"early today" starts right now. good early morning. i'm frances rivera. >> i'm phillip mena. we begin with that breaking news in lewiston, maine. another mass shooting in america and the gunman is still on the run. law enforcement sources say between 15 and 20 people are dead, about 50 people are injured. some of them were trampled as people tried to run away.

there is still an urgent search for the suspect. >> police released this photo of a person of interest named robert card. they believe he is armed and dangerous. a recent bulletin said he recently reported mental health issues. a nurse told nbc news it was youth night last night. and we have not learned any of the age of the victims. >> officials released this feet over a car believed to be linked to the shooting spree found in nearby lisbon, maine. people in lisbon and lewiston are urged to shelter in place while authorities search for the shooter. let's shift gears and address the big news on capitol hill. after three long weeks of indecision, mike johnson of louisiana has won the race for house speaker. republicans finally able to unite behind a candidate.

brie bracjack /* son joins us d. >> reporter: speaker mike johnson will have a steep learning curve ahead of him. he does not have any leadership experience, but he's going to have to hit the ground running to deal with some urgent matters. one of the most pressing is keeping the federal government open. we face the possibility of a shutdown on november 17. johnson has endorsed a plan to bring up 12 individual spending bills instead of one big piece of legislation to keep departments funded and says he's also open to the possibility of a continuing resolution that would keep the government open through the holidays. then there is the $105 billion in urgent funding that the white house has requested. it includes more than $60 billion for ukraine and $14 billion for israel. then there's also funding for the southern border and other priorities for the white house.

johnson told reporters there are going to have to be conditions on any aid package. he says he wants to see accountability and clear objectives from the white house, and that those discussions will happen. johnson also said he wants to pass a resolution denouncing hamas for the october 7 attacks in israel. he also called the growing national debt the greatest threat to our national security and says he plans to establish a bipartisan debt commission to begin working on addressing this. johnson admitted this is an a ambitious schedule but says we'll see congress working as hard as it's ever worked. >> brie, thank you. most americans probably arnt too familiar with mike johnson. he hasn't really maid too much mmade too much of a name for himself on the national stage until now. >> the honorable mike johnson of the state of louisiana.

and infantry struck numerous terrorist cell, infrastructure and anti-tank missile launch posts and the soldiers have since left gaza and are back on israeli territory, army radio saying this is the largest ground raid into the gaza strip by israeli forces than any previous ones during this current war, and it also involved tanks. so i mean this could be seen as kind of testing the waters and seeing what they need to do and how they do this ground invasion. prime minister netanyahu saying that they have been raining infernal fire on hamas and that a ground entry will, they are preparing for a ground entry, but he will not detail when and how and how many people this will involve, that they are keeping these details away from the public, because think want to protect israeli soldiers' lives.

and this as the latest death toll continues to climb on both sides. the gaza health spokesperson saying more than 6,000 people have been killed in gaza since this began. and the idf saying 1400 people are dead on the israeli side. and this also, we need to remember that more than 200 hostages are still being held by hamas in gaza, according to the idf. and one of the things they want to do is protect, you know, save these people and protect their lives as we wait for this anticipated ground invasion, as israeli airstrikes continue, and they try to contain the current situation and prepare for the next stages, frances. >> just a small look at what may be to come. chapman, thank you. a mississippi mother has learned the devastating truth about what happened to her son. 37-year-old dexter wade went missing back in march. his mother says jackson police told her they were unable to
