make sure or to help ensure that the conflict doesn't widen across the region meanwhile, the winning the relieve hostages remains a priority for qatar they have influence with hamas all of this, of course, happening against the backdrop of very deep concern that the conflict could spread into a regional war phillip? >> janis mackey frayer with the latest developments this morning. thank you. as israel's assault on gaza keeps intensifying, the brunt of the suffering is borne by civilians, especially the childrenca caught in the bombardment. we should warn you, some of the images are distressing
4:05 am
>> reporter: if the walls of gaza's hospital could talk they'd tell a story of a perpetual hell of children crying out in agony. bloody fighting for their lives after israeli airstrikes >> 40% of all of the wounded are children >> reporter: they would tell you how the hospital has no room how medical teams have been forced to treat patients in the hallway. the walls of the hospital cannot speak, but the dedicated doctors working here can >> over the last 24 hours, we have received 600 dead and three times the number of wounded. this is putting even more pressure on the system that's falling apart. we're running out of everything, from simple dressings to complex burns dressings.
4:06 am
we have over 150 patients ventilated in intensive care areas. and fuel is becoming an issue. we're having more and more cuts. we know that one of the major hospitals in northern gaza has, the fuel there has run out, and they're now running a much smaller generator just for the operating room and any minute now this is going to happen here as the fuel runs out here >> reporter: israel has increased its aerial bombardments on the gaza strip what these doctors witness every day is the massive impact those strikes are having on palestinian civilians. >> this war is different, in terms of the type of ordinance used, has a much bigger incendiary component to it >> reporter: the walls of the hospital cannot speak. but they carry the echoes of the most brutal, often unspeakable moments of war

if the world listens >> our thank else tos to ellisor that report. another day, another house speaker nomination for the gop mike johnson of louisiana was chosen to try to win the gavel he will be the fourth republican to see if he can win the magic number of 217 votes from within his own party. brie jackson joins us from d.c good morning it seems nearly impossible to get republicans to unite behind a nominee. >> reporter: you're right. it does feel that way. this is the fourth attempt in three weeks. but johnson definitely seemed hopeful. he is a well-liked congressman in his party who hasn't made many political enemies republicans held a roll call vote to see how much support he had for a possible floor vote of the and he said there were no votes against him. but there were some members absent who he saidhe would
4:08 am
reach out to overnight >> democracy is messy sometimes. but it is our system this conference that you see, this house republican majority is united. [ applause ] >> we're going to restore your trust in what we do here you're going to see a new form of government, and we are going to move this quickly this group here is ready to govern, and we're going to govern well and do what's right by the people. >> reporter: and it is definitely not a sure thing that johnson will win the gavel today. the previous nominee, tom emmer, only lasted four hours as the speaker nominee yesterday before he realized he didn't have enough support, and he dropped out. after emmer dropped out, three sources told nbc news, kevin mccarthy started floating a new plan to reinstall himself as speaker and jim jordan would be the assistant speaker. the idea would be to unite the different factions of the party.
4:09 am
it's still unclear if this pitch will gain any traction among republicans, but for now, they are focussed on their new nominee, mike johnson. he could be put to the test of a full house vote as soon as noon today. >> saga continues, brie jackson, thank you. in a rare display of bipartisanship, the u.s. senate voted unanimously to confirm president biden's nominee to be head of the federal aviation administration the agency has been without a senate-confirmed chief for more than a year and a half whitaker takes over at a fraught time for the faa runway near misses have spiked across the country and there's a shortage of air traffic controllers, and agency technology is in need of upgrades president biden will not appear on the new hampshire ballot during the 2024 primary it says it was following the democratic national committee's guidance not to file think are committed to making
